U212 NFS Submarine Project Passes Critical Design Review

OCCAR press release

The CDR concludes an exciting design route representing the formal assessment of the system?s final design as outlined in product specifications for each Configuration Items.

Further to intensive, challenging yet collaborative activities, the CDR has demonstrated that the design is mature and fully compliant to mission performance requirements. The system can now proceed with the manufacturing, system installation, integration and trial test phase.

Given the extremely harsh underwater environment and latest quieting technology advancements in the field, a key output of the CDR focused towards the definition of safety, maintainability and reliability of the Programme. According to OCCAR rules and high technological underwater military standards, these features have been fully addressed whilst considering budget, schedule and risk constraints.

The CDR has been achieved through joint and cooperative efforts by all stakeholders; namely, OCCAR-EA U212 NFS Programme Division, Italian Navy Submarine experts and industrial partners led by FINCANTIERI, to include small and medium-sized enterprises.

About U212 NFS

The U212 NFS is for the Italian Navy. Its design is driven by the requirements to improve endurance, operational flexibility, and capabilities. Thanks to the new combat system, sensors, and planned weapon systems, namely the long-range deep strike cruise missiles, the U212NFS will play a key role from beneath the surface, in the multi-domain and joint-multinational operational scenarios.

Based on an evolved U212A design by Fincantieri, the U212 NFS is characterized by a 1.2 meters longer pressure hull and a hydrodynamically enhanced and further quieter platform with an overall length of approximately 59 meters and a surface displacement of approximately 1,600 tons.

The new platform features a new design sail capable to accommodate up to seven electric masts (with space for an additional optional mast), allowing for future development in the direction of a full electric submarine. Moreover, human factor studies are ongoing to provide more comfortable accommodations for new generation crew members.

The U212 NFS will also include a new-generation combat system with a Leonardo-developed command management system and weapon control, both including significant industrial and technological content provided by Italian industry, R&D, and academia. The new platform will have an extended pressure hull, CIC re-designed for additional consoles, tropicalization (operability in seawater with tropical temperatures), electric hoistable masts instead of hydraulic ones, new engineering control monitoring system, and lithium-ion batteries for the propulsion system. Moreover, U212 NFS will be fitted for the deployment of long-range deep-strike cruise missiles and Leonardo national Black Shark Advanced heavyweight torpedoes. These innovative systems will also be tailored with a view to retrofitting previous units.

Delivery schedule
U212 NFS NR.1   12/2027
U212 NFS NR.2   01/2029
U212 NFS NR.3   05/2030 (optional)
U212 NFS NR.4   06/2031 (optional)

German submarine offer for joint manufacturing resurrects Project-75(India)

Germany is offering next-generation submarines to India, worth a $5.2 billion deal to jointly build six conventional submarines. Germany?s offer to India is a significant change from its earlier approach where Germany sought clarification on the joint manufacturing of submarines.

Germany is offering next-generation submarines to India, worth a $5.2 billion deal to jointly build six conventional submarines. While there is no official confirmation, the talks over the submarine took place during Chancellor Olaf Scholz?s visit, it is learnt.

Germany?s offer to India is a significant change from its earlier approach where Germany sought clarification on the joint manufacturing of submarines.

Germany?s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) is one of two international bidders for the proposed submarine project. In 2021, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) issued Request for Proposal (RFP) for the first acquisition programme under the Strategic Partnership model for the construction of six conventional submarines named Project 75(India) [P-75(I)] for the Indian Navy. The key element of the strategic partnership is based on the specific technology?the Air Independent Propulsion System (AIP).

The RFP was issued to shortlisted Strategic Partners (SPs) or Indian Applicant Companies for the project viz, Mazagaon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) and Larsen & Toubro (L&T). The project cost is over Rs 40,000 crore. The RFP conditions that a foreign submarine manufacturer will have to partner with an Indian company to design, develop and build six submarines in India.

The ambitious Project-75(I) also proposes the plan for the indigenous construction of six conventional submarines, including associated shore support, engineering support package, training and spares package with contemporary equipment, weapons & sensors. Apart from the AIP Systems, the P-75 (I) must have advanced missile systems and torpedoes.

It is learnt that India has asked Germany for the full transfer of technologies (ToTs) for the submarines which is about sharing the full spectrum of submarine manufacturing from the design stage to development.

?The submarine project is a definitive attempt by Germany to collaborate with India on strategic technologies,? said a German diplomat who is part of the visit.

Recently, Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar also highlighted the capability gaps, especially on the P-75(India). Since the project is yet to take off under the strategic partnership model, the process for Project 75I for building next-generation submarines will be through by the next year, he said.

The delay over the submarine project is also posing a serious challenge for the Indian navy to address China?s constant maritime expansionism in the IOR. The Indian navy is grappling to maintain its operational capability in the region and beyond in the Indo-Pacific with depleting numbers of submarines.

India has fifteen conventional and one nuclear submarine. However, most of the submarines need replacement. According to the naval perspective plan, the navy needs twenty-four submarines by 2030.
