TRUE BRITISH RAF TRANSPORTER TURNED 35

The only true British military transport aircraft type in Royal Air Force service has turned 35 years old. On 3 September 1981 the BAe 146 took first to the skies, as a regional airliner, at Hatfield in Hertfordshire. Many years later the four RAF machines are part of the surviving active fleet of 220 BAe 146s worldwide.

Serving with No. 32 (The Royal) Squadron at RAF Nordholt two BAe 146 CCMk2s are there to transport members of the Royal Family and other senior government or military hotshots. A pair of grey painted BAe 146 CMk3s – based on the civilian QC variant – provide tactical air transport in both the passenger and palletised freight role.

Succesful jetliner

RAF's quartet are part of a successful British regional jetliner production when looking at the numbers. A total of 394 BAe 146s – and its successor the Avro RJ – were built until production ceased after 22 years of operations in November 2003 in Woodford, Ceshire. Together the type has made more than 12 million hours of flight.

Civilian role

In a civilian role the BAe 146s often provide freight services, for example with Virgin Australia. In parts of Europe the type is commonly deployed as city hopper, for example between Stockholm-Bromma and Brussels IAP.

Firefighting

In the aerial firefighting role three operators in North America will use the machine as a 3000 gallon fire extinguisher and are replacing older piston and turboprop aircraft.

Coming decades

With many of the aircraft having made 20,000 to 35,000 take-offs and landings, most of the BAe 146s are still very much able to double or almost triple that number the coming decades.

BAE Systems wins £15.5 Million MoD Contract for BAE 146 conversions for The Royal Air Force

Prestwick, Scotland, BAE Systems has been awarded a £15.5 million contract by the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) for the conversion of two BAe 146-200QC (Quick Change) aircraft from commercial to military configuration for use by the Royal Air Force.

The two aircraft, which have been acquired by the MoD in a separate transaction with TNT Airways S.A of Belgium, will be used after conversion in both passenger and freight roles to augment in-theatre tactical aircraft numbers, particularly the Lockheed C130 Hercules force, during the upcoming extraction phase of Operation Herrick, the current Afghanistan campaign.

The acquisition of the aircraft and their conversion is being undertaken under an Urgent Operational Requirement (UOR) and according to the MoD will offer the most timely, value–for-money solution to temporarily provide additional tactical aircraft capacity when compared against a range of existing in-service and new aircraft solutions.

BAE Systems Regional Aircraft at Prestwick will be responsible for the design and integration of the military equipment to be fitted to the aircraft, the sourcing of the equipment and management of the supply chain and overall management of the conversion programme. The actual conversion is being carried out at the Hawker Beechcraft Services facility at Broughton, North Wales under sub-contract to BAE Systems.

Hawker Beechcraft Services has considerable expertise in the BAe 146 for the RAF having originally completed the interior conversions of the BAe 146-100s currently operated by No. 32 (The Royal Squadron) and subsequently upgrading these aircraft in recent years.

Among the military equipment to be fitted will be Defensive Aids Systems to enable these UOR aircraft to be protected to appropriate levels, at least equivalent to other UK aircraft operating in Afghanistan.

Both aircraft have been delivered from Belgium to Broughton and work is underway, with delivery to the MoD required by March 2013.

The BAe 146QC is equipped with a large 131 inch wide and 76 inch high (3.33m x1.93m) rear upward-opening freight door giving a large aperture for the easy loading of pallets, containers and awkwardly-shaped cargo. The large cabin volume of the aircraft will allow up to 23,500 lbs (10.6 tonnes) of freight to be carried.

The cabin floor of the aircraft has a freight loading system which allows either palletised freight or passenger seating fixed to pallets to be rapidly installed. The passenger layout is to full commercial aircraft standards with interior trim, carpeting, toilet and galleys available front and rear and overhead passenger service units for each seat row and overhead luggage bins. There are also two large underfloor baggage holds.

In commercial operations the BAe 146QC is capable of carrying up to 96 passengers, but in military use, the MoD anticipates that the constraints of operational altitudes and temperatures and the increased average weights of armed and body-armoured military personnel will result in a lower number of passengers being carried.

BAE Systems first promoted the concept of the BAe 146 as a cost-effective transport aircraft for military use at the Defence Services & Equipment International Exhibition in London in September 2009. In 2012 the concept is even more relevant given the heavy operational demands faced by many Air Forces at a time when the current economic climate is forcing significant defence budget cuts by most governments.

Dubbed the BAe 146M, or the Avro RJM for the later production variant, the aircraft is seen as attractive to Air Forces who operate ageing turboprop and jet airliners that are currently used for transport and communications tasks. It is estimated that there are currently over 1700 such aircraft in service with nearly 150 air arms and many of these aircraft are in excess of 40 years old.

BAE Systems believes the BAe 146M/Avro RJM could also be used by Air Forces to complement existing fleets of tactical airlifters such as C130 Hercules, by taking on a wide variety of non tactical air transport roles, thereby prolonging the fatigue life on ageing tactical assets. The BAe 146M/Avro RJM, however, has a performance capability that means it can realistically undertake some of the more challenging air transport support roles, including operations from unpaved runways.

RAF BAE 146 C3

Sometimes when you write posts you get lucky and cover a story just before it gets covered by everyone else. Equally, the other stories published by everyone else touch on an aspect previously covered on Think Defence. The recent post on UK personnel arriving in Mali as part of security mission there was one of those occasions.

A quick post on the Quick Change RAF BAE 146 C3 it is then.

The press release from the MoD and BAE announced the Release to Service of the two former TNT BAE 146 regional transport aircraft to 32 (The Royal) Squadron, RAF, after being modified by Hawker Beechcraft Services in Broughton under contract from BAE Systems in Prestwick under a £15.5 million deal.

[browser-shot width="600″ url="https://www.gov.uk/government/news/philip-dunne-visits-new-aircraft-at-raf-northolt"]

The contract was announced in January 2012

[browser-shot width="600″ url="http://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/raf-to-fly-second-hand-bae-146s-in-afghanistan-366796/"]

The Flight Global article described how only five of the aircraft specified in the contract notice were available, two of them with TNT Airways, seen then as the most likely supplier; they had finished leasing them to the French Axis Airways.

TNT were indeed the chosen seller, OO-TAZ became ZE707 and OO-TAY, ZE708.

The 146 is actually an impressive aircraft and still in widespread service, including with the RAF.

BAE has continually tried to interest buyers in more military oriented versions equipped with inflight refuelling probes and rear ramps with the latest effort called the 146M.

The BAE 146-200QC aircraft is the QC variant, or Quick Change (or Quiet Conversion depending on who you talk to)

This a great video that highlights the QC flexibility

This means they had a cargo door and cargo floor system in addition to windows which means they can be used in either the passenger or cargo role, providing exactly the kind of flexibility needed.

The 3.33m x1.93m cargo door allows easy loading of pallets and containers.

BAE 146 QT

British Aerospace 146QT

Pallets can be either for cargo or palletised seating which means the entire cargo floor can be used in a mixed configuration, either 94 seats with galley and toilets, 6 pallets or a mix of the two to a maximum cargo payload of just over 10 tonnes.

The C3's will also be able to operate with a newly designed palletised Bergen container from VRR in the Netherlands. I wrote about VRR in an old post on pallets and containers, click here and here.

These forklift-able palletised cargo containers will allow the 54 personnel seated on palletised seating to self-load their Bergens and other baggage, it being carried on the same deck.

From VRR

The total system consists of 2 cargo pallets (108" x 88") and one transition pallet (108"x 61.72") with 2 baggage containers on both the cargo pallets and the transition pallet.

The cargo pallet (88" x 108") is a mechanically fastened type. The strength is achieved through an aluminium stringer-based core to which both top and bottom sheets are attached with rivets. This construction will ensure enough rigidity to facilitate the pallet being lifted with a forklift when loaded to the load limit.

The transition pallet (108"x 61.72") fills the gap between the last seat pallet and the first Modified Cargo Pallet with Baggage Stowage Provisions. In this pallet several inserts are placed to facilitate easy connection to the stowage container. Its forward edge interfaces with the aft edge of the existing seat pallets. The aft edge of this pallet is positioned at the aft end of cargo compartment D.

Photo luminescent emergency escape path marking strips are placed along the pallet, outlining the edges of the aisle. The pallets' surface is covered with anti-skid tape on the aisle, to prevent a slip hazard.

To avoid steps and gaps between the cargo pallets a small ramp is placed on the pallet. Such a ramp is also placed on the aft side of the pallet.

The baggage containers are placed on both the cargo pallets and the transition pallet (two per pallet). The aluminium constructed stowages are placed on the LH and RH side of the pallet, creating an aisle in the middle. The boxes – equipped with D rings in the interior – are mounted on the pallet.

Neat eh

In addition to a new paint job the aircraft have been modified to include appropriate military communications equipment (HF, UHF and SATCOM), Raytheon Successor Identification Friend or Foe (SIFF), an armoured flight deck, fuel tank inerting, upgrades to the air conditioning and significantly, a full Defensive Aids System or DAS to Theatre Entry Specification.

The DAS fit comprises a Directional Infrared Countermeasures (DIRCM) turret under the nose and tail and countermeasure flare launchers similar, one would assume, to those found on the other pair of 146's in service with the RAF, the CC2's

The Deployed Operating Base in Bahrain will be the engineering hub for the 146 C Mk3's with one aircraft based at Bahrain and Kandahar respectively.

The BAE 146 is a rugged and flexible aircraft, quiet with a good short field performance and low noise level designed for small regional airports and decent range for the class.

With credit to the Aviation Anorak, this is my favourite image of the 146, in Libya.

An Air Libya BAe-146-300 aircraft takes off from Rhebat air strip, a stretch of mountain highway, near the Nafusa Mountains, western Libya

They have been obtained under the Urgent Operational Requirement process so whether they remain in service post Afghanistan is open to question, it would be nice to think they would be retained.

What's not to like?

The is a sensible and low cost purchase of an aircraft already in service and one that will provide a useful boost in the Afghanistan drawdown period.

I do hope they remain in service, the mixed cargo/passenger flexibility afforded by the palletised configuration stands in stark contrast to the passenger only offering of the several billion pounds worth of FSTA Voyagers.

BAE Systems anticipates increased interest in BAe 146M military transport

BAE Systems expects to see a renewed growth in interest in its BAe 146M military transport aircraft as the regional airlines begin replacing their fleets with newer types that will soon be introduced into global service, a company official noted on 1 October.

Speaking under the Chatham House Rule at an event in London, the official said that the company's ability to provide refurbished BAe 146 jets to the military transport market had until now been hamstrung by delays in the introduction into service of the new Bombardier C-Series regional airliner that is being procured by many airlines to replace them. With the C-Series now just months away from being fielded, the opportunity exists for BAE Systems to really push its BAe 146M as the airlines begin returning their aircraft to the company.

"The delay in the C-series meant that the return of [used 146s] to BAE Systems was delayed, but now there is an opportunity in the marketplace that wasn't there a couple of years ago," the official said.

The concept of the military transport variant BAe 146M was first launched by BAE Systems in September 2009 as a cheap and capable option for those nations needing tactical fixed-wing airlift. The platform is being offered to military air arms in either a passenger or freighter configuration, or as a combination of the two. As pure passenger aircraft these platforms will seat between 80 and 109 passengers, while as freighters they will carry 11 to 12.5 tonnes of freight.

Performance figures released by the company give a converted 146-200 cargo variant (146-200QT) a range of approximately 1,650 nm with a payload of about 11.5 tonnes. A 146-300QT will be able to operate out to just over 1,600 nm with a payload of about 12.5 tonnes. An extended range (ER) 146-300QT concept variant will be able to haul 12.5 tonnes over 2,200 nm.
