Is Russia's S-300 better than USA's Patriot?

27.02.2013

I was once asked in a television interview: "Which anti-aircraft missile system is better: Russia's S-300 or the U.S. Patriot?" A concise answer was needed, and I said that the S-300 was better. Was I right?

If you look at the performance characteristics of the systems, then the answer was correct. In conflicts such as Iran - Iraq, India - Pakistan, where forces were relevantly equal, the answer was correct as well. However, when it comes to a possible attack of the U.S. or Israel against the "third world" countries, such as Iran, Syria and others, Russia's S-300 will certainly fail. Why?

It will happen for the reason that we already had during the Great Patriotic War. In June 22, 1941, our tanks KV and T-34 were much better than the German vehicles, but the losses among our tanks in autumn and summer campaigns in 1941 were larger than those of Nazi Germany. German tanks were acting in close coordination with infantry, artillery, air force and were supplemented with excellent radio stations.

Two Iraqi wars, the war in Yugoslavia and other conflicts showed that the Americans were striving for absolute predominance in aviation and electronic means of warfare. They have dozens of AWACS and 30-40 spacecraft of all types. Do I have to explain that a division or two of S-300 (S-400) can not act alone against such an armada?

If so, should the countries of the "third world" surrender to the mercy of Uncle Sam? It is about time Russian generals should study the history of USA's postwar campaigns. Here is the list: Korea, Vietnam, the first Iraq war, the Yugoslav war. The Americans won in the last two cases, albeit partially. The Yankees and the "enlightened explorers" deployed a huge amphibious fleet in the Persian Gulf in 1991 and planned to land two U.S. marine divisions and an English brigade on the coast of Iraq. Alas, all those good fellows spent the Iraqi campaign in the holds of landing vessels. The reason was simple: Iraqi, or rather, old Soviet mines.

During the Korean War in 1951, the American armada of ships could not land its commandos for two weeks. Again, it was because of old Soviet and tsarist (!) mines.

In 1991, NATO aircraft bombed Belgrade and other Yugoslav cities, as well as power plants, hospitals, television stations, and even the Chinese Embassy. The Yugoslavs capitulated and agreed to withdraw troops from Kosovo under NATO's control. And then came the hour of shame for the USAF and NATO. The Yugoslavs withdrew about 90% of their military equipment unharmed: tanks, armored vehicles, multiple rocket launchers, air defense missile systems, etc. Western journalists had only one question - where did NATO bombs fall?

Nowadays, thanks to the technological development, including the development of hand-held computers, the possibilities of sea mines have become literally limitless. There are self-propelled mines. To transport them, one can use old torpedoes: a 533-mm torpedo can deliver a mine to a distance of 30-35 km from the place of release. A 650-mm torpedo can cover the distance of 50-60 km or more.

There are missiles that act like mines. They are launched from the sea floor, at an angle, in the direction of the bottom of a moving vessel. There are torpedoes that act like mines. They can be placed at a depth of up to 1 km, "sleep" there for about 12 months, and then "wake up" when needed.

Finally, there self-burying mines that can bury themselves in the sand or mud, leaving a thin invisible antenna sticking out.

All of these mines, except for self-burying ones, used to be produced in the USSR. However, during the last 22 years, we have seen no news about the production of new mines.

Everyone has heard of Soviet missile systems BM-13, Katyusha. All our generals and historians celebrate their advantage over German 15- and 21-cm missile launchers. Indeed, the effectiveness of the massive use of BM-13 complexes was unquestionable.

However, North Korea was not happy with Katyushas in 1951-1953. They preferred six-barrel 15-cm mortars, known as Vanyusha. The latter could be rolled back into the cave or trench after an attack. What did they have to do with such big complexes as Katyusha? Vanyusha's accuracy was much higher too.

Let's take the MLRS Smerch that has a range of 70 km. This is great! But its combat vehicle, loaded with missiles, weighs 43.7 tons. A missile is 7.6 meters long and it weighs 800 kilos. Everything can be tolerated if one has advantage in the air. And if not? Why not cutting, or rather, disassembling a Smerch into four parts? One would not need a huge vehicle, such as MAZ-543M, to transport the system. Off-road vehicles or even camels would be enough.

The same can be done to air defense complexes. Ask any American general, what dominance in the air means. It is unlikely that he will be satisfied with a possibility of stealth bombers or supersonic F-16 flying freely over battlefield. The Yankees prefer widebody aircraft, such as AWACS, or AC-130 military transport vehicles, etc.

Why not making a separable version of the Tor missile to be able to combat them? A missile like that weighs 165 kilos. If disassembled into two parts, it could be transported quickly to any location to be assembled there again.

Why not creating new anti-aircraft missile systems that would be more powerful than Igla-1? Its outdated infrared guidance system may not work all the time. It can not hit aircraft flying from the direction of the sun, for example.

More importantly, one should increase the range of MANPADS at least twice. They need to be able to strike aircraft not only during take-off, but also under cruise condition. To achieve this, one may replace the solid-propellant engine with a more powerful solid fuel ramjet engine. This can be done for 3M9 Tor missiles or Era MANPADS that were developed in the 1970s. If it makes them heavier, it could be possible to disassemble them into two modules, weighing 30 kilos each.

Demountable Tor systems and heavy MANPADS will deprive enemy of air superiority even under the condition of superiority in attack aircraft, electronic warfare equipment and dozens of satellites.

Jawel, alleen heeft het weinig te maken met de S300 vs de patriot. Hij vraagt zich meer af hoe je een westerse luchtmacht stopt, haalt daarbij allerhande kort door de bocht en on-onderbouwde voorbeelden aan.

S-300: NATO's nightmare and perhaps Russia's too

July 19, 2013 Rakesh Krishnan Simha

The S-300 surface to air missile is vital for Syria's air defences, but Moscow is wary of the complications the weapon could create – both for itself and the Middle East.

Israeli warplanes have attacked targets in Syria with such regularity this year that Syrian airspace is beginning to look like Swiss cheese.

Because the older generation of surface to air missile (SAM) systems in Syria's inventory is unable to stop the Israelis, Syria is desperately seeking the advanced – and much delayed – S-300 missile.

SAMs have caused heavy attrition of enemy aircraft and missiles in several conflicts. Russia's SA-2 and SA-6 missiles as well as Israel's Iron Dome are the classic examples.

The legacy of the venerable SA-2 and SA-6 missiles continues through their modern successors, including the S-300, S-400 and the astounding S-500. Because it can directly as well as indirectly influence the outcome of a war, the new generation Russian SAM is considered a strategic weapon. This is remarkable for a non-nuclear missile.

Indeed, it is a measure of the S-300's fear factor that both Israel and the United States are strongly against its sales to Syria and Iran.

S-300: What it can do, and cannot

The S-300 has impressive DNA – it is a development of the S-75 missile that famously shot down the U-2 spy plane over Russia in 1960, and embarrassed the Eisenhower administration.

Weaponised in the 1970s to replace the first generation SAMs, the S-300 is an easy to use, fire-and-forget road mobile system designed to repulse massive air strikes. With a range of 5-150 km, the system can track up to 12 targets and engage six of them separately. In terms of accuracy, the Russians claim a single shot kill probability of 80-93 percent against aircraft.

No existing aircraft can outrun the missile which travels at 7200 km/h and has a maximum altitude of 98,000 ft. Also, the latest versions of the S-300 can hit aircraft and missiles flying as low as 20 ft – from above.

Unlike the American Patriot, which was hyped as a Scud killer but was in fact a resounding dud, the Russian missile actually works. According to Boris Bunkin, the chief designer of the S-300, Desert Storm demonstrated it is not enough to hit a ballistic missile and cause it to lose trajectory; it is important to destroy its warhead. Bunkin solved this problem. His team conducted tests involving live Scud missiles, demonstrating the S-300 effectively destroys warheads at the point of interception.

Robert Hewson, editor of IHS Jane's Air-Launched Weapons, describes the S-300 system as formidable and respected by Western military planners: "If your plan is to waltz into Syrian airspace and start bombing things, this is a big wrinkle."

The missile also has a narrow radar beam, which is not only difficult to detect but hard to jam. To be sure, the S-300 is not completely immune to electronic countermeasures, an area in which Israel excels. In 1982 Israeli aircraft destroyed 19 Syrian missile batteries after blinding them electronically.

Contrary to media reports, the S-300 is not a standalone "game changer". It becomes deadly when used alongside anti-aircraft artillery (AAA) and fighter aircraft. By dominating high altitude air space, SAMs drive enemy aircraft down into a "flak trap" where AAA batteries and air defence fighters await them.

Countries that integrate this three-tier system – SAMs covering higher altitudes, AAA protecting the lower altitudes and air defence fighters patrolling the space in between – can significantly increase the costs for attacking air forces.

A look at a couple of conflicts in which these missiles helped user countries achieve near strategic parity with more powerful forces will help understand what the fuss is all about.

Vietnam: Unsafe at any height

The Vietnamese organised what was perhaps the most sophisticated and effective anti-aircraft defence in the history of warfare. "It was a multi-level, dynamically integrated defence that included radar warning systems, MiG jet fighters, SAMs, AAA of various calibers and small arms fire," writes Vietnamese General Van Tien in the book American Failure.

As soon as US aircraft entered this aerial meat grinder, Vietnamese army radars vectored MiG fighters to intercept the attacking bombers and their fighter escorts. The information was also passed on to SAM command centres.

In order to counter the SAMs, US aircraft started using electronic countermeasure devices on their wingtips. This reduced the planes' manoeuvrability and made them more vulnerable to MiG attacks.

"When a SAM was actually coming at them, pilots performed a tight turning dive to outmanoeuvre the missile, but this tactic had the undesirable effect of bringing them down again into the range of AAA," writes Robert Dorr in Air War Hanoi.

Between 1964 and 1973 the Vietnamese AAA alone downed 740 US Air Force fighter aircraft. They also shot down hundreds of helicopters, several F-111 fighter bombers and 15 irreplaceable B-52 strategic bombers. The B-52s were lost despite the use of electronic jamming aircraft, defence suppression aircraft and fighter escorts. Interestingly, after the Vietnamese ran out of SAMs the USAF did not lose any more B-52s.

SAMs over Sinai

In the 1973 Arab-Israeli War, Russian crews operating SA-2 and SA-6 missiles employed the same tactics as the Vietnamese – by denying Israeli aircraft the use of high and medium altitude airspace, the SAMs forced enemy aircraft down into Arab AAA range. The Israelis admit they lost 303 aircraft. The actual number is probably higher.

Military analyst Sharad Joshi writes in the paper, Israel's Nuclear Policy: A Cost-Benefit Analysis: "The same Israeli Air Force, which had practically demolished the entire Egyptian Air Force in the first few hours of the 1967 war, was neutralised for the early part of the 1973 war."

Enter the S-300

If – or when – the S-300 arrives in Syria it will be a landmark moment. For the first time in the history of the Middle East, an Arab nation will have the ability to shoot down Israeli aircraft over Israel. An S-300 missile fired from Damascus will blow away an aircraft over central Tel Aviv in about 107 seconds, giving the Israelis virtually no reaction time.

To the Israeli Defence Forces, this is an unacceptable escalation. Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Yaalon warned: "The shipments haven't set out yet and I hope they won't. If they do arrive in Syria, god forbid, we'll know what to do."

Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister, Sergey Ryabkov, shot back that the delivery of the missiles would be a stabilising factor that could dissuade "some hotheads" from entering the conflict.

The danger for Israel here is it could easily fall into the "flak trap". In fact, it was the huge number of sorties conducted to suppress SAM systems that led to the high attrition rate of American and Israeli aircraft four decades ago.

Middle East manoeuvres

The Syrian military is not in the same league as the highly trained, motivated and brilliant Vietnamese. Syria's anti-aircraft defences seem unable to stop the Israeli raids, and there is no guarantee they will use the S-300 effectively. There have been four strikes on Syrian military sites this year, and on each occasion the Israelis targeted weapons it feared were on their way to the Hezbollah.

Russia, therefore, has reason to be wary. If the Israelis take out the S-300 batteries, it would leave one of the world's most feared weapons a little less feared. "The delay is all about the Russians understanding the Israeli situation and not wanting to trigger a response that would hurt Russia," says Strategy Page.

Right now there are two options on the table. One, Russia can step up the training of Syrian missile crews before dispatching the latest – not stripped down export – versions of the missiles.

Another option is to supply the S-300 on the condition they will be operated by Russians, who would not only perform better in a conflict, but by their very presence deter an Israeli raid. A foolhardy Israeli attack on Russian-manned batteries will invite a massive backlash from Moscow, including increased support to the Iran-Syria-Hezbollah alliance. The trickle of Russian weapons will in all likelihood turn into a torrent.

You can almost hear Assad tell the Israelis: "Go ahead, make my day."

Ja:
CitaatSince 1995 India has been negotiating with Russia regarding purchase of the S-300, in response to Pakistan's deployment of M-11 missiles from China. In 1995 Russian Defense Deputy Minister Kokoshin offered to sell S-300 missiles during his trip to India. Following this offer Indian officials started negotiations with the Russian manufacturers, and in August 1995 the Indian Defense Secretary Nambiar went to Russia to observe tests of the missiles near Moscow. The $1 billion purchase is said to include six S-300 systems, with each combat system consisting of 48 missiles. Reportedly in June 1996 27 S-300 missiles were delivered to India.

Russia to Unveil New Air Defense System at MAKS-2013

MOSCOW, August 24 (RIA Novosti) – Russia's Almaz-Antei corporation will showcase for the first time its newest S-350E Vityaz mid-range air defense system at the upcoming MAKS-2013 air show near Moscow, the company said.

The Vityaz, which is expected to replace the outdated S-300 systems, is superior to similar foreign models, according to Almaz-Antei statement released on Friday.

The new Russian system was reportedly shown to President Vladimir Putin during his June 19 visit to a St. Petersburg plant where it is being manufactured by the Almaz-Antei corporation.

The system has been in the works since 2007 and features advanced all-aspect phased array radar, a new mobile command post and a launcher carrying 12 vertical-launch missiles, which will use a variant of the 9M96 active radar homing missile, according to the company.

Almaz-Antey plans to hand over the system to the Russian Defense Ministry for testing before the end of 2013 and start deliveries to the Russian military next year.

The Vityaz will complement the Morfey, the S-400 and the S-500 air defense systems in the future aerospace defense network to engage targets at ranges from five to 400 kilometers, and at altitudes from five meters to near space.

Bad, or Worse? Depends on the Meaning of 'S-300'

By: J. E. Dyer
Published: April 20th, 2015

Readers will have seen by now that Vladimir Putin has lifted Russia's 2010 ban on selling the S-300 air defense missile system to Iran.  For the record, this is bad.  There's a certain amount of nonsense being talked about it, but it is bad.
