Agreements with Thales to build a Polish OPV class ship

Polish Armament Inspectorate concluded on the 12th of December two contracts worth about 100 million euros with the companies under the brand Thales to supply equipment for building OPV-class ship Slazak (Silesian). The Agreements concerned supplying Integrated Combat System (contractor Thales Nederland BV) and the Integrated Communications System (Thales Electronic Systems GmbH).

The ship is created in the Naval Shipyard in Gdynia on the basis of the hull and equipment taken from missile corvette project Gawron (MEKO A-100) constructed since 2001. The plan is to build and transfer the ship to November 2016. Adding up all the previously mentioned expenses, we can determine the cost of building a Silesian OPV at about 240 million euros (1 billion zloty).

With the contracts for the purchase of equipment, the Ministry of Economy signed an agreement offsets with Thales Nederland BV and Thales Electronic Systems GmbH. The offsets are worth 83 million Euro and the time of its implementation will take 10 years. Polish companies and military units will receive technologies for servicing, repairing systems (level OLM / ILM ) and training package for operators of the ship's crew.

Silesian will be 95 meters long and 2,150 tons full displacement. The ship will contain the corvette's drive in the form of turbines that will generate high as for the patrol ship, maximum speed of 30 knots. The ship will be armed with an automatic gun caliber 76 mm and two unmanned positions with guns caliber 30 mm. Additionally, the board will be enriched with the helicopter landing deck.

Patrol ship will be the first new combat ship built for the Polish Navy since 20 years. His acquisition initiates naval modernization program that will be run until 2030. Additionally, it includes the intention to buy 3 submarines, 3 missile corvettes, 3 OPVs and 3 minehunters. For the modernization program, Poland plans to spend annually about 240 million euros (1 billion zloty).
