Pakistan Signs LoI for Four Turkish Ada-class Corvettes

Pakistan to Get Hi-Tech Ships to Defend Gwadar and Karachi Ports

A letter of Intent was inked between Pakistan and Turkey for the sale of four Hi-tech Turkish MILGEM Ada Corvettes to the Pakistan Navy. Pakistan will use these MILGEM Ada Corvettes to guard both its Gwadar and Karachi ports from external threats.

The letter was signed by Pakistan's Minister of Defense Production Rana Tanveer Hussain, Turkey's Minister of Defence Fikri Işık and Turkish defense contractor Savunma Teknolojileri Muhendislik Ve Ticaret.

The contract will be finalized by June 30, 2017.

About MILGEM Ada Corvette

It is a modern combat warship with indigenous anti-submarine warfare and high-seas patrol capabilities. The design of the ship helps it to remain hidden. It has 2 squad anti-ship missile launchers with a 76mm main gun and a point-defense missile system in the Rolling Airframe Missile.

"Each MILGEM Ada would have cost $300 million but Pakistan is planning to use its own industry for some of the equipment, the price will drop to $250 million per ship", said STM CEO Davut Yilma.

Apart from Pakistan, many other countries are trying to buy these Corvette from Turkey which includes countries like Bangladesh, Ukraine, and Canada.

Moreover, security has been tightened in Gwadar due to the terrorist attack by unknown assailants on workers. In the aftermath of that attack, 8 workers were killed by terrorists.

The Chief Minister of Balochistan, Sanaullah Zehri said, "the conspiracy of creating obstacles in the way of progress and prosperity in Balochistan will be foiled at all costs".

Government's recent move indicates that Pakistan is looking to replace US subsystems with the alternate technology from Turkey and China. Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works (KSEW) will be involved in MILGEM Ada Corvette project and will assemble the ships using manufactured kits from Turkey and integrate its own weapon into the ships.

Turkey designed ALTAY-AHT urban operations tank in response to hybrid and asymmetrical threats

Turkish vehicle manufacturer Otokar has unveiled its new ALTAY-AHT urban operations tank at the at the 13th International Defense Industry Fair (IDEF'17).

The ALTAY-AHT urban operations tank has been designed for Turkish military taking into account the experience of fighting in Syria and Iraq.

"In response to hybrid and asymmetrical threats and conditions where unconventional forces and methods are employed spreading more widely, we designed ALTAY-AHT Urban Operations Tank using our own resources that will meet future needs of Turkish Armed Forces and will have high export potential," – said Otokar General Manager Serdar Gorguc.

According to a company spokesperson that one of the key difference between new ALTAY-AHT Urban Operations Tank and the base's version of ALTAY tank is that the tank is fitted with a Jammer against remote control IED attacks. The Gunshot Detection System can identify the direction of sniper threats, the Laser Warning System can identify the threats by laser guided anti-tank missiles, and laser range finders that measure distance.

The direction of the identified threat can be automatically smoked using the Soft Kill (Smart Smoke Curtain) The EOS, RCWS and tank turret can be automatically directed to the threat depending on the user's preference.

The tank is fitted with a directional dozer blade that can be operated by the driver, and used for a variety of tasks such as preparing the defence lines, clearing the obstacles on the battlefield, and filling the tank trenches.

The ALTAY-AHT Urban Operations Tank equipped with Explosive Reactive Armour (ERA) and Bar Armour Systems are applied on the tank to enhance its survivability against guided and unguided ballistic missile attacks that pose great threat in 360-degrees for main battle tanks in hybrid and asymmetric combat conditions.

Situational awareness improved with the addition of Telescopic Elevated Observation System (EOS), YAMGÖZ system that enables 360-degrees awareness, and repositioning of remote control weapon stations (RCWS).

The ALTAY project was launched in 2009, and the main battle tank, with increased survivability, mobility and firing power, has delivered superior performance in challenging
tests conducted in all climatic and terrain conditions for the last two years. The "Qualification Tests" conducted by the Undersecretariat of Defense Industry, and Land Forces Command on bases version of ALTAY tank, which has achieved very high accuracy in firing tests carried out for diverse scenarios in all kinds of weather conditions and distances, were completed in February 2017.

Turkey to ink 'largest ever export deal for local industry'

The Turkish government is about to finalize its efforts to ink two major naval export deals totaling between $1.5 billion and $2 billion, official sources said on condition of strict anonymity.

"This will be the largest ever export deal for Turkey's local industry," one source said.

An official from Turkey's procurement office, the Undersecretariat for Defense Industries (SSM in its Turkish acronym) did not comment, saying that it would be up to the government when and how to announce such big deals. But a senior shipyard executive confirmed "matured" talks with both countries. "The government will announce it when it thinks is the good time to announce."

The official source said one of the deals, with Saudi Arabia, would involve the sale of at least two I-class (Istanbul-class) MILGEM corvettes or frigates. Industry sources said each vessel, coming in at 3-3.5 tons, would cost between $300 million and $500 million.

.../...

The I-class frigate now going to Saudi Arabia is variant of the Ada-class corvette with a longer hull (by 14 meters) and heavier displacement (3,000-tons vs. 2,400-tons). It has similar anti-submarine warfare capabilities but also features a vertical launch system for a medium-range surface-to-air missile. It has 16 additional sub-sonic anti-ship missiles compared to eight on the Ada-class vessel.

The I-class frigate will be configured with a Mk.41 vertical launch system with the RIM-162 Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile. Both classes of vessels will be armed with one 76 mm main gun, two 12.7 mm guns, Mk. 46 lightweight anti-submarine warfare torpedoes, and RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missile. It will also feature a hangar and flight deck for a naval utility helicopter.

IDEF 2017: Turkey progressing towards TF-X next-gen fighter jet development
