The Indian Navy has called for proposals to build four large helicopter carriers/amphibious ships.
Indian sites were consulted but they have no design to submit so foreign partners were approached to make offers.
Several international groups should be in the running:
French DCNS with its projection and command vessel (BPC – Mistral class),
Italian Fincantieri with its Multifunctional Ship (MS),
Spain's Navantia with the Buque of Proyecciones Estratégica (BPE) and the
South Koreans with a model derived from the helicopter-carrying assault ship Dokdo. At first glance, DCNS and Fincantieri could have an advantage as both manufacturers are already working with the Indian Navy.
The French programs
- Scorpene submarines and
- corvette P75 engines and
The Italians with
- aircraft carrier Vikrant (derived from the Cavour) and
- oil tanker class Deepak.
DCNS is even the most established foreign manufacturer in India, where it has a subsidiary and is making significant technology transfers.
It can also highlight the recent choice of Russia, a leading provider of the Indian army, for the BPCs. Competition should still be very tough as other manufacturers, have more than one string to their bow.
