Britse oorlogsbodem zet koers richting Falklands

Groot-Brittannië stuurt een van zijn nieuwste en modernste oologsbodems naar de Falkland-eilanden. Het was al langer gepland om de HMS Dauntless daar te stationeren, deelde het ministerie van Defensie vandaag mee.
Het gaat niet om een reactie op de jongste spanningen tussen Argentinië en het Verenigd Koninkrijk over de eilandengroep. Het schip zal in de komende weken het ruime sop kiezen en ter plaatse een andere oorlogsbodem vervangen.

Discussie
Ongeveer 30 jaar na het uitbreken van de Falkland-oorlog was er de afgelopen weken een verhitte politieke discussie over de eilanden die tot het koninkrijk behoren, maar waarop Argentinië aanspraak maakt. Buenos Aires had onder andere getracht olieboringen van de Britten te verhinderen. Bovendien ontzegde Argentinië samen met buurlanden Brazilië en Uruguay schepen varend onder de Falklandvlag de havens van de landen binnen te lopen. De Britse premier David Cameron beschuldigde Argentinië van 'kolonistisch' gedrag.

Routine
De Royal Navy is sinds vele jaren in het zuiden van de Atlantische Oceaan aanwezig, verklaarde een woordvoerder van de Britse marine. Bij de aflossing van de schepen gaat het om een "routine-operatie". Tijdens de Falkland-oorlog tussen Argentinië en het Verenigd Koninkrijk in 1982 verloren bijna duizend mensen van beide kampen het leven.

David Cameron accused Argentina of 'colonialism' for threatening the Falkland Islands yesterday after being warned the regime in Buenos Aires is plotting a mock 'fishermen's invasion'.

He dramatically raised the diplomatic stakes during an exchange at Prime Minister's Questions.
The accusation by the Prime Minister came as it emerged that the Ministry of Defence has 'contingency plans' in place enabling troops to be deployed swiftly in an emergency to the Falklands via Ascension Island.
Last night Argentina's interior minister Florencio Randazzo hit back after Mr Cameron approved the MoD plans, saying: 'It is absolutely offensive especially in the case of Britain. History clearly shows what its attitude to the world was.'

The war of words is fresh evidence of the increasing tension between the two countries in the run-up to the 30th anniversary of the invasion of the islands by Argentina in April 1982 and their liberation by British forces.

Days ago, the Prime Minister hosted a National Security Council summit which was devoted to the defence of the islands, which are claimed by Argentina as Las Malvinas.

Ministers were shown plans drawn up to combat a campaign of intimidation planned by Argentina to mark the anniversary.

Mr Cameron was warned at the meeting of intelligence showing that Argentine fishermen could be sent to land on the Falklands and the neighbouring island of South Georgia to plant an Argentine flag this spring.
The mock invasion fears have echoes of the 1982 conflict which began when an Argentine force landed on South Georgia, which was defended by a small company of Royal Marines.

Chief of the Defence Staff General Sir David Richards has already outlined Britain's contingency plans and reassured Mr Cameron that Britain can defend the islands.

But ministers and spy chiefs warned the Prime Minister that Argentine president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner will use the anniversary as the pretext to 'raise the temperature'.

At the NSC summit, Mr Cameron led a series of war game discussions about how to respond to a series of provocations by Argentina.

The NSC agreed that the Falklands police – rather than the Armed Forces – would be used to combat a flag-planting stunt by the Argentines.

But Mr Cameron went public with details of the meeting yesterday to deliver a 'strong message' to Buenos Aires that the UK will respond militarily if Argentina tries to reclaim the islands.

TENSIONS RISE AFTER ROYAL NAVY SHIP DOCKS IN URUGUAY EN ROUTE TO FALKLANDSA Royal Navy ship caused outrage in South America earlier this month after docking in Uruguay as tensions build ahead of the 30th anniversary of the Falklands War.

HMS Protector's presence in the port of Montevideo on January 5 came days after the Mercosur bloc, made up of Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay, agreed a pact to close ports to Falklands vessels.

It had made a 'routine stop' on its way to the islands.

A photo of the Portsmouth-based ice patrol ship appeared on the front page of Uruguayan national newspaper El Observador with the headline 'English boat in the port'.

The article was critical of Uruguayan port authorities for allowing Protector to stop over ahead of going on to the Falklands.

It was the Uruguayan government - in an act of solidarity with Argentina - which proposed the move to close ports to vessels carrying the 'illegal' Falklands flag at a summit in Montevideo on December 21.

But Uruguayan port authorities claim there was nothing to stop HMS Protector coming into Montevideo on December 30 because she sails under the Royal Navy's White Ensign.

Commentators say the new row exposes cracks in Uruguay's support for Argentina.
Mr Cameron said he ordered the NSC discussion so he could 'make sure our defences and everything else is in order'.

He added: 'It is important for Britain to send a clear message that as long as people in the Falklands want to remain British, we respect that right of self-determination.

'The reason for holding a National Security Council is to make sure nobody is in any doubt that Britain supports that right of self-determination, and we will go on doing so for as long as people in the Falklands want to continue in that way. I think it is important that everyone understands that.'

The NSC also heard that Prince William will go ahead with a posting to the Falklands as a search and rescue pilot next month. Argentina has called the posting a 'provocation'.

General Richards detailed the military assets defending the islands and made clear that reinforcements could be sent quickly.

Forces based on the islands include four Eurofighter Typhoons and 150 troops, while the surrounding seas are patrolled by the frigate Montrose, the offshore patrol vessel Clyde and survey ship Protector.

A Government source said: 'Kirchner is highly unpredictable. The meeting was designed to make sure we are totally plugged into where the threats might come from.

'We think there will be a further push at interfering efforts from Argentina.'

Mr Cameron also outlined plans for a series of events to honour the 255 British servicemen and three islanders who died in the 1982 war.

Die zijn er al, geen heel squadron, maar wel een paar. Misschien kan daar een opleidingscentrum worden geplaatst voor 'air-sea' warfare. Goed excuus om er wat meer troepen en materieel neer te zetten, en sowieso een groot en rustig oefengebied. Dat excuus hebben de britten volgens BNR dus niet nodig, maar toch.

Indien het cijfer nog niet gewijzigd is staan er ginder 4 EFs...

Dat getal zou ik dan uitbreiden naar minimaal 12 zolang er sprake van een verhoogde spanning is.

Als de Argentijnen nog een move willen maken, die op een nieuwe nederlaag zal uitlopen, moeten ze opschieten, als in 2016 de QE2 rondvaart, zijn ze volledig kansloos, mits er vliegtuigen op staan natuurlijk...

De F35C zal rond 2020 zijn intrede doen (als deze kst het, gezien de recente ontwikkelingen gaat redden)

Meer Britse troepen naar Falklands

De Britse premier Cameron wil op zeer korte termijn meer militairen naar de Falkland-eilanden bij Argentinië sturen.

Dat hebben bronnen bij Defensie laten weten, meldt The Times donderdag. De oplopende spanning met Argentinië over de soevereiniteit over de eilandengroep zou de belangrijkste oorzaak zijn. Prins William, de oudste zoon van kroonprins Charles, zou ook deel uitmaken van de extra troepen die in februari en maart naar de eilandengroep worden gestuurd. Hij is copiloot voor reddingsoperaties van de Britse luchtmacht.

Spaanse koloniale rijk
Argentinië vindt dat het recht heeft op het bezit van de Falklands, omdat die dichtbij het Zuid-Amerikaanse land liggen en omdat het land de eilanden zou hebben geërfd van het Spaanse koloniale rijk.

In een toespraak beschuldigde Cameron Argentinië woensdag van kolonialisme. Hij zei dat de inwoners van de Falklands Brits willen blijven, maar dat Argentinië dat niet wil accepteren. "De soevereiniteit over de eilanden ligt voor Argentinië niet voor het oprapen", waarschuwde Cameron. In een reactie noemde de Argentijnse regering de verklaring van Cameron "zeer beledigend".

30 jaar geleden
In het voorjaar is het 30 jaar geleden dat Argentijnse militairen de eilandengroep binnenvielen. In de oorlog die daarop volgde, sneuvelden 650 Argentijnse en 250 Britse militairen. De oorlog eindigde op 14 juni 1982 met een Argentijnse nederlaag.

Eerlijk gezegd denk ik dat het allemaal wel niet zo'n vaart zal lopen met nucleaire subs in Zuid-Amerika.
Die dingen kosten een pak geld, geld dat in het verleden alleen de Franse en Britse marines (in Europa) daaraan wilden/konden besteden.

klopt wel, maar dat vraag wel weer...coordinatie en erkenning dat samenwerking meerwaarde heeft. Voorlopig wil nog Nederland, nog Frankrijk, nog de UK toegeven dat de overzeese gebiedsdelen niet meer (afdoende) verdedigbaar zijn. Derhalve komt de samenwerking ook niet echt van de grond.

En dus lijkt mij het raadzaam om voorlopig...zij het goed doordacht en met focus op standaardisatie...voldoende eigen middelen te behouden. Maar daar zijn de meeste het hier wel over eens. In Den Haag ziet men dat ogenschijnlijk anders. 

In tegenstelling tot Zuid Amerika dus, al is de kans ook best wel aanwezig dat de samenwerking tussen Argentinië en Brazilië misloopt, of tussen welke twee andere landen dan ook. Het is onze beste hoop dan maar.

En of beide landen zich vergalopperen aan dit soort kostbare ambitieuze en ergens ook wel politieke projecten...en onvoldoende investeren daardoor in meer betaalbare doch zeer bruikbare middelen voor hun krijgsmachten.

En wij maar waarschuwen tegen de bezuinigingen (Europees) en zie, het is net een spelletje Risk.... en de volgende ronde gaan wij (als westen) simpelweg verliezen omdat er te weinig pionnetjes op hun plaats staan, of beschikbaar zijn).

Het probleem is dat wij=EU-lidstaten samen meer dan genoeg middelen hebben...alleen is er van goede samenwerking, interoperabiliteit, standaardisatie en een serieuze Europese defensieorganisatie nog helemaal geen sprake.

Ik verwacht trouwens ook niet dat de Argentijnen weer gekke dingen gaan doen richting de Falkland eilanden. De "koude oorlog" zal dus nog wel een duren daar.  

Het zal ook nog wel even duren voor de landen daar de middelen hebben om hun belangen elders op de wereld te beschermen...de eerste zorg ligt denk ik op dit moment meer richting Azië...als ook het Midden-Oosten en Noord-Afrika.

Maar Argentinië en Brazilië pakken wel door nu...ben benieuwd in hoeverre het ook tot samenwerking tussen beide landen komt..of ze elkaar meer als concurrent gaat behandelen..

Wellicht hebben we genoeg middelen en mensen, echter een hopeloos verdeelde club van "tich"landen met een veelvoud aan politieke clubjes.. en een dito aantal haantjes.

Zet dit nu eens af tegen de inspiraties van Zuid Amerika, Azie en het Midden Oosten. Als deze landen het slim aanpakken in deze economische crisis (die nauwelijks voor hun geldt) dan zijn wij binnen nu en 10 á 20 jaar geen enkele tegenstand meer.

Wij staan aan de vooravond van een verrassing die we liever niet zien (economisch en militair)... Als het zo doorgaat dan verhuizen wij van de 1e naar de 2e wereld.

Waarom zou de rest van de wereld de huidige eerste wereld vertrouwen, we handelen slechts uit belangen.

Ik blijff het roepen: poppetjes met een houdbaarheidsdatum van 4 tot 8 jaar interesseerd het niet, je gaat immers niet in de politiek om iets voor de gemeenschap te bereiken (uitzonderingen uitgezonderd) maar om in een gespreid bedje te komen.

Je zou het starfbaar moeten stellen.. maar helaas dat gaat het in de politiek nooit redden.

Brazil Tightens Noose On Falkland-Flagged Shipping, Affirms Support To Argentina

Brazil plans to impose a ban on Falkland-flagged shipping vessels from entering its waters. According to a UPI report, the country intends to pledge its support to Argentina's claims that sees British oil exploration in the Falkland waters illegal, a view supported by many Latin American countries in international forums. In the recently held bilateral talks between the two countries in Brasilia, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff affirmed the country's backing Argentina's claim on Flaklands, a land that was occupied by the Argentinians in the year 1982 but was later reclaimed by the British forces in a 74 day conflict that saw many civilians and troops die.

The move comes in light of the potential oil fields in the island waters coming under focus of many British oil exploration firms in the recent times, that tipped the scales in favour of Argentinian claims and garnered support from most South American nations. Brazil in particular has taken it a step forward by hardening its stance and support to the Argentinian sovereignty of the region and calling the British led activities "illegal."

In a communique that was released soon after the summit, Brazil unequivocally supported the legitamacy of the "rights of the Argentine republic in the sovereignty dispute relative to the Malvinas, South Georgia and South Sandwich islands and its adjoining maritime spaces."

It further read, "this position stands on the long tradition of Brazilian diplomacy in support for the Argentine claim and which is based on the deep rooted historic event of 1833 when through an act of force Argentina was expulsed from the Malvinas territory"

'The President of the Federative Republic of Brazil reaffirms its commitment with the 26 November 2010 UNASUR Declaration to adopt in conformity with International Law and respective domestic legislations, all measures susceptible of being regulated to impede the access to its ports of vessels flying the 'illegal' colours of the Malvinas Islands,' it said.

Argentina to build nuclear submarine, sparking fears over future of Falkland Islands

Argentina is developing a nuclear-powered submarine for its navy - sparking fears that the country is getting ready to ramp up its interest in the Falkland Islands even further.

Defence Minister Andrea Puricelli said President Cristina Kirchner had personally requested the project which will add nuclear propulsion to a submarine already under construction.

He also suggested more would follow.

The new vessel will go underwater more quickly and for longer than its diesel predecessors - with the country hoping it will project power and act as a deterrent to potential adversaries.

The announcement comes at a time of increased tension over the sovereignty of the Falklands, which British forces won back in a 10-week conflict in 1982 following an Argentine invasion.

Argentina has not revealed specifically why it is spending millions of dollars on the project, but defence experts have said it could be down to 'neighbour envy'.

Brazil is lavishing tens of billions of dollars on military regeneration, which it sees as a future export earner, and a nuclear-powered submarine is part of the plan.

Analysts also said the initiative could be due to the stepping up of a campaign to get Britain out of the Falklands.

Argentina has already blocked Falklands shipping and is punishing vessel operators with any suspected links to the islands.

The submarines will not be armed with nuclear weapons, but with a conventional arsenal.

Eric Wertheim, author and editor of the U.S. Naval Institute's Combat Fleets of the World guide, told the Telegraph: 'British naval power is at a historic low due to budget cuts and the strain of the last decade's combat operations.

'Certainly, this is a symbol that Argentina has not forgotten. They don't want to be seen as a second rate power. I think the way that Britain would be able to protect the Falklands would be purely defensive before an attack happened.

'The ability to take the Falklands back once it is taken is decreasing monthly. It seemed insurmountable in 1982 but it seems a lot more insurmountable today.'

Mr Puricelli said the submarine ARA Santa Fe, which has been in a shipyard for 'several years', would be given nuclear propulation.

It had been due for completion, as a conventional model, in 2015. It is now likely to take much longer for the upgrade to be completed.
