The night before Israel's exercise for defending the home front against missile attack entered its fifth and last day on Thursday, May 27, the Syrian Chief of Staff placed all Syrian military units on standby, followed in the morning by a second directive for missile units to go on a war footing and take up firing positions. Reporting this, DEBKAfile's military sources disclose that missile battery commanders were given "target updates," meaning new Israeli targets for attack.

Western intelligence sources report that Wednesday night, long military convoys carrying mobile missiles were sighted rolling down Syrian highways - especial in the North.

Een Israelische aanval op Iran is nu eenmaal onafwendbaar, daar hebben ze geen 'groen licht' vanuit Washington voor nodig.
Dus laat maar komen.    Van sancties zijn ze in Teheran / Qum niet onder de indruk, hoog kinetisch heavy metal wil dan wel eens werken.
Angst voor een Iraanse reactie?  Sla ze zo hard, dat ze het niet in hun hoofd halen om wat terug te doen.

Ik vrees ook dat die Israëlische aanval er inderdaad komt. Anders zou ook de Israëlische mythe ondermijnd worden en worden verschillende zeer ambitieuze Israëlische politieke leiders totaal ongeloofwaardig. De vraag is hoelang vooral Amerika en secundair de EU dit kan tegen houden (ik denk dat beiden nu voor afschrikking en indamming hebben gekozen en niet vernietiging van de Iraanse capaciteiten...maar dat kan met de komst van een andere Amerikaanse president zo weer veranderen).

De gevolgen zullen sowieso groot zijn. Een Iraanse reactie zal niet uitblijven, hoe hard men ook toeslaat. En dat zal schat ik in grote negatieve gevolgen hebben in regio en ook de wereld. Ook op hoe de Islamitische wereld naar het Westen kijkt en dus op onze mensen en belangen daar. Dus ook onze militairen in Afghanistan. En dat allemaal in een tijd van grote economische problemen en instabiliteit. 

Gezien de grote negatieve gevolgen mag ik toch hopen dat het niet weer politieke ego's of een mythe/ideologie/doctrine zal zijn die deze ellende over ons heen zal doen storten. Maar ik vrees dus het ergste.

Een dergelijke oefening is "ideaal" om mensen mentaal voor te bereiden op een aanstaande oorlog. Tel daarbij op dat er een grote Israelische oefening gaande is aan de grens met Libanon en Hezbollah 20.000 man zou hebben gemobiliseerd. Verder is Netanyahu volgende week in Washington voor extra overleg en heeft een onderminister gezegd dat alle voorbereidingen voor een aanval op Iran afgerond zouden zijn. Als je alle berichten bij elkaar optelt ziet het er helemaal niet goed uit.

Home Front Command's week-long emergency preparedness exercise peaks with civilian participation; in the event of real emergency, second alarm will sound immediately after first.

The siren sounding at 11 a.m. Wednesday morning throughout Israel announces the beginning of the Home Front Command's emergency preparedness drill.

Residents are to go to the nearest shelter when the alarm is sounded and remain there for ten minutes. Hundreds of deaf citizens in the center of the country will also receive page warnings to special beepers to notify them of the sounding of the emergency siren, Channel 2 has reported.

In the event of a real emergency, a second siren will be sounded immediately after the first alarm.

Col. Chilik Soffer, head of the Population Department in the Home Front Command said regarding the drill that "every country in the world trains for emergency scenarios like earthquakes and fires. Here in Israel we train for those, as well as for enemy attacks."

Soffer added that state had an arrangement with hundreds of hotels across the country to host people evacuated from their homes due to a threat.

"We have 200,000 rooms in hotels and youth hostels all over the country for people who want to leave their homes, but have no alternative arrangements or family members they can stay with. We are also working on arrangements with local authorities to make up a list of families who are willing to take in people who were evacuated in their homes," said Soffer.

"We saw that this happened naturally during the 2006 Second Lebanon War and aim to have it better regulated through the Home Front Command," he said.
