EMB assumes the US and Europe will likely opt for locally developed airplanes, and Russia and China present all kinds of political and legal issues, including ITAR compliance for US technology on the KC-390.

Dat is een fikse markt. Maar de concurrentie is ook stevig. Met de:
EU: A400M
US: C130J
India: HAL/IL-214
China: Shaanxi Y-9
Japan: Kawasaki C2
Russia: Tupolev Tu-330
Ukraine: AN-70
Ukraine: AN-122

Embraer's big bet on its largest airplane yet

Introduction

Embraer is days away from the roll-out of its biggest airplane project yet and one that has the potential to make its biggest inroads yet into the global defense market: the KC-390.

The airplane, with a fuselage cross-section the size of the Boeing 767, challenges the Lockheed Martin C-130, a venerable aircraft that has been updated throughout the decades since it first entered service in 1956. Despite this modernization, Embraer believes the time has come for a modern design and a multi-mission capability that far surpasses that of the C-130, with higher productivity of a jet aircraft vs a four-engine turbo-prop.

Summary

Embraer sees a market for 728 KC-390s in 77 countries, excluding the US, Russia, China and Europe.
The KC-390 is half the price of the Airbus A400M and about the size of the Lockheed Martin C-130.
Launched with paid development and an order for 28 aircraft from Brazil to fulfill the country's unique requirements.
Typical mission capabilities will be: Cargo 7 pallets, Displacement of 80 soldiers, air dropping of 86 paratroopers, transporting 1 Black Hawk helicopter or one LAV25 or 3 Humvees, Rescue missions, Air tanking of 2 aircraft or helicopters.
The KC-390 flies at M0.8 and will therefore finish missions in two thirds the time of the C-130 Hercules (which flies as M0.5). This will also result in more missions flown per day i.e. more airlift capacity.

Market positioning

The Embraer KC-390 is the largest airplane developed by what has become the world's number three airplane marker, after Boeing and Airbus. The South American company is best known today for its E-Jets and corporate jets, but has been active in the defense market since its inception in 1969 with a variety of training, single-engine support airplanes, derivatives of its commercial Embraer Regional Jets (ERJs) into surveillance aircraft and ground attack aircraft (Alenia / Embraer AMX).

The KC-390 is an entirely new design, with new structures and a manufacturing process that expands Embraer's overall knowledge basis that eventually could be applied toward its entire enterprise.

Alexandre De Pol Fernandes, Program manager KC-390, told Leeham News and Comment (LNC) that the airplane, which was contracted with an order for 28 in 2009, will replace aging C-130s and the de Havilland DHC-5 Buffalo. The Brazilian government is underwriting the development. Brazil, which by land mass is the fifth largest country in the world (after Russia, Canada, the US and China), and the fifth largest by population (China, India, US, Indonesia). The vast distances and demographics of the population result in a need for air transport for humanitarian needs, infrastructure, search-and-rescue as well as military. The C-130 is aging and needs to be replaced. The government plans to do so with the KC-390 on a one-for-one basis. The productivity and reliability of the new airplane compared with the C-130 is self-evident. A KC-390 can fly a typical Brazilian mission of 1,540nm (Rio de Janiero to Manaus) with a common 18 tonne payload in 3:35 hrs; the slower C-130 takes six hours.

The drawing shows the KC-390 compared to the larger Airbus A400M and the equal size Super Hercules (C-130J-30):

KC-390 has virtually the same payload capability as the C-130. The flat cargo bay area is shorter than the Super Hercules but this is compensated by a ramp area which is considerably longer (5.8m versus 3.1m) and at shallower angle. The KC-390 can carry seven pallets or 80 troops, or 66 paratroopers, or 74 litters plus attendants and medical support equipment, or three Humvees, or one Blackhawk chopper or one LAV25 combat vehicle.

While the number of planes ordered by Brazil is 28, small by commonly thought of Western standards (the USAF plans to buy 179 Boeing KC-46A tankers),  Fernandes points out that the Brazilian Air Force overall is small. A single US aircraft carrier carries more fighters than the Brazilian AF has. Still, there are an additional 32 KC-390s ordered by Chile, Portugal and others. Embraer sees a potential global demand of 728 airplanes from 77 countries, excluding the US, Europe, Russia and China. EMB assumes the US and Europe will likely opt for locally developed airplanes, and Russia and China present all kinds of political and legal issues, including ITAR compliance for US technology on the KC-390.

Technology

The aircraft is built in aluminum in a high wing two-engine layout, using the IAE V2500-E5 turbofan at 29.000 lbf thrust, originally developed for Airbus A320. Landing gear is designed to operate from gravel air strips.

Embraer has used its considerable knowledge of digital Fly-By-Wire (FBW) to give an aircraft a very modern and easy to operate control system. This in turn give the pilots a low workload for basic flying. This is essential so that they can then concentrate on the difficult missions the aircraft is designed for. Embraer has done all control laws with normal flying mode which contains protection from stall, over-speed etc. EMB has also designed all the autopilot modes. All flight law software is programmed by Embraer's FBW development team.

We tested the KC-390 in the company's flight control law simulator which was similar to the cockpit mock-up pictured below. The difference to this mock-up was that the simulator had outside synthetic vision, real Rockwell Collins Pro Line Fusion displays and functional flight controls. The difference to a full flight simulator was the missing Head-Up-Displays (HUDs) and there was no motion system moving the cockpit to simulate g-forces.

We tested normal take off and landing and then performed a take off where one engine went inoperative after lift-off. With one engine climb established, we completed the circuit and landed on one engine. Flight laws are similar to the Airbus FBW but with two distinctions: throttles are back-driven and the side-sticks are electrically inter-connected, meaning a instructor can see on his side-stick and feel what the trainee is doing with his side-stick. The FBW goes in and trims out the yaw imbalance after the loss of an engine after a slight delay. The trim delay is deliberate so that the pilot is fully aware that he has lost an engine and which side is affected. It was easy to fly the KC-390 with all engines operative or when one engine was inoperative.

Reliability and maintainability

Embraer is designing the KC-390 to have a mission reliability of 95%. Service strategy is similar to the company's E-jets with A checks every 600FH or 12 months and C checks at 6000FH, 3000 Flight Cycles or 60 months, whichever comes first. A C check shall take 10 days to perform.

Boeing, Embraer sign MoU for KC-390 cooperation

By:  Zach Rosenberg Washington DC

Boeing and Embraer have announced an agreement to collaborate on marketing and developing technologies for the latter's KC-390 transport/tanker.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) calls for sharing "specific technical knowledge," but no details have yet been revealed. "We didn't really get into the specifics," says Boeing, "it's just a collaboration to share technology."

With Boeing's access to US and key foreign markets, the agreement includes exploring joint sales efforts.

"We don't have specific markets yet. What they're going to do is an analysis," says Boeing.

The agreement does not include a role for Boeing in preexisting contracts. Embraer has already booked a launch order for the KC-390 with the Brazilian air force, and has attracted additional commitments for the type, mostly within Latin America as well as from the Czech Republic and Portugal.

By collaborating on the KC-390, Boeing is able to deepen its relationship with the main supplier to the Brazilian air force.

Boeing is competing to sell the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet to the Brazilian air force, but faces rival bids from the Dassault Rafale and the Saab Gripen for a 36-aircraft order.

"This agreement is not linked to F-X2," says Boeing, referring to the fighter competition. "This agreement with Embraer will continue regardless of results."

The MoU on the KC-390 comes two months after Boeing and Embraer agreed to broadly explore areas of collaboration in safety and technology.

The KC-390 is scheduled to fly in 2014, with deliveries beginning in 2016. The aircraft is widely seen as competition for Boeing arch-rival Lockheed Martin, which manufactures the similarly-sized C-130J.

BRAZIL AND PORTUGAL SIGN DEFENSE PARTNERSHIP FOR KC-390 PROGRAM

Portuguese companies will supply structural parts for the military airlifter and aerial refueling jet developed by Embraer Defense and Security

São Paulo, Brazil, December 14, 2011 – Embraer Defense and Security signed a partnership contract with OGMA – Indústria Aeronáutica de Portugal and EEA – Empresa de Engenharia Aeronáutica, today, for the KC-390 military airlifter and aerial refueling jet program. According to this agreement, Portugal, through EEA, will develop the engineering project for the KC-390's components, which will be manufactured by Embraer subsidiary OGMA.

"Portugal's participation in the KC-390 program strengthens our position in the European defense market," said Luiz Carlos Aguiar, President of Embraer Defense and Security.

A Declaration of Intent between the Brazilian and Portuguese Ministries of Defense, signed in September 2010, preceded this contract, which emphasizes Portugal's commitment to purchasing KC-390 airplanes.

"The agreement provides an opportunity for boosting the capabilities of the military aviation cluster, so as to generate and develop technological competencies," said Jacinto Moniz de Bettencourt, EEA President.

"This is a unique opportunity for OGMA to develop its technological and manufacturing capabilities within a high aggregate value military program," said OGMA President Almir Borges.

Czech Republic outlines need for two KC-390s
By Craig Hoyle

Embraer's recent steady flow of teaming announcements on the KC-390 tanker/transport programme has continued apace, with the Czech Republic becoming the latest nation to signal its intention to participate in production of the twinjet.

Brazilian and Czech defence ministers Nelson Jobim and Alexandr Vondra on 13 September signed a declaration of intent linked to the project, opening the way for negotiations on possible Czech industrial involvement. The Czech air force could also acquire two KC-390s under the pact.

Czech firm Aero Vodochody could manufacture the Brazilian-designed aircraft's rear fuselage, doors and wing leading edges, the nation's defence ministry says.

"We are very pleased with the interest shown by the Czech government in participating in the KC-390 programme," says Orlando José Ferreira Neto, Embraer's executive vice-president, defence market. Co-operation on the military transport "can be the beginning of a solid, long-term relationship", he believes.

Vondra agrees, noting: "We see a promising co-operation in the modernisation of older equipment."

Embraer's latest sign of support for the KC-390 came during what was the first senior-level meeting to have taken place between the Brazilian and Czech defence ministries. The nations also agreed to pursue co-operation in the training of army personnel, with Czech soldiers to visit Brazil for jungle training.

The first prototype KC-390 should be ready in late 2014 or 2015, with the transport to have a maximum cargo capacity of around 19t.

Support for the programme now stands at five nations, including Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Portugal, and its potential orderbook is 54 aircraft.

The Czech air force's current transport inventory comprises five Antonov An-26s and eight Let L-410s, as listed by Flightglobal's MiliCAS database. The service has also recently taken delivery of its first of four C-295s from Airbus Military.

Chile and Colombia to Become Partners in Embraer's KC-390 Programme

09:10 GMT, September 3, 2010 defpro.com | While US and European aerospace companies, including Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Airbus Military and Antonov, are intensely competing in the global tactical airlift market, an unexpected competitor has quietly positioned itself in the key players' backyard and, in the future, may be reaching out beyond its ancestral geographic and business environment. So far, Embraer's KC-390 tactical airlift programme has not made large waves in the international market. However, the South American company, which has already had significant international success with its Tucano and Super Tucano light attack and training aircraft, is now seeking to measure up to earlier achievements with a new heavyweight (when compared to the Tucanos).

Recent news about possible new partners and future customers has shown that the programme has a good chance to no longer remain confined to its continental borders. However, a long road still lies ahead of the KC-390 programme before it joins the international competition. The first flight of the airplane is scheduled for 2014, with entry into service with the Brazilian Air Force planned for the end of 2015.

Indeed, Embraer is very confident about the continuing progress of its military airlift programme. In May, Acir Padilha, Vice-President, Marketing and Sales at Embraer Defense Systems, told defpro.com: "The EMBRAER KC-390 sets a new standard in medium-lift military transport. With a twin turbofan engine and outstanding operational productivity, the KC-390 will have the lowest total life cycle cost and the highest availability in its class." (see http://www.defpro.com/daily/details/563/)

Embraer's growing number of partners for this programme – in addition to its key national partner, the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) – may prove Padilha right. After the FAB's announcement during the Farnborough air show in July to purchase 28 KC-390 aircraft, two new partners have recently been announced. In late August, the Brazilian and Chilean Defence Ministers signed a declaration of intent in Santiago de Chile in which Chile becomes a partner in the KC-390 programme and provides a basis for negotiations on the purchase of six aircraft. Furthermore, as DefenseNews reports, Brazil and Colombia signed a similar document on 1 September. In addition to the prospect of industrial participation, the Colombian Air Force (FAC) intends to purchase a fleet of twelve KC-390s.

Chile's industry may also benefit from participation in the programme. Based the bilateral agreement, Chile's National Aeronautical Enterprise (Empresa Nacional de Aeronáutica, ENAER) will be offered an opportunity to contribute to the development of the aircraft and to supply part of its structure. The two South American companies have collaborated in different aerospace programmes since the 1990s. Orlando José Ferreira Neto, Embraer Executive Vice President, Defence Market, said on the occasion of the signing ceremony: "We have an excellent relationship with ENAER and we hope to see it grow even more via this partnership that not only reveals the high regard of the Chilean government for the KC-390, which we consider to be a winning product, but also shows our mutual interest in integrating the defence industrial bases of both countries." ENAER's CEO, General Pedro Bascuñan stated: "Participating in the project brings benefits not only to Embraer and ENAER, but also to both nations, by generating jobs and boosting industrial development. The possibility of working together on the KC-390 program comes as an important alternative for stimulating the manufacturing of aeronautical structures in our facilities."

Earlier this week, Chile was joined by Colombia as the second international partner in Brazil's ambitious military airlift programme. According to DefenseNews, Air Marshal Flavio Ulloa, the FAC chief of logistical operations, said during the signing ceremony that by "being part of the programme, we are taking big steps to significantly speed up the development of the country's aeronautics industry through the Colombian Aeronautics Industry Corporation." The Colombian Air Force already operates the Tucano, Super Tucano and EMB 110 Bandeirante aircraft. The news of Embraer's latest international partnership was also noticed on the stock market with company shares rising 6.1% on Wednesday.
