eneral Atomics has unveiled a new concept for how its MQ-9B SkyGuardian drone might be employed in the future, as a launch platform for U.S.-Norwegian Joint Strike Missile cruise missiles. Utilizing MQ-9-series uncrewed aircraft as weapon trucks loaded with stand-off munitions could be one way to help ensure their relevance in future high-end conflicts.

An artist's conception of an MQ-9B in Royal Australian Air Force markings and armed with a pair of Joint Strike Missiles (JSM) under each wing is currently on display at the Avalon airshow in Australia, which wraps up this week. The MQ-9B is an evolution of the MQ-9 Reaper that has greater range, endurance, and maximum payload capacity over its predecessor, among other improvements.

"That configuration is somewhat notional and meant to inspire a conversation about the possibilities for future use of the aircraft," C. Mark Brinkley, a spokesman for General Atomics, told The War Zone. The MQ-9B in the company artwork also shows maritime search radar installed under the drone's rare fuselage and two Sledgehammer electronic warfare pods under its wings. The pods could be used to launch electronic attacks on enemy forces or for self-protection, as well as for gathering electronic intelligence.

Though the configuration and stores loadout is notional, "GA-ASI has conducted an internal feasibility study regarding integration of the JSM onto our MQ-9B platform, and found the weapon meets those requirements," he added. "Integrating weapons and other payloads onto our platforms is something we take pride in and we have a great track record in that regard, from Hellfire missiles to JDAMs and more."

GA-ASI Flies New Multi-Use NATO Pod on MQ-9   ( misschien ook nog wel interessant voor NL )

NATO Pod Development Brings Together International Partners to Meet Future Requirements

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) flew the new NATO Pod for the first time on Nov. 23, 2022. The NATO Pod is a joint development between GA-ASI and Sener Aeroespacial of Spain. The NATO Pod is built by Sener Aeroespacial in Europe to meet NATO airworthiness standards, while increasing configuration and payload options for MQ-9A and MQ-9B Remotely Piloted Aircraft produced by GA-ASI. The new product is designed for international customers that are interested in rapidly integrating sovereign payload capabilities to achieve specific mission objectives.

The test flight was performed at the Yuma Proving Grounds using a GA-ASI owned MQ-9A aircraft.

NATO Pod development was driven by GA-ASI's desire to provide customers with a customizable, multi-use pod for carriage of sovereign, cross-domain Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) sensors for MQ-9A and MQ-9B RPA systems. GA-ASI is working with Sener and other European suppliers to integrate their sensor capabilities within this new pod. The NATO Pod is a flexible, scalable, certifiable enclosure with the structural features to host wide-ranging mission systems. The pod meets DEF STAN and STANAG certification standards for airworthiness, including lightning protection and bird impact.

The NATO Pod interfaces with common MQ-9 aircraft power and navigation interfaces, including the platform datalink connection to the Ground Control Station (GCS). Customer system integration is based on using a common set of interfaces to the aircraft and GCS systems.

?This is a truly momentous product design and implementation effort,? said GA-ASI Vice President of Mission Payloads and Exploitation, Satish Krishnan. ?We?ve worked closely with Sener to meet requirements and keep our combined teams in sync to achieve this great outcome. Our successful test flight allows us to begin marketing this new capability to our international partner nations as a way to rapidly add sovereign payload capability.?

Rafael Orbe, Defence General Director at Sener Aeroespacial, said: ?This first flight is the fruit of a long collaboration between GA-ASI and Sener and we are proud to have contributed to the success of the project. We look forward to continuing the good work together, which we are sure will bring us more successes in the future.?

This industrial cooperation effort introduces European manufacturing of GA-ASI designed mission hardware and opens the door to customer-specified mission payloads ? including technologies that are built outside the U.S. ? for deployment on MQ-9A and MQ-9B. The NATO Pod that was tested featured a payload built by Arp?ge S.A.S. France.

MQ-9As are operated by a number of European countries, including the United Kingdom, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain. GA-ASI?s newer MQ-9B variant has been acquired by the UK and Belgium. Recently Poland announced that it will lease MQ-9A.

Reaper is ongetwijfeld goed, maar moeten we niet alvast gaan denken aan "loyal wingman" drones? We liggen al achter op bewapende drones (dat volop word gebruikt in oorlogen) en gaan ook niet echt voorop met "loyal wingman" -achtig wat mij de toekomst lijkt.

First things first. Het personeel moet eerst leren omgaan met een RPA. 306 Squadron moet alles hebben afgevinkt om het systeem volledig te kunnen beheersen.

Een loyal wingman zal t.z.t. komen, maar het heeft geen zin om de boel te gaan overhaasten.

MQ-9 Reaper langer op Cura?ao

Het onbemande verkenningsvliegtuig MQ-9 Reaper blijft tot 1 juli volgend jaar inzetbaar vanaf vliegveld Hato op Cura?ao. Dit gebeurt om het  luchtmachtpersoneel voor te bereiden op zwaardere taken en grote operaties. Staatssecretaris Christophe van der Maat liet dat vandaag weten tijdens zijn bezoek aan het Caribisch gebied.



3 van de 4 aangekochte toestellen staan sinds begin dit jaar op Cura?ao. Een 40-koppig detachement startte toen met de zogenoemde test- en evaluatiefase. Die loopt volgens planning medio december af. Daarna werkt het personeel verder aan de operationele gereedstelling.

De gunstige weersomstandigheden en beschikbaarheid van het luchtruim waren reden om het onbemande systeem op het eiland te beproeven. Bovendien verzamelt het toestel al inlichtingen ter ondersteuning van de (militaire) organisaties in het Caribisch gebied.

Van der Maat: ?Mooi dat de MQ-9 Reaper 6 maanden langer is in te zetten om de Commandant Zeemacht Caribisch gebied en de Kustwacht Caribisch gebied te ondersteunen. Ik heb ter plekke gehoord hoe belangrijk het toestel met zijn sensorcapaciteit hier is voor onder meer het bestrijden van de georganiseerde criminaliteit. De afgelopen periode hebben de luchtmacht-collega?s het onbemande vliegtuig uitvoerig getest. Het is goed dat zij de komende 6 maanden door kunnen gaan met trainen.?

Cockpits op de grond

Vliegbasis Leeuwarden ontvangt medio december het vierde toestel en 2 zogeheten Ground Control Stations. Die zijn vergelijkbaar met cockpits, maar dan op de grond. Het vliegtuig blijft voorlopig in de opslag. Beide cockpits worden volgend jaar naar verwachting wel operationeel. Dan zijn de toestellen boven het Caribisch gebied ook vanuit Leeuwarden te besturen. Het Friese veld biedt uiteindelijk onderdak aan al deze technologisch hoogwaardige systemen. Naast de huidige 4 betreft het nog zo?n aantal. Die zijn inmiddels besteld.

De MQ-9 Reaper verzamelt vanuit de lucht data en informatie. Dankzij de besturing per satelliet is het toestel wereldwijd te bedienen. Het systeem past volledig bij de wens van Defensie om te opereren op basis van informatie-gestuurd militair optreden.

Er komen nog wel meer bewapende drones, een zekerheid. Loyal Wingman concept leeft nog niet echt, maar is ook onontkoombaar dunkt me.

De vloot van MQ-9A's word met 4 stuks uitgebreid, waarmee het totaal op 8 reapers uit komt. De nieuwe (bewapende) reapers worden volgens de verwachting in 2026 afgeleverd.
De productielijn van de A variant sluit na deze bestelling en hierna zal er de MQ-9B aangekocht moeten worden als we nog meer toestellen willen kopen in de (nabije) toekomst.

Dit jaar nog komt er een extra A-brief voor de verwerving van SIGINT/ESM pods voor de MQ-9's. In 2023 volgen de A-brieven voor de verwerving van Maritime Surveillance pods & de bewapening van de MQ-9's.
