Wel mooi als het werkt want tegenwoordig hebben zelfs die Houthi rebellen in Jemen de beschikking over suicide drones...
Hezbollah heeft ze...en uiteindelijk ook Boko Haram, de Taliban, Al Qaida enz enz...drones gaan steeds meer een bedreiging
worden.

Dat is ook niet gek want ik heb wel het idee dat dit een ''wapen van de toekomst'' is en op termijn wel eens de taak kan overnemen van de luchtdoel artillerie zoals de PRTL. En wie weet ook wel (een deel van ) de SAM's.

Rheinmetall new laser weapon station successfully tested



Rheinmetall continues to make steady headway in the world of laser weapons, having recently completed a successful serious of comprehensive trials with a weapon station. In combination with a laser, the weapon station demonstrated its speed and precision in tests conducted in December 2018.

The weapon station can be armed with lasers in the 100 kW output power range. During the tests, which were conducted in Switzerland at the company's Ochsenboden test centre near Zürich, drones and mortar rounds were successfully engaged at operationally relevant ranges.

The laser weapon station is the latest stage and logical continuation of the process in which Rheinmetall has transformed laser weapon technology into a fully functional weapon system. It consists of four main components: the laser source, beam director with the telescope, and coarse tracker (weapon station).

The mobile weapon station performs the task of mechanically aiming the laser toward the target. Now that a weapon station specially designed to meet the requirements of a laser weapon station has been successfully realized, Rheinmetall has all of the principal assemblies for a future laser weapon system at its own disposal. The laser weapon station was combined with a beam director – successfully employed in multiple tests – and high-performance Rheinmetall lasers. It is also designed to be combined with a soon-to-be-available 20 kW laser source, likewise made by Rheinmetall.

Equally suitable for ground, air and naval operations, the assemblies are modular and scalable in design, and can be deployed regardless of the threat situation on military platforms of all types.

Among the laser weapon station's outstanding performance parameters are its extremely accurate mechanical aiming function, coupled with an unlimited, 360° traversing zone and an elevation range in excess of 270°. The system architecture (EN DIN 61508) is closely oriented to the MANTIS air defence system now in service with the Bundeswehr, and thus also offers interfaces for connecting it to higher-echelon air defence systems.

Dat hadden de Duitse Boxers ook wel, de upgrade zit 'm in de mogelijkheid om het RCWS vanaf een tweede positie te bedienen.

@Huzaar1 : Weet jij hoe het staat met de ontwikkeling van upgrade SP35 ?   Is dit nog in een verkennend stadium ? of staat deze upgrade alvast in de wacht tot 2025 ?

Dat had deze mijnheer echter niet mogen overkomen:

Combining Boris Johnson-like grasp of detail with the British tradition of making disastrous decisions over Balkan affairs, foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt has marked his first official visit to Slovenia by offending the country after he called it a former "vassal state" of the Soviet Union.

It was actually part of Yugoslavia, the communist country, which under Josip Tito jealously guarded its independence from the USSR – to the point of hosting the conference where the Non-Aligned Movement was created in 1961.

Seemingly oblivious to this, Mr Hunt stood beside Slovenian foreign minister Miro Cerar and declared himself "really happy to be here", before telling his Slovenian hosts: "As a fellow European country, the UK is very proud of the transformation there has been in Slovenia, a really remarkable transition from a Soviet vassal state to modern European democracy."

The Slovenians, inevitably, spotted the error and another attempt to win friends in the Brexit negotiations was blown off course, as Mr Hunt continued the gaffe-making of his predecessor in the role, Boris Johnson.

In a swiftly shared report, Milan Brglez, former president of the Slovenian parliament, was quoted as saying: "The British foreign minister comes to Slovenia asking us for a favour (to discuss with the foreign minister how to avoid a no-deal Brexit) while arrogantly insulting us. We were never a 'vassal state of the Soviet Union'."

Aankoopproces is gestopt op aandringen van de minister. Landmacht moet nieuwe studie doen naar behoefte.
