Als ik dat apparaat op die mortier zie van die  dragon waar er een pieper in de pijp wordt gegooid... moet toch wel een soort van afsluiter kunnen fixen aan de achterkant. Ziet er zo onhandig en onpraktisch uit.

The Sandcat will be equipped with an Accurate Mortar

Elbit Systems and Plasan join forces to propose a new version of the Sandcat 4x4 light-armored vehicle fitted with the SPEAR MK2

At ADEX 2016, reports Army Recognition, Elbit Systems and the defense vehicles manufacturer Plasan join forces to propose a new version of the Sandcat 4x4 light-armored vehicle fitted with the SPEAR MK2 on the rear of the vehicle.

Plasan's Sandcat is customized for both military and homeland security purposes, such as SWAT missions and counter-insurgency activity. It is based on an upgraded Ford F-Series 4x4 chassis, adapted by Oshkosh Corporation for military use and fitted with Plasan-designed and manufactured modular armor made of advanced Metal Composite & Ceramics Composite Kitted Hull structure.

Elbit Systems' SPEAR MK2 is a fully autonomous, vehicle-mounted 120mm soft recoil mortar system for high-mobility platforms. SPEAR MK2 delivers effective fire support by combining the flexibility and lethality of accurate mortar fire with exceptional tactical mobility. The mortar is a derivative of the combat-proven soft recoil mortar which is muzzle loaded and turntable-mounted and is being used extensively by the US Army, NATO, IDF and others.

The SPEAR MK2 is equipped with computerized aiming and navigation devices, enabling the mortar system to be operated autonomously and aimed without the need for external reference points. SPEAR MK2 can be integrated with a variety of battle management systems (BMS) and includes technical fire management, scheduled fire plans, a prioritization target process and an attack result forecast. The system also manages ammunition, personnel, assignments and serial number equipment reports.

The system can operate independently with forward observers and/or deployed forces. The system can also be deployed on a standalone basis or as part of the battery/platoon configuration.

Targeting information is relayed to the fire control system (FCS) which computes the ballistic data and orders the electric drive system (EDS) to position the mortar barrel to the exact azimuth and elevation. The mortar fire control system (MFCS) receives feedback from the north finding system (NFS) and inclination gauge units (IGU).

Royal Thai Army procure Elbit Soltam SPEAR 120mm mortar launcher mounted on 4×4 truck.

The Army of Thailand, it has made progress on some military equipment procurement.

Raytheon Precision Extended Range Munition (PERM) Tests Successful

Raytheon announced that four PERM rounds were successfully fired in testing, performing to requirements.

Raytheon announced today that the company successfully fired four Precision Extended Range Munition (PERM) 120mm guided projectiles during testing at Yuma Proving Ground. Three of the GPS-guided rounds reached the required range and hit within the required distance of their targets, according to a company release. One round was fired to the minimum range requirement, striking just a few meters from an off-axis target.

The four rounds, fired from the U.S. Marine Corps M327 120mm rifled towed mortar – also known as the Expeditionary Fire Support System (EFSS) – met all test objectives, according to Raytheon.

Marines from Charlie Battery, 1st Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment, test the Expeditionary Fire Support System M327 120mm mortar at Pohakuloa Training Area. The PERM round is being developed to provide a precision fire capability for the system.

"These firings, combined with earlier environmental lab and integration tests, demonstrate PERM's maturity," said Dr. Tom Bussing, vice president of Raytheon's Advanced Missile Systems. "The testing also shows the high level of integration between the munition's guidance, navigation and control functions."

The EFSS is a mobile, quick response indirect fire system usually towed behind an Internally Transportable Vehicle. A precision munition for the rifled mortar was a key capability sought by the Marine Corps. PERM is designed to provide Marines with a lethal, extended range, high probability one-shot capability. Raytheon and Israeli Military Industries jointly developed the munition, and expect to deliver 42 PERM rounds for additional testing later this year.

Raytheon Test-Fires New GPS-Guided Mortar for Marines

Raytheon recently test-fired a new GPS-guided 120mm mortar round at Yuma Proving Grounds, Ariz., demonstrating a precision-firing technology designed to help Marine Corps commanders in combat.

The Marine Corps program, called Precision Extended Range Mortar, or PERM, is aimed at developing and fielding precision-guided mortar rounds able to better pinpoint targets compared to existing mortar rounds.

The rounds are configured with a GPS antenna and an inertial measurement unit, or IMU, which tells the round how it is flying, said Raytheon program manager Ty Blanchard.

In a recent test-firing, three rounds landed within 10 meters or less of the desired target, Blanchard explained.
"Three of the GPS-guided rounds flew to the required range and hit within the required distance of their targets. One round was fired to the minimum range requirement and impacted just a few meters from an off-axis target," Blanchard added.

The rounds were fired from a Marine Corps M327 120mm Rifled Towed Mortar. Raytheon and Israeli Military Industries are jointly developing PERM.

The idea with PERM rounds is to give a combat commander the ability to destroy an enemy target at longer ranges using fewer rounds. A typical mortar round travels about seven to eight kilometers. the PERM rounds can reach distances up to 16 kilometers, Blanchard added.

"It has an extended range so you don't need as many mortar systems to cover a specific area. Also, it requires less personnel and fewer rounds. You don't need to fire as many rounds to hit a target so that reduces your logistics train. The second and third order effects are massive," Blanchard explained. "You can do a  lot more pre-mission planning. There are a litany of advantages which give the commander so much more flexibility.

PERM rounds are engineered with small fins called canards designed to increase glide and extend the range of the weapon.

"We get lift from the canards so we are able to glide and reach longer ranges. We developed this round with Marine Corps funding and we will deliver 42 rounds to the Marine Corps next month," Blanchard said.

The Marine Corps plans an upcoming shoot-off of GPS-guided mortar rounds between Raytheon and ATK, Blanchard said. The winning vendor will be awarded a procurement contract to deliver rounds to the Corps.

In the future, Raytheon plans to add semi-active laser guidance to its PERM round in order to increase the options provided to commanders.
While PERM is primarily being developed for the Marine Corps, the round is able to fire from an Army smooth-bore mortar tube as well as from a Corps rifle tube, Blanchard added.
