Laten we dit even afwachten en aanzien ;). Er kan vast nog protest worden aangetekend tegen dit besluit. En met Trump in het Witte Huis kun je van alles in deze verwachten.

US Army selects Sig Sauer for new XM17 Modular Handgun System

Daniel Wasserbly, Washington, DC - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly - 20 January 2017

Sig Sauer has been awarded the long-running XM17 Modular Handgun System (MHS) contract for replacing legacy 9 mm M9 Beretta pistols, the US Army announced on 19 January.

It is understood that Sig Sauer bested bids from Beretta, FN Herstal, and Glock, after Smith & Wesson and partner General Dynamics Ordnance Tactical Systems (GDOTS) had earlier been dropped from the programme. A total of nine bids were submitted, according to a separate Pentagon statement.

The army said Sig Sauer "will provide handguns, accessories, and ammunition under a contract" with a USD580.217 million maximum ceiling.

"Following a thorough operational test, fielding of the modular handgun is expected to begin in 2017," according to the army.

Germany's special forces are seeking new assault rifles, with the German defence procurement office issuing a tender for their purchase.

According to the tender issued by the BAAINBw, Germany is interesting in purchasing 1,750 rifles in total.

The new rifle is expected to replace the G36 rifles currently used by the army's Kommando Spezialkräfte (KSK) and the navy's Kommando Spezialkräfte Marine (KSM) units.

The deadline for submitting offers is the 9 February, with delivery to start on 10 September and be completed by 28 June 2019. The estimated value of the contract is EUR11 million (USD11.6 million).

According to the tender requirements the future German's special forces assault rifle is to be a gas-operated firearm chambered in the 5.56x45 mm NATO, and capable of single and automatic fire.

The weapon is to be equipped with a STANAG 4694 NATO Accessory Rail (NAR) on the top of a receiver, other NARs located on a handguard, and a suppressor.

The weapon length without a suppressor is to be less than 900 mm, with a maximum weight set to 3.8 kg (without magazine, ammunition, and optics). The barrel life is requested to be at least 10,000 rounds, while receiver life is to be 30,000 rounds or more. The rifle is requested to be feature dual controls for right- and left-handed users.

The contract also includes the delivery of a laser designator and illuminator, flashlight, and carrying equipment.

The 1,750 rifles to be bought include five models for bid comparison (delivered before a contract is to be signed), 40 for qualification tests and compatibility checks with optical sights, and 1,705 serially produced weapons.

Turkish Army receives first 500 MPT-76 rifles

Turkey's state-owned Machines and Chemical Industries Board (MKEK) delivered on 11 January the first 500 serially-produced MPT-76 battle rifles to the Turkish Land Forces Command (TLFC).

The rifles delivered on 11 January are the first batch from a 2015 deal which will see the production of around 35,000 MPT-76s for the TLFC, Naval Forces Command, and the Gendarmerie General Command. 20,000 of these are being manufactured by MKEK, with the remaining 15,000 being produced by privately owned KaleKalip, which co-designed the weapon.

Speaking during a ceremony held for the event, Turkish Defence Minister Fikri Isik said the locally developed rifles will be used in all conditions. Noting that Turkey's dependency on foreign defence technologies has now fallen from 80% 15 years ago to 40% today, Isik added, "Our aim is to decrease that ratio [to] below 20%."

Land Forces Commander General Salih Zeki Colak said during the ceremony that the rifles will be a force multiplier for the army.

The MPT-76 was designed to meet the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) requirement for a new infantry rifle chambered in the NATO 7.62x51 mm cartridge. The MPT-76 rifle will replace about 200,000 G3 rifles made in Turkey under licence from Heckler & Koch. The TSK has a potential requirement for as many as 500,000 MPT-76s, principally for the Turkish Army but also to equip personnel across its other service arms.

MKEK will complete delivery of the remaining 19,500 MPT-76s from the country's first serial order for the rifle by the end of 2017, Isik said on 30 December 2016.

Rheinmetall and Steyr Mannlicher unveil RS556 assault rifle

Remigiusz Wilk, Warsaw - IHS Jane's International Defence Review - 05 January 2017

Rheinmetall and Steyr Mannlicher have partnered to offer the RS556 assault rifle in 5.56 x 45 mm to the Bundeswehr as a potential replacement for the service's G36 standard issue rifle.

The RS556 (RS stands for Rheinmetall Steyr in 5.56 mm calibre) is a derivative of the AR-15 and a variant of Steyr's STM556 rifle, which was announced in 2012 and manufactured since May 2016.

The RS556 uses a short-stroke gas piston system, driving an operating rod to force the bolt carrier to the rear, and is locked by a rotating bolt.
The upper and lower receivers are made from aluminum, strengthened with steel bolt carrier guides to prevent the bolt tilting. The fire selector, magazine catch, and bolt catch are located on both sides of the weapon to support right and left handed shooters. The RS556 is equipped with a seven-position telescopic polymer butt-stock.

The rifle will be offered in a variety of barrel lengths, with the standard issue featuring a 406 mm barrel. (Steyr Mannlicher)

The rifle features a cold-hammered, chrome-lined quick-change barrel, which can be exchanged without tools by the shooter in just a few seconds - a design based on the Steyr AUG bullpup rifle. The barrel and all steel parts are Mannox coated.

A four-position gas regulator is featured with settings for normal use, heavy use, suppressor, and gas off.

The RS556 will be offered with a variety of barrel lengths from 293 mm and 330 mm (personal defence weapon); 370 mm (carbine); 406 mm and 455 mm (rifle); and 505 mm and 550 mm (designated marksman). Other barrel lengths can also be implemented.

It is planned to offer the RS556 in other calibres, such as 7.62x35 mm (300 BLK), .300 Whisper, and 7.62x39 mm, and with a "heavy duty" barrel for use with hard core ammunition.

The RS556 features a modular upper receiver with NATO Accessory Rails (NARs) in the 12 and six hour positions, and optional accessory rails that can be located on the handguard sides.
