USAFE completes CJADC2 demonstration

Release Number: 010321
Published March 01, 2021

A Royal Netherlands Air Force F-35 Lightning II performs a low pass flyby during a Combined Joint All Domain Command and Control demonstration at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, Feb 25, 2021. U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa conducted a CJADC2 demonstration to highlight the joint and combined force's ability to converge assets proving the concepts of integration network solutions to connect as many sensors as possible to a common operating network to present warfighters with an information advantage across all war fighting domains. (U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt. Nicholas Byers)

U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa, in conjunction with the Department of the Air Force's Chief Architect's Office, conducted a Combined, Joint All-Domain Command and Control demonstration this past week in international waters and airspace in and around the Baltic Sea. Participation included assets from U.S. Naval Forces Europe – Africa/U.S. 6th Fleet, U.S. Army Europe – Africa, U.S. Strategic Command, the Royal Air Force, the Royal Netherlands Air Force and the Polish Air Force.

This demonstration was designed to test and observe the ability of the joint force, our allies and partners to integrate and provide command and control across multiple networks to multiple force capabilities.

"Conducting a complex and real-world focused CJADC2 demonstration allowed our joint and allied team to find areas where we can innovate with systems we already have and also to identify areas where our warfighters need assistance from the Air and Space Forces' Chief Architect's Office," said Gen. Jeff Harrigian, USAFE-AFAFRICA commander.

Combined forces participated in two separate mission threads during the CJADC2 demonstration. First, U.S. Air Force F-15C Eagles and F-15E Strike Eagles from the 48th Fighter Wing, Royal Air Force Lakenheath, United Kingdom, conducted a targeting scenario using Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile employment tactics over the Baltic Sea. The JASSM is a long-range, conventional, air-to-ground, precision standoff missile designed to destroy high-value, well-defended targets.

The U.S. and U.K. also provided Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance airborne assets to support the targeting and command and control of the demonstration. These assets were able to integrate targeting and sensor information with other Air Force entities, including the 603rd Air Operations Center and the Deployable Ground System, as well as joint assets from the U.S. Army and a U.S. Navy P-8 Poseidon. KC-135 Stratotankers from the 100th Air Refueling Wing, RAF Mildenhall, England, and a C-17 Globemaster III from U.S. Air Force Air Mobility Command also supported the demonstration.

U.S. Air Force and Royal Netherlands Air Force assets also participated in a mission thread involving the defense of Ramstein Air Base, Germany. This second demonstration occurred simultaneously with the targeting demonstration and tested the ability for the joint and combined force to sense and target unmanned aerial systems and cruise missile attacks against the base. Dutch F-35 Lightning IIs also participated in the demonstration as communication links between base defense arrays as well as the 10th Army Air Missile Defense Command.

U.S. Space Force also supported the demonstration with one Multiband Assessment of the Communication Environment from the 16th Space Control Squadron, Peterson-Schriever Garrison, Colorado. Other programs that supported the event include the Command and Control, Incident Management, and Emergency Response Application, Kessel Run – Air Force Life Cycle Management Center/Detachment 12, Hanscom Air Force Base, Massachusetts. Additionally, the 341st Missile Wing, Malmstrom Air Force Base, Montana contributed by exploring various communication methodologies and technologies in support of a common operating picture.

"A truly connected joint force can't happen without strong partnerships with our combatant commands and major commands in overseas theaters," said Mr. Preston Dunlap, the Air and Space Forces' Chief Architect. "Our methodology for these Department of the Air Force demonstrations is to take our technology to the warfighter and to iterate and innovate alongside them during these demonstration sprints. Future conflicts will be with technologically advanced adversaries--and will be contested--so a distributed but integrated system of command and control is critical if we're to compete and win. Partnering with USAFE and our allies during this CJADC2 event was extremely productive and helped us push the ball down the field on digitally connecting the combined joint team."

In an era of great power competition and in line with the National Defense Strategy, this CJADC2 event demonstrated the joint and combined force's ability to converge assets from all domains and across NATO allies into the Baltic Sea. This will generate firepower inside an area that an adversary believes to be protected through anti-access, area denial technology, while also supporting the resiliency and defense of a key power projection base. U.S. and allied military exercises in the Baltic Sea enhance regional stability, combined readiness, and capability with our NATO allies and partners.

"Overall, I'm impressed with our warfighters' ability to command and control a complex targeting process as well as a base air defense scenario," Harrigian said, "but there are areas where we can continue to improve and where technology can help us streamline our network systems to ensure all of our disparate networks can communicate and ease the workload on our Airmen."

USAFE-AFAFRICA, alongside European joint and allied partners, will continue conducting CJADC2 events to integrate technology—including target recognition and joint force integration network solutions—to connect as many sensors as possible to a common operating network, presenting warfighters with an information advantage across all warfighting domains.

For more information on this event please call USAFE-AFAFRICA Public Affairs at +49 (0) 6371-47-6558 or e-mail usafepao.pao@us.af.mil. If after duty hours, please call +49 (0) 1624-25-5428 or e-mail usafepa.pastaffdutyofficer@us.af.mil.

NATO conducts Patriot missile life fires in Crete

New tactics, techniques and procedures were in the focus of this year's major Live Firing exercise of the Alliance's Air and Missile Defense (AMD) forces, Ryan Chan reports on his Twitter account. In addition to range and combat-effectiveness, network centric capabilities characterise modern AMD forces. Therefore, technical innovation and the consistent orientation to dynamic mission requirements are both task and necessity.

In a sealift operation, approximately 250 vehicles and more than 500 participating soldiers deployed to the Greek island of Crete. They established a multinational AMD Task Force to execute the central phase of this year's high-profile exercise at the NATO firing range. While U.S. elements from 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command and Royal Netherlands Air Force AMD troops joined the German Air Force on their three Patriot systems, the Hellenic Air Force had deployed two of their Patriot squadrons and an operations centre.

For the first time, command and control of the German-led live firing exercise was provided by the Surface to Air Missile Operation Centre of Germany's AMD Wing 1 via secure datalink from its home base in Husum, Germany. Implementing robust reach-back procedures over a distance of 2,500 kms significantly contributed to the best possible use, expansion and effectiveness of the full range of performance of the AMD forces.

The exercise is also part of Germany's AMD force certification for its future leading role in the NATO Response Forces, Ryan Chan concludes. "The acquired knowledge and skills are of high importance for our current and upcoming role as part within the NATO Response Force and the Very High Readiness Joint Task Force," said Colonel Andreas Noeske, Commander AMD Wing 1 and of the multinational AMD Task Force on Crete.

German and Dutch armored units train before NATO deployment in Lithuania

Two demanding weeks of training in the Munster target practice center lie behind the German and Dutch soldiers of the 414 Tank Battalion in view of their deployment in Lithuania in 2021 with NATO troops of the Enhanced Forward Presence mission.

Every two years a combat company of a German tank battalion has to go through a training course in the target practice center. The aim of this company training is to challenge officers and non-commissioned officers as military leaders under all possible aspects of a battle. This includes physical stress and psychological pressure.

For the German soldiers of the 3rd Company and the Dutch soldiers of the 4th Company of the 414 Tank Battalion, this training is the targeted preparation for the Enhanced Forward Presence (EFPE) deployment in Lithuania from the second half of 2021. In two intensive weeks of training, both companies alternately practice attack and delay. Delay is the focus of the training. The point is to give up space, to wear out the opponent in order to gain time for a later counterattack.

A training and exercise session in the shooting practice center includes the interaction of tank troops, tank grenadiers and combat supporters such as logisticians, engineers and paramedics because without diesel supply there would be no tank engine working, without pioneers it would not be possible to cross a river, and without paramedics the wounded would not be cared for. The cooperation of all skill profiles requires the company commanders to know exactly the respective combat and procedures of all units involved, to consider requirements and to be able to use them purposefully. In the current training project, the two tank companies are reinforced with grenadiers from the 92nd Panzergrenadier Training Battalion and the 44th Dutch Panzer Infantry Battalion. The 10th EFPE enhanced forward presence rotation will also be contested in this composition. This also creates trust among each other in the course of the training.

Bombers, Marine F-35s join Point Blank 20-4 exercise

By 1st Lt. Marie Chealthia Ortiz, 48th Fighter Wing Public Affairs / Published September 11, 2020

RAF LAKENHEATH, United Kingdom (AFNS) --
More than 50 aircraft from the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Marine Corps, the Royal Air Force and the Royal Netherlands Air Force participated in exercise Point Blank 20-04 over the North Sea, Sep. 10.

A high-end fight focused on fourth and fifth-generation defensive counter air integration, this exercise saw the return of U.S. Air Force F-15s and KC-135s, RNLAF F-16s, RAF and RNLAF F-35s, RAF Typhoons, and a RAF Voyager.

"Flying alongside fellow NATO nations over and around the United Kingdom in a complex war-fighting scenario involving over 50 aircraft is exactly the sort of training that keeps our Royal Air Force sharp and ready to operate alongside our allies whenever and wherever the call comes," said James Heappey, U.K. minister for Armed Forces.

The exercise also included first-time participation of U.S. Air Force Global Strike Command B-52 Stratofortress operating out of RAF Fairford, F-16s from the 510th and 555th Fighter Squadrons from Aviano Air Base, Italy, and U.S. Marine Corps F-35s from Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 211.

"For the 31st Fighter Wing, this is an excellent opportunity to participate in a large force exercise within USAFE (United States Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa); allowing our warfighters the opportunity to practice fighting a near-peer adversary," said Maj. John Hamilton, 555th Fighter Squadron. "It allows us to train alongside some of our NATO partners and boost our interoperability with a variety of airframes."

Point Blank is a large force exercise designed to sharpen combat readiness and increase tactical proficiency of the U.S., Ministry of Defence and other NATO forces.

"Our Typhoons acted as the aggressors against the fifth-generation F-35s from the RAF, U.S. Marine Corps and Royal Netherlands Air Force, simulating the tactics and threats of our adversaries whilst challenging their colleagues in a series of complex air-to-air battles that tested the skills of the pilots involved, and pushed these world-class aircraft to their limits," said Group Captain Chris Layden, RAF Lossiemouth station commander.

Multilateral exercises like this increase interoperability, deter potential adversaries and ensure the skies within the European theater remain sovereign.

"Exercises like Point Blank allow us to validate digital interoperability with Squadron 617 and is an opportunity to conduct realistic, relevant training with the United States Air Force, and NATO's allies, expanding our global influence by developing capabilities that can share the burden in addressing common defense challenges," said Lt. Col. Joseph F. Freshour, Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 211 commanding officer.

Royal Netherlands Air Force spokesperson, Maj. Marleen Molema, added, "We value the excellent opportunity Point Blank provides us to maintain and improve interoperability with our NATO allies."

Point Blank is a recurring, low-cost exercise initiative designed to increase tactical proficiency and demonstrate the collective commitment to regional security.

"The 48th Fighter Wing and our U.K. allies continue to lead the way with each iteration of Point Blank. Through our continued partnership, we are demonstrating the ability of allies and partners to seamlessly operate with one another across all domains in challenging and demanding scenarios," said Gen. Jeff Harrigian, USAFE-AFAFRICA commander. "This ultimately makes us experts at what we do, which is deliver air superiority anywhere across the globe."
