Australia will choose it's nuclear submarines design in 2023

According to information published by the West Australian on July 15, 2022, the type of nuclear submarines Australia will acquire will be unveiled early next year said the Australian Minister of Defense, Richard Marles. The Royal Australian Navy could be interested in the British Astute-class submarines or the US' Virginia-class submarines.

In September 2021 Australia scraped its French contract of Barracuda-class submarines to sign a trilateral security pact called AUKUS with the United Kingdom and the United States.

AUKUS, also styled as Aukus, is a trilateral security pact between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, announced on 15 September 2021 for the Indo-Pacific region. Under the pact, the US and the UK will help Australia to acquire nuclear-powered submarines.

The pact also includes cooperation on advanced cyber, artificial intelligence and autonomy, quantum technologies, undersea capabilities, hypersonic and counter-hypersonic, electronic warfare, innovation and information sharing.

US Virginia-class submarines

The Virginia class, also known as the SSN-774 class, is a class of nuclear-powered cruise missile fast-attack submarines, in service in the United States Navy. Designed by General Dynamics's Electric Boat (EB) and Huntington Ingalls Industries, the Virginia-class is the United States Navy's latest submarine model, which incorporates the latest in stealth, intelligence gathering, and weapons systems technology.

They are designed to excel in anti-submarine warfare, anti-ship warfare, strike warfare, special operations, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, irregular warfare, and mine warfare. Fast-attack submarines project power ashore with special operations forces and Tomahawk cruise missiles in the prevention or preparation of regional crises.

The Virginia-class submarine has a length of 114.8 m, and a beam of 10.36 m. The submarine can reach a top speed of 28 miles per hour (45 km/h). She has a crew of 132 people including 15 officers and 117 enlisted.

British Astute-class submarines

The Astute class is the latest class of nuclear-powered fleet submarines (SSNs) in service with the Royal Navy. The boats are being constructed by BAE Systems Submarines at Barrow-in-Furness. Seven boats will be constructed: the first of class, Astute, was launched by Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, in 2007, commissioned in 2010, and declared fully operational in May 2014.

Audacious has provision for up to 38 weapons in six 21-inch (533 mm) torpedo tubes. The submarine is capable of firing Tomahawk Block IV land-attack missiles with a range of 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) and Spearfish heavyweight torpedoes.

Master Mack

First indigenous Taiwanese submarine to be launch in September

According to information published by CNA on July 12, 2022, the Taiwanese Indigenous Defense Submarine (IDS) is expected to be launched in September.

The Indigenous Defense Submarine (IDS) Program is a Taiwanese project to develop and construct a class of attack submarines domestically for the Republic of China Navy.

The first indigenous diesel-electric submarine is scheduled to start operations in 2025, and it will be followed by seven others. They will replace the four aging submarines the country received decades ago.

Taiwan has put an emphasis on the domestic development of a variety of weapons systems, from missiles to vehicles, to strengthen its defenses against China's increasing aggressiveness.

The external design appears to resemble Japan's Soryu– and Oyashio-class SSKs by having an X-form rudder. The boats will be assembled using Japanese construction techniques in Taiwan.

Reportedly, a version of the AN/BYG-1 submarine combat management system, used in US Navy nuclear submarines, is being offered to Taiwan. Also, some influence in design is thought to have come from Dutch submarines currently operated by Taiwan. The vessels are estimated to be in the 2,500-ton class and 70m in length.

The armament of the first Indigenous Defense Submarine will be MK-48 Mod 6 Advanced heavyweight torpedoes and UGM-84L sub-launched Harpoon Block II missiles.

Thysssenkrupp Marine Systems Acquires MV Werften

Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) is to take over the shipyard location of MV Werften in Wismar.

Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems press release

The employees were informed about this development at a meeting today by the insolvency administrator, Dr. Christoph Morgen, in the presence of the Minister of Economics Reinhard Meyer, CEO Oliver Burkhard and IG Metall district manager Daniel Friedrich. With this move, one of the most traditional shipbuilding locations in Germany once again has a long-term outlook.

With a view to the future, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems could produce submarines in Wismar during the course of 2024. The main impetus for this is an order for more submarines from the German government and the resulting investments in the upgrading of the shipyard. The extent of such a commitment by ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems depends on the scope of the contract award: more orders means more jobs. If production ramps up in the course of 2024, some 800 new employees could be hired by ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems. Moreover, if additional orders are received in the surface sector, this number could even increase to over 1,500 employees at the Wismar site.

[#TechTuesday] ⚓💡 Lithium-Ion technology: a game-changer for submarines propulsion.
During #UDT2022, Naval Group's experts introduced the development we achieved in the integration of LiOn batteries 🔋onboard submarines and the process that allowed us to move from a vision to a real and safe existing solution.

Today conventional submarines are looking for long range deployments. With such need to increase the dived autonomy, improving the useful range of available capacity of the batteries, the lithium technology appears as a solution in which Naval Group has fixed its interest.

For what operational benefits?
🔇reduced indiscretion rate (reduced charging time, less energy dissipation)
🌊greater optimisation of on-board energy, flexibility in operational use
⏩high speed available no matter the state of charge
⚙️simplified maintenance
📈ability to evolve

Even if Lithium-Ion battery (LIB) technology is strongly widespread in the civilian field, as far as submarines are concerned, Li-Ion is a new technology. 🔋 Indeed, if the potential of LIB is enormous, so it was the technical challenge of its integration onboard submarines.

1 ⚓ Consider an arrangement fully adapted to the submarine architecture from the early design stages.
Thanks to LIB flexibility for arrangement on board, Naval Group aims at adapting its LIB architecture to provide the best trade-off between energy and arrangement.

2 ⚓ Safety in the face of high-energy concentration and confined environment constraints.
🛡 Safety barriers are defined at each level of the battery. Should one barrier fails, another steps up immediately.
🛡 String design includes mechanical barrier to prevent the propagation of a possible thermal runaway & protect cells again high temperatures
🔋 A Battery Management Module integrated to each string in order to maintain the surveillance even in case of failure of the Master Module

3 ⚓ A series of tests carried out to qualify the cells in abusive conditions.
Safety has been successfully validated through incremental tests led during the system design process. In addition, to Safety tests, functional and environment tests have been performed.
