Brazilian Navy chief says new nuclear submarine will be delayed until late 2020s

Brazil's new modern nuclear submarine, which was initially expected to enter service as early as 2021, will now likely be delayed until the end of that decade, according to Admiral Eduardo Bacellar Leal Ferreira, commander of the Brazilian Navy.

The submarine should be ready "by the late 2020s", Adm Leal Ferreira said recently.

Brazil and France signed a deal for the Submarine Development Program (PROSUB) on December 2008, but a decade later, construction of the nuclear submarine, Álvaro Alberto (SN-10), has yet to commence. The schedule has been regularly modified, and at one point it was expected that construction would begin in 2015 and be completed by 2021.

Revised Dimensions for Turkish REIS-class Submarines

Public domain information seen by MONCh at the SAHA exhibition held in Istanbul in September indicates that the overall length of the REIS-class Type 214TN air independent propulsion (AIP) submarines under construction for Turkish Naval Forces (TFN) has been increased by 0.75m over previously released information. The length now apparently stands at 68.35m, with the other key dimensions being height of 13.1m excluding periscope masts, beam 6.3m and draught 6.8metres.

Of the six submarines to be built, three are already in hand at the Golcuk Naval Shipyard: the first, PIRIREIS, was laid down in October 2015 and is expected to be launched this year; the third boat, MURATREIS, was laid down in February. The vessels are expected to be commissioned into the TNF in 2021-2026, and will be the first AIP submarines in Turkish service, replacing four AY-class (Type 209/1200) diesel-electric powered boats. The REIS will feature the ISUS-90/72 combat management system, Mk48 Mod 6AT and DM2A4 heavyweight torpedoes, HARPOON Block I/II and IDAS missiles. The indigenously-developed AKYA heavyweight torpedo and ATMACA Block I/II missile systems are likely to be integrated in coming years.

Originally the class was to be called CERBE, but in 2014 significant design modifications were made to meet TNF requirements and to cater for some technical problems with the HDW design. The former commander of TNF, Adm. Bülent Bostanoglu, is on record as stating that Turkish engineers found five major design flaws and developed solutions for them. The resulting submarine, longer and heavier than CERBE, was renamed the REIS-class. The latest revision in the overall length makes the current submarines 2.05m longer than the original CERBE design. MONCh understands that surface displacement is around 1,850t and submerged displacement likely to be 2,040-2,050.

Russian Submarine Krasnodar Hides on Ocean Floor during Black Sea Drills

The Krasnodar diesel-electric submarine of project 636.3 was fully deenergized and lied on the seabed in the Black Sea during training, Black Sea fleet Spokesman Alexey Rulev said.

"During the exercise the submarine lied on the seabed at a depth of 20 meters from the surface. According to the mission, it remained fully without power for two hours, the crew ceased operations, and the duty service was carried out by a minimal number of the personnel," he said. The submarine trained lying on the seabed in the Black Sea, he added. "After the training the Krasnodar successfully surfaced and continued combat training events," Rulev said.

The lying on the seabed element is obligatory for the annual training cycle. Submariners train cohesion in the situation and psychologically prepare for it. "In a real situation it is possible that a submarine has to lie on the seabed to escape detection by the adversary," Rulev said. It can lie on the seabed for an overhaul in a complete blackout, for a surgery or in order to save power.

Project 636.3 submarines (Improved Kilo by NATO classification) are the third generation of diesel-electric submarines which are most noiseless in the world. They develop underwater speed of 20 knots, submerge to 300 meters and have the cruising capacity of 45 days. The crew comprises 52 men, the underwater displacement is close to four thousand tons. They carry Kalibr missiles to strike at surface (ZM-54 and ZM-541) and ground targets (cruise missiles ZM-14) and have new electronic equipment.

PT PAL Discussed the Contracts of 3 New Submarines for the Navy

JAKARTA, KOMPAS - PT PAL's capability will continue to be developed to become a submarine factory and maintenance center in the region. For this reason, additional budget is needed to improve PT PAL's capabilities. This was conveyed by the Head of Defense Ministry's Defense Facility Agency Agus Setiadji, Wednesday (12/09/2018). According to Agus, is currently being discussed with the construction of three new submarines with PT PAL. Agus acknowledged, PT PAL's capabilities needed to be improved after cooperating with Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME). South Koea, building three submarines. The third submarine according to the plan, was launched by President Joko Widodo in October 2018.

"We hope that in the future PT PAL will have the ability to build itself and maintain it, if possible, to meet the needs in the region." Agus said. Agus said that in relation to the budget, the state capital participation has been fulfilled by Rp 1.5 trillion. Actually, the total need to prepare submarine construction at PT PAL reaches Rp 2.5 trillion. "We are proposing IDR 1 trillion again." he said. When confirmed, PT PAL President Director Budiman Saleh said PT PAL was able to fulfill the Ministry of Defense's request. He acknowledged that there are still many submarine construction facilities and PT PAL capabilities that must be improved. "Type 209 submarine Örder is eagerly awaited because all this time investment in the construction of a submarine shipyard has been designated for the 209 specification for both new and maintenance,"

Budiman said, the construction of three new submarines would have variations in domestic component levels (TKDN). Clearly, the local components of these submarines will increase compared to the third submarine produced with DSME. Previously, Indonesian Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Siwi Sukma Adji said, related to the needs of the Navy, there would be 12 submarines, while for this year there would be only five submarines. According to Siwi, it will be held at PT PAL.

DSME to Launch ROK Navy's First 3000 tons KSS-III Submarine on Friday

http://www.navyrecognition.com/index.php/news/defence-news/2018/september-2018-navy-naval-defense-news/6487-dsme-to-launch-rok-navy-s-first-3000-tons-kss-iii-submarine-on-friday.html
