Ik hoop eigenlijk dat er geen enkele harpoon op het ASWF komt  Dat er 16 NSM of LRASM op missiles op komen dan ben ik het met je eens.

Vandaar ook het woordje "vervangers" in die zin.

Mijn voorkeur: LRASM of de combinatie NSM + TLAM

Het zijn 32 Sea Ceptor AAW, niet 24.

Navy of Japan begins conversion of JS Kaga to second aircraft carrier

According to information published by Frontier India on 6 April 2022, the Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force has begun the conversion of the second Izumo-class multipurpose destroyer into an aircraft carrier.

S Kaga (DDH-184) is a helicopter carrier with a planned future conversion into an aircraft carrier. Officially classified as a multi-purpose operation destroyer, she is the second ship in the Izumo class of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF).

The helicopter carrier has a length of 248 m, a beam of 38 m, a draught of 7.5 m, and a depth of 33.5 m. She has an empty displacement of 19,500t and 27,000t when fully loaded.

The JS Kaga can carry up to 28 aircraft, or 14 larger aircraft. However, only 7 anti-submarine warfare helicopters and 2 search and rescue helicopters are planned for the initial aircraft complement.

For other operations, 400 troops and 50 3.5-ton trucks (or equivalent equipment) can also be carried. The flight deck has five helicopter landing spots that allow simultaneous landings or take-offs. The JS Kaga is armed with two Phalanx CIWS (Close-In Weapon Systems) and two SeaRAM CIWS.

In December 2018, the conversion of the first Izumo-class JS Izumo was confirmed when Japan announced the change of its defense guidelines. Upon the completion of the process, Izumo will be the first Japanese naval vessel to operate fixed-wing aircraft since World War II.

In 2020, Izumo began the conversion to operate F-35B fighter aircraft. Izumo was undergoing modifications, such as strengthening the heat resistance of the deck and installing power supply equipment to enable the departure and arrival of the F-35B.

The renovation work to change the bow shape to a quadrangle for the safe operation of the F-35B and the maintenance of the interior compartments are scheduled to be carried out in the second renovation.

The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is an American family of single-seat, single-engine, all-weather stealth multirole combat aircraft that is intended to perform both air superiority and strike missions. It is also able to provide electronic warfare and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities.

As a Foreign Military Sales (FMS) participant, the JASDF has an established program of record of 147 F-35 Aircraft, consisting of 105 F-35 A models and up to 42 F-35 B models. Japan is acquiring the most F-35s of any international customer.

Acquisition of the Kongsberg NSM to replace the Harpoon anti-ship missile in the ANZAC Class frigates and Hobart Class destroyers provides a significant enhancement to Australia's maritime strike capability – more than doubling the current maritime strike range of our frigates and destroyers.

Commencing in 2024, ANZAC Class frigates and Hobart Class destroyers will have the NSM capability installed.

The combination of NSM and previously announced Tomahawk Cruise Missiles is the best mix of capability to meet Australia's needs and is proven in service with our key alliance partner, the United States.

Een mooie combinatie die ook voor onze KM wel eens de beste mix kan zijn.

Overigens moeten we ook niet raar staan te kijken als de Australiërs de komende jaren gaan na denken over een vliegkampschip. De Britse Queen Elisabeth klasse zou een mooi ontwerp zijn voor ze, eventueel uitgerust met CATOBAR en F-35C. Al is de standaard versie met F-35B en de 2 LHD's een logischere keuze.

Royal Malaysian Navy MRSS   ( in deze Tender doet Damen ook mee, waarschijnlijk worden de andere ontwerpen ook deze week onthuld )

The RMN « 15 to 5 » transformation program involves the acquisition of three MRSS ships. Original plan (which we learned during LIMA 2019) called for the first two ships to be delivered between 2021-2025 and the third one by 2035. This schedule has been postponed, likely because of the pandemic. According to information gathered since LIMA 2019, there are many shipbuilders waiting for a potential RFP: Besides HHI which unveiled its design at DSA 2022 this week, other competitors include the Netherlands' Damen, France's Naval Group, China's CSOC shipyard, Indonesia's PT PAL, Japan's Mitsui, and Turkey's TAIS.

The vessel is expected to be an LPD design capable of amphibious operations, HADR and refueling of other vessels while underway. The hangar and helicopter deck should be able to accommodate up to three Caracal helicopters of the Royal Malaysian Air Force.


HHI Unveils HDL-13000 Design



The HDL-13000 design is being proposed for the Royal Malaysian Navy's Multi-Role Support Ship (MRSS) acquisition project.

HHI participates in the 'DSA 2022' held at the MITEC in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for 4 days from March 28 to 31 and showcases its 4 models of naval vessels, including the new HDL-13000 to target the global naval defense market.

HDL-13000, unveiled by HHI at DSA 2022, is a multi-role support ship which has 160 meters of length overall, 25 meters of beam, and a displacement of 13,000 tons. This vessel will serve as a main platform for the force's logistics support and also Humanitarian and Disaster Relief (HADR) operation.

The most prominent aspect of the design configuration is the enclosed Vehicle Deck that runs the length of the vessel from the bow to the stern which can carry more than 16 Main Battle Tanks and 6 Multirole Armored Vehicles. The aft portion of the Vehicle Deck also serves as a Well Deck. A sideport ramp and a stern gate provide access to the Vehicle Deck, and the ship has sufficient ballast tank capacity to sink/trim the vessel to flood the well deck to accommodate landing craft that can be used to transfer personnel, vehicles, and/or cargo to and from the shore.

- twee BAe 40 mm Mk4 te zien zijn (juist voor de brug-bovenbouw, eentje per boord),
- een Phalanx CIWS bovenop de heli-hangar - ongelukkig geplaatst tussen de twee funnels, daarbij de 'firing arc' enorm beperkend.

Opvallende keuze bij de Britten om de 2 LPD's, 3 LSD's & HMS Argus te vervangen door een zestal Multi Role Support Ships. Daarmee kiezen ze er dus waarschijnlijk voor om geen nieuwe LPD's te bouwen maar meer de kant op gaan van een JSS maar dan met een dok voor landingsvaartuigen en minder RAS capaciteit.

Ik betwijfel of dit iets voor Nederland kan gaan zijn, dan ben ik meer fan van het oude Duitse concept MRD-200. Net zo multirole als het bovenstaande concept, maar wel meer vlieg capaciteit en ook goed uit te rusten met (beperkte) RAS capaciteit via de kraan of via een mast aan/in de opbouw.

Uitstraling koop je niets voor, ik als marine-man prefereer de Oto Melara 76 Super Rapid kanons, die hebben een langere loop.

Ik zie nergens iets over een Leonardo/OTO Melara 76 mm naval gun met een looplengte van minder dan 62.
Volgens mij is 62 kalibers de standaard voor de 76 mm.

Als het budget het toelaat is alles mogelijk, Mijn alternatieve variant is: 76 Super Rapid op de boeg, RAM op de boeg. Op de hangar RAM en Sovraponte. En Lionfish 20MM stuurboord en bakboord.

Budget is uiteraard leidend , maar het 127 mm kanon voegt ook een hoop toe op gebied van anti-surface warfare en dan met name de amfibische landing ondersteuning. Maar inderdaar die opstelling zou ik ook heel goed mee kunnen leven al ben ik geen fan van die 20 mm Lionfish's.



Overigens is het nog maar de vraag of onze Sovraponte hetzelfde gaat zijn als die op de PPA's, Leonardo bied het kanon ook aan zonder de geleiding in de toren. En Thales levert de Pharos die specifiek ontwikkeld is voor geleide munitie. Maar als back-up systeem zou het niet onverstandig zijn.

In plaats van de 20 mm LionFish zie ik er liever een 2 tal 40 mm Marlin's op geplaatst worden. Bied meer opties qua (geleide) munitie en ook tegen luchtdoelen beter inzetbaar. Ook komt het 40 mm weer overeen met het kaliber dat we gaan gebruiken op de mijnbestrijdings vaartuigen.
