US Army and UK MoD move out with plans to acquire Elbit Systems' Iron Fist Light Decoupled APS   ( nu de order uit NL nog .. )

Israeli-based Elbit Systems is slated to receive two coveted contracts for its Iron Fist Light Decoupled (IF-LD) active protection system (APS), one from the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) and another from the US Army.

Both countries recently detailed plans to acquire the system, with the US Army planning to award General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems (Elbit Systems' US-based partner) with a new USD122.2 million contract in January 2020, and the UK MoD awarding Elbit Systems a USD1.5 million (GBP1.2 million) contract for a single system to evaluate.

According to US Army plans, the new multi-million dollar contract will cover 154 IF-LD systems, as well as 14 calibration and maintenance kits, and 2,484 IF-LD APS countermeasures for its Bradley fleet.

"These items will be installed on Bradley Fighting Vehicles for testing and as needed to meet the demands of the European Deterrence Initiative," the service wrote in a 21 May announcement on the Federal Business Opportunities website.

Over the past several decades, the US ground service has grappled with APS fielding over numerous attempts to develop a 'best-of-breed' system, as well as fielding near-term solutions. Now, with the proliferation of Russian anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs), the US Army is developing a Modular Active Protection System while also crafting a plan to field non-developmental systems. So far, the service has decided to field Rafael's Trophy system on its Abrams tank and Iron Fist on its M2 Bradley while it continues to evaluate which system is best for its fleet of Stryker vehicles.

In addition to fielding IF-LD on some of its fleet of Bradley vehicles, the service is also pairing the hard-kill system with BAE Systems' RAVEN soft-kill APS system on the vehicle for a layered demonstration this year.

Russia's top brass considers switching armor to 57mm caliber firepower   ( wordt de 57mm het standaard kaliber voor de Russen ? )

MOSCOW, May 21. /TASS/. The Russian engineering company Tecmash and the state hi-tech corporation Rostec are considering replacing 30mm guns with 57mm weapons in Russian armored vehicles' munitions systems. Russia's Defense Ministry is also studying this possibility, Tecmash Deputy CEO Alexander Kochkin told TASS on Tuesday.

"We are carrying out an assessment together with Rostec State Corporation and the customer represented by the Defense Ministry is conducting the relevant work," Kochkin said, replying to a question about the possibility for Russian armored vehicles to switch to the 57mm caliber.

Today the 30mm caliber is the basic diameter of guns for Russia's light-and medium-armored vehicles. The switchover by Russia's entire armor to the new caliber depends on available financial resources.

"The caliber change will require huge expenses on the upgrade of the operational armament and military hardware," Kochkin explained. That is why, Rostec enterprises are working in this area "on their own initiative," he added.

Several weapon systems with the new caliber were on display at the Army-2018 defense exhibition in Kubinka near Moscow last year. In particular, Russia featured the Derivatsiya-PVO air defense artillery system based on the chassis of the BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicle and the promising T-15 heavy infantry fighting vehicle based on the Armata platform and armed with the Kinzhal combat module containing the 57mm gun and anti-tank missiles.

Alexander Potapov, CEO of the defense manufacturer, Uralvagonzavod, (part of Rostec) said at the recent Milex-2019 arms show that the company had intended to study various options of using 57mm guns for the Air Force, the Army and the Navy.
The Burevestnik Central Research Institute within Uralvagonzavod is engaged in developing the Derivatsiya-PVO anti-aircraft artillery system and the AU-220M 'Baikail' 57mm combat module.
