Norway orders new NASAMS units from Kongsberg



The Norwegian government has ordered new National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS) from Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace to strengthen the country's air defences, Kongsberg announced on 31 January 2024.

The contract is valued at approximately NOK 1.4 billion (EUR 120 million), with deliveries expected in the 2026-2027 timeframe.

Kongberg's contract with the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (NDMA) includes new multi-missile canister launchers and new fire distribution centres for NASAMS, replacing equipment previously donated to Ukraine. The delivery will provide Norway with the latest generation of NASAMS, developed to meet current and future threats.

"These are investments that secure the country," Norwegian Defence Minister Bjørn Arild Gram was quoted as saying in a Kongsberg press release. "The war in Ukraine has shown how important air defence is, and before Christmas the Norwegian government was able to present a record order for air defence to the Norwegian armed forces. We have taken extraordinary measures to speed up the acquisition. The contract for the re-acquisition of donated material is the first step."

"A state-of-the-art air defence system is strategically important for Norway's defence capabilities and is vital for safeguarding our national security interests," added Eirik Lie, president of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace. "Norway was the first NASAMS user, and we are pleased to extend the strong collaboration with this and forthcoming deliveries."

The original NASAMS, then known as the Norwegian Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System, was delivered to the Norwegian armed forces in the 1990s. Today there are currently 13 NASAMS user nations.

NASAMS' modularity and open architecture enable the continuous introduction of new technology and new capabilities, ensuring that the system can be adapted to new threats and missions throughout its lifetime. Kongsberg sees it as "one of the most flexible solutions in the market", covering "a wide range of air defence needs".

"For us, it is important to support Ukraine with the necessary material, while at the same time we must ensure a well-armed Norway," stated Gro Jære, director of the NDMA. "This project has been completed in half the time of a normal project run thanks to good efforts from all parties, which I see as a positive development."

To expedite production Kongsberg invested in expanding its own production capacity while strengthening ties with its Norwegian and international suppliers.

Ik kan me voorstellen dat in grote delen van Turkije dit niet zo'n risico is. Maar inderdaad: verder naar het noorden zou ik toch liever tracked hebben.

Geen idee hoe veel het regent en hoe hard de grond is in Turkije. Maar door de oorlog in Oekraine vindt ik wat van dergelijke vrachtwagens. Ze zijn ook nog eens erg duur in aanschaf.

Turkish company Aselsan showcases Gürz Hybrid Gun-Missile Air Defense Systems at WDS 2024

At the World Defense Show (WDS) 2024, the Turkish company Aselsan is showcasing its latest innovation in air defense technology: the Gürz air defense system. This cutting-edge system, mounted on Anadolu Isuzu's Seyit 8x8 truck platform, represents a leap forward in the capabilities and flexibility of air defense solutions.



The Gürz system integrates a formidable arsenal, including a 35mm cannon and four BOZDOĞAN or GÖKDOĞAN air defense missiles, offering a versatile response to aerial threats. Key to its operation is a Fire Control Radar paired with a 4-array Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, enhancing target acquisition and tracking capabilities. Tübitak Sage General Manager Gürcan Okumuş has highlighted ongoing research to deploy GÖKDOĞAN and BOZDOĞAN missiles from ground-based platforms, broadening the system's applicability.

Türkiye's air defense architecture has traditionally relied on separate systems for low-altitude defense, including the MAR search radar on the AIC or HİSAR-A and fire control radars on Korkut vehicles. Aselsan's new hybrid system consolidates these capabilities onto a single platform, offering both search and fire control radar functionalities. This integration allows for comprehensive coverage across multiple defense layers, previously managed by the Hisar-A and Korkut systems separately.

The hybrid air defense system's unified platform approach not only simplifies the operational framework but also enhances mobility and deployment speed, critical for protecting vital areas and convoys. By covering multiple defense layers simultaneously, Aselsan's innovation offers a strategic advantage in modern air defense, emphasizing rapid response and adaptability in a volatile security environment.

Het Armored Combat Support Vehicle (ACSV) G5 van het Flensburgse voertuigbouwbedrijf FFG zal een luchtverdedigingsmissiemodule krijgen, zoals de regionale verkoopdirecteur van het bedrijf, Benjamin Lindsay, heeft aangekondigd op de International Vehicle Conference in Londen.

FFG levert eigenlijk alleen het ACSV G5-draagvoertuig, dat mobiliteit en bescherming voor de bemanning biedt. Standaard ISO twistlocks maken een snelle integratie mogelijk van een 10 voet ISO container of 6 voet ISO container en extra arbeidsmiddelen zoals een kraan. De G5 zorgt voor de energie, elektrisch en/of hydraulisch. Hij wordt aangedreven door een 6-cilinder MTU-motor (dezelfde als in de boxer, alleen met twee cilinders minder) met 433 kW. Door gebruik te maken van de uit één stuk bestaande rubberen band-composietketting van Soucy loopt de G5 bijzonder trillingsarm en stil.

Er zijn vijf varianten besteld of al geleverd. Daartoe behoren een vrachtvariant, een pioniersvariant met kraan, een variant voor luchtverdediging en een variant als drager voor de Thales GM 200-radar en een bergingsvoertuig. Er bestaan ��concepten voor een 120 mm mortier en een beschermde personeelscarrier.

Het Nederlandse Ministerie van Defensie maakte in juni 2023 bekend dat de krijgsmacht een G5 luchtverdedigingsvariant voor korte afstandsluchtverdediging (SHORAD) tot 75 kilometer had besteld, die in 2028 beschikbaar zou moeten zijn.

Het systeem wordt ontwikkeld door Kongsberg en Raytheon. Kongsberg ontwerpt en bouwt het zelfvoorzienende systeem met radar en vuurleiding. Het systeem is interoperabel met andere luchtverdedigingssystemen, met name NASAMS. Raytheon levert de Sidewinder luchtafweerraketten voor de twee dubbele lanceerinrichtingen. Het systeem kan ook Diehl's IRSI-T geleide raket afvuren.

Kongsberg en FFG willen het systeem en andere G5-varianten in juni op het Eurosatory in Parijs aan het vakpubliek presenteren.

De radardrager zal worden uitgerust met de nieuwe GM200-radar van Thales. De eerste van deze radars – zij het op vrachtwagens – worden de komende dagen aan Nederland overgedragen.

Van de G5, die sinds 2012 op de markt is, zijn er in Noorwegen 51 in gebruik. Volgens rapporten zal er nog eens behoefte zijn aan maximaal 150 G5's. De omvang van de Nederlandse orde is onbekend.
