The Czech company Excalibur Army, part of the Czechoslovak Group (CSG) owned by arms manufacturer Michal Strnad, is expected to play a significant role in this new venture. A source close to the negotiations revealed that Excalibur Army would be primarily involved in the contract, benefiting not only the Czech Army but also other nations interested in the advanced Leopard 2A8 tanks.

Preliminary plans suggest broad participation by the Czech defense industry, with a focus on establishing a new assembly line for tank turrets at the Excalibur Army facility in Šternberk, Olomouc. This initiative marks a significant step in domestic manufacturing capabilities.

The Leopard 2A8 tank represents the latest variant in the development of the Leopard 2 main battle tank series, which is overseen by the German company Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW). Although detailed specifications of the Leopard 2A8 are not extensively documented, it is expected to offer superior enhancements over its predecessor, the Leopard 2A7, particularly in terms of armor, firepower, and technological advancements.

The tank is likely to feature advanced armor protection, incorporating new armor technologies that provide increased resistance against modern threats. This includes upgraded composite armor and potentially active protection systems designed to intercept and neutralize incoming projectiles. Additionally, the Leopard 2A8 is expected to possess enhanced firepower capabilities, with improvements to its main gun system for greater accuracy and lethality. The integration of modern digital systems for command, control, communications, computers, and intelligence (C4I) will also enhance its operational effectiveness, enabling seamless communication and coordination on the battlefield.

Overall, the Leopard 2A8 aims to maintain the legacy of the Leopard tank series, combining robust defensive features with powerful offensive capabilities to meet the demands of contemporary warfare.

The Czech Republic has ambitious plans to acquire at least 77 Leopard 2A8 tanks, with the first batch expected by 2027 and full delivery by 2030, according to the Ministry of Defense. This acquisition is part of a broader strategy to modernize the Czech military's armored forces.

Discussions about this collaboration began in 2023 when the German company Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) explored the possibility of expanding production capacities in the Czech Republic. The Czech defense industry's unique capabilities are well recognized, currently supporting Ukraine with military hardware and ammunition amidst ongoing conflicts.

KMW aims to ramp up its production from the current three to four Leopard 2A7 tanks per month to 20, reminiscent of Cold War production rates. However, this expansion is contingent on augmenting existing capacities, a gap the Czech industry is expected to fill.

Moreover, Defense Minister Jana Černochová has indicated that the Czech Republic plans a joint tank order with the German Bundeswehr. Several other countries, including Lithuania, Estonia, Norway, Sweden, Italy, and Spain, have also shown interest in the Leopard 2A8 tanks.

In a broader scope, the Czech army plans to overhaul its fleet by replacing the older T-72M4 CZ tanks with up to 122 new Leopard 2 tanks, including both the Leopard 2A8 and older Leopard 2A4 models, the latter of which was received as part of compensation for the Czech Republic's support to Ukraine.

This strategic partnership not only strengthens the military ties between the Czech Republic and Germany but also positions the Czech defense industry on a global stage, ready to meet the increasing demand for advanced military technologies.

Het is niet gek dat afgeronde projecten de markt niet halen en dienen als protype testbed voor een andere richting. Het is niet nutteloos geweest. Lijkt me wel meest verstandig het bij 1 algemeen type te houden.

Nou als we de militaire leiding van de NAVO moeten geloven is het 5 voor 12 en moeten we het stadium prototype al voorbij zijn en druk bezig zijn onze legereenheden van het betere materiaal te voorzien of in elk geval van betere uitrusting anders is het einde oefening, althans dat beweren ze.

De Leopard 2 AX heet dan nog steeds Leopard 2, ongeacht of dit de 2A9 of de 2A19 (gechargeerd) is. Een Leopard 1 A6 is ook nog steeds geen Leopard 2

According to Welt, the German government has a awarded an R&D contract to Rheinmetall, but Rheinmetall itself lists the project as a joint-venture (see above)... so likely KMW is also included. Little is publkicly known about the project, but Rheinmetall CEO Papperger believes that "many" Panther technologies such as the 130 mm L52 and autoloader will find its way into it.

Nog een andere oude ontwikkeling ; LAHAT voor de 120mm (of 130mm) als long range AT. Is dit ook interessant ? of niet meer aan beginnen en beter investeren in Loitering munitions en Drone's/UAV's     

Ik zou de optie meenemen, i.c.m. drones is dat interessant.

Volstrekt nutteloze aantallen in deze tijden.

Eens, maar dit betreft geen commerciële onderneming, maar een staatsbedrijf. In theorie is het heel gemakkelijk hier een paar miljard in te pompen. Maar.. dat is i.t.t. tot weer een commercieel bedrijf dat overal investeringen vandaan kan ontvangen weggelegd voor de Duitse overheid.

Ik kan me trouwens niet voorstellen dat DLD deze dingen alleen gaat produceren. Frankrijk moet dit toch ook willen dunkt me. Of, het moet zo zijn dat de onderstel productie voor DLD gaat zijn en toren productie voor FRA.

Ben ik ook wel voor, als DLD dit ook doet.

Als AX versie de nieuwe standaard wordt na de huidige A8 versie en deze breed gedragen gaat worden. Dat Duitsland zelf ook de AX aan gaat schaffen is idd een pre. Vooral met de integratie van NL bij de Du landmacht.
Voor mijn gevoel is de tijd tussen de daadwerkelijke uitlevering van de A8 en de AX klein, eigenlijk te klein. Voor mijn gevoel moeten ze nu in een gezamenlijk verband (dus alle landen die nu gekozen hebben voor de A8) kiezen voor de AX en deze met grote spoed ontwikkelen en niet nog een tussen versie invoeren van A8 en straks nog weer versies welke per land aangepast zijn. Tevens als landen nu voor A8 versie gaan, deze landen kiezen niet over een jaar of 7 voor de nieuwe AX met 130mm. 
Nu kiezen voor AX, is een flinke stap voorwaarts.
En Nederland moet dan aansluiten.

Belangrijkste nieuws

-project gaat door.
-KMW kan maar 40 tot 50 tanks per jaar maken. (Kmw = praktisch Duits staatsbedrijf, lijkt me daarom niet moeilijk om te investeren)
-sowieso 130mm kanon, maar Fra wil (nog steeds) haar 140mm kanon gebruiken.
-autolader onvermijdelijk, ook wegens te zware projectielen na 120mm.
