CitaatDrone sightings spread beyond New Jersey as officials express outrage over federal response

Authorities in New York, Maryland and Connecticut have joined the chorus calling for a more urgency from the federal government to the mysterious unidentified flying objects.
Rep. Hakeem Jeffries is urging Congress to take action.

Murphy said he wants to "encourage Congress to pass legislation empowering state and local law enforcement entities to use advanced detection and mitigation technologies to deal with UAS."

Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., wrote his own letter to DHS, FBI, FAA and the Department of Defense on Friday, requesting a briefing on drone activity no later than Dec. 18.

"I am writing to express my deep concerns regarding the increased reporting of drone activity in the airspace near New England. As you are aware, these states are home to some of the busiest and most complex airspaces in the country," Blumenthal wrote.

Calls for flight restrictions, no-fly zones
Staten Island Borough President Vito Fosella and Malliotakis said that they reached out to the FAA last week after the first reported sighting on Staten Island.

Drone-ophef in Amerika

CitaatA mystery in the skies—with more random drones lighting up the skies—is now being investigated in the Garden State.

From Delaware County and Philadelphia to New Jersey, there are now possible drone sightings on both sides of the Delaware River.

One sighting occurred Sunday night in Evesham Township and also now in Delaware County. So what's going on?

"I stood inside and recorded and went outside and I said yeah it's not an airplane. It's not a helicopter. Oh, I've seen video of drones around. I bet ya it's one of those drones," said Morgan Weber, who saw a possible drone.

Weber, who lives in Media, is now among the dozens of people in the area, and in parts of New Jersey, who've recorded nighttime video of possible drones over the last two weeks.

"I think if it was something more serious, the government would've shot them down from the sky. I think they know what's going on and they're not telling us," she added.

The recent videos have sparked curiosity and concern, rightfully so, according to retired Air Force Major General James Poss, an intelligence and drone expert.

"As intelligence officers, we're responsible for figuring out what the bad guy aircraft are—not the good guy aircraft. If it's a bad guy aircraft, they need to go back to terrorist school because everybody can see them. They're flying over populated areas so I don't think it's anything nefarious," said Poss.

General Poss consults in the drone industry. He has another theory, based on the reported size of the yet-to-be-identified flying objects.

"I would bet you that this is not a drone. I would bet you this is possibly a long clunky name Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing aircraft, otherwise...flying cars," Poss speculated.

Yes, possibly—manned high-tech flying vehicles, which have surpassed the development stage— and the general days, the EVTOLs are not breaking any FAA regulations.

"As long as it is not in restricted airspace with a beacon ADS and not over 10,000 feet or over a major airfield flight, visual rules they don't have to file a flight plan with the FAA," Poss explained.

General Poss says the recent sightings appear large for a drone, which would have a remote ID, that the FAA and FBI could track. And only federal authorities can take action.

"Active measures against drones can only be resolved by the federal government," Poss asserted.

Drone or EVTOL—on the ground, people are talking.

"I think it's like they're trying to see what everyone is doing with the public, almost like a census. It is a weird conspiracy." mentioned Dayna Sacharov.

Last week, New Jersey Governor Murphy said he'd have agencies looking into it, and that includes state agencies and also the FBI.

Best apart.

CitaatThe FBI has issued a statement addressing ongoing mystery drone sightings that have now spread from New Jersey to New York, urging public cooperation in their investigation.

It comes as residents in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, reported drones on Sunday night, joining numerous sightings across New Jersey in recent weeks.

The sightings, which began in November, have alarmed residents in neighboring New Jersey.

Drones have reportedly been spotted near the Picatinny Arsenal, a U.S. military facility, and President-elect Donald Trump's Bedminster golf course. In response, the Federal Aviation Administration temporarily restricted drone flights over these locations.

"We understand the concern, and we are doing all we can to figure out what's going on," a spokeswoman for the FBI's Newark Field Office, which is leading the investigation, told PIX11 News. "We truly don't have much information to provide at the moment."

Newsweek has contacted FBI Newark via email for comment.

Diane Atkins, a Brooklyn resident, captured videos of the objects near the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, describing them as loud and numerous. "There had to be 10, maybe 12 total of these things," Atkins told PIX11. "Definitely not planes, and there were too many of them."

Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis shared Atkins's videos on X, questioning the lack of information from authorities. "The FAA, FBI, Department of Homeland Security, and NYPD should let the public know what's going on here," she wrote.

"Are these drones and why are they flying over sensitive facilities and infrastructure? After the Chinese Spy balloon, anyone can understand why community is concerned!"

Malliotakis was referring to a 2023 incident when the United States Air Force shot down a Chinese spy balloon off the coast of South Carolina, a week after it had entered U.S. airspace.

w Jersey Governor Phil Murphy commented on the situation on Monday, saying that while authorities have not identified any immediate threats, they are treating the sightings with seriousness.

"This is something we're taking deadly seriously," Murphy said during a press conference Monday, adding, "These are apparently very, as I understand it, very sophisticated. The minute you get eyes on them, they go dark."

Murphy said state and federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, are actively investigating. He noted that 49 sightings were reported on Sunday.

A viral video claiming to show a drone crash circulated online, though no official confirmation has emerged.

Joseph Orlando, Florham Park Police chief, called the drones' presence "nefarious in nature," though authorities maintain there is no imminent threat.

Unusual phenomena have been linked to the sightings, including a family's report of their car clock changing while a drone hovered overhead.

Residents have been asked to report any sightings and to share any videos or photos they may have of the flights by calling the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324) or submitting it online at tips@fbi.gov.
