US forces 'tighten Najaf noose'

American tanks and Iraqi soldiers are moving into position closer to the Imam Ali shrine in the holy Iraqi city of Najaf, eyewitnesses say.
The mosque complex is occupied by militia loyal to the rebellious Shia cleric, Moqtada Sadr.

The move comes after days of heavy fighting in the streets around the Imam Ali shrine.

Interim Iraqi Defence Minister Hazim Shalaan is quoted as saying that the government is losing patience.

However, correspondents point out that several previous ultimatums from the US-backed Iraqi government have passed without the shrine - the holiest of Shia Islam - being damaged.

Mr Sadr's Mehdi Army militia has been fighting American marines surrounding the shrine for the past three weeks.

'Simple operation'

"Today, they (the Iraqi troops) complete the operation of encircling the shrine compound," Mr Shaalan said.

The troops would use loudspeakers to urge the militants to evacuate the shrine, he added.

"If they don't listen to reason, then certainly there will be a very simple operation, a very simple raid. The decisive hours are near."

Er waren berichten dat de Iraakse politie de moskee HAD ingenomen maar de lrgerleiding van de VS onkende dit en nu blijkt dus dat de moskee helemaal niet is ingenomen.

Er moest toch ooit iets gebeuren en nogmaals, ik vind dat het Amerikaanse leger TOP werk leverd op dit moment!

zou goed nieuws zijn maar imo was het risico te groot

Het goede nieuws is van korte dur, want het Amerikaanse leger zegt dat de Iraakse politie de Moskee helemaal NIET heeft ingenomen, maar zelf zeggen ze van wel, het is dus niet zeker of de moskee nu WEL of NIET is ingenomen, ik hoorde op cnn dat de mensen in de Moskee zich hebben overgegeven.

Het is dus afwachten op wat meer nieuws, maar ze zeggen niet zomaar dat het is ingenomen.

UPDATE: volgens de politie hebben ze het ingenomen en hebben ze 400 opstandelingen gearresteerd.

Ook wil Al-Sadr de moskee overdragen aan het Iraakse hoogste bestuur ofzoiets.

Maar het is bijna zker dat die is ingenomen door Iraakse autoriteiten.

dat is idd goed nieuws

betekend dat die al sadr toch niet zo'n bikkel is alstie zichzelf voor heeft gedaan, zal hem weinig steun opleveren

nu maar hopen dat die militanten er nu uit de buurt blijven en die begraafplaatsen niet te erg zijn beschadigd en dan zal het geweld wel weer afsterven denk ik

De vraag is wel: Waar zijn die gasten nu heen?

Ze hebben ze toch niet laten gaan he?


Maar ja, ok elke ander plek kunnen ze met grof geweld worden uitgeschakeld. Zolang ze uit de buurt blijven van moskeen e.d. zullen ze aangepakt kunnen worden.

Ik wist gewoon dat ze het voor elkaar zouden krijgen  :)
Mag toch wel gezegd worden dat dit een knap staaltje werk van de Amerikaanse en Iraakse troepen is , maar ze zijn er nog niet, nu maar afachten wat er verder gaat gebeuren  :)

Al-Sadr supporters leave Najaf mosque
Iraqi police enter mosque without fight

NAJAF, Iraq (CNN) -- Iraqi police seized control of the Imam Ali Mosque in Najaf on Friday after the fighters loyal to Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr withdrew, the Iraqi Interior Ministry said.

The Iraqi Interior Ministry said police peacefully entered the mosque Friday afternoon.
U.S. and Iraqi forces had surrounded the outskirts of the mosque compound Friday as part of offensive operations aimed at putting pressure on the fighters, who were holed up in the mosque complex.

A spokesman for al-Sadr said al-Sadr ordered the mosque to be handed over to "the highest religious authority."

Iraqi Ministry of Health officials Friday said 77 Iraqis were killed and 70 were wounded in heavy fighting in Najaf overnight.

The dead included six Iraqi police officers.

Recent fighting in the city center has damaged the mosque and two of its minarets, according to a CNN producer who visited the compound.

Al-Sadr had refused to negotiate on the latest Iraqi government ultimatum because, an aide said, he and his forces want to deal with the Iraqi National Conference delegation and not the interim government.

Thousands of militants loyal to al-Sadr were inside the mosque, and Iraqi officials had threatened to "liberate" the mosque in a military offensive if the forces don't leave.

"We are very determined that blood loss should be minimized," interim Prime Minister Ayad Allawi said.

CNN producer Kianne Sadeq, who went inside the mosque compound Thursday with a group of journalists, reported persistent sounds of mortars, gunfire and explosions. She said there was also a great deal of sniper fire.

The journalists were greeted by the Mehdi Army with cheers and chants of "We will not stand down!" Fighters flashed pictures of al-Sadr and many danced. Also inside the compound were women and children, most of whom appeared in a festive mood like the rest of the al-Sadr followers. (On the Scene: Inside the mosque)

Homes and businesses around the compound were heavily damaged. The streets were empty, and Sadeq described the area as a virtual ghost town.

"Everything outside of the mosque seems to be totaled," Sadeq said.

The Iraqi Ministry of Health also said Friday that fighting in Baghdad overnight had killed 13 Iraqis and wounded 107, with most of the casualties happening in Sadr City, the Iraqi Ministry of Health said. The area is a Shiite neighborhood and a focus for the activities of al-Sadr supporters.

Airstrikes in Falluja
U.S. airstrikes on antiaircraft positions in Falluja on Friday killed at least five Iraqis, according to a hospital official in the city.

Lt. Col. Thomas Johnson with the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force said the airstrikes targeted sites that were firing on U.S. aircraft.

The first strike happened around 1 a.m. (5 p.m. Thursday ET) in the western district of al-Sina'i, killing two people and wounding four others.

The second took place about 10 hours later and resulted in large secondary explosions, Johnson said, suggesting a weapons depot was nearby the anti-aircraft position.

A Falluja hospital official told a different story, saying the airstrike hit a milk factory, killing three Iraqis and wounding two others.

Earlier, a U.S. C-130 gunship fired on insurgents in eastern Falluja, after insurgents fired small arms and anti-aircraft weapons at the gunship overnight Thursday.

They were also seen firing mortars at a U.S. military base there. Minutes later, the C-130 dropped bombs in the industrial and military neighborhoods, a CNN stringer reported.

Gewoon afwachten wat de AMerikanen gaan doen, ze krijgen hem hoe dan ook te pakken of hij vlucht naar het buitenland.

De Amerikaanse millitairen die aan de aanval meedoen zijn ook niet nieuw in Irak, volgens mij zitten die er al vanaf hetr begin van de oorlog, dus het zijn geen onervaren jochies van 18 meer denk ik, ze weten wat ze doen en tot nu toe zijn er alleen maar veel slachtoffers aan Irakeze (militie) zijde gevallen, iets van 70 ofzo,dus tot nu toe gaat het prima.

ik krijg de indruk dat het qua aanhang nogwel meevalt (als het er 10.000 zijn ben ik onder de indruk).

dat weet hij zelf ook, daarom verschanst hij zich in die moskee want dan is iig de hele islamitische wereld tegen een aanval.
imo schieten ze hem dood, the sooner the better, dan is het afgelopen (het is geen terreurcel maar een militie, cut off the head enzo ... )

maar die kans hebben ze gehad en verprutst hij zal echt niet meer naar buiten komen die blijft gewoon op zijn bom zitten tot een Amerikaan de deur intrapt

Tja, dat ie het niet kan winnen is wel duidelijk. Maar helaas heeft ie nog al veel aanhang. En dus zullen hem wel blijven steunen, als ie gevangen word genomen, of als ie om het leven komt. )Denk trouwens ook niet dat ie zelfmoord zal plegen, deed Sadam ook niet.)
En dan breekt dus de pleuris uit waar oud_zijde het ook over heeft neem ik aan.

Neej denk ik ook niet, maar hoe dan ook, het werd tijd dat ze een shard worden aangepakt en nu moeten ze doordringen ook, nog even en Al-Sadr ziet in dat het een hopeloze situatie is en dat die het NIET zal winnen van de Amerikanen omdat die gewoon te sterk zijn, overgeven zal wel niet, hij zal eerder zelfmoord plegen.

Ja, was het maar zo simpel! Helaas werkt het niet zo. Die moslims nemen om alles wraak, zeker om een heilige moskee. Dan maakt het voor hun niet uit of dat IDF soldaten zijn, of Amerikanen. Ze hebben gewoon weer een mooie reden om de Amerikanen te pakken, en denk trouwens maar niet dat de hele bevolking dan weet dat het IDF soldaten waren hoor.

Als je kijkt naar de tijd waarop ik dat bericht poste, kan je opmaken dat het niet aan jou was gericht  

IK wist nog niet dat ze explosieven hadden geplaatst, dat maakt het idd een heel ander verhaal, maar dan nog, 25 man die toch OOIT naar buiten moeten komen, zal niet lang meer duren denk ik...
