De fabrikant is blijkbaar nog niet klaar met testen en de Braziliaanse luchtmacht denkt het met minder af te kunnen dan de oorspronkelijke order van 28 stuks.

The Brazilian manufacturer EMBRAER built a new unpaved runway parallel to the existing one at Gaviao Peixoto/Embraer-Unidade Gaviao Peixoto (SP), where the Millennium assembly line is located.

On the new 5,905ft (1,800 m) runway, assessments will be performed over the next weeks to analyse the effective operation of the KC-390.

The aircraft's landing gear has low-pressure tires, two 5,9 bar (85 psi) on the nose and four 7,2 bar (105 psi) on either side bogies for unpaved ground or damaged runways.

On 6 June 2021, Scramble Magazine reported on the total number of KC-390s for the Força Aérea Brasileira (FAB, Brazilian Air Force).

Due to the economic situation, the FAB simply lacks the funds for this acquisition. Another factor is that the operational performance of the KC-390 exceeds expectations. So, the projected quantity of aircraft is not necessary to do the work. Negotiations with EMBRAER are under way.

Brazil conducts extreme cold weather trials for KC/C-390 in Alaska

Brazil has conducted extreme cold weather testing of the Embraer KC/C-390 Millennium transport aircraft in Alaska.

The Brazilian Air Force (Força Aérea Brasileira: FAB) announced on 12 February that it had despatched one of its recently acquired airlifters to Fairbanks to be exposed to temperatures as low as -37.8°C (-47.8°C including wind chill).

"The Brazilian Air Force and Embraer started the tests of extreme cold (Cold Soak) of the KC-390 Millennium in the United States on 8 February. The mission aims to verify the integration of all subsystems and the robustness of the new FAB freighter in a hostile environment, with extremely low temperature conditions," the service said.

As noted by the FAB, the test campaign was managed by the Coordinating Committee of the Combat Aircraft Program (COPAC), and includes representatives from the Institute for Promotion and Industrial Coordination (IFI), test engineers from the Flight Research and Testing Institute (IPEV), and members of Embraer. The aircraft operation was supported by the crew of the First Troop Transport Group (1st GTT) 'Zeus' Squadron.

"Unlike an environmental qualification regarding the component, the Cold Soak test aims to investigate, in terms of the system, the effect of exposing the aircraft to extremely low temperatures, for a considerable time on the ground, a situation in which the systems failure may lead to service difficulty events, in which the aircraft is unable to operate," the FAB said.

After the requested exposure time, operational checks of the aircraft were conducted to verify the correct functionality of several systems, such as avionics, electric, hydraulic, flight controls, fuel, engines, auxiliary power unit (APU), and radar.

KC-390 MILLENNIUM for Hungary

The Hungarian Government and Embraer today signed a contract for the acquisition of two C-390 MILLENNIUM new generation multi-mission transport aircraft in air-to-air refuelling (AAR) configuration, earning the designation KC-390. Pilot and technician training, as well as other services and support, are included in the contract as part of the process to strengthen the Hungarian Defence Forces, specifically in the ares of tactical airlift, AAR and Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC) roles.

The KC-390, for which deliveries to the Hungarian Defence Forces are scheduled to start in 2023, will be the first in the world with the Intensive Care Unit in its configuration, an essential feature to perform humanitarian missions. The aircraft fully meets the requirements of the Hungarian Defense Forces, being able to perform different types of military and civilian missions including:

  • Humanitarian Support
  • MEDEVAC
  • Search and Rescue
  • Cargo and Troop Transport
  • Precision Cargo Drop
  • Paratroopers Operations
  • AAR
These KC-390s will be fully NATO compatible, not only in terms of hardware but also in its avionics and communications configuration. Furthermore, the KC-390 probe and drogue AAR system means the aircraft can refuel the Hungarian JAS 39 GRIPEN as well as other aircraft that use the same technology.

MILLENNIUM Sales

The C-390 MILLENNIUM is fully operational and, since receiving its first aircraft in 2019, the Brazilian Air Force has deployed the airlifter on several critical missions in Brazil and abroad. The Portuguese Government also signed a contract for the acquisition of five C-390 MILLENNIUMs in 2019, which are currently on the production line and will enter service in 2023.

The C-390 is a tactical transport aircraft designed to set new standards in its category. Some of the strong aspects of the aircraft are:

Boeing Terminates Agreement to Establish Joint Ventures with Embraer

CHICAGO, April 25, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) announced today that it has terminated its Master Transaction Agreement (MTA) with Embraer, under which the two companies sought to establish a new level of strategic partnership. The parties had planned to create a joint venture comprising Embraer's commercial aviation business and a second joint venture to develop new markets for the C-390 Millennium medium airlift and air mobility aircraft.

Under the MTA, April 24, 2020, was the initial termination date, subject to extension by either party if certain conditions were met. Boeing exercised its rights to terminate after Embraer did not satisfy the necessary conditions.

"Boeing has worked diligently over more than two years to finalize its transaction with Embraer. Over the past several months, we had productive but ultimately unsuccessful negotiations about unsatisfied MTA conditions. We all aimed to resolve those by the initial termination date, but it didn't happen," said Marc Allen, president of Embraer Partnership & Group Operations. "It is deeply disappointing. But we have reached a point where continued negotiation within the framework of the MTA is not going to resolve the outstanding issues."

The planned partnership between Boeing and Embraer had received unconditional approval from all necessary regulatory authorities, with the exception of the European Commission.

Boeing and Embraer will maintain their existing Master Teaming Agreement, originally signed in 2012 and expanded in 2016, to jointly market and support the C-390 Millennium military aircraft.

KC-390 Millennium Conducts Initial Chaff and Flare Launch Trials

Wing 3 at Canoas (RS) was the site of an unprecedented test of the KC-390 Millennium multi-mission aircraft. The three chaff and flare launches, the first partially and the last two fully loaded, were carried out at the end of October during two flights, with images recorded from the rear ramp of a C-105 Amazonas aircraft.

"The purpose of the test was to perform all maneuvers within the envelope of the aircraft to ensure that, in terms of safety, the aircraft can employ all chaffs and flares in the best way possible," said Lt. Engineer Rafael Macedo Trindade, from the Institute of Flight Research and Testing (IPEV), one of the military personnel accompanying the tests of the KC-390 Millennium by the Brazilian Air Force (FAB).

The C-105 and the KC-390 Millennium leveled out at about 10,000 feet and at a distance of 25 miles - approximately 40 kilometers - from the Gaucho coast, allowing images to be captured. In addition, the KC-390 Millennium itself was equipped with cameras that recorded the launches for analysis. And yet another aircraft - a Phenom business jet - was used to capture images from the side of the plane.

According to the KC-390 Millennium Project Operational Manager in Preparation Command (COMPREP), Major Reinaldo Alves da Silva, infrared radiation devices called chaff and flare are essential defensive countermeasures for a military aircraft. "The KC-390 is a multi-mission aircraft and, at some point, we may have to enter enemy territory. So, this autonomous defense system is used to outsmart weapons, radars and other aircraft," Major Alves says.

The first KC-390 Millennium was delivered to the FAB in September 2019 and is based in Wing 2 in Anapolis (GO). In all, 28 aircraft will make up the Air Force's fleet.

After each certification, the crews will operate the aircraft's various functionalities until they reach the Final Operational Capability (FOC).
