Spanish Eurofighters eye the Russians at 300 meters

Spain takes over rotating command of NATO's Baltic air-policing mission
Defense Minister: "We're not here to create problems, we're here to avoid them"

About 3,200 kilometers separate the Morón de la Frontera base outside Seville and the Ämari Air Base in Estonia, not to mention around 30 degrees in temperature.

Nevertheless, the Baltic republic's brutal -15ºC weather has not hampered Spanish Eurofighter Typhoons from their duties protecting the region's airspace. Planes from Group 11 of the Spanish Air Force have been in control of NATO's Baltic Air Policing Mission (BAPM), based in Ämari, since January 1 and will continue there until May 4.

So far, the Eurofighters have conducted 108 patrols, clocking up nearly 200 hours of flight time. Only one flight had to be canceled because of technical problems.

Eurofighters have conducted 108 patrols, clocking up nearly 200 hours of flight time

"It has been better than we thought," said Lt. Col. Enrique Fernández Ambel, who is heading the team of 115 Spanish officers of the Ambar detachment.

But the fears are real and the tension exists. NATO is concerned that the conflict may spill over from Ukraine, where the Kiev government has been fighting pro-Russian separatists.

Along the icy waters of the Baltic, two old Cold War adversaries can look directly into each others' eyes at distances sometimes as close as 300 meters – that is how near Spanish Eurofighters have come to Russian aircraft during the interceptions that have taken place.

These testy encounters have occurred about half-a-dozen times when Russian Ilyushin and Antonov transport planes – modified for spying or electronic warfare – fly from St Petersburg to the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad Oblast, which is sandwiched between Lithuania and Poland.

Although the Russian jets have not violated Baltic airspace, they ignore international air navigation rules by not filing a flight plan, turning off their transponders so they can't be identified, or refusing to communicate with civil aviation authorities.

The Spanish Eurofighters usually intercept and escort them under the orders of NATO's Combined Air Operations Center (CAOC), based in Uedem, Germany.

Commander Eladio Daniel Leal said the tensest moments usually occur when the alarm goes off and "you just don't know who you are going to encounter, or how they are going to react."

NATO has been helping the Baltic nations patrol their airspace since 2004 as none of them has an air force of their own. Member countries take turns leading the mission.

But since the Ukraine crisis, NATO has beefed up its patrols. Besides the Spanish EF-2000s, fighter jets have also been dispatched from Italy, Poland and Belgium.

In a tense war of nerves, any wrong move can turn into a catastrophe. According to NATO figures, more than 400 interceptions of Russian planes by the Alliance's jets occurred last year – more than double the number in 2013.

Although the Russian jets have not violated Baltic airspace, they ignore international air navigation rules

And each day the Kremlin is getting bolder. Last month, two Russian Tupolev Tu-95 bombers ventured as far as the English Channel, setting off an emergency dispatch of British and French jets.

The Norwegian government released a video that showed how an F-16 fighter nearly collided with one of the Russian bombers. But the biggest risk is that of a commercial jet getting entangled in these dangerous standoffs.

"We're not here to create problems, but instead we're here to avoid them," said Spanish Defense Minister Pedro Morenés, who visited the detachment in Ämari on Wednesday.

The Spanish government is  spending €9 million on having its four Eurofighters take part in the BAPM and hopes to repeat the mission next year.

Norway to deploy F-16s for Baltic air policing

By Gareth Jennings, London - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly | April 22, 2015

The Royal Norwegian Air Force (RNoAF) is to send four of its Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon combat aircraft to participate in the NATO Baltic Air Policing Mission from May, national media said on 23 March.

The F-16AM fighters will deploy from their homebase at Ørland to either Siauliai Airbase in Lithuania or Malbork in Poland, from where they will undertake air policing in partnership with three other nations for four months (besides the Norwegian F-16s, it has also been disclosed that four Eurofighter Typhoons of the UK Royal Air Force will be based at Amari Airbase in Estonia for the mission).

As well as sending its combat aircraft and 70 pilots and support personnel to the region, the RNoAF will also dispatch three liaison officers to the Karmelava military base in Lithuania, according to the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK).

The Baltic Air Policing Mission began in 2004 as a temporary measure to safeguard the airspace of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania until they developed their own air defence capabilities. However, in 2012 NATO declared the mission to be permanent.

The mission is currently in its 37th rotation, led by four Italian Air Force Typhoons at Siauliai Airbase; and supported by four Polish MiG-29 'Fulcrum' fighters at the same location; four Spanish Typhoons at Amari Airbase; and four Belgian Lockheed Martin F-16s at Malbork. To date, 16 NATO nations have taken part in the mission.

The 'enhanced' Baltic Air Policing Mission now being undertaken was stood up in May 2014 in response to Russia's annexation of Crimea and the crisis with Ukraine, and will continue to at least the end of 2015.

Norway takes the lead in NATO's Baltic Air Policing mission

April 30, 2015

Norway will assume lead responsibility for NATO's air policing mission over the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania on Friday (1 May 2015). The United Kingdom will also rejoin the mission while Italy and Belgium will continue their participation. A handover ceremony is taking place on Thursday (30 April 2015) at Šiauliai airbase in Lithuania, where Italy will formally transfer lead responsibility for the mission to Norway.

Allies take up the air patrols for a four-month rotation. Until the end of August, fighter jets from Belgium, Italy, Norway and the United Kingdom will be on duty.  Norway will lead the mission from Šiauliai airbase in Lithuania with four F-16 aircraft. They will be joined in Šiauliai by four Italian Euro-fighter aircraft.  Four British Euro-fighter aircraft will be based at Ämari airbase in Estonia while Belgium will provide four F-16 jets based at Malbork airbase in Poland.

NATO has been protecting the Baltic skies since 2004, when Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania joined the Alliance. The mission helps NATO's Baltic Allies who do not have fighter aircraft of their own guard their airspace. In response to Russia's aggression against Ukraine, NATO's air-policing mission was enhanced with additional aircraft last spring.

NATO's Baltic Air Policing aircraft frequently intercept Russian fighters and bombers flying near Baltic States. In 2014, NATO scrambled its planes more than 150 times in response to Russian air activity over the Baltics, four times more than in 2013.

NATO to scale back enhanced Baltic Air Policing Mission

Gareth Jennings, London - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly | August 4, 2015

NATO is to halve the number of combat aircraft it is committing to the Baltic Air Policing Mission despite a recent upsurge in interceptions of Russian military aircraft transiting the region, an alliance spokesperson confirmed to IHS Jane's on 4 August.

The current 'enhanced' mission made up of 16 aircraft from four nations is to be reduced to eight aircraft from two nations from September, even though Russian military air activity in the region saw NATO fighters intercept record numbers of aircraft in the closing days of July, chief of media operations Lieutenant Colonel Jay Janzen said.

"NATO will have eight aircraft assigned to the mission as of 1 September, and these aircraft will be based at both Siauliai [Airbase] Base in Lithuania and Amari [Airbase] Base in Estonia. We currently have 16 [aircraft at Siauliai, Amari, and Malbork in Poland], which is well above the military requirement. NATO's military authorities assess that eight aircraft is currently sufficient to protect Baltic airspace. Moreover, this is still double the number before the start of the Russia-Ukraine crisis [in early 2014]. Prior to the crisis, the mission normally had four aircraft for each rotation, all based at Siauliai in Lithuania," he said.

According to Lt Col Janzen, Hungary and Germany will provide the first reduced rotation, with Saab Gripen and Eurofighter Typhoon jets being based at Siauliai and Amari respectively (while the mission will no longer be flown out of Malbork, that base remains available to NATO). This rotation will last the usual four months, and will run through to the end of December. The colonel declined to say if the eight-aircraft mission will be the new norm, except to say that the alliance continues to assess the political and military situation with regard to Russia and will plan accordingly.

While the headline numbers show a reduction in the mission, Lt Col Janzen was keen to stress that eight aircraft and two nations was always the NATO requirement for the enhanced air policing mission in light of Russia's annexation of Crimea and continued support for separatists in Eastern Ukraine, and that the alliance had been flying double this number only because they were offered by member nations.

Although NATO recently announced that fighters from the current rotation of Belgium, Italy, Norway, and the United Kingdom had intercepted some of the largest numbers of Russian fighters seen flying through the Baltic region since the end of the Cold War, Lt Col Janzen insisted that eight alliance fighters are more than enough to deal with the type and scale of the threat currently posed.

NATO has launched more than 250 scrambles against Russian aircraft so far this year over Europe, of which 120 have taken place over the Baltic region. With the alliance having conducted some 400 interceptions over Europe for the whole of 2014, the numbers being flown so far suggest that 2015 will surpass this figure by some margin.

Spain and Belgium prepare to take on Baltic policing duties

By Beth Stevenson, London | 05 January 2016

On 7 January, Spain will take the lead role for the next four-month, NATO-led Baltic Air Policing (BAP) rotation, as it deploys four Eurofighters to Šiauliai air base in Lithuania.

The BAP mission provides fighters to NATO nations Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, which do not have their own combat aircraft, primarily in light of the alliance's tensions with Russia. Hungary has led the activity since August 2015, using its Saab Gripens. Spain will take on this role, while Belgian air force Lockheed Martin F-16s will take over from German air force Eurofighters that have been based at Amari air base in Estonia, in a secondary BAP role.

NATO's BAP mission began in 2004 and this will be the 40th rotation of the effort. The mission used to include the alliance also stationing assets in Latvia and Poland, but the current 39th rotation saw the number of deployed aircraft reduced to a combined eight, from a previous high of 16.

Geoffrey Lee/Eurofighter

The four Spanish Eurofighters are allocated to the 14th Wing, based at Albacete air base, while two F-16s from the 10th Tactical Wing at Kleine-Brogel air base and another two from the 2nd Tactical Wing at Florennes will make up the Belgian detachment.

This is the third time Spain has participated in the BAP mission, and the second where it will lead activity from Šiauliai. Belgium is making its fifth commitment to the NATO duty.

Flightglobal's Fleets Analyzer database shows Spain as having 42 Eurofighters in service, plus 23 more on order, while Belgium has a fleet of 59 F-16s.

Dutch F-16s arrive in Lithuania to take over Baltic air policing mission

Gareth Jennings, London - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly - 03 January 2017

A contingent of Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon combat aircraft and personnel arrived at Siauliai Airbase in Lithuania on 2 January to assume the lead for NATO's Baltic Air Policing (BAP) mission.

Four F-16s and more than 120 personnel from the Leeuwarden and Vokel bases in the Netherlands arrived in Lithuania to relieve a contingent of French Air Force Dassault Mirage 2000s from 5 January. The Dutch F-16s will be supported in their mission by four German Air Force Eurofighter Typhoons that are based at Amari Airbase in Estonia, and which are being extended for a second four-month rotation.

Some 43 rotations have now been conducted since the NATO mission was launched in 2004. This will be the third time that the RNLAF has participated in the NATO BAP mission to protect the airspaces of the former Soviet republics of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, having previously undertaken the role in 2005 and 2014.

Royal Netherlands Air Force Do Double Dutch Intercept

By Nicholas Fiorenza in Ares | Jan 27, 2017

Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) F-16s made their first two intercepts Jan. 26 since they were deployed to Lithuania for NATO's Baltic air policing mission at the beginning of the month.

(https://www.defensieforum.nl/Forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Faviationweek.com%2Fsite-files%2Faviationweek.com%2Ffiles%2Fuploads%2F2017%2F01%2F27%2Fsu-24-fencer.jpg&hash=75aef67addc268e171c2bb4b1f22fcfdfd41091c)

The F-16s intercepted a Russian Antonov An-26 Curl and Sukhoi Su-24 Fencer flying north from Kaliningrad in international airspace close to the Baltic states. A flight plan had been filed but the aircraft's transponders were not visible and they were not in contact with air traffic control, which is potentially dangerous, according to the Dutch Ministry of Defense.

After intercepting and identifying the Russian aircraft, the Dutch F-16s returned to the Lithuanian air base of Siauliai, where they are on 24-hour quick reaction alert until the end of April.

The Dutch Ministry of Defense has produced a nice (https://www.defensie.nl/actueel/nieuws/2017/01/05/f-16-s-bewaken-luchtruim-baltische-staten) video of the RNLAF mission.

Nederlandse F-16-missie ten einde: tien Russen onderschept

Russische bemanningen, Russische vliegtuigen

At Šiauliai Air Base, Lithuania, the Spanish Air Force will lead the Baltic Air Policing mission with Eurofighter aircraft from 14th Wing stationed  Albacete, Spain. In 2016, the Wing's Eurofighters already conducted the NATO mission here.
Italian Air Force F-35 fighter aircraft from Amendola Air Base, Italy, will for the first time fly out of Ämari Air Base, Estonia, and augment the mission under enhanced Air Policing. This first fifth-generation aircraft deployment shows how NATO's air forces are adapting to the mission by employing advanced technology for enduring missions.

From mid-May to September, the Turkish Air Force is scheduled to deploy their F-16 fighter aircraft and approx. 80 personnel from 6th Air Base at Bandirma, Turkey, to Malbork Air Base, Poland; after a deployment to Lithuania in 2006, the Turkish Air Force returns to the region to augment NATO's enhanced Air Policing mission.

Three Allies from the South – Spain, Italy and Turkey – are supporting NATO's Baltic Air Policing in the north demonstrating Alliance cohesion and solidarity. The Alliance is ready to continue providing security to the region through vigilance and deterrence.

ITALY LAUNCHES FIRST INTERCEPT WITH F-35 SUPPORTING NATO BALTIC AIR POLICING

MAY 14 2021

RAMSTEIN, Germany - In the early morning of May 14, the Italian Air Force F-35 pilots deployed to Ämari Air Base, Estonia, supporting NATO's Baltic Air Policing mission, executed their first intercept since they arrived in early May.

The Combined Air Operations Centre at Uedem, Germany, recorded an unidentified track in the Baltic Sea ordered flying from mainland Russia to Kaliningrad and ordered an alert scramble for the F-35s mission to identify that track. Upon take- off, the Italian NATO aircraft approached and identified a Russian An-12 transport aircraft executing the first ever intercept byan F-35 under NATO orders in the Baltic Sea.

The Russian military transport plane was flying over international waters close to the Estonian coast; it was not on a flight plan and not sending a transponder signal causing a potential risk to other airspace users. Upon completing the identification, the Italian fighter aircraft returned to Ämari Air Base.

On May 3, an Italian Air Force F-35 detachment took over the augmenting role in NATO's Baltic Air Policing mission from the German Air Force Eurofighter detachment. Archive photo by Sigrid Pukk.

"The integration of the F-35 advanced capabilities demonstrates how the Allies bring their cutting-edge technology and support NATO's enduring defensive mission in the region," said Brigadier General Andrew Hansen, Deputy Chief of Staff Operations at Allied Air Command. "The mission in the Baltics epitomises NATO cohesion and solidarity; at Ämari, the deployed Allied fighter detachments have enabled us at AIRCOM to flexibly conduct the mission and at the same time assure the Baltic populations of NATO's commitment," General Hansen added.

Since 2004 Allies and NATO have collectively secured the airspace above Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania; starting ten years later, in 2014, 22 NATO fighter detachments have seamlessly operated out of Ämari with the Italian F-35s being the latest to safeguard the Baltic NATO skies.

NATO Air Policing exercise Ramstein Alloy takes place in Estonia

Italian F-35s took to the Baltic skies this week (29-30 June 2021) as part of a NATO Air Policing exercise. Ramstein Alloy, as it's known, tests procedures, drills and processes for the quick-reaction forces that safeguard the skies in the Baltic region. The F-35s, which are a 5th generation aircraft, were also joined by Estonian L-39 Albatross jets, the NATO E-3A AWACS aircraft as well as F/A-18 Hornets from partner country Finland. They practised simulated scenarios such as communications loss and slow mover intercepts. Ramstein Alloy is a recurrent exercise that runs several time in a year. The 2021 exercise series coincides with the 60th anniversary of the formation of NATO's Air Policing mission. Footage includes various shots of Italian F-35 aircraft taking off and landing at Amari Air Base in Estonia and conducting interception training in the Baltic skies, as well as interviews with an Italian F-35 pilot, the Chief of Staff of the Estonia Air Force and the Deputy Commander of the NATO E-3A Component.

This third Air Policing detachment in the region – in addition to the Spanish Air Force at Šiauliai, Lithunia, and the Italian Air Force at Ämari, Estonia – is an uptake of additional aircraft offers made by the Allies. The deployment of another additional fighter detachment to Malbork, POL, takes place under the auspices of the existing NATO enhanced Air Policing posture introduced in 2014. The deployment underlines the solidarity and cohesion among NATO Allies and the collective commitment to deterrence and defence.
Sixty years after introducing the enduring NATO Air Policing mission, deployments like that of the Turkish F-16s to Malbork show our readiness and responsiveness and NATO's continuing air agility, capability and adaptation.

Three Allies from the south – Spain, Italy and Turkey – are supporting NATO's Baltic Air Policing in the north demonstrating Alliance cohesion and solidarity. Deployed in the Baltic region, they will work with each other and the hosting air forces to enhance cooperation and interoperability.

NATO Fighters Intercepted Two Rare Russian Il-22PP 'Mute' EW Aircraft Over The Baltics For The Very First Time

The Il-22PP Special Mission Aircraft were intercepted over the Baltic Sea for the very first time.
Some pretty interesting close encounters between NATO fighters supporting BAP (Baltic Air Policing) mission and Russian aircraft flying in international airspace close to the airspace of the Baltic States took place on Jul. 29, 2021: overall, two Il-22PP "Mute" Electronic Warfare Aircraft, one Su-24 Fencer and an Il-76 Candid transport were tracked, intercepted and identified in the same area as they were on their way to Russia from Kaliningrad Oblast.

According to NATO, NATO's Combined Air Operations Centre at Uedem in Germany launched the allied fighter aircraft to intercept and identify them. The Russian aircraft did not have flight plans nor transmit transponder codes, and thus posed a potential risk to civilian flights.

The intercept mission was carried out by Spanish Air Force Eurofighters and Italian Air Force F-35s, both on QRA (Quick Reaction Alert) duty in the Baltic region.

Noteworthy, it was the very first time NATO intercepted the Il-22PP Porubshchik (NATO designation "Mute") in that region. The "electronic escort" aircraft made its first appearance in 2017, during the celebrations of the 105th anniversary of the Russian air force over Kubinka. According to Piotr Butowski, the aircraft is a SIGINT (Signal Intelligence) and stand-off jamming platform, based on a converted Il-22 "Coot-B" aircraft (a command post and radio relay aircraft based on the Il-18D airliner).

According to Mikhail Khodorenok, a retired colonel and military analyst of the Gazeta.ru online newspaper, the Il-22PP was a necessity for the military when no other options were available:

"At one time, a few more options were considered: AN-140 and AN-158 planes with turbojet engines as well as the Tu-214," he told RBTH. "However, at the time of the formation of the 'defense procurement' in 2009, none of these models were not yet fully ready to be equipped with the latest electronic warfare [EW] systems."

"Of course, this is not an ideal solution," he added, explaining why the new weapon has been placed on a "trusty old horse." "However, for lack of a better option, a choice had to be made – either to stay without the EW aircraft, or to mount the equipment on the tested wings."

While it might be a gap filler until  it is replaced by a more modern aircraft in the future, the Il-22PP aircraft (also nicknamed "Fridge" by the Russians – because it's large and white..), is equipped with antennas so that it scans radio signals in the area of its activity and selectively jam those on which enemy aircraft, drones or air defense systems work.

Zo is inzet gegarandeerd.

Volkel (Southern Lightning). (Onze Luchtmacht december/januari)

Hoe lang is zo'n Baltic Air Policing missie, 3 of 6 maanden?

Komend jaar moeten  ongeveer acht stuks hun first flight maken.

8 Nederlandse F-35's in Polen onder NAVO-commando vanwege oorlog in Oekra?ne

Nieuwsbericht | 27-01-2023 | 14:03

Zo is inzet gegarandeerd.
