The U.S. Army has issued a solicitation for a new combat rifle that would increase lethality in soldiers.

"The Army has identified a potential gap in the capability of ground forces and infantry to penetrate body armor using existing ammunition," the solicitation read.

"To address this operational need, the Army is looking for an Interim Combat Service Rifle (ICSR) that is capable of defeating emerging threats," the solicitation added. "The Government has a requirement to acquire a commercial 7.62mm ICSR to field with the M80A1 Enhanced Performance Round (EPR) to engage and defeat protected and unprotected threats. The ultimate objective of the program is to acquire and field a 7.62mm ICSR that will increase Soldier lethality."

The Army will be moving to a 7.62-millimeter rifle and leaving behind the M-4 Carbine, as they believe the 5.56-millimeter round is too small to use on targets with modern body armor.

The rifle has to be capable of semi- and fully automatic fire, weigh less than 12 pounds, fire at a range of 600 meters, be able to attach a suppressor, have a collapsible buttstock, and have a rail for attaching lasers and optics.

In addition, the 7.62-millimeter ammunition weighs more than the 5.56-millimeter ammunition, meaning that infantrymen would have to carry more weight.

According to the solicitation, 50,000 rifles could be purchased for the program; however, the number is not set.

US Army integrating night vision, thermal optics for weapons targeting

The US Army in the next two years is scheduled to begin delivering new soldier- and weapons-borne optics to ease target acquisition for riflemen.

Family of Weapon Sights – Individual (FWS-I) is a weapon-mounted long-wave infrared sensor that provides imagery, including a reticle boresighted, to the shooter.

Notably, it can be wirelessly connected to the soldier's Enhanced Night Vision Goggle (ENVG) III to transmit the weapon's imagery with reticle within the ENVG III image. The goggle has a 40-degree field of view and the sight an 18-degree field of view, so ultimately the user gets a wider field of view than if looking through a weapon optic only, Major Kevin Smith, assistant programme manager for FWS-I and RTA, told Jane's.

US Army Considers Replacing M249 SAW With Bigger, Badder Suppressed Machine Gun
Armed Forces Weekly   6 hours ago 0 5   1 minute read
FacebookTwitterPinterestReddit

The M249 SAW has been a common sight on the battlefield for nearly 50 years. Originally designed in the 1970's as a lightweight replacement to the M60, the military was thrilled at the idea that the gun could use the same ammunition as the rest of the M16-equipped squad.

But that was back when engagement distances were relatively short, and weight of fire was more important than long range accuracy. Now that the battlefields of today have moved out of the claustrophobic jungles of Vietnam and into the wide open spaces of the Middle East it seems that the military is looking for something with a little more accuracy and long distance stopping power.

The Next Generation Squad Automatic Rifle (NGSAR) is a single incremental program to meet future force warfighting needs. It is the planned replacement for the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW) in Brigade Combat Teams (BCT) and select support units during the next decade. It will combine the firepower and range of a machine gun with the precision and ergonomics of a carbine, yielding capability improvements in accuracy, range, and lethality. The weapon will be lightweight and fire lightweight ammunition with improved lethality. The NGSAR will help to reduce the heavy load that burdens Soldiers and that has a significant negative impact on their mobility, survivability, and firing accuracy. Soldiers will employ the NGSAR against close and extended range targets in all terrains and conditions. The NGSAR will be compatible with and dependent on legacy optics and night vision devices to meet required capabilities. It will also be compatible with the Small Arms Fire Control system currently in development and possess back-up sights. It is anticipated the NGSAR support concept will be consistent with (comparable to) that of the predecessor M249 SAW involving the Army two level field and sustainment maintenance system. The NGSAR will achieve overmatch by killing stationary, and suppressing moving, threats out to 600 meters (T), and suppressing all threats to a range of 1200 meters (O).

Noticeably absent: any specification of ammunition. It says the ammo needs to be lighter than the ammunition currently in use, but it doesn't specify the caliber.

Bijna 50 jaar in dienst?

Could we be seeing a .22WMR machine gun in the field sometime soon? Probably not. But it would be interesting to see if one of the participants decides to wildcat something specifically to meet the spec.

The notice goes on to give the specific requirements that the gun must meet, including:

That last one is particularly notable. The M249 was designed to be compact, not quiet. For this new gun, the specification requires both a compact and quiet package with an included suppressor.

We should start seeing the first hints of what companies are proposing to fill this role within the next few months, as the military is holding an industry day at the end of July to go over the proposal in more detail. My bet is that 1) FN will submit a variant of their venerable SCAR design, 2) Colt will once again half-assedly bastardize an AR-15 platform rifle to fit the requirement while trying to spend as little money on R&D as possible, and 3) H&K will throw the MG5 out there again.

The wildcard here is SIG SAUER, who re-engineered their company specifically to fulfill contracts like these that require the vendor to supply both the firearm and the ammunition. I can't imagine they'd sit on the sidelines for this, but I also don't see anything in their arsenal ready to meet the requirement. Stay tuned.

Germany's defence procurement office (Bundesamt für Ausrüstung, Informationstechnik und Nutzung der Bundeswehr: BAAINBw) has announced a tender to replace the German Army's G36 assault rifles.

Under the programme named System Sturmgewehr Bundeswehr (SSB), the German armed forces are planning to sign a seven-year framework agreement (which could be extended) for the manufacture and delivery of around 120,000 new rifles and associated accessories worth an estimated EUR245 million (USD266 million). Part of the contract covers the provision of spare parts and repairs.

The actual number of weapons ordered in the framework agreement are to be set in the third quarter of 2020 after the new rifles have been successfully tested.

SOCOM searches for 7.62mm conversion kit

For example, in November, the Netherlands Maritime Special Operations Force (NL MARSOF) announced plans to procure 200 Sig Sauer MCX .300 BLK carbines (pictured) in order to replace its existing inventory of Heckler and Koch 5.56mm x 45mm HK416 rifles.

SOCOM searches for 7.62mm conversion kit

A US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) solicitation calling for the design of a Personal Defense Weapon (PDW) could have serious implications for the future of the standard NATO 5.56mm x 45mm calibre assault rifle across the special operations community, defence sources have explained to Shephard.

According to the 9 March request for information (RFI), the Tampa-based command is seeking a conversion kit for the 5.56mm x 45mm Colt Defense M4A1 carbine in order to upgrade it to a .300 BLK cailbre (7.62mm x 35mm) weapon system.

The news follows years of ongoing debate in which special operations forces (SOF) have considered the evolution from 5.56mm to alternative calibres including 6.5mm, 6.8mm and .300 BLK ammunition.

Despite retaining the option to alternate between such weapon systems for specialist tasks and roles, sources explained how such a wholesale change in calibre across entire assault rifle inventories had been avoided due to the vast costs associated with such a change.

The USSOCOM requirement features an upper receiver and buttstock conversion kit, which would allow an operator to switch between 5.56mm and .300 BLK calibres within a few minutes with the additional benefit of the added integration of a suppressor, the solicitation reads.

Despite being tagged as a PDW development, USSOCOM's requirement falls in line with similar efforts across the international special operations community where force elements are demanding enhanced lethality and stopping power particularly relevant to close quarter combat situations.

The MCX, according to defence sources, is also being considered by the Royal Netherlands Army's Special Forces Regiment (KCT) as well as the German Army's Special Forces Command (KSK).

[/i][/b]According to USSOCOM's solicitation, the PDW requirement must comprise a non-permanent upgrade solution with the M4A1 weighing no more than 5.5lbs and measuring no more than 26inches when fully extended.

'The weapon shall be fully functional when collapsed or folded. Kit should include a 5.56mm barrel that can be changed from .300 BLK to 5.56mm in less than 3 minutes. Accuracy shall be 3.0 MOA (T), 2.0 MOA (O) @100 yds. and 5.0 MOA (T), 3.0 MOA (O) @ 300 yds. both in .300 BLK supersonic,' the solicitation added. Deadline for responses is 10 April 2017, it concluded.

Defence sources explained to Shephard how most of the small arms manufacturers in the US will be capable of supporting such a programme with participants likely to include Sig Sauer, Heckler & Koch, M4A1 designer Colt Defense and FN Herstal USA.

The news follows USSOCOM's interest in the development of Suppressed Upper Receiver Group (SURG) technology, designed to reduce 'mirage effects', noise and dust effects during operations in confined spaces.

However, this option would comprise an upper receiver with floating barrel and permanently integrated suppressor, which has become a signature piece of equipment for the international special operations community in recent years.
