CitaatPentagon mulling new submarine- or surface-based nuclear cruise missile

The Pentagon is mulling either a new submarine- or surface ship-based nuclear cruise missile and low-yield nuclear ballistic missiles in response to Russian and Chinese capabilities, according to the top US nuclear officer.

The US Navy formerly had a nuclear-armed submarine-launched cruise missile (SLCM), the nuclear Tomahawk land-attack cruise missile, but this was retired by the 2010 Nuclear Posture Review. In the latest 2018 review, the Pentagon said it will "immediately begin efforts to restore this capability by initiating a capability study leading to an Analysis of Alternatives" to rapidly develop a modern SLCM.

"The threat is from both Russia and China that drives the need for the sea-launched cruise missile," General John Hyten, head of US Strategic Command (STRATCOM), told the Senate Armed Services Committee on 20 March.

CitaatIsraeli submarine chief outlines future requirements

The first of a batch of three new Israeli Navy submarines is expected to be operational in 2030, a senior naval official has told Jane's .

Colonel G (full name withheld), head of the Israeli Navy's Submarines Department, said he expected the navy to sign a procurement contract with Germany's ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) in 2020. "This will be followed by eight years of production," he added.

The German government delayed approving the deal in July 2017 due to an Israeli police investigation into possible improper conduct and corruption in the decision to purchase the three submarines, but approved it in October even though the probe continues. Berlin reportedly added a condition reserving the right to cancel the deal if there are developments in the case.

This does not appear to have slowed the pace of the Future Israeli Navy Submarine (FINS) programme. "In terms of schedule, we are right on time," Col G said. "If I want a submarine to get here at end of the next decade, I have to start building in 2020. We don't have much time to waste."

The three new submarines will replace Israel's three original Dolphin-class boats that were commissioned in 1999–2000 and serve alongside the second-generation boats that have been built by TKMS, the third of which is expected to arrive in Israel later this year.

Col G indicated that the original boats could be sold to another country. "It's too soon to know what we will do with our first three submarines. They have at least 10 years of operations and many hours at sea left," he said.

ASC & Saab to Upgrade Australian Navy Collins-class Submarine

Australia's Federal Defence Industry Minister Christopher Pyne announced that ASC and Saab Australia were awarded a contract to supply an updated Integrated Ship Control Management and Monitoring System (ISCMMS) for four Royal Australian Navy Collins class submarines.

ASC Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Stuart Whiley said, "this project demonstrates the high level of local industry content and collaboration in supporting Australia's sovereign submarine capability, the Collins Class fleet."

"ASC built the Collins Class submarine fleet and is responsible for sustaining and upgrading the submarines. We look forward to working closely with Saab to complete the second phase of this major upgrade program."

Phase one of the project saw the updated ISCMMS software and hardware developed by Saab and integrated into HMAS Collins by ASC, with HMAS Waller scheduled for later this year. The four remaining Collins class submarines will then be upgraded.

ISCMMS allows the submarine crew to centrally control many submarine systems, fully integrating the management of propulsion, trim, power generation and ship services on board the submarine.
