Marine Corps Prepositioning Program-Norway Ship offload   (opslag van USMC materieel in bunkers)

MCPP-N Modernization in Norway

Vehicles and equipment are staged at the designated offload pier during a pre-planned Single Ship Movement and offload of military equipment from a Maritime Prepositioning Force ship in the Trøndelag region of Norway. U.S. Marines from 2nd Marine Logistics Group out of Camp Lejeune, NC, in coordination with their Norwegian counterparts, are modernizing some of the equipment currently stored within six caves as a part of the Marine Corps Prepositioning Program-Norway by placing approximately 350 containers of gear and nearly 400 pieces of heavy rolling stock into the storage caves.

Specific equipment which will greatly increase the program's readiness includes M1A1 Main Battle Tanks, Tank Retrievers, Armored Breeching Vehicles, Amphibious Assault Vehicles, Expanded Capacity Vehicle (ECV) Gun Trucks and several variants of the MTVR 7 ½ ton trucks. Planning for this equipment refresh began in the spring of 2010. Marines and contractors from Blount Island Command in Jacksonville, Fla. and Marine Corps Forces Europe and Africa are also in Norway to ensure the operation is conducted in a safe and timely manner.

US To Review Europe Troop Presence To Reassure Allies

The United States will review its troop presence in Europe as it seeks to reassure allies they will not be left unprotected after Russia's intervention in Ukraine, US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Wednesday.

President Barack Obama's $1 billion US 'reassurance plan' for Eastern Europe announced Tuesday is a key part of such efforts and will involve Washington "reviewing the US force presence in Europe," Hagel said.

"In light of the new regional security environment, it would be irresponsible for us not to," he added, in an apparent reference to Ukraine.

US Deploying B-52s to Europe

The US Air Force plans to temporarily deploy heavy bombers capable of delivering nuclear weapons to Europe one day after President Obama announced he would increase the US military presence in the region.

Two B-52 Stratofortresses bombers from Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, and one B-52 from Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota — currently operating from Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota — arrived at Royal Air Force Fairford, England, on Wednesday, where airmen will train and integrate with US and allied military forces in the region, the Air Force said in a news release.

"During this deployment, which will span approximately two weeks, the multi-role heavy bombers will conduct training flights in the U.S. European Command area of operations, providing opportunities for aircrews to sharpen skills in several key operational sets and become familiar with airbases and operations in the region," the release states.

The move comes amid Russian aggression in Eastern Europe where Moscow has annexed Crimea from Ukraine. Tens of thousands of Russian troops are also said to be massed along the border with Ukraine.

Obama on Tuesday called for Congress to approve $1 billion dollars to boost a rotational U.S. troops presence in Europe.

In March, the US repositioned F-15 and F-16 fighters to Lithuania and Poland.
