(https://www.defensieforum.nl/Forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fhushkit.files.wordpress.com%2F2014%2F02%2Ff-35.jpg&hash=d45ad2ba47d969ccc5f00c5a6c02a1c5ee706db1)

zie:  http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/XCOR_Aerospace

zie: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HOTOL
zie:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saenger_(spacecraft)

How Russia's S-400 Makes the F-35 Obsolete   ( misschien hier niet helemaal on-topic, maar wel van invloed op gebruik van bommenwerpers )

The sale of the powerful S-400 surface-to-air missile systems to China not only marks another milestone in Russia-China relations, it is a remarkable example of how a comparatively inexpensive weapon can make a trillion dollar project obsolescent before it even gets off the ground.

It's not often that a relatively inexpensive air defence weapon is able to make a trillion dollar fighter programme obsolete. But the $500 million S-400 missile system has done precisely that to America's brand new F-35 stealth fighter.

In November 2014 Moscow and Beijing inked a $3 billion agreement for the supply of six battalions of S-400 anti-aircraft/anti-missile systems that will significantly boost China's air defence capability against the US and its allies in the Western Pacific.

With a tracking range of 600 km and the ability to hit targets 400 km away at a blistering speed of 17,000 km an hour – faster than any existing aircraft–the S-400 is a truly scary weapon if you are facing its business end. First deployed by Russia in 2010, each S-400 battalion has eight launchers, a control centre, radar and 16 missiles available as reloads.

Unlike the overhyped US Patriot missile that turned out to be a dud in battle, the S-400 was designed to create the daddy of Iron Domes. "Given its extremely long range and effective electronic warfare capabilities, the S-400 is a game-changing system that challenges current military capabilities at the operational level of war," Paul Giarra, president, Global Strategies and Transformation, told Defense News. The S-400 will have the "effect of turning a defensive system into an offensive system, and extend China's A2/AD (anti-access/area-denial) umbrella over the territory of American allies and the high seas."

But first a bit of background.

The S-400 was developed to defend Russian air space and a few hundred kilometers further against missiles and aircraft of all types, including stealth. Because it is a highly potent and accurate weapon that can tip the balance of power in any war theatre, Moscow has long resisted the temptation of exporting even its older iteration, the S-300, to troubled allies Syria and Iran.

An S-300 missile fired from, say, Damascus will blow away an aircraft over central Tel Aviv in about 107 seconds, giving the Israelis just enough time to say their prayers. It is precisely because the S-series missile systems can so dramatically upset the military balance that Israel has pressured Russia against introducing it into the Middle East tinderbox. Israel has also warned it would go after Syrian S-300 batteries with everything it's got.

However, China's case is different because the chances of another country daring to take a shot at the Chinese are next to zero. This development is really bad news for the F-35.

Russia and the US have traditionally adopted different military strategies. During the Cold War the US relied upon carrier-based aircraft to project power in the Western Pacific, and the strategy continues today. The Russians on the other hand decided these floating airfields were easy targets for their shore-based long-range aviation and anti-ship cruise missiles.

If it came to war, waves of long-range bombers such as the Tu-95M Backfire would take off from safe bases deep in continental Russia, fire their powerful cruise missiles from safe stand-off distances and blast the carriers out of the water. The Russian pilots would then head home to watch the damage on CNN! (end of excerpt)

Uiteindelijk kregen we de Sanders AN/ALQ-126A track breaker stoorzender.

Technologisch betere ECM is noodzaak.

Vintage Boeing B-52 gets new long-range Lockheed cruise missile

The Boeing B-52H is the vintage bomber that just won't quit, and now the Cold War-era "Stratofortress" is being outfitted with one of America's newest and longest-range conventional cruise missiles.

Lockheed Martin has been put on contract to arm the 54-year-old aircraft – which has outlived many of those who predicted its retirement – with the extended-range Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Weapon (JASSM) under a $9.1 million contract announced earlier this month.

In a statement to Flightglobal, LM director of long-range strike systems Jason Denney confirms that the B-52 will be updated to carry the turbofan engine-powered cruise missile internally on a new digitised rotary launcher and externally on its pylons.

The bomber has long carried conventional cruise missiles, namely the non-nuclear derivative of the AGM-86 "ALCM" that has an unclassified range of 600nm and is being retired as supplies run low.

Boeing B-52s can carry up to 20 nuclear-armed Air-Launched Cruise Missiles (ALCMs) and by 2018 will probably be carrying a similar number of smarter, non-nuclear Lockheed Martin JASSM-ERs.

Already equipped to carry the shorter-range baseline JASSM missile on its pylons, adding the extended range variant more than doubles the bomber's JASSM strike distance to 500nm (926km). That allows lumbering, non-stealthy B-52H to punch out targets while keeping clear of hazardous air defence systems well into the future.

According to Lockheed, the B-52 has only ever captive-carried the JASSM-ER during operational testing, and the bomber now joins the Lockheed F-16 and soon the Boeing F-15E on the integration to-do list. The weapon is already deployed on the Boeing/Rockwell B-1B. B-52 integration will wrap up in 2018, as will the project to arm the F-16.

"F-15E integration will be next in line," says Denney. "The expansion of the JASSM-ER employment aircraft set will significantly enhance the US warfighter's first-day, first-strike capabilities."

The baseline JASSM missile has been in serial production for over a decade but production recently switched to the new double-range JASSM-ER (500nm unclassified).

The beefing up of Stratofortress weaponry for conventional warfighting comes as the air force removes nuclear weapons from dozens of B-52s previously assigned to the strategic deterrence mission to achieve compliance with new strategic arms limitations agreed with Russia.

The air force currently plans to retire the supersonic B-1B and the B-52H in the 2040s as their Long-Range Strike Bomber (LRS-B) replacement steps in.

JASSM-ER takes advantage of several concurrent digital upgrades that will allow every B-52 to carry smart weapons internally for the first time and on its pylons. The Boeing-led Combat Network Communications Technology improvement will further allow B-52s to update their missions plans via satellite and retarget weapons in flight – as most other combat aircraft have been doing for decades.

The B-52's rotary launcher, seen here carrying up to eight ALCM cruise missiles, is being upgraded to carry fully digital smart weapons and decoys.

MBDA's new FlexiS concept envisions users being able to select weapon effects from modular missile components that could be mated on board ship as required by each mission.

Key Points
New concept envisioned as families of missiles in three calibres
Emerging technologies including inter-missile communication and collaboration
MBDA unveiled the CVW102 FlexiS fully modular air-launched missile concept as its 2015 Concept Visions innovation at the 2015 Paris Air Show

Concept Visions is an annual MBDA group-level initiative - now in its sixth year - to define a weapon system to address evolving and perceived challenges over the next 20 years. The initiative is designed to exploit research, development and innovation enterprises, and identify and leverage emerging and prototype technologies, across the company and its supply chain to evolve the concept weapon.

Underpinning the evolution of the FlexiS concept are three key drivers: maintaining technological edge, having the appropriate quantity of equipment and equipment types to address the operational target set, and being able to manage the uncertainty of the conflict type that might develop. The scenario the company uses to typify these challenges is 'Carrier Strike' - which, through sustained deployment, faces inherent challenges of replenishment and storage of equipment stocks to address different emerging conflict scenarios.

The CVW 102 FlexiS concept is envisaged as a missile family with a common central airframe, incorporating a modular architecture enabling different subsystems to be swapped in theatre to tailor the missile to meet a specific mission requirement. FlexiS is "a flexible system that allows the customer to assemble the weapon system as they need from a set of configurations that MBDA has qualified," Ed Dodwell, head of Concept Visions at MBDA told IHS Jane's .

Dodwell said that in line with MBDA's existing missile portfolio, his team defined three calibre types within FlexiS, each of which encompasses different sets of capabilities: a 180 mm calibre in two lengths - 1.8 m and 3 m; a 350 mm calibre - 3.5 m in length; and a 450 mm calibre - 5.5 m long. However, he noted "as the family that delivered the most breadth and capability for Concept Visions, this year we focused only on the development of the 180 mm calibre as the exemplifying family for FlexiS."

The 180 mm calibre family has been exemplified by five configurations, in air-to-air and air-to-ground roles, with the 1.8 m variant mostly earmarked for air-to-ground and the 3m variant air-to-air - although Dodwell noted that within the flexible architecture concept there remains the opportunity to mix and match between both.

The configurations include: a mid-range strike and an anti-tank missile, both 1.8 m long; a very short-range air-to-air (AAM) missile, also 1.8 m, designed to address less complex air threats such as mid-altitude UAVs, without the need to deploy higher cost AAMs; a 3 m long-range air-to-air missile - using the air-turbo-rocket propulsion technology that was looked at in Concept Visions 2013 for the CVS 302 Hoplite weapon - to provide "reasonable range" and a Mach 2+ capability in the air-to-air environment; and finally a short-range re-roleable AAM with a blast fragmentation warhead and full-length rocket motor.

(https://www.defensieforum.nl/Forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.janes.com%2Fimages%2Fassets%2F218%2F52218%2Fp1634190.jpg&hash=6efbe87c1b7b3da8d51cdbcfef7f44139953d329)
FlexiS missiles could be built to conduct a variety of air-to-air and air-to-surface missions at different ranges as dictated by the threat and required aircraft loadouts. Unused missiles could be disassembled and reused in other configurations for future missions. (MBDA)

Dodwell noted that MBDA's propulsion systems subsidiary, Roxel, supported the FlexiS concept with the idea of a modular rocket motor: "You have the same rocket motor for the 1.8 m and 3 m, but for the 3 m you install two more rocket modules at the rear - the idea being that you could quite quickly re-role the very short-range anti-air to be the short range anti-air - by just adding two rocket motor modules and changing the seeker."

Dodwell said that across the missiles within the 180 mm missile family "we have a single launch aerodynamic profile to minimise integration costs. This means that all of the missiles, regardless of their actual capability, are common from the perspective of the platform, and from the perspective of integration. So that vastly reduces the cost delta of each subsequent integration after the first weapon integration. So you are getting a greater breadth of capability installed on your platforms at a much lower cost."

The FlexiS architecture incorporates, and is enabled, through a number of different innovative technologies including: contactless universal interfaces and a common power and communications bus; an advanced composite chassis with wire-in composite processing to allow that contactless interface and common bus to be embedded in the airframe; an intelligent missile self-configuration capability through the weapon configuration and control units which manage the configuration of the assembled modules; and sub-system level health and usage monitoring.

"The concept also allowed us to look at and highlight a number of emerging technologies that will provide capability enhancements: inter-missile communication and collaboration: reactive material warheads; array antenna seekers and variable-speed rocket motors," said Dodwell, adding that concepts for modularised propulsion enable tuneable range and speed. "One of the core benefits of this fully modular architecture is the fact that it allows those emerging technologies, at the point that they become mature, to be incorporated into the architecture as long as they comply with its interfaces and standards.

"So you can now rapidly evolve equipment at sub-system level and introduce it into service via the architecture so it can be qualified with one of the configurations, rather than having to wait for the development of an entire new missile system to get new technologies into service."

"Looking into a bit more detail on some of those enabling technologies," said Dodwell, "the definition of a common power and communications bus with contactless universal interfaces has allowed us to standardise our subsystem modules and the way those modules interface onto the bus. So this really eases assembly of the all up missiles.

"Most of our missiles today are based on what is called a 'star architecture' - each subsystem either has discrete interfaces between subsystems or discrete point-to-point communications back to the weapon computer. For FlexiS, we propose changing that to a bus, the advantage of which is that it allows the module to be installed, then the weapon computer detects and picks up that module, so you can have all those subsystems operating on the bus, giving you a much more open and flexible architecture.

"The bus and the contactless interfaces are then embedded into a common airframe, using wire-in composite processes - the common airframe is made out of novel composite materials - this is a material that is currently being looked at and tested inside MBDA.

"The composite processing and manufacture that we are currently looking at allows a chassis to be assembled that is lighter and takes up less volume than a conventional metal chassis; that can be developed to meet the very strenuous mechanical requirements of both operating in an air-to-air and air-to-ground role - so we have this common chassis that is common to all the different configurations within the FlexiS family.

"The chassis will also include the latest innovations in composite monitoring to guarantee that it is robust and assured throughout its operating life.

"The ability to embed the comms and power bus into the chassis also allows for a significant reduction in the mass and volume of the core missile architecture. So, rather than having to have what we have today - a number of different cabled harnesses inside the airframe - that is all now embedded into the structural airframe itself. We've really freed up a lot of volume inside the airframe, and that allows that simple interface between the modules and the missile so that we can achieve that simple assembly in theatre."

The other key innovation that achieves this level of adaptability is the weapons' configuration and control unit. This unit detects each of the modules that are installed into the airframe and identifies each of the components that are being installed and ensures that the module is an approved subsystem. It also checks that the overall sets of modules installed are of a configuration that has been approved and tested, and that the performance is known of, so that it is effectively a qualified all up missile.

It then loads the correct mission parameters for that configuration of weapon and also loads the module operating software defined for that configuration to optimise the operation of each individual module as they are delivered at the all up missile level and to deliver the overall missile performance.

The modular architecture also enables the introduction of a module that enables direct missile-to-missile collaboration, affording a high degree of flexibility, with the missiles autonomously acting and communicating between themselves, but within a mission planned set of constraints. The idea of this direct interaction between missiles brings the ability to intelligently carry out actions and manoeuvres between a salvo of missiles, or to employ particular tactics that allow it to overcome challenging future missiles. For example, when engaging a highly manoeuvrable air target, one missile could form the chase missile and the other could work an intercept. The communication between those two missiles allows them to determine the point of intercept of that air target and maximise the probability of kill. Also the collaboration between missiles could reduce the number of missiles needed to achieve a successful suppression of enemy air defences, which is currently a high attrition scenario.

Finally, the integration of health and usage monitoring at the module level promises a step change in missile life management. One of the challenges today is the number of flight hours that an individual missile can undertake before it has to be refurbished, and also knowing how much 'real life' that missile actually has left.

The addition of HUMS achieves that in terms of monitoring the real environment the missile has seen - but today it is done at canister-level. "The real innovation for us is pushing that down to a module level, because that maximizes the life of the overall missile, since today, when any subsystem in the missile is lifed [out] the whole missile gets sent back for refurbishment. With a modular HUMS system we know the life of each individual module - you can now simply replace the lifed module, and the missile remains available in theatre - and for us that's a real game changer."

He concluded that "In terms of a specific Carrier Strike role, to make this concept as responsible and reactive as possible, our proposal is to have a fully automated assembly on board the carrier - so it's another reason why we have focused on the carrier, because of the fact that already within the carrier there is a move towards automation of the handling of munitions on board. What we are envisaging for 2035 is an extension on this where you have your common chassis and your modules held in the weapons magazine and those units can autonomously be brought out of the magazine and taken to the weapon assembly area where there is an automated weapon assembly system that has been delivered by MBDA that assembles and checks that the missile is good to go."

PARIS: MBDA unveils modular missile concept

16 JUNE, 2015 BY: BETH STEVENSON PARIS
In an effort to provide the correct balance of air power projection for military operators in future conflict, MBDA is envisioning a modular approach to weapon use.

Introducing its CVW102 Flexis concept at the show, the company is leveraging research and development projects that it is currently working on to provide a future solution for offensive operations, which will allow the operator to configure missiles according to the mission requirement up to the point of use.

This includes a central command unit, a common missile power and communications bus with "universal contactless interfaces" and a common composite chassis that allows for the installation of mission-specific elements, including common standardised diameters. Weapons can then be assembled as required and tailored to particular missions.

The key issues that Flexis is targeting are: the need to have quantities of weapons in the locations they are needed for prolonged operations; maintaining a technological edge; and the uncertainty of future operations and whether they will be symmetrical or asymmetrical in nature.

Edward Dodwell, head of MBDA's Concept Visions 2015 team, used the example of the carrier strike mission to illustrate the benefits of this concept, claiming that these operations are typically prolonged, but simultaneously quick reaction is required and the capability has to be readily available.

Flexis, he adds, is a more low cost approach, because only one baseline configuration cost is required, with lower cost variable packages for the missile added on top.

Boeing B-52 evolves again with guided weapons launcher

On 16 January 1991, seven Boeing B-52Gs fully loaded with AGM-86C conventional air-launched cruise missiles took flight from Barksdale AFB in Louisiana on a top-secret mission to destroy targets inside Iraq.

Those 35h missions were the first combat sorties of Operation Desert Storm. Lesser known is that the mission, dubbed Secret Squirrel, also marked the combat debut of the AGM-86C, with 35 weapons fired and 85-95% of targets successfully destroyed, according to the US air force.

A derivative of the nuclear-tipped AGM-86B, the B-52G would not have been deployed if only armed with nuclear cruise missiles and unguided bombs. Now, 25 years on, Boeing has delivered six modified rotary launchers that will again revolutionise how the veteran B-52 strategic bomber is used in combat.

Until now, the slightly newer 1960s H-model aircraft has been unable to drop conventional, precision-guided weapons from its belly. The new digital rotary launcher changes that, by allowing each B-52 to carry eight Boeing-made joint direct attack munitions internally, and eventual extended-range joint air-to-surface standoff missiles (JASSM-ERs) built by Lockheed Martin and Raytheon miniature air-launched decoys.

This means that the B-52 can now carry smart weapons on its wings, and internally – either increasing its destructive power or reducing fuel consumption on long flights by housing weapons internally to reduce drag.

That potent combination of MALD and JASSM-ERs makes the non-stealthy "Stratofortress" a flexible, fist-day-of-war combat aircraft that can destroy targets from hundreds of kilometres away and provide decoy support for flocks of front-line fighter jets. Those six launchers can be swapped between the B-52 fleet.

The upgrade comes as the air force tried to keep its remaining 76 H-model B-52s combat-relevant through 2040 as the classified Northrop Grumman long-range strike bomber (LRS-B) enters service

The Stratofortress has long been considered a flying bomb truck, capable of hauling 31.5t (70,000lbs) of ordnance, but its guided weapons capabilities have often lagged more modern airframes.

Last week, the aircraft was sent on a deterrence mission to South Korea as a warning to its northern neighbour, after Pyongyang detonated a nuclear bomb. Going forward, the B-52 will probably feature in more conventional confrontations.

"The upgrades to the B-52 bomber's internal weapons bay have made it possible to have zero gap on the bomber's long-range bombing capabilities as we transfer from conventional air-launched cruise missiles to JASSM-ER," says air force B-52 programme director Col Tim Dickinson.

"With this added capability, the B-52 bomber will remain relevant for decades to come," adds Boeing B-52 internal weapons bay upgrade manager Jeff Lupton.

Carrying more MALD decoys creates a whole new role for the B-52, because those weapons are designed to replicate the flight path and radar signature of American combat jets to distract air defence systems. The newer version, designated MALD-J, can switch to jamming mode to suppress those same air defences, using a closely-guarded electronic warfare payload.

Resurrected B-52H returns to flight after seven years in storage

A US Air Force Boeing B-52H is back in flight after spending eight years parked in storage in the Arizona desert.

The regenerated Stratofortress, nicknamed Ghostrider, completed first flight on 30 August at Tinker AFB, Oklahoma, rising into the sky without a painted livery.

The base's Air Logistics Center was tasked with restoring the airworthiness of the un-retired B-52H, reversing a normally one-way trip for aging military aircraft to the "boneyard" at Davis-Monthan AFB near Tucson, Arizona.

The air force will use Ghostrider to replace another B-52H severely damaged by fire in 2014, restoring the strategic bomber fleet to approved levels. The air force maintains of fleet of 58 B-52s in the active duty force and 18 more in reserve units.

Ghostrider, tail number 61-007, arrived at Tinker last fall before entering the bomber's firsts programmed depot maintenance cycle in 12 years.

The Air Logistics Center plans to complete several more flights of the B-52H at Tinker before handing the bomber over to an operational squadron at Minot AFB, North Dakota.

ISR Is stap 1.

Rolls Royce offers BR725 for B-52 re-engine effort

Rolls-Royce is pitching the BR725 for the US Air Force's B-52 bomber re-engine effort, though the service has yet to establish a programme of record or release a request for proposals.

Momentum has increased on the engine replacement as more responses to the USAF's B-52H engine alternative study have poured in, says Tom Hartmann, R-R North America's senior vice-president of customer business. Despite an accident in January that dropped one TF33 engine from a bomber during a training mission, R-R has no sense has no sense of when an RFP could drop or whether the USAF could fit the engine replacement in its budget.

"We're acting like it's imminent, those are the grindstones we're working," Hartmann says. "I think there's been a sense of urgency for a couple years now. The reason we're doing this today is because we're seeing an increased momentum and want to offer our best shot at the competition."

Without a firm RFP in hand, R-R is basing its initial BR725 offering on discussions with the service and B-52 manufacturer Boeing. R-R clarified the company is not teaming with Boeing.

R-R's 700-series engines are part of the USAF's F130 engine family, powering the service's Bombardier Global 5000-based E-11A Battlefield Airborne Communications Node aircraft and the Gulfstream G550-based C-37A. If the USAF moves forward with engine replacement and R-R wins the contract, the company would create a new F130 engine assembly and test line in the US, while production of commercial variant, the BR725, would continue in Germany. R-R's primary engine assembly site in the US is the former Allison complex in Indianapolis. R-R also produces subassemblies in a plant in Richmond, Virginia.

So far, the USAF has foregone plans to reconfigure the B-52s with four engines, which would have required expensive modifications to the wings, R-R says. R-R previously considered a higher thrust variant of the RB211 turbofan engine as a four-engine option on the B-52, but the service does not appear to be moving in that direction, according to R-R.

"Our BR700 is right in the sweet spot," Hartmann says. "It's almost a perfect one-for-one fit from a thrust and a size standpoint."

While rival engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney has touted an upgraded version of its original TF33 engine to sustain the B-52 through 2050, R-R cites support from both Boeing and the USAF for a replacement rather than refurbishment, Hartmann says. The new engines would require a reduced number of air refueling tankers, would avoid obsolescence risks older engines could pose and could provide a 34% improvement in fuel consumption over existing engines, he says.

"Refurbishing the engines only gives you a partial benefit," he says. "So you may see initial lower costs, but it's a $10 billion increase in fuel costs and overhauls over the life of the fleet."

Air Force B-52 Gets New Internal Weapons Bay

The Air Force plan is to keep the historic B-52 bomber relevant and functional for decades well into the 2040s

The Air Force is surging forward with a massive, fleet-wide modernization overhaul of the battle-tested, Vietnam-era B-52 bomber, an iconic airborne workhorse for the U.S. military dating back to the 1960s.

Engineers are now equipping all 76 of the Air Force B-52s with digital data-links, moving-map displays, next-generation avionics, new radios and an ability to both carry more weapons internally and integrate new, high-tech weapons as they emerge, service officials said.

The technical structure and durability of the B-52 airframes in the Air Force fleet are described as extremely robust and able to keep flying well into the 2040s and beyond – so the service is taking steps to ensure the platform stays viable by receiving the most current and effective avionics, weapons and technologies, Air Force weapons developers told Scout Warrior in an interview last year.

The B-52 has a massive, 185-foot wingspan, a weight of about 185,000 pounds and an ability to reach high sub-sonic speeds and altitudes of 50,000 feet, Air Force officials said.

"Their structure, service life and air frames are good until around 2040. They are built very strong structurally. This is not a structural modification, but upgrades to the capabilities and the avionics," a senior Air Force official explained. "You are taking this old structurally sound airframe and putting modern avionics, modern communications technology and modern weaponry into it."

Known for massive bombing missions during the Vietnam War, the 159-foot long B-52s have in recent years been operating over Afghanistan in support of military actions there from a base in Guam.

The B-52 also served in Operation Desert Storm, Air Force statements said.  "B-52s struck wide-area troop concentrations, fixed installations and bunkers, and decimated the morale of Iraq's Republican Guard," an Air Force statement said.

In 2001, the B-52 provided close-air support to forces in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom, service officials said. The B-52 also played a role in Operation Iraqi Freedom. On March 21, 2003, B-52Hs launched approximately 100 CALCMs (Conventional Air Launched Cruise Missiles) during a night mission.

Given the B-52s historic role in precision-bombing and close air support, next-generation avionics and technologies are expected to greatly increase potential missions for the platform in coming years, service officials said.

Communications, Avionics Upgrades
Two distinct, yet interwoven B-52 modernization efforts will increase the electronics, communications technology, computing and avionics available in the cockpit while simultaneously configuring the aircraft with the ability to carry up to eight of the newest "J-Series" precision-guided weapons internally – in addition to carrying six weapons on each wing, officials said.

Eight B-52s have already received a communications (coms systems) upgrade called Combat Network Communication Technology, or CONECT – a radio, electronics and data-link upgrade which, among other things, allows aircraft crews to transfer mission and targeting data directly to aircraft systems while in flight (machine to machine), an Air Force official said.

A key attribute in terms of "machine-to-machine" data-transfer technology which allows for more efficient, seamless and rapid communication of combat-relevant information.

Using what's called an ARC 210 Warrior software-programmable voice and data radio, pilots can now send and receive targeting data, mapping information or intelligence with ground stations, command centers and other aircraft..

An ability to receive real-time targeting updates is of great relevance to the B-52s close-air-support mission because fluid, fast-moving or dynamic combat situations often mean ground targets appear, change or disappear quickly.

Alongside moving much of the avionics from analogue to digital technology, CONECT also integrates new servers, modems, colored display screens in place of old green monochrome and provides pilots with digital moving-map displays which can be populated with real-time threat and mission data, developers explained.

The new digital screens also show colored graphics highlighting the aircraft's flight path.

Single explained that being able to update key combat-relevant information while in transit will substantially help the aircraft more effectively travel longer distances for missions, as needed.

"The key to this is that this is part of the long-range strike family of systems — so if you take off out of Barksdale Air Force Base and you go to your target area, it could take 15 or 16 hours to get there. By the time you get there, all the threat information has changed," an Air Force official said. "Things move, pop up or go away and the targeting data may be different."

The upgrades will also improve the ability of the airplane to receive key intelligence information through a data link called the Intelligence Broadcast Receiver. In addition, the B-52s will be able to receive information through a LINK-16-like high-speed digital data link able to transmit targeting and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance, or ISR information.

The CONECT effort, slated to cost $1.1 billion overall, will continue to unfold over the next several years, Single explained.

The entire fleet of B-52 will be operational with CONECT  will be ready by 2021, developers told Warrior.

Weapons Upgrade

The Air Force is also making progress with a technology-inspired effort to increase the weapons payload for the workhorse bomber.

The 1760 Internal Weapons Bay Upgrade, or IWBU, will allow the B-52 to internally carry up to eight of the newest "J-Series" bombs in addition to carrying six on pylons under each wing.

The B-52 have previously been able to carry JDAM weapons externally, but with the IWBU the aircraft will be able to internally house some of the most cutting edge precision-guided Joint Direct Attack Munitions and Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles, among others.

"It is about a 66 percent increase in carriage capability for the B-52, which is huge. You can imagine the increased number of targets you can reach, and you can strike the same number of targets with significantly less sorties," the Air Force official said.

Also having an increased internal weapons bay capability affords an opportunity to increase fuel-efficiency by removing bombs from beneath the wings and reducing drag.

The first increment of IWBU, slated to be finished by 2017, will integrate an internal weapons bay ability to fire a laser-guided JDAM. A second increment, to finish by 2022, will integrate more modern or cutting-edge weapons such as the Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile, or JASSM, JASSM Extended Range (ER) and a technology called Miniature Air Launched Decoy, or MALD. A MALD-J "jammer" variant, which will also be integrated into the B-52, can be used to jam enemy radar technologies as well.

IWBU, which uses a digital interface and a rotary launcher to increase the weapons payload, is expected to cost roughly $313 million, service officials said.

USAF details scope and schedule for B-52 re-engining

A new US Air Force document released last week outlines the details, timeline and likely competitors for a plan to acquire at least 608 new turbofan engines to replace the eight Pratt & Whitney TF33s on each of 76 Boeing B-52H bombers in the US Air Force fleet.

The air force's sustainment office for the 17,000lb-thrust TF33 decided last June that the 60-year-old powerplants are not sustainable beyond 2030, due to age, parts obsolescence and a diminishing supplier base, the document says.

P&W has urged air force officials to simply refurbish the TF33, but the document makes clear that approach is not one of the options the air force is considering. Also rejected are previous proposals that offered to cut the B-52H's engine count from eight to four.

Instead, all three acquisition strategies under review replace all eight TF33s to cut fuel consumption by 20-40%. The new engines must not alter the aircraft's take-off performance and the weapon release envelope, the document says. The engine replacement also would include revamping the B-52H's electrical power system, installing new generators and wiring to support new electronics.

The USAF's three acquisition strategies only differ on the method used to select a replacement engine. One option is delegate the engine selection to an aircraft integration contractor. Boeing was the designer and remains the prime contractor for the B-52H, but the document indicates the company could face competition for the aircraft integration role.

The other two strategies have the USAF selecting the engine contractor after either a one-step competition or a two-stage bidding process.

A notional schedule using the two-stage bidding process indicates the full programme will take 17 years to complete. So far, the USAF has only been awarded seed money in Fiscal 2018 to lock-in the acquisition strategy and release a request for proposals to industry. If the USAF selects a two-stage bidding process, the initial operational capability for the B-52H re-engining would be set for Fiscal 2029, with full operational capability declared five years later.

The prospect of selling more than 600 engines to the USAF has attracted several prospective bidders. In addition to incumbent P&W, Rolls-Royce and GE Aviation attended the air force's industry day event on 12-13 December in Barksdale, Louisiana, according to the air force's briefing slides.

Another engine manufacturer, Safran, also attended the event, but it was not immediately clear if the France-based company is interested in supplying engines, nacelles or electrical equipment.

Although the contract opportunity could be lucrative, past experience suggests the air force could still back away from following through with the full programme. One of the briefing slides covers the history of B-52 re-engining projects, with eight prior studies or proposals to replace the TF33s dating back to 1971.

The air force's recent determination that the TF33 is supportable beyond the next 12 years may give new urgency to the latest attempt. Although the air force dropped the B-52H fleet from its list of aircraft carrying nuclear glide bombs, the aircraft is still counted as a strategic asset for launching nuclear stand-off missiles, including the forthcoming long-range standoff weapon. Top air force leaders have said the B-52H will likely remain in operation beyond 2050, as the fleet approaches a century of operational service in 2055.

USAF likely to issue B-52 engine replacement request for proposals in early 2019

The US Air Force is likely to issue a request for proposal for its Boeing B-52H Stratofortress bomber engine replacement programme close to the first quarter of 2019, according to an Air Force document released on 13 March.

The contract for re-engining the USAF's 76 Boeing B-52H bombers would likely be granted some four to six months after final proposals are submitted, according to the document. The department is looking to acquire at least 608 new, commercially available turbofan engines to replace the eight Pratt & Whitney TF33s each bomber carries.

The USAF decided last June that the TF33, a jet engine first produced 60 years ago, is not sustainable beyond 2030, due to age, parts obsolescence and a shrinking supplier base. Pratt & Whitney, Rolls-Royce and GE Aviation are possible bidders for the engine replacement programme.

The effort to put new engines on the B-52H bomber, and thus extend its lifespan, comes as a result of the USAF's plan to rely on the bomber for decades to come. The USAF plans to trim its bomber fleet by 2040 down to the B-52H and the forthcoming Northrop Grumman B-21 stealth bomber. The Northrop Grumman B-2 and the Rockwell B-1 are scheduled for retirement.

USAF looks to quadruple B-52 external weapons load

The US Air Force (USAF) is looking to quadruple the weight of bombs that the Boeing B-52H Stratofortress is able to carry externally.

According to a request for information (RFI) issued on 21 June, Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC) is seeking a new external weapons pylon that will take the B-52's current 10,000 lb (4,536 kg) maximum external load (across two underwing pylons) to 40,000 lb (18,144 kg).

"The current Improved Common Pylon (ICP) ... was designed in 1959 and has been in service since the 1960s. When it was introduced, there wasn't a requirement nor did anyone foresee a need to carry weapons heavier than 5,000 lb. It was modified in the late 1990s ... and has performed exceptionally well ... [but] it has limitations when it comes to heavy weight capacity. With current heavy weapons exceeding 5,000 lb there is a new requirement for a replacement external carriage pylon assembly," the RFI said, adding that the new replacement pylon will not exceed 5,000 lb in weight while being capable of carrying multiple weapons in the 5,000 lb to 20,000 lb weight class.

The RFI provided no details as to planned costs and timelines for the pylon upgrade, except to say that the total effort from development to fielding should be accomplished between 36 and 72 months. Responses to the RFI are due by 15:00 hrs Central Standard Time on 20 July.

The new pylon would enable the B-52 to carry any of the air-launched munitions in the USAF inventory up to the 22,000 lb Massive Ordnance Air Burst (MOAB) bomb.

USAF proposes MOAB-sized bomb carriage for B-52H wings

In addition to making the Boeing B-52H more fuel efficient and sophisticated, the US Air Force's ongoing makeover project also aims to make the pride of Gen Curtis LeMay's Cold War-era bomber fleet more destructive.

A market survey opened on 21 June reveals the USAF's plan to equip the B-52H wing pylon to carry a single weapon weighing up to the 9,070kg (20,000lb) class, which potentially includes the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast (MOAB).

The B-52H now has the ability to carry heavy weapons, including the 13,600kg-class Massive Ordnance Penetrator, internally. But the the Improved Common Pylon on the B-52H wings are limited to carrying weapons weighing up to 2,270kg (5,000lb).

"There wasn't a requirement nor did anyone foresee a need to carry weapons heavier than 5,000lb," the market survey released by the USAF states.

"With current heavy weapons exceeding 5,000lb there is a new requirement for a replacement external carriage pylon assembly to facilitate these and other emerging needs," the document adds.

The USAF hasn't identified a schedule for launching development of the new pylon, but plans to move quickly once the contract is awarded.

The B-52 system programme office is considering a plan to award a cost-plus-fixed-fee-type contract for prototypes and production, with a three- to six-year period for engineering manufacturing and development.

LeMay originally envisioned replacing B-52s with a fleet of supersonic bombers, but the subsonic, long-range H-model has persisted since it entered the fleet in 1961.

Instead of transitioning to retirement, the USAF now plans continue operating the fleet until they reach nearly the century-mark in 2060.

In addition to connectivity and networking upgrades, the USAF plans to re-engine the Pratt & Whitney TF33 turbofans with modern eight modern engines for each aircraft.

America's venerable B-52 bomber vs. Russian S-400 missile system: Who wins?

The recent deployment of six B-52H Stratofortresses bombers from Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana at the U.S. European Command area became a real hot topic in the media and in experts community.

B-52s have conducted flights near the Russian border in Baltic Region that probably to the annoyance of the Russian military. Moreover, Russian fighter jets repeatedly conducted an intercept of U.S. Air Force B-52H Stratofortress bomber over international waters of the Baltic Sea.

As previously reported, the Russian army also moved components of its S-300 long-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems from Gvardeysk to Baltiysk, the westernmost town in Russia.

In a series of posts on Twitter on 22 March, military blogger Petri Mäkelä reported that Russian Defense Forces has deployed S-300 systems at the westernmost point of the enclave of Kaliningrad, near the border with Poland to counter potential air strike.

Against the backdrop of growing tensions between Russia and the U.S., many began to wonder who would win in battle of B-52 bomber vs. S-400 missile defense systems.

Developed in the 1950s, the B-52 heavy bomber has been the mainstay of the United States Air Force for 64 years. Venerable B-52 bomber saw service in Vietnam, Desert Storm, and the War on Terror in both Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria. And of course, he was a cornerstone of American Cold War nuclear deterrence for decades.

Even at his age, B-52 Stratofortress is capable of dropping or launching the widest array of weapons in the U.S. inventory, includes gravity bombs, cluster bombs, precision guided missiles, and joint direct attack munitions. The basic B-52 design evolved from an aircraft capable of dropping their bombs from 30,000 feet to the real Stratofortress that can launch long-range cruise missiles.

It is worth noting that Russian military sources claim that five U.S. Air Force's B-52H Stratofortress bombers conducted a mock nuclear strike against targets in Russia, include Moskov and St. Saint Petersburg during training flights on 28 March.

The training flight of U.S. B-52H bombers with Norwegian F-16 fighter jets over the Norwegian Sea was one of the examples of dummy cruise missile attacks outside the detection zone by air-defense radars, as well as outside the combat radius of MiG-31 supersonic interceptor aircraft.

The classic B-52 cannot penetrate adversary air defenses; therefore it needs the long-range missile. But, according to Airforce Technology website, B-52H is capable of carrying some missile systems, included AGM-86A air-launched cruise missiles (with range 1500 miles), AGM-84 Harpoon missiles (with range 77 miles), AGM-86C conventional air-launched cruise missiles (with range 1500 miles) for the full range of strike operations.

A total of 744 B-52s were built with the last, a B-52H, delivered in October 1962. "H" modification is the only variant still in use by the U.S. Air Force.

Even though B-52 is the oldest aircraft in the history of the Air Force, it still remains deadly for enemies of the United States around the world.

As for Russian S-400, it is one of the most modern and controversial defense missile systems in the world currently.

S-400 surface to air missile system, previously known as the S-300 PMU-3, developed in the 1990s by Russia's Almaz Central Design Bureau as an upgrade of the S-300 family. It has been in service with the Russian Armed Forces since 2007. Open sources report the S-400 uses four missiles to fill its performance envelope: the very-long-range 40N6 (248 miles), the long-range 48N6 (155 miles), the medium-range 9M96E2 (74 miles) and the short-range 9M96E (25 miles).

But a recently published reportby the Swedish Defense Research Agency, commonly known as FOI, questioned the capability of modern Russian S-400 anti-aircraft system.

In closer inspection, Russia's capabilities are not quite as daunting, especially if potential countermeasures are factored in.

The analysis shows that the actual range of the new Russian anti-aircraft system is actually only 90-125 miles. Against low-flying missiles launched from a B-52 bomber, the S-400's range may be as short as 12 miles.

According to a report, the missile with a purported 248-miles range, the 40N6, is not yet operational and has been plagued by problems in development and testing. In its current configuration, the S-400 system should mainly be considered a threat to large high-value aircraft such as AWACS or transport aircraft at medium to high altitudes, out to a range of 125-155 mile. In contrast, the effective range against agile fighter jets and cruise missiles operating at low altitudes can be an as little 12-20 miles.

Moreover, despite its sophistication, an S-400 battery is dependent on a single engagement radar and has a limited number of firing platforms. It is thus vulnerable both to munitions targeting its engagement radar and to saturation attacks. If and when the 40N6 missile goes online, its 248-miles technical range cannot be effectively exploited against targets below approximately 3000 meters unless target data can be provided and updated during the missile's flight by airborne or forward-deployed radars.

As a result, only a real conflict can give an exact answer. It is not easy to fully predict who would win in an epic battle between a B-52 bomber and S-400 missile system. Thousands of other factors, such as the weather, crew, electronic warfare, and more, can affect the real situation.

USAF B-52 in carry test of hypersonic ARRW missile

The US Air Force (USAF) conducted a carry test flight of its AGM-183A Air Launched Rapid Response Weapon (ARRW) on a Boeing B-52 Stratofortress aircraft on 12 June at Edwards AFB in California.

The prototype did not have explosives and was not released from the B-52 during the flight test, says the USAF. Instead, a sensor-only version of the ARRW prototype was carried externally by a B-52 during the test to gather environmental and aircraft handling data.

The test gathered data on drag and vibration impacts on the weapon itself and on the external carriage equipment of the B-52, says the USAF. The service is required to collect such data on its weapons systems via testing while undergoing development. The USAF did not make available pictures of the carry test.

Conceptual image of DARPA's Falcon Hypersonic Test Vehicle, a predecessor to ARRW, as it emerges from its rocket nose cone and prepares to re-enter the Earth's atmosphere

The USAF awarded a $780 million contract to Lockheed Missiles and Fire Control in 2017 to develop ARRW. A so-called boost glide hypersonic system, the vehicle uses a rocket to accelerate its payload to high speeds, before the payload separates from the rocket and glides unpowered to its destination at hypersonic speeds up to Mach 20. ARRW is set to reach early operational capability by FY2022, says the USAF.

"We're using the rapid prototyping authorities provided by Congress to quickly bring hypersonic weapon capabilities to the warfighter," says Will Roper, assistant secretary of the USAF for acquisition, technology and logistics. "We set out an aggressive schedule with ARRW. Getting to this flight test on time highlights the amazing work of our acquisition workforce and our partnership with Lockheed Martin and other industry partners."

Roper says streamlined acquisition regulations approved by the US Congress is important to develop weapons that could counter Washington's adversaries. Hypersonic missile development efforts by Russia and China in recent years have sparked an arms race with the USA.

"This type of speed in our acquisition system is essential – it allows us to field capabilities rapidly to compete against the threats we face," Roper says.

The service's other hypersonic weapon effort is the Hypersonic Conventional Strike Weapon (HCSW), an air-breathing, ram-jet-powered cruise missile that it expects to have an initial operational capability by 2020. The HCSW development contract was awarded to Lockheed Missiles and Space in 2018 for $928 million.

Raytheon selected for B-52 AESA radar upgrade

Raytheon (NYSE: RTN) was selected by the Boeing Company as radar supplier for the B-52 bomber radar modernization program. Under the contract, Raytheon will design, develop, produce and sustain active electronically scanned array radar systems for the entire U.S. Air Force B-52 fleet. The advanced radar upgrade will ensure the aircraft remains mission ready through 2050 and beyond. Low rate initial production is scheduled to begin in 2024.

With an AESA radar on board, the B-52 will gain improved navigation reliability to support nuclear and conventional missions. Raytheon's B-52 radar is based on AESA technologies developed from the APG-79/APG-82 radar family.

"When it comes to years spent flying in support of our nation's defense," said Eric Ditmars, vice president of Raytheon Secure Sensor Solutions. "Our new AESA radars give aircrews the eyes they need to achieve their mission for the duration of the B-52's service life."

The B-52 will also benefit from improved mapping and detection range and an increase in the number of targets it can simultaneously engage. Along with improved capabilities that help crews see further and more accurately, Raytheon's AESA radar offers greater reliability than the current system because it has no moving parts and uses modern operating software.

The A-12 Avenger Shows Why The Navy Needs A Long-Range Strike Aircraft

The Navy's carrier air wings would have greatly benefited from an A-12-like capability had the program survived.

Here's What You Need To Remember: Though it was not immediately apparent at the time, with the cancellation of the A-12 program and the retirement of the A-6E, the U.S. Navy gave up its long-range strike capability in favor of an air wing that focused on sortie generation. While that was not a problem in the immediate aftermath of the end of the Cold War, with Russia resurgent and the emergence of China as a great power challenger, it is a serious issue for the viability of the carrier fleet.

During the closing stages of the Cold War, the United States Navy was developing a new long-range stealth bomber that could strike at even the most heavily defended targets from the deck of an aircraft carrier. But the ill-fated program was cancelled; leaving a gap in naval aviation capability that has not been filled to this day.

Called the McDonnell Douglas/General Dynamics A-12 Avenger II—a product of the Advanced Tactical Aircraft (ATA) program—the new bomber would have replaced the long-serving Grumman A-6E Intruder. However, as the Soviet threat evaporated, then Defense Secretary Dick Cheney cancelled the A-12 program on January 7, 1991, due to massive cost and schedule overruns as well as severe technical problems. But while the stealthy A-12 had its problems, the bomber's demise led the Navy to today's problem: A carrier air wing that does not have the range or penetrating strike capability to defeat advanced anti-access/area-denial (A2/AD) capabilities.

While the Lockheed Martin F-35C Joint Strike Fighter will finally bring X-band stealth technology onboard the carrier and the forthcoming MQ-25 Stingray unmanned aerial refueling tanker will help to extend the range of the existing air wing, those aircraft do not make up for the lack of a heavy hitting long-range bomber platform that can strike deep into the heart of enemy territory. Even with the F-35C and MQ-25, the Navy's carrier air wings would not be able to strike at Chinese targets in the Western Pacific without putting the carrier at considerable risk. Beijing is able to threaten U.S. Navy carriers with anti-ship ballistic missiles such the DF-21D and the DF-26— the later of which has a range of roughly 2000 nautical miles—by forcing those vessels to operate further out at sea.

The Navy had envisioned the need for a carrier-based penetrating strike aircraft with extended ranges during the 1980s given rapidly advancing Soviet capabilities. Indeed, as former Center for a New American Security scholar Jerry Hendrix, a retired naval aviator, noted, the initial requirements for the A-12 called for an aircraft with a 1,700 nautical mile combat radius and an internal payload of 6,000lbs with a radar cross section comparable to the Northrop B-2 Spirit strategic bomber.

Had the A-12 program panned out, the Navy would still have a potent long-range carrier-based penetrating strike capability that would have been superior to anything currently envisioned. However, technical problems and requirements changes—all of which negatively impacted strike capability—whittled the A-12's unrefueled combat radius down to 1,000 nautical miles and eventually down to 785 nautical miles. Eventually, as technical problems and program snafus mounted—largely due to "criminal" program management—Cheney was forced to cancel the entire program.

Though it was not immediately apparent at the time, with the cancellation of the A-12 program and the retirement of the A-6E, the U.S. The Navy's carrier air wings would have greatly benefited from an A-12-like capability had the program survived.

Analysts have proposed solutions such as a long-range stealthy unmanned strike aircraft as a solution to the Navy's long-range penetrating strike gap, however, there are problems with that solution. Current Pentagon policy prohibits autonomous weapons from making the decision to take a human life on its own volition, which means that human operators have to be in the loop even when the aircraft is deep inside enemy territory. However, adversaries such as Russia and China will attack the vulnerable data-links that control such an unmanned aircraft through electronic attacks, cyber-warfare or a combination of methods. Drones have been hacked before—by insurgents, no less—thus positive control cannot be guaranteed.

Human pilots, however, cannot be hacked and can make on-the-spot judgments to engage or change targets etc. without the need to home phone—so to speak. Thus, a modern incarnation of a manned carrier-based long-range penetrating strike aircraft might be a solution to the Navy's range problem. Modern materials, sensor and propulsion technology—particularly advanced adaptive-cycle engines that are currently in development—would solve most of the technical challenges that stymied the A-12 program.

Given that advanced adaptive cycle engines which are currently in development promise to reduce fuel burn by more than 35 percent, a new carrier-based bomber should be able to meet a 1100 nautical mile combat radius requirement even given the size constraints of carrier aircraft. Thus, the Navy should consider the development of a next-generation carrier-based long-range penetrating strike aircraft. Like the original ATA, which was also slated to replace the Boeing F-15E, a modern incarnation of such a warplane could also replace the Strike Eagle while supplementing the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and F-35C on the carrier flight deck. It will not be cheap, but given that President Donald Trump has signaled his intent to invest heavily in the nation's defense, it is an option that the Navy should consider.

Two B-52H bombers regenerated to active service undergoing simultaneous maintenance at Oklahoma City Air Logistics Complex

The B-52H bomber nick named "Wise Guy," sits in post dock nearing completion of its regeneration back to active service, Nov. 19, 2020. The bomber sat in the desert for 10 years at the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group's National-Level Airpower Reservoir located at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona and is the second B-52H aircraft to be brought back to active service. The first aircraft was nick named "Ghost Rider" and was regenerated in 2015. Both bombers are here at the same time and will return to the 5th Bomb Wing at Minot AFB, North Dakota.

The only two B-52H "Stratofortress" bombers to be resurrected from the Arizona desert have been undergoing programmed depot maintenance at the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Complex.

Ghost Rider, the first of the bombers to be brought back to life, returned to service in 2015 after being mothballed for seven years at the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group's National-Level Airpower Reservoir located at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona. Wise Guy spent 10 years in the desert before being resurrected late last year.

Ghost Rider, tail number 61-007, is currently undergoing routine PDM. This is an intensive process where the team inspects, repairs, modifies and restores the aircraft to ensure serviceability and prolongs its service life. According to Dan Frey, 565th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron Production Flight chief, each B-52 in the fleet undergoes PDM every four years.

On Dec. 30, 2020, Wise Guy, tail number 60-034, finished the process of regeneration that formally began in 2018 with an in-depth structural analysis and logistics support review completed by the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center's B-52 System Program Office to bring the aircraft back to active service. When Wise Guy rejoins the fleet, it will join Ghost Rider at the 5th Bomb Wing at Minot AFB, North Dakota, and will bring the number of B-52 bombers mandated by Congress to full strength at 76 aircraft.

Though they are both the same type of aircraft, there were many challenges to overcome with each aircraft as it travelled through the regeneration process.

John Raihl, 565th AMXS aircraft section chief, said the biggest challenge with Ghost Rider was establishing a plan to ensure all required inspections, maintenance, and modifications were accomplished on schedule and within budget. The plan was implemented in coordination with the B-52 System Program Office, Logistics and Engineering, as well as the 76th Aircraft Maintenance Group's 76th Expeditionary Depot Maintenance Flight.

"Using scripting tools, the enterprise team drafted a script that achieved this in addition to maximizing concurrent work across different maintenance disciplines," said Raihl.

Wise Guy presented the enterprise team with a different challenge: two major electrical wiring projects.

"Rewire I and II projects were the biggest challenges due to the scope of the project, as well as the limited experience we had with those specific wire bundles," Jennifer Smith, 565th AMXS avionics/electric section chief, said.

Main landing gear structural defects also presented unique challenges for Wise Guy during the initial regeneration phase, as well as during the PDM cycle.

Travis Reese, AFLCMC lead regeneration engineer, said, "Repairs necessary to prepare Wise Guy for first flight presented risk to the overall project. Additionally, these temporary repairs had to be removed and permanently addressed, adding scope and complexity for the technicians in the 565th AMXS structural repair section."

Additionally, the 76th Commodities Maintenance Group partners had to manufacture all of the wire harnesses from original drawings. This process alone took more than four months prior to the aircraft arriving at Tinker Air Force Base, Smith said.

Lessons learned from regenerating Ghost Rider enabled the enterprise team to apply what they learned when working on Wise Guy.

"By utilizing enterprise team meetings ahead of the aircraft's arrival, we were able to expand Ghost Rider's process script into a precise script," said Mike Bassham, 565th AMXS sheet metal section chief. The script process enabled the team to measure milestones for all major jobs for the purpose of keeping the aircraft on schedule and determining where they needed to apply additional resources to tackle constraints, he added.

Jeff Base, 565th AMXS director, explained that hundreds of people across the OC-ALC are involved in regenerating and, or overhauling aircraft requiring a total Team Tinker effort.

"AFLCMC provides engineering and logistics support, the 76th EDMX traveled to the 309th AMARG to prepare aircraft for flight after years in storage, the 76th CMXG overhauls and manufactures parts, the 76th Propulsion Maintenance Group overhauls engines and manufactures parts," Base said.

David Strawderman, AFLCMC's B-52 System Program Office regeneration project manager, echoed Base's comments, adding the motivation and dedication of everyone involved ensured both regeneration programs were successful.

"For Wise Guy, over 100 personnel from nine organizations supported critical maintenance tasks to deliver the aircraft from AMARG to Tinker – in less than four months," he said. "The abilities are truly remarkable and a testament to the resolve of the B-52 enterprise."

In addition to the production side, Base said the OC-ALC, 76th AMXG Business Offices and the 76th Maintenance Support Group ensure the team has the resources, while the 76th Software Maintenance Group provides the required software. The 565th AMXS has over 600 people, Base said, and each person will either touch the aircraft or support it at some point during the PDM cycle.

Jason Puder, 565th AMXS deputy director, summed up the importance of regenerating aircraft to provide combat air power to America's warfighters.

"The success of regenerating these two aircraft has proven the Air Force's ability to generate war power.  Hidden in the details are countless hours of planning, engineering, logistics, and maintenance that began the moment the aircraft entered long-term storage at Davis-Monthan AFB until the culmination of each aircraft departing Tinker AFB fully airworthy again years later," said Puder.

"The PDM effort was just one of many obstacles overcome, which, ideally, are unnoticed by the frontline Airmen charged with maintaining and flying these aircraft going forward," Puder added.

Meet the Saab 36: Sweden's Secret Nuclear Bomber Program

Here's why it never made it past the drawing board.

After the Second World War, Sweden initiated a clandestine nuclear program — and had plans for a supersonic nuclear bomber.

Atoms for Peace

After World War II, the Soviet specter lay heavily across Europe. Like other post-war countries, Sweden wanted to protect itself from a Soviet invasion — and decided to manufacture nuclear weapons to ensure its security.

Initially, Sweden tried to get nuclear weapons expertise from outside the country. The United States, as the world's first nuclear power and a guarantor of European security, was a logical partner.

In the early days of the Cold War, the United States pursued a strategy of promoting nuclear power for energy production — President Eisenhower's "Atoms for Peace" concept. Nuclear material and nuclear know-how would only be transferred to foreign governments on the condition that the nuclear research and development would only be for peaceful purposes, precluding weapon's research. Sweden declined.

Buying nuclear weapons directly from the United States was also an unattractive option for Sweden most likely impossible.

Luckily for the Swedes, Uranium-containing shale is abundant in Sweden.

Bombs Away

By the mid-1960s, Sweden has enough fissile material to build a bomb in six months. It just needed a platform to deliver nuclear payload — the Saab 36.

The Saab 36 was a twin-engine supersonic bomber. It would have had delta wings, and fly in the Mach 2+ range. Flight ceiling was to be 18,000 meters or 60,000 feet.

Targets of value to Sweden were in the Baltic — the Baltic countries of Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania are just across the Baltic Sea, and Poland and East Germany are also practically next door to Sweden. (Though the Cold War is over, the Baltic is still an area of concern for Sweden.)

The Saab 36 had to deal with a few design restrictions which would affect its payload.

Designers at Saab were concerned that the weapons externally attached to the fuselage or wings would create drag, degrading the jet's performance. The high Mach 2+ speed would also have generated a large amount of heat that could damage weapons — or worse cause them to "cook-off" or accidentally explode.

Bombs would have to be stored internally in an enclosed weapons bay, farther away from potentially dangerous high temperatures. Internal space would be at a premium, and there would only be space for a single 800 kilogram, or 1,800 pound, free-falling nuclear bomb, reducing the efficacy of the bomber, and limiting its use to a tactical weapon delivery system rather than a strategic deterrent.

The Saab 36 got off the drawing board just as a simple wind tunnel mockup and the design was not finalized. Images online appear to show two different designs, one with a chin-mounted engine intake, and another with two jet engines integrated in the delta wing.

Postscript

Though the bomber never entered serial production, work on the Saab 36 contributed in part to the development of the Saab 37, a strike fighter that was one of the first successful jets that incorporated the delta wing design

The Swedish Parliament, the Riksdag, would renounce nuclear weapons in 1968, and Sweden would abandon its nuclear ambitions in the early 1970s, shipping fissile material abroad. The Saab 36 would never fly.

Boeing plans to start testing external hypersonic missile pylon for B-1 next year

Two Boeing officials attended the quarterly meeting of the Military Affairs Committee of the Abilene Chamber of Commerce on Sept. 28 and spoke about giving the B-1 bomber the capability to launch hypersonic missiles.

(https://www.defensieforum.nl/Forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Falert5.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2021%2F09%2Fb-1-art-hypersonic.png&hash=7e7f049816bd528734272ad0fc179be12ef41344)

Robert Gass and Dan Ruder spoke to about 75 people at the Abilene Country Club.

Ruder, who is the B-1 advanced programs manager, disclosed that his company hopes to start development testing of the "load adaptive modular" pylon that will allow "two missiles to be attached to the bomber at the six (external) points"

Gass added that the plan is to have the B-1 carry both the boost-glide rocket and air-breathing variants of hypersonic missiles.

US Air Force one step closer to turning cargo planes into makeshift bombers

AIR WARFARE

Next month, the Air Force will see if it can launch a live cruise missile from a pallet that was air dropped by a cargo plane.

WASHINGTON: Next month the Air Force will conduct a capstone exercise for a program aiming to turn cargo planes into aerial bomb trucks, when a standard-looking pallet will be airdropped out of an MC-130J and launch a live cruise missile as it parachutes down through the air.

The demonstration will wrap up the first phase of the Air Force's Rapid Dragon program, the service's effort validating its "palletized munitions" concept, Dean Evans, the service's Rapid Dragon program manager, told Breaking Defense today.

In the early stages of a war with a sophisticated adversary like China, the Air Force believes the number of airstrikes being traded will make it difficult for airlift platforms to move people and equipment into threat zones. Further, the service has hypothesized that it may need even more strike capacity than it currently has with its fleet of fighters and bombers.

"The ability to cost-effectively deliver long-range standoff weapons en masse from non-traditional platforms expands warfighting flexibility and introduces new deterrence options," Evans said.

Or as Lt. Gen Clint Hinote, the Air Force's futurist, put it last year: "What we see is that no matter how big our bomber force is, the capacity that the joint force needs is always more and more."

That's where palletized munitions for airlift assets like cargo planes come in. The thinking is that the service can create a "smart pallet" that looks like the standard pallets used to roll equipment on and off aircraft like the C-130 or C-17, but can feed targeting and launch command information to the guided munitions contained inside of it.

After that pallet is airdropped from a cargo plane and begins its fall to the ground, the pallet would then launch multiple munitions, each intended for different targets and timed to safely separate from each other.

Most recently, the program conducted a successful flight demonstration Nov. 3 at White Sands Missile Range, N.M., where an MC-130J airdropped a pallet containing a long range cruise missile separation test vehicle — basically a cruise missile without an engine or warhead.

According to an Air Force Research Laboratory news release, the MC-130J crew received targeting data from a beyond-line-of-sight node and then transferred that information from the aircraft's onboard Battle Management System to the cruise missile test vehicle. The event was the first time that upload of data occurred with an unarmed cruise missile instead of an emulator, AFRL said.

Then, the MC-130J dropped a four-cell Rapid Dragon palletized system from its cargo bay. As the pallet was parachuting down, it sequentially launched the cruise missile test vehicle and three "mass simulants," which replicate the weight and shape of a cruise missile. The cruise missile test vehicle deployed its wings and tail seconds after release, began pulling up and then glided toward its target.

A demonstration planned for December will use a live cruise missile instead of an unarmed test vehicle and will conclude the first, developmental stage of the program, Evans said.

"The plan is to mature the capability from a developmental prototype to an operational prototype in the next phase," which will begin next month immediately following a successful demonstration, Evans said. "We will be integrating additional weapons/effects in the next phase of Rapid Dragon" and will test the pallet deployment system's ability to safely launch multiple weapons, he said.

The Nov. 3 demonstration was performed by an operational Air Force Special Operations Command aircrew, AFRL stated. Other participants included Naval Surface Warfare Center-Dahlgren; Standoff Munitions Application Center; Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control; Systima Technologies; and Safran Electronics & Defense, Parachutes USA.

Last year, Lockheed Martin received a $25 million contract for further work on the Rapid Dragon program. At the time, Scott Calloway, Lockheed's program director, told reporters its roll on/roll off smart pallet could be configured to carry up to 32 AGM-158B JASSM-ER (Joint-Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile-Extended Range) missiles on a C-17.

With new radar and engines in sight, the B-52 gets ready for 'largest modification in its history'

"There's a lot that can go wrong on the program management side," Col. Louis Ruscetta, senior materiel leader of the B-52 division, said of the bomber's upcoming modernization. "We have to try to manage and reduce what can go wrong."

At 70 years old, the venerable B-52 Stratofortress is getting a major facelift, what one Air Force official recently called the "largest modification program in its history," that the service hopes will keep the plane relevant to 2050 at least. That's if the service can juggle two major upgrades simultaneously — an ambitious goal for which the Air Force is still formulating a strategy.

In the middle of the decade, the service will begin outfitting the B-52 with the Raytheon AN/APG-79 radar used by the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. At roughly the same time, it will embark on an ambitious engine replacement program, swapping the bomber's aging Pratt & Whitney TF33 engines with a version of the Rolls-Royce F130.

How the AESA radar is improving the B-52's situational awareness and maintenance time

A key component of the B-52 modernization is upgrading its radar system. Boeing recently awarded Raytheon Intelligence & Space, a Raytheon Technologies business, a contract to provide a new radar. The new radar will replace a mechanically scanned system that was fitted to the aircraft in the 80s with a new active electronically scanned array, or AESA, system.

The AESA radar offers a new range of capabilities. The current radar must be pointed in the direction of its targets in order to identify them. The new radar, by contrast, can find targets in multiple directions very quickly, as well as find targets smaller than those the current system can find. The new radar will also enable B-52 crew members to find targets at standoff ranges for the first time ever.

The biggest advantage of the new radar, however, is its reduced maintenance.

"The decision to upgrade the radar was based on increasing reliability as the U.S. Air Force continues to modernize the B-52," said Justin Busse, B-52 radar modernization program director at Raytheon Intelligence & Space.

The AESA can operate for an expected 900 hours before requiring maintenance – far longer than the B-52's current system.

New Image Shows How B-52 Will Look After Engine, Radar Replacement

A new image from Boeing shows how the B-52H will look after a series of modifications that the Air Force has said are significant enough to warrant re-designating the aircraft as the B-52J or K. The image was rendered from a digital prototyping model and is likely to closely resemble the final version.

Prominent in the image are the larger-diameter fans of the new F130 engines to be built by Rolls-Royce North America. Also noteworthy are how the engine nacelles, each containing two engines, are set higher and farther forward than the nacelles for the Pratt & Whitney TF-33 engines with which the B-52 has been flying since 1962. The new engines are set higher in part to provide more ground clearance. The need to validate how the new engines/nacelles will behave in relation to the wing and flap system is a major part of the flight testing program set to start in the next two years.

The nose of the aircraft will also be streamlined, losing the blisters that currently house the forward-looking infrared/electro-optical viewing system to facilitate the new radar, a variant of the AN/APG-79 used on the Boeing F/A-18EF SuperHornet. The FLIR/EO system was used for terrain avoidance and battle assessment, but some of those functions will migrate to the radar or already have shifted to either a Litening or Sniper targeting pod, which the B-52 can carry on a wing pylon.

In addition to the engines and radar, the B-52 is getting an updated cockpit, a ?hybrid? analog-digital engine control system, communications and navigation enhancements, and the deletion of one crew member station.

Also prominent in the images are two large humps on top of the fuselage, near the wing roots. A Boeing spokesperson said the humps are ?not new and not part of our program,? but they seem larger than any fairings or blisters now in that area, which house GPS and other comm/nav equipment. Pressed, the Boeing spokesperson said, ?I have nothing for you on that,? a phrase that sometimes indicates a classified issue. The humps? location and size might suggest a larger, anti-jam GPS antenna.

New engines were the major reason the B-52G became the B-52H in 1962, Col. Louise Ruscetta, senior materiel leader for the B-52, said in August.  But given that the combined engine/radar program represents ?the largest modification in the history? of the B-52, a new designation is likely, Ruscetta said. There may be an interim designation because the radar will be installed before the engines and will drive a change in operating and maintenance manuals and documentation. The documents will change again once the engines have been replaced. The Air Force and Air Force Global Strike Command are looking at ?how do we define? the new variant or variants, Ruscetta said.

The new radar is an active electronically scanned array type as used by fighters. It will take up far less room than the old mechanically scanned system, so the change will create growth space for electronic warfare functions, Ruscetta said. At least some of the B-52 fleet will be operational with both new radars and new engines by the end of the decade.

Rolls-Royce Offers Peek At The B-52?s New Engines Undergoing Testing

The B-52 re-engining saga goes back many decades, but it?s finally happening in the form of Rolls-Royce?s TF130 turbofan.

Now that testing has begun, Rolls-Royce has provided first looks at the F130 turbofan engines in their dual-pod configuration that will replace the outdated TF33 engines currently equipping the U.S. Air Force?s B-52H Stratofortress fleet. Rolls-Royce has offered this imagery as part of an update on the years-long effort to re-engine and modernize the service?s bombers. In fact, the fight to get the B-52 new engines is a saga that dates back decades.

A Rolls-Royce press release explains that testing of the F130 engines under the Air Force?s B-52 Commercial Engine Replacement Program (CERP) is being carried out at the company?s outdoor test facility at NASA's Stennis Space Center in Mississippi. The current round of testing will focus primarily on both crosswind aerodynamic flow and confirming that the engine?s digital controls system can operate as intended.

It?s Official: The Re-Engined B-52 Will be the B-52J

Once they receive their new Rolls Royce F130 engines, B-52Hs will become B-52Js, according to the Air Force?s fiscal 2024 budget documents.

The designation resolves a question that had been debated for several years, as the B-52 undergoes some of the most significant improvements in the H model?s 61-year service life.

?Any B-52H aircraft modified with the new commercial engines and associated subsystems are designated as B-52J,? the Air Force said in justification documents for its 2024 budget request.

The service had been considering various designations for the improved Stratofortress, because in addition to new engines, the B-52 will also be receiving a new radar, as well as new communications and navigation equipment and weapons, among other improvements intended to keep it credible and capable through the 2050s.

Given the number of major changes, Global Strike Command had considered using interim designations??J? model aircraft would have then become B-52Ks.

One of the improved weapons the B-52 was supposed to get was the hypersonic AGM-183 Air-Launched Rapid Response Weapon (ARRW), but in the 2024 budget, the Air Force said it?s moving to ?close out? the program after a couple more tests and shift its emphasis to the Hypersonic Attack Cruise Missile (HACM).

The B-52 re-engining project name has also evolved from the Commercial Engine Replacement Program (CERP) to CERP RVP, for Rapid Virtual Prototyping, the Air Force said in its budget request.

The re-engining effort was launched as a mid-tier acquisition in order to save time and get capability sooner. The program will become a Major Capability Acquisition at the end of the RVP effort, the Air Force said.

The upgrades will also open the door to other changes, USAF noted.

?As B-52 CERP brings additional capability to the B-52, emerging security/certification requirements (nuclear hardening, cyber security, program protection, etc.) will also need to be addressed. Several concurrent aircraft upgrades during the B-52 CERP may necessitate temporary facilities or facility upgrades/ modifications.?

The Air Force is asking for nearly $3 billion in B-52 procurement across the future years defense plan, starting with a modest $65.82 million in 2024 but ramping up to over $1.1 billion each in 2027 and 2028.

Of the overall amount, the Radar Modernization Program alone claims $845.9 million, peaking in ?27 at $271.95 million. Separately?not included in the procurement account?research, development, test, and evaluation associated with the Radar Modernization Program is requested at $371 million, ending in 2026. The RMP procurement funding is to procure 74 radar kits, three training systems kits, and two engineering and manufacturing development kits.

The new radar is a variant of the Raytheon AN/APG-79, an active, electronically-scanned array (AESA) radar used on the Navy?s F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter. It replaces the APG-166, which the Air Force says suffers from severe ?vanishing vendor? issues and parts problems that will make the radar ?unsupportable? before 2030.

Besides a dramatic improvement in maintainability, the AESA will add significant new capabilities in search, ground mapping, and electronic warfare. The new radar?s physical footprint is also much smaller than the system it replaces, creating growth capacity in the front of the aircraft. The B-52?s nose-mounted electro-optical blisters will be removed and a new radome installed with the new radar.

The re-engining program is funded for $2.56 billion, all in the RDT&E budget, peaking at $650.5 million in 2025. The program seeks to replace the original-equipment Pratt & Whitney TF33 engines with Rolls Royce F130s. The change is expected to eventually pay for itself through 30 percent better fuel efficiency and elimination of engine overhauls, as the F130 will not need an overhaul for the duration of its expected life on the B-52 wing.

?Along with the new engines, CERP will replace associated subsystems, such as engine struts and nacelles, the electrical power generation system, and cockpit displays,? the Air Force said. ?The development, production and installation of new engines and related subsystems will replace the legacy equipment on all 76 B-52H aircraft.?

Including monies expended so far, the total cost of the B-52 CERP Middle Tier of Acquisition effort will be $1.32 billion, including RDT&E, the Air Force said.

The Air Force expects B-52Js with both new engines and new radars to be available for operational use before the end of the decade.

B-21 Raider's First Flight Still Set For 2023 After 'Power On' Milestone

The first pre-production B-21 Raider stealth bomber has been successfully "powered on," according to manufacturer Northrop Grumman. The company also says that is still expecting the B-21 to make its first flight later this year. This comes amid concerns about delays and cost growth in the program, which is a top priority for Northrop Grumman and the U.S. Air Force.

Rolls-Royce set to complete F130 engine tests for B-52J nuclear bomber

On September 7, 2023, Rolls-Royce announced that it is close to completing the first phase of testing for its F130 engines, designed for the U.S. Air Force's B-52J Stratofortress nuclear bombers. The company plans to conclude this phase by the end of 2023 and initiate flight tests in 2024. The F130 engines are expected to extend the operational lifespan of the B-52 by 30 years.

In September 2021, Rolls-Royce's F130 engines were selected by the Air Force to replace the existing powerplants in the B-52 fleet, with over 600 new engine deliveries expected. Testing has been conducted at NASA's Stennis Space Center in Mississippi. Rolls-Royce stated that it had met its initial objectives and gathered data that would be useful for the integration of the F130 engines into the B-52J. A critical evaluation of the project is planned for early 2024.

The engines will be manufactured at the company's facility in Indianapolis, with total production expected to exceed 600 units.

The new engines are expected to extend the lifespan of the B-52 by 30 years. The aircraft, which first took to the skies in the 1950s, celebrated the 70th anniversary of its maiden flight last April. The modernization will allow the B-52 Stratofortress to remain in service until the 2050s.

This engine is already in service with the U.S. Air Force, powering the C-37 and E-11 BACN aircraft.

Flight tests of the B-52 Stratofortress equipped with the new F130 engines are scheduled to begin in 2024 and are expected to continue until 2026. The U.S. Air Force is expected to receive more than 600 new F130 engines as part of this modernization effort.

The current version of the aircraft is known as the B-52H. After its modernization, the bomber will receive a new designation - B-52J.

On 10 November 2023, the Northrop Grumman B-21 Raider, the world's second stealth bomber, made its maiden flight. As expected, the Raider, with serial number 0001 and ED code flew from Northrop's facility at the Air Force's Plant 42 in Palmdale (CA) towards Edwards AFB (CA).

Although later than predicted (https://www.scramble.nl/military-news/usaf-s-raider-later-than-planned), Raider's first flight fulfills the forecast by manufacturer Northrop Grumman and the USAF that the new stealth bomber would fly before the end of 2023, and clears the way for the USAF to issue a Low-Rate Initial Production (LRIP) contract for the bomber.

The Raider, which will most probably receive the B-21A designation, is a strategic bomber under development for the USAF by Northrop Grumman. As part of the Long Range Strike Bomber (LRS-B) programme, it will become a long-range, stealth intercontinental strategic bomber for the USAF, able to deliver conventional and thermonuclear weapons. The USAF has the intention to replace its total inventory of Rockwell B-1B Lancers and Northrop Grumman B-2A Spirits by 2040.

Last year, on 22 October 2022, Scramble Magazine wrote about the unveiling of the Raider and Edwards being the planned home of "0001". As a side note, Scramble also mentioned that the B-21 would probably beat the Chinese future Xian H-20 stealth bomber roll-out (and subsequent first flight). Both are now a fact (https://www.scramble.nl/military-news/usaf-s-new-raider-will-be-unveiled).

Strikingly, no full serial has been released. Scramble assesses that it could be either 15-0001 or 16-0001. Any help with that would be most welcome.
