CONVINCING SIDEWINDER AIR-TO-GROUND MISSION

During a firing campaign with the new Laser Guided Sidewinder (LaGS) developed by Diehl Defence, all targets could be successfully engaged in Sweden in mid April. The laser-guided missiles fired from a Saab Gripen JAS 39 did not only hit the stationary ground targets but also the two moving targets – a target board measuring 2 by 3 meters pulled on a trailer as well as a driving SUV. All targets were successfully countered with one direct hit.

It was the second verification firing on the Northern Scandinavian test range in Vidsel, carried out by the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) in cooperation with the Swedish procurement agency FMV. The campaign was supported and accompanied by a Diehl Defence expert team.

Since the early 1960s, Diehl Defence has been producing different types of the American Sidewinder in relatively large quantities for the European NATO partners and still offers worldwide refurbishment and modernization for the internationally successful air-to-air missile today.

In 2016, Diehl Defence received a development contract for the reconstruction of AIM-9L-Sidewinders to a "motor driven short-range effector" in order to be able to engage targets on the ground instead of targets in the air. For this purpose, the missile's guidance and control section has been modernized fundamentally. The infrared detector and signal processing unit of the seeker were replaced by a SAL (Semi Active Laser) sensor with modern digital signal processing.

Through the use of modern technologies, a proven but aging weapon system could be upgraded for a new task at relatively low costs, extending the mission spectrum of flying weapon systems. After having fulfilled the requirements for LaGS during the firing campaign, Diehl Defence now hopes to receive the envisaged purchase contract.

Royal Norwegian Air Force Tested IRIS-T in Air-to-Ground Mission

08-12-2016 | Diehl Defence, Unternehmensnews, Produktnews

The functionality of the short-range air-to-air missile IRIS-T (Infra Red Imaging System Tail/Thrust Vector-Controlled), produced by Diehl Defence, Germany, and having been selected for the combat jets Eurofighter/Typhoon, F-16, EF-18, Tornado and Gripen, has again been extended.

After its initial optimization for air-to-air use, it has already been procured for short-range (IRIS-T SLS) ground-based air defence. Now functionality has been enhanced with an air-to-surface engagement capability. This basic air-to-ground capability provides the ability to acquire, track and engage individual ground targets like boats/ships, small buildings and vehicles and has been successfully verified in September 2016 by a test firing from a Norwegian F-16.

Now usable in air-to-ground engagements as well, IRIS-T is the worldwide best performing short-range air-to-air missile setting new standards in its market segment.

As part of full aircraft integration, IRIS-T supports a configuration with various sensor systems including radar and Helmet Mounted Cueing Systems (HMCS) ready to use in existing aircraft systems.

Diehl expected to finalise LaGS development in 2016

Key Points
• SAL modification to GCU gives AIM-9L Sidewinder an air-to-surface capability
• Diehl has developed software to enable an air-to surface capability for the IRIS-T AAM

Germany's Diehl BGT Defence is expected to finalise development of its Laser Guided Sidewinder (LaGS) air-to-surface solution for German Air Force Panavia Tornado IDS and Eurofighter Typhoon platforms in 2016 - some two years later than anticipated.

When the LaGS concept was unveiled in 2013, Diehl BGT Defence said that it planned to conduct the first air-launched live firing trials before the end of 2013 so as to have a production-ready design by 2014.

A Diehl BGT official told IHS Jane's that the company has now completed a series of successful captive carry tests of LaGS on a Panavia Tornado IDS to demonstrate the SAL lock-on capability, but to date has not conducted any live firing trials. These could now slip to late 2016 or to 2017.

A company-funded development, LaGS provides for an innovative re-role of the AIM-9L Sidewinder air-to-air missile (AAM) as a precision air-to-surface system. The LaGS solution replaces the AIM-9L's infrared (IR) seeker with a new semi-active laser seeker and a new sapphire dome, both developed by Diehl. The rest of the missile - including the WDU-17/B 9.5-kg annular blast/fragmentation continuous rod warhead, solid-propellant rocket motor, fins, and actuators - remains the same. The LaGS retains the DSU-15A/B Active Optical Target Detector laser proximity fuze, which will be de-activated for detonation on impact.

This adaptation is delivered through a modified forward guidance and control unit (GCU), which is form-and-fit identical to the standard Sidewinder, thus mitigating acquisition and integration costs. Accordingly, LaGS can be carried on all platforms and weapon stations cleared for AIM-9L series weapons.

Diehl is marketing LaGS as a day/night precision capability for close air support/urban close air support operations in a time-sensitive targeting environment.

Singapore Airshow 2014: Diehl confident Germany ready to approve ground-attack Sidewinder

James Hardy, Singapore - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly

11 February 2014

Diehl BGT's Laser-Guided Sidewinder (LaGS) will enter service with the Luftwaffe in 2015-16 if the German government green-lights funds for its development, a company official told IHS Jane'sat the Singapore Airshow 2014.

Gerhard Dussler, head of marketing for Airborne Systems at Diehl BGT, said the programme to retool legacy AIM-9L Sidewinders for a ground-attack role was in the development phase but would move forward if, as expected, the German government provided funds. "Indications are strong and clear that the government will sign", he said.

Describing it as a "sexy solution" for the Eurofighter Typhoon, Dussler said international marketing for the LaGS programme, which modifies the AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missile by replacing its infrared guidance system with a semi-active laser (SAL) seeker and guidance unit, would start once the German contract was signed.
