De AIM-120D is het topmodel van alle AIM-120 varianten. Op papier is het de concurrent van de Meteor. Op termijn zal de AIM-260 de AIM-120 aanvullen en/of vervangen.

Integratie van de Meteor op de F-35B (RAF/RN FAA) en misschien de F-35A is afhankelijk van de Block 4 upgrade.

Misschien kon MBDA de Meteor voorraad niet voldoende op tijd aanvullen. Beide landen waren al bekend met oudere uitvoeringen van de AIM-120. Het zou nog vreemder zijn als Zweden de AIM-120-D3 had gekozen. Die variant is de werkelijke Meteor concurrent.
