Van de grondlak tot en met de welkomst taart. Het is wat veel. Toch wens ik natuurlijk de Belgische luchtmacht alle geluk toe met de nieuwe apparaten.

Maar wat moeten ze anders, zoveel positief is er niet, anders is er alleen negatief nieuws over defensie, zal ze al wel genoeg steken dat Luxemburg met de eer gaat lopen als eerste te zijn.

15de Wing ontvangt de eerste A400m op Melsbroek.

Op vrijdag 9 oktober zal op de militaire luchthaven te Melsbroek het nieuwe Luxemburgse A400M transportvliegtuig voor de 15de Wing Luchttransport landen. Dit is het eerste van acht toestellen voor strategische en tactische luchttransport dat Melsbroek als thuisbasis zal krijgen. De aankomst zal gepaard gaan met een 'welcome flight' over het grondgebied van Luxemburg en België.

Komt er volgende week aan, op zeer korte termijn gevolgd door de eerste van 7 Belgische. Gaat eerst een touchdown doen in Luxemburg omdat het toestel daar geregistreerd zal staan.

Belgian Defense Again Sends F-16s to Middle East

Implementing a government decision taken in June, the Belgian Air Force on Sept. 29 will again deploy four F-16 fighters to an un unidentified air base in the Middle East, from where they will support coalition operations against Daesch.

On Tuesday, September 29, four F-16s will take off from Florennes air base to fly to the Middle East, as part of the international coalition's Operation Inherent Resolve against the Islamic State.

Defense is implementing the government's decision of June 26, 2020. Belgium's commitment falls within the framework of resolution 2249 of the United Nations Security Council of 2015, which refers to the global threat posed by Daesh to international peace and security.

The government's decision provides for an operational commitment for a period of one year.

A detachment of around 100 Belgian soldiers will support the deployment of the aircraft. All members of the detachment have been deployed to the area in recent weeks. Prior to deployment, all members of the detachment were placed in corona quarantine. The first rotation was mainly composed of personnel from the Florennes air base.

This new deployment is necessary to avoid a resurgence of the IS. The aircraft, pilots and support personnel will operate from a base in the Middle East, from where they can intervene in support of coalition forces on the ground.

Contracts For Sept. 24, 2020

The Boeing Co., St. Louis, Missouri, has been awarded a $2,239,707,532 fixed-price-incentive, firm-target contract for the Small Diameter Bomb Increment I weapon program.  This contract provides for a guaranteed minimum Lot 15 award and a five-year ordering period for Small Diameter Bomb Increment I, focused lethality munition, containers and carriages for the Department of Defense and Foreign Military Sales partner nations.  Work will be performed in St. Louis, Missouri, and is expected to be complete by September 2027.  This contract involves Foreign Military Sales to Australia, Belgium, Israel, Japan, Korea, Netherlands and Norway.  This award is result of a sole-source acquisition.  Fiscal 2018, 2019, and 2020 missile procurement funds in the amount of $247,508,960 are being obligated at the time of award.  Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, is the contracting activity (FA8672-20-D-0001).

MQ-9B SeaGuardian maritime tests flights concluded off the coast of California on September 11th. They can probably be seen as the next step toward a worldwide export success. Indeed, if the first variant of the MQ-9 Predator-B mainly served as an ISR platform for above ground missions, the new MQ-9B SkyGuardian/SeaGuardian is likely to find much more customers in its maritime variant.

Belgium buys Dutch decommissioned F-16 for armorer training

The Belgian army has decided to buy back from the Netherlands a decommissioned F-16 fighter jet which will be used for the training of armorers of the Air component in the assembly of the various armaments (bombs and missiles) in its arsenal, Belga news agency revealed.

The announcement of the sale was the subject of a letter on August 20 to the Second Chamber (the lower house of parliament in The Netherlands) by the Dutch Secretary of State for Defense, Barbara Visser. This is an F-16 withdrawn from service after reaching its structural limit - and therefore no longer airworthy. The aircraft purchased in the Netherlands will be transferred to Belgium by road - in October, according to the specialized site A l'Avant Garde - and will only serve as a training platform in the handling of weapons.

België investeert 300 miljoen euro voor komst van F-35

De federale regering heeft een investering van 300 miljoen euro goedgekeurd met het oog op de komst van de nieuwe F-35 gevechtsvliegtuigen in Florennes en Kleine Brogel. Dat heeft minister van Defensie Philippe Goffin (MR) maandag bekendgemaakt.

De fondsen worden uitgetrokken voor de modernisering, uitbreiding en beveiliging van de twee luchtbases. De aankondiging gebeurde in Florennes, waar Goffin op bezoek was samen met zijn collega van Begroting David Clarinval.

De investering moet de bouw mogelijk maken van loodsen op elke basis die zestien toestellen kunnen huisvesten, samen met een onderhoudsloods voor zes vliegtuigen. De F-35 wordt verwacht vanaf april 2025. De investering omvat ook de plaatsing van al bestelde simulatoren. Er komt ook een belangrijk veiligheidsdispositief.

De werken zouden begin 2022 starten na een offerteoproep. Bedoeling is dat de werken ten laatste half 2024 beëindigd zijn. Met de nodige certificaten zou alles in 2025 in dienst zijn.

'Driehonderd miljoen is een aanzienlijk bedrag, maar er zal een grote return zijn voor de Belgische economie, op het vlak van aankopen, btw, tewerkstelling en sociale wetgeving. Dat wordt geraamd op 90 procent', zei minister Goffin.

Er werd tevens een investering van 24 miljoen euro bevestigd met het oog op de komst van de vier Male-drones ('Medium Altitude Long Endurance') MQ-9B SkyGuardian. De eerste twee exemplaren worden in het eerste trimester van 2023 verwacht in Florennes. (Belga)
