BAE Systems Awarded Next Generation Launcher Design Contract

BAE Systems was awarded a $37 million U.S. Department of Defense Ordnance Technology Consortium (DOTC) contract to design the Next Generation Evolved SeaSparrow Missile Launch System (NGELS).

The company will support the NATO SeaSparrow Program Office (NSPO) to design and deliver prototype deck launching systems to support the U.S. Navy and allied countries with the Evolved SeaSparrow Missile (ESSM) ship self-defense system.

NGELS is a deck-mounted, fixed-angle launcher that leverages BAE Systems' Adaptable Deck Launcher (ADL) concept to store and launch ESSMs from Mk 25 missile canisters, which are also produced by BAE Systems. Easily integrated into large deck platforms, NGELS will support the fielding of the latest and most highly-capable ESSM missile, the Block 2 variant, a multi-role surface-to-air and surface-to-surface missile capable of protecting aircraft carriers and other flat-decked ships against advanced air and surface threats. NGELS will use proven Mk 41 Vertical Launching System subsystems to deliver surface-to-air and surface-to-surface defense capabilities to aircraft carriers and amphibious ships in order to defeat missile threats.

Laten we dus eens kijken naar de leeftijd van de S (Kortenaer) klasse boten die nog in de vaart zijn:

- F462 ROL. Dit is de voormalige F807 Kortenaer van de Nederlandse Marine, het eerste schip van de gelijknamige klasse, met de start van de bouw op 8 april 1975, dus 48 jaar geleden. Het is in 1997 overgenomen door PN en heeft twintig jaar geleden de bekende beperkte modernisering ondergaan.
- F459 ADRIAS. Ex F808 Callenburgh, met bouwstart op 2 september 1975. Verworven door PN in 1992 en eveneens gemoderniseerd.
- F461 NAVARINO. Voormalige F809 Jan Hendrik Van Kinsbergen, met bouwstart 2 september 1975. Verworven door PN in 1992 en gemoderniseerd.
- F460 AEGEAN. Voormalige F810 Joost Banckert, met bouwstart op 25 februari 1976. Verworven door PN in 1992 en gemoderniseerd.
- F45O GRIEKENLAND. Begonnen met de bouw op 1 juli 1977, bedoeld als F812 Pieter Florisz, maar in 1980 door PN gekocht terwijl ze in het dok lagen. Gemoderniseerd.
- F451 LIMNOS. Begonnen met de bouw op 13 juni 1978, bedoeld als F813 Witte De With, maar in 1980 door PN gekocht terwijl ze in het dok lagen. Gemoderniseerd.
- F465 THEMISTOKLES. Dit is de voormalige F823 Philips Van Almonde, waarvan de bouw startte op 1 oktober 1977. Aangekocht door PN in 2003. Niet gemoderniseerd.
- F466 OVERWINNING ZEGEL. Ex-F824 Willem Bloys Van Treslong, bouwjaar 1 mei 1978. Verworven door PN in 2003. Niet gemoderniseerd.
- F464 KANARIE. Gebouwd op 16 november 1979, is ze ook het jongste schip in leeftijd van de klasse in dienst in de PN, aangezien de F463 BOUMBULINA, gebouwd op 21 januari 1981, met pensioen ging op 18 februari 2013. Ze is de voormalige - F825 Jan Van Brakel, en werd verworven in 2003, terwijl het niet gemoderniseerd is.

Produktionsstart der neuen Tankschiffe für die Deutsche Marine

Met de symbolische inbedrijfstelling van de machines vandaag begint traditiegetrouw de bouw van twee nieuwe brandstofleveranciers voor de Duitse marine. De twee "drijvende tankstations" zullen naar verwachting vanaf 2025 de schepen van de Rhön-klasse vervangen.

"Met de start van de productie van de nieuwe brandstofleveranciers is de vernieuwing van onze tankers in gang gezet. Zo zorgen we voor de duurzaamheid van maritieme taskforces door middel van militaire brandstofvoorraden op volle zee, en voldoen we tegelijkertijd aan de huidige milieubescherming normen en vooral een belangrijke bijdrage leveren aan de nationale en alliantiedefensie ", zegt Annette Lehnigk-Emden, voorzitter van het federale bureau voor uitrusting, informatietechnologie en gebruik van de Bundeswehr (BAAINBw). "Daarnaast ben ik blij dat met de NVL, maar ook de Meyer Werft, twee Duitse scheepswerven met hun knowhow een belangrijke bijdrage leveren aan het in stand houden van de capaciteit."

Met een lengte van 173 meter en een waterverplaatsing van 20.000 ton zijn de tankers van de serie 707 nu aanzienlijk groter dan hun voorgangers. Dit komt ook tot uiting in de prestatiegegevens en mogelijkheden. De nieuwe marinetankers zijn beschermd tegen de inzet van NBC-oorlogsmiddelen, hebben een cockpit voor helikopters en hebben een capaciteit van ruim 12.000 kubieke meter vliegtuig- en dieselbrandstof. Met de ingebouwde ballastwaterbehandelingssystemen en moderne uitlaatgasnabehandeling kunnen de schepen bovendien volgens de huidige milieunormen worden geëxploiteerd.

De brandstofleveranciers krijgen een bemanning van 42 personen, met de mogelijkheid om nog eens 23 mensen aan boord te nemen. Ondanks hun grootte en waterverplaatsing kunnen de tankers dankzij het krachtige voortstuwingssysteem een ��topsnelheid van 18 knopen halen en hebben ze een bereik tot 8.000 zeemijl. Met hun vermogen om marine-eenheden op zee en dus buiten havens van brandstof te voorzien, vergroten ze op de lange termijn het operatiebereik van de Duitse marine en internationale partners.

De grootste veranderingen aan het ontwerp zijn :
- Het ontwerp is verlengd met 2 m in de hangaar & het vliegdek is verkleind.
- Door deze ingrepen is het mogelijk om 2 Merlin helikopters mee te nemen in de hangaar.
- Missionbay achter de hangaar is vergroot en nu over de hele breedte van het schip vergelijkbaar met de Type 26 fregatten.
- Onder het helidek is de missionbay ook uitgebreid met een slipway en zij ramp voor het inzetten van kleine (onbemande) systemen.
- Het VLS is verplaatst naar de B-positie waardoor er slechts 16 VLS cellen beschikbaar zijn.

New Naval Vessels For Denmark

The Danish Ministry of Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation (DALO) has signed an agreement with Danske Patruljeskibe K/S ? a consortium founded by Terma, Odense Maritime Technology and PensionDanmark ? on the scheme design for new naval vessels for the Danish Armed Forces.

De laatste dagen heb ik zitten kijken naar dit ontwerp en ik moet zeggen dat ik het een prachtig ontwerp vind voor een grote zeegaande OPV. Zeer multifunctioneel met haar 30 container posities waarvan er 23 geschikt zijn voor the Cube modules.

Misschien is het niet haalbaar om ze 1 op 1 te verwerven voor onze vOPV maar in ieder geval een hele goede basis wat mij betreft om hier naar te kijken. Mocht het LPX concept uiteraard niets meer gaan worden en we echt weer naar OPV's terug keren. Mocht het LPX wel doorgang vinden is het concept hierachter helemaal niet slecht om mee te nemen in de LPX, zeer modulair en veel ruimte voor (missie) containers.

Nieuw snelvuurmachinegeweer in uitgebreide raamovereenkomst

FMV heeft een raamovereenkomst getekend met Equipnor AB voor snelvuurmachinegeweren voor de amfibische bataljons. Het systeem zal in eerste instantie Stridsbåt 90 bewapenen, maar kan uiteindelijk ook relevant zijn voor andere delen van de Zweedse strijdkrachten.

Het machinegeweer, vervaardigd door Dillon Aero Inc., wordt elektrisch aangedreven en kan ongeveer 3.000 schoten per minuut afvuren. Het biedt betere omstandigheden om doelen te raken wanneer het schietplatform in beweging is en is wenselijk wanneer bijvoorbeeld slagschepen zich in ruwe zee bevinden. De hoge vuursnelheid biedt ook betere voorwaarden om in korte tijd plaatselijk vuursuperioriteit te bereiken, wat het voor de eenheid gemakkelijker maakt om haar gewone gevechtstaken uit te voeren.

Het proces van het verwerven van een nieuw ondersteuningswapen voor de amfibische bataljons begon al in 2012 toen de FMV de eerste tests van verschillende systemen uitvoerde. Sindsdien hebben verschillende tests gevolgd om ervoor te zorgen dat het aangeschafte systeem geschikt is voor een reeks verschillende gevechtssituaties.

- We zien dat dit systeem de vuurkracht van een individuele eenheid aanzienlijk zal vergroten. Het werkt goed samen met bestaande apparatuur en zal een welkome aanvulling zijn voor de Zweedse strijdkrachten, zegt Patrik Almqvist, projectmanager bij FMV.

Moderne uitrusting voor amfibie-eenheden

De amfibische bataljons zitten midden in een grote verandering en de missie van FMV is om de eenheden uit te rusten met moderne apparatuur. Binnen Amfibisch Bataljon 2030, zoals de investering in amfibie-eenheden heet, wordt een aantal verschillende systemen aangeschaft en bevindt het merendeel zich momenteel in een voorbereidings- of productdefinitiefase. In die context zal het nieuwe machinegeweer een van de eerste systemen zijn die worden aangeschaft en die de capaciteiten van de eenheden op korte termijn al zal vergroten.

De overeenkomst is een raamovereenkomst die door de hele krijgsmacht kan worden gebruikt voor oproepen.

- Er is een fantastische inzet geweest van alle betrokkenen. We hebben een goede teamgeest gecreëerd en zijn erin geslaagd om ondanks een strakke planning onze doelen op tijd te bereiken, zegt Frida Ollas, strategisch inkoper bij FMV.

De raamovereenkomst omvat een volledige systeemoplossing en er is de mogelijkheid om naar behoefte extra accessoires zoals vizieren, laserpointers en andere apparatuur aan te vragen.

In eerste instantie loopt de overeenkomst tot 2026 met de optie om telkens twee jaar te verlengen. De totale waarde bedraagt ��ongeveer SEK 300 miljoen tijdens de contractperiode.

Italy Joins France And The UK For FC/ASW Program ( en toen waren het er 3 )

Italy, France and the United Kingdom (UK) signed a letter of intent (LoI) on June 20, 2023 during the Paris Air Show. With this LoI, the French-British Future Cruise and Anti-Ship Weapon (FC/ASW) programme will be opened to the Italian partner.

According to a French Ministry of the Armed Forces press release, the dialogue phase that will now take place between the three countries will lay the foundations for the development phase to come. "The objective for each of the three countries is to have an operational deep strike capability by 2030. This new phase of the FC/ASW program will strengthen the industrial and technological base of European defense around MBDA, the European leader in the field of missiles" – The press release reads.

The objective of the FC/ASW Programme is to replace from 2028, the capabilities currently in service within the Royal Navy, the Royal Air Force (RAF), Marine Nationale (French Navy), and Armée de l'air et de l'espace (French Air Force) for anti-ship and deep strike missions.

The concept phase, amounting to around 100 million euros, is financed equally by France and the United Kingdom; it is also shared equally in workload between MBDA France and MBDA UK.

2022: Launch of the evaluation phase, which focuses on the rise in maturity of the two selected concepts (stealthy and subsonic or supersonic)

The case for Italy joining FC/ASW
Joining the FC/ASW program makes sense for Italy and should not come as a surprise: the Italian Air Force will have to replace in the future its in-service Storm Shadow land attack cruise missiles (which are currently, as for France and the UK, under a midlife upgrade programme) while the Chief of Italian Navy (Marina Militare) in 2020, Vice Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone (now Admiral and Chief of the Defense Staff since October 2021) highlighted the need for a credible deep strike capability to be provided for the future destroyer project (the over 10,000 tons class DDX) as all as for the future submarines (Type 212NFS).

Italy could bring some know-how and technology to the French and British partners: As part of the Teseo Mk2/E program, MBDA Italy is currently developing a very advanced dual-mode homing head section which will feature both a new generation coherent Radio-Frequency (RF) seeker with ECCM capability and a Electro-Optic (EO) sensor. According to Italian journalist (and Naval News regular contributor) Luca Peruzzi, the RF seeker co-developed by MBDA together with Leonardo, will feature AESA (active electronically scanned array) technology provided by the latter company. During the Seafuture 2023 conference and exhibition, MBDA and the Italian Navy gave an update on the Teseo Mk2/E programme, pointing out the RF seeker development is on schedule alongside the overall weapon system.

About FC/ASW
Following the Lancaster House agreement of 2010, France and the United Kingdom launched in 2017 a joint program with the goal to replace their cruise and anti-ship missiles circa 2030.

Named FC/ASW for Future Cruise/Anti-Ship Weapon (or FMAN/FMC for futur missile anti-navire/futur missile de croisière in French), the program is led by European missile leader MBDA. The FC/ASW aims to replace the air launched Scalp/Storm Shadow as well as the air and ship launched Exocet and Harpoon anti-ship missiles currently in service with French and British air forces and navies.

The FC/ASW seeks to develop a new generation of deep strike and anti-ship missiles by 2030. It aims at replacing the capabilities provided by Storm Shadow/ SCALP air launched cruise missile in operational service in the UK and France as well as the Exocet anti-ship missile in France and the Harpoon anti-ship missile in the UK.

MBDA announced the successful achievement of the FC/ASW (Future Cruise/Anti-Ship Weapon) "Key Review" phase, jointly conducted with the British Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) and the French Defense Procurement Agency (DGA) in 2019. In a written parliamentary question Jeremy Quin, British Minister of State for the Ministry of Defence revealed that the FC/ASW will equip both navies, Royal Navy and French Navy (Marine Nationale) starting 2028.

In the meantime, the UK selected Kongsberg's Naval Strike Missile as an interim solution in November 2022. Eleven Type 23 frigates and Type 45 destroyers will be fitted with the sea-skimming Naval Strike Missile, capable of knocking out major enemy warships at ranges of more than 100 miles away. The Naval Strike Missile will plug the gap between Harpoon and the advent of its permanent successor, the FC/ASW.

- In June 2021, the signatory parties to the defence agreement decided to initiate a development project for a new type of naval vessel for the Danish Armed Forces, which must be able to secure Danish sovereignty at sea and solve marine environmental tasks.
- In April 2022, The Danish Ministry of Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation (DALO) announced that it wishes to acquire the new vessels from Danske Patruljeskibe K/S in a full-service supplier model, including design, integration of systems, construction and maintenance for an initial period.
- In June 2023, an agreement has been reached between DALO and Danske Patruljeskibe K/S on a scheme design, forming the basis for the acquisition and production of the new naval vessels.
