FMV to Renovate Armed Forces Tanks and Combat Vehicles

Over 350 Swedish tanks and armored combat vehicles are to be renovated. Older components will be replaced and a new battle management system fitted. The assignment goes to Swedish HB Development and to Krauss-Maffei Wegmann of Germany.

FMV has decided to sign a contract with the Sweden-based company HB Development (a subsidiary of BAE Systems—Ed.)for the renovation of 262 Combat Vehicles 90 (CV90) and with the German company Krauss-Maffei Wegmann for the renovation of 88 Tank 122 (Leopard 2s—Ed.), and eight tank recovery vehicles.

The renovation will be carried out over the next eight years.

"We will partly replace the components have reached their technical lifetime or are obsolete, that is, those components that it is no longer possible to procure on the market. And ,secondly, we will replace the old command and control system in the tanks," said Peter Elmlund, head of Procurement and Logistics for ground equipment at FMV.

CV 90 Components Are Replaced
The components that will be replaced include batteries and parts of the electrical system of combat vehicles. The M39 machine gun fitted to the Combat Vehicle 90s will also be replaced.

The old TCCS (Tactical Command and Control System) battle management system in the tanks will be entirely replaced. In its stead, a Battlefield Management System will be installed.

It will among other things give the opportunity to keep track of where their own troops are located, making it easier to navigate and provide the opportunity to provide their own situational awareness to others. For example, if one vehicle discovers the enemy, its position will be transmitted to all others.

Battle Serviceable
Inside the tanks and in the CV90s there will be a lot of changes. Among other things, a lot of computers and monitors will be installed.

"The renovation is about maintaining the vehicles in battle usable condition for many years to come," says Peter Elmlund.

Half of all vehicles will be renovated by the two industrial companies, while repair kits for the other half will be taken up for renovation carried out at FMV's own workshops.

.../...

Estonia has only purchased the hulls of the CV90s from Norway, as the CV9030N variant of the Norwegian IFV uses a different (30 mm) cannon from the 35 mm cannon of the Dutch CV90 IFVs that Estonia already purchased. Instead, Estonia is planning to convert these additional Norwegian CV90 hulls into combat support (CS) and combat service support (CSS) vehicle variants. They will complement the CV9035 IFVs within the Scout battalion of the Estonian 1st Infantry Brigade, the country's only full-readiness professional military unit.

Norway Sells Used CV90 Hulls to Estonia

State Secretary Øystein Bø in the Ministry of Defence today met with secretary general of the Estonian defense ministry, Jonatan Vseviov, in connection with his visit to Norway.

One of the points on the agenda for the meeting was the signing of a contract for the sale of 35 used CV90 hulls to NATO member Estonia. The hulls are being sold because Norway is purchasing new CV90 armored tracked combat vehicles and upgrading its existing fleet.

Estonia will build on the hulls of logistics and support vehicles and use them along with their existing CV90 combat vehicles obtained from the Netherlands.

"Overall, this will provide the Estonian army significantly increased operational capability. We are pleased that in this way we can help to strengthen Estonia's defense. This will contribute to our overall security in NATO and in the region," said State Secretary Øystein Bø.

Bo and Vseviov also discussed the security situation in the Nordic-Baltic region, cyber defense, Nordic-Baltic and bilateral defense cooperation.

Estonia buys extra CV90s from Norway    ( 44 ex-NL CV90-35 MKIII  + 35 ex-NO CV90-30 MKI = 79 CV90)

Key Points
•Estonia has bought 35 CV90 vehicle hulls from Norway
•The supplementary vehicles are in addition to the 44 CV90s purchased from the Netherlands in 2014

Estonia has bought additional CV90 armoured fighting vehicles (AFV) for its armed forces, signing a contract for 35 more CV90 hulls from Norway on 8 January.

The additional units will complement the 44 CV9035NL infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) that Estonia purchased from the Netherlands in December 2014.

The contract was signed on 8 January during a visit to Norway by Jonatan Vseviov, the undersecretary for defence planning at the Estonian Ministry of Defence (MoD).
