The @GD_LandSystems M10 Booker is not a derivative of the ASCOD platform, but an all-new design. The hull has well-sloped armour, an 800 hp diesel driveline and @Horstman_Group hydro-pneumatic struts. The 105 mm gun based on the UK ROF L7 and is mounted in an Abrams-based turret.

What is especially interesting about the M10 Booker is that the same underlying @GD_LandSystems chassis has been used for the Company?s Optionally Manned Fighting Vehicle (OMFV) contender. Anecdotal reports suggest this is equally as good as the M10.

In other words, with MPF and OMFV, @GD_LandSystems has developed a new medium weight tracked platform that can form the basis of an entire family of vehicles. The underlying chassis has better protection than CV90, better mobility and a fully digitised architecture.

Parera

But the Booker is much lighter than the newest versions of the Abrams tanks, which have 120mm main guns. The Army?s M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams tank weighs nearly 74 tons and the M10 will weigh about 42 tons, the service said. The M10 also will be significantly less expensive. The latest Abrams costs about $24 million per tank, but the Bookers are expected to cost about $12.9 million per vehicle, which includes spare parts and the costs to field and train for the new weapons, Dean said.

Analysis: What are combat capabilities of French AMX-10RC for Ukraine against Russian tanks

Analysis: The AMX-10RC combat vehicle that France will supply to Ukraine is not a main battle tank (MBT), but it offers several advantages compared to MBTs due to its design as a wheeled reconnaissance and fire support vehicle. There is no information about the variant of the AMX-10RC that France will provide to Ukraine. The AMX-10RCR is a modernized variant of the original AMX-10RC offering more mobility, firepower, and protection.

In terms of mobility, the AMX-10RC has a 6x6 wheel configuration, allowing it to traverse various types of terrain more easily and quickly than most tracked MBTs. Its top speed of around 85 km/h on roads and a range of approximately 800 km make it more agile and able to rapidly deploy to different locations.

As far as tactics are concerned, the AMX-10RC functions as a reconnaissance vehicle, enabling it to perform various missions such as scouting, target acquisition, and providing fire support to other units. This versatility allows it to serve multiple purposes on the battlefield, in contrast to MBTs which are primarily focused on engaging enemy armor.

Due to its smaller size and lighter weight compared to MBTs, the AMX-10RC has a reduced logistical footprint. This means it requires less fuel, maintenance, and transportation resources, making it easier and less expensive to deploy and operate. The wheeled configuration and lighter weight of the AMX-10RC make it easier to transport by air, rail, or road compared to heavier MBTs. This capability is advantageous when rapid deployment is required or when operating in theaters with limited infrastructure.

The AMX-10RCR features additional armor protection, including spall liners and armor plates, which improve survivability against small arms fire, artillery fragments, and mines. It is also equipped with a remotely operated weapon station (RWS), allowing the crew to operate the vehicle's machine gun without being exposed to enemy fire.

The mobility of the AMX-10RCR has been improved and the vehicle is equipped with a new powertrain, including a more powerful engine and a new transmission, resulting in better acceleration, speed, and overall mobility. The vehicle is also equipped with modernized sensors, including a new thermal imaging system for enhanced night vision capabilities. It also features an upgraded communication and battle management system for improved situational awareness, coordination with other units, and faster decision-making.

The AMX-10RC is armed with a 105 mm F2 rifled gun as its primary armament, capable of firing Armor-Piercing (AP) and High-Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT) rounds. While this weapon was considered potent when the vehicle was first introduced in the early 1980s, advancements in modern tank armor have diminished its effectiveness against contemporary main battle tanks (MBTs).

The AMX-10RC is not designed to engage main battle tanks (MBTs) directly, its firepower can still pose a threat to older or less advanced tanks, such as the Soviet-era T-72 and T-80. Depending on the specific variant and armor configuration of the T-72 and T-80, the 105 mm F2 gun might be able to penetrate the tanks' side or rear armor, especially when firing AP rounds. However, penetrating the frontal armor would be more challenging due to its increased thickness and the use of composite materials.

The AMX-10RC to fire HEAT rounds can also be an advantage against the T-72 and T-80, as these rounds can inflict damage through their shaped-charge effect, regardless of the armor thickness. However, the effectiveness of HEAT rounds can be reduced by reactive armor or other countermeasures, which are present on some variants of the T-72 and T-80.

The AMX-10RC's fire control system, which includes a laser rangefinder, day/night optics, and a ballistic computer, can help improve the accuracy of the 105 mm gun. Engaging the T-72 or T-80 from longer ranges or exploiting their weaker armor areas could improve the chances of a successful penetration. Due to its role as a reconnaissance and fire support vehicle, the AMX-10RC should avoid direct engagements with enemy MBTs whenever possible. Instead, it can use its mobility and flexibility to support friendly forces, provide intelligence, and exploit enemy weaknesses. In a tactical situation where the AMX-10RC has the element of surprise or can engage the T-72 or T-80 from their weaker flanks, it may have a better chance of success.

In conclusion, while the AMX-10RC's armament is not optimized for engaging modern MBTs, it may still pose a threat to older or less advanced tanks like the T-72 and T-80, especially when exploiting their vulnerabilities or engaging from advantageous positions. However, the primary role of the AMX-10RC is reconnaissance and fire support, and it should avoid direct engagements with enemy tanks whenever possible.

:big-smile: ;)

The new improved version of the Leopard 1 fitted with the Cockerill? 3105 weapon station has already successfully conducted firing on the move in March 2022.

Discover option of Leopard 1 tank upgrade for Ukraine fitted with new Cockerill 105mm turret

Discover the upgrade solution of Leopard 1 Main Battle Tank fitted with the latest generation of Cockerill 3105 Weapon station developed and designed by the Belgian company John Cockerill Defense. This upgrade could be an option to deliver old Leopard 1A5BE to Ukraine improved with the latest generation of weapon stations able to fire standard 105mm ammunition as well as anti-tank guided missiles.

The Belgian army operated around a hundred Leopard 1A5BE tanks, weighing 40 tons and armed with a 105mm cannon. It retired the last Leopard in late 2014. Some of these tanks were bought by the Belgian firm OIP which would still have around twenty Leopard 1A5BE.

Considering that the excellent chassis of the Leopard 1 would require minor refurbishment, a solution exists to simply replace the whole turret with its gun, fire control system, etc., which would remarkably update the tank in a single operation.

With this new improvement, the Leopard 1A5 will keep its high mobility capabilities on road and off-road but will be equipped with the latest generation of weapon systems designed and developed by the Belgian company John Cockerill Defense.

In March 2022, the Leopard 1 tank tracked chassis fitted with the Cockerill? 3105 weapon station has already conducted firing tests with impressive results and was entirely realized by the John Cockerill Defense team using their know-how of vehicle upgrades, to meet the need of armies to renew their fleet with a restricted budget.

The "standard" form of the Cockerill 3000 Series provides full digital weapon stabilization and digitalized fire control system to deliver a very high target-hit chance. The turret is also fitted with a thermal and day sight to provide 24-hour operation whether the vehicle is moving or static as well as external cameras providing 360? coverage. The turret is also equipped with eight smoke grenade dischargers, an active defense system, and acoustic gunshot detection.

The Cockerill? 3105 is a new generation of weapon station fully designed and developed by the Belgian company John Cockerill. This modern designed turret offers many advantages to empower modern combat vehicles, with protection, precision, and firepower necessary to fulfill the mission. The turret is armed with a 105mm High Pressure (HP) cannon and one 7.62mm coaxial machine gun.

The Cockerill? 3105 weapon station is armed with a NATO-standard Cockerill 105 mm high-pressure gun which is able to fire the latest generation of 105mm NATO ammunition as well as the Falarick 105 anti-tank guided missile. The turret is fitted with an automatic loading system with up to 16 ready-to-fire ammunition. Due to the use of this system, the crew in the turret is reduced to 2 men including the commander and gunner.

The FALARICK 105 is a high-explosive (HE), laser-guided, gun-launched anti-tank guided missile (GLATGM), designed to defeat fixed and moving modern armored targets, lightly tactical vehicles, and helicopters. The missile has a maximum firing range of 5,000 m and is able to penetrate ERA (Explosive Reactive Armor) with a thickness of up to 550mm.

Discover BAE Systems CV90120 light tank offering firepower of tank with a weight of fewer than 40 tons

On January 13, 2023, Swedish company BAE Systems H?gglunds ?rnsk?ldsvik published a video showing the firepower and mobility of its CV90120 light tank. In the CV90 family, BAE Systems has developed a concept of a light tank version that is armed with a 120 mm high-pressure low-recoil smoothbore gun offering firepower and mobility of a Main Battle Tank (MBT) but with a combat weight of fewer than 40 tons.

Several armies in the world have now requested a new generation of a light tank that offers the firepower of a Main Battle Tank but with a weight between 30 and 35 tons, much lower than the weight of a conventional tank which varies between 60 and 70 tons.

The CV90120 has been developed by BAE Systems to meet a specific demand of modern armed forces to have the firepower comparable to an MBT (Main Battle Tank), in a lighter, more mobile vehicle. This type of combat vehicle is more easily transported by military transport aircraft than an MBT.

The CV90120?s capabilities also come at a much lower cost than traditional tanks. With half the weight of standard tanks, the CV90120?s fuel consumption and component wear is significantly lower.

Currently, India, the United States, and other countries have launched an acquisition program to have a light tank such as the MPF program of the U.S. Army. Recently, General Dynamics Land Systems announced that its Mobile Protected Firepower (MPF) offering has been chosen by the U.S. Army through a competitive process to provide enhanced firepower for Infantry Brigade Combat Teams (IBCTs).

The MPF is considered by the U.S. Army as a fire support armored vehicle but the design could be associated with a light tank. Indeed, the MPF is based on a tracked chassis with the driver at the front and a three-man turret armed with one 105mm gun.

The Philippines has selected the Israeli Sabrah Light Tank and the first copies of which were recently delivered to the Philippine army.

The BAE Systems CV90120 light tank offers the firepower and mobility of a conventional Main Battle Tank with a weight of fewer than 40 tons, compared to 60 - 70 tons for a tank.

With its lightweight design, the CV90120 is more maneuverable on the battlefield than traditional tanks, yet can still match them in terms of firepower. The tank gun is a powerful main weapon that allows the lightweight CV90120 to contend with any contemporary threat. Several 120 mm gun options exist.

The low ground pressure, rubber tracks and active damping enables the CV90120 to move to wherever it is needed and face any threat on the battlefield. The CV90120, at 26 to >40 tones has the same high operational tempo as the rest of the CV90 family.

The CV90120 also has a state-of-the-art ADAPTIV cloaking system, which works to keep the vehicle hidden from potential threats by altering its thermal signature. This, and the vehicle?s other defensive systems, ensures the CV90120?s crew survivability against modern-day battlefield threats.

The design of the CV90120 is conventional with the driver at the front left side of the hull with the power pack on its right and a two-man turret. The vehicle has a weight of fewer than 40 tons.

The CV90120 is armed with a 120 mm high-pressure low-recoil smoothbore gun able to fire all the standard NATO 120mm ammunition. The vehicle carries a total of 45 rounds.

In terms of protection, the all-welded steel hull of the CV 90120 is almost identical to the family of CV90 tracked armored vehicles family, but it can be fitted with additional armor according to mission requirements. Over the frontal arc, the CV 90120 hull and turret provide protection against 30 mm armor-piercing attacks while the other part of the vehicle provides protection against 12.7 mm armor-piercing attacks all around.

The CV90120 is powered by a turbocharged diesel engine developing 670 hp. It can run at a maximum road speed of 70 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 600 km.

https://www.ausa.org/publications/mobile-protected-firepower-opportunity

The MPF brings necessary firepower to the IBCT?s fight. The 105mm cannon, the coaxial 7.62mm machine gun and the externally mounted .50 caliber machine are the primary armaments for the MPF. The IBCT can only benefit from precision firepower that the fire control system is capable of bringing to the fight. The main gun will likely use legacy rounds that the MGS used: HEAT rounds for fighting vehicles, Sabot rounds for tanks, high-explosive plastic for obstacles, and cannister for massed infantry.

This sort of firepower can provide commanders with the ability to respond to various threats that would have taken a dismounted anti-tank team or a TOW HMMWV into the fight. The MPF has a unique ability to better react to contact than the other teams. Anti-tank teams and HMMWVs function well in the ambush, but they are drastically less likely to destroy the enemy when responding to an aggressive armored threat. Under pressure, it can be difficult for these teams to properly acquire a target. The Carl Gustav rockets or AT4s may not guarantee an immediate kill, meaning the vehicle could potentially engage friendly forces and reduce combat power. Javelins and TOWs have a higher probability of kill, but they still require the gunners or crew to remain vulnerable to direct and indirect fires. The MPF can fight better on the move, allowing these teams to function under significantly less duress to destroy armored threats.
