First Ares Armoured Vehicles Delivered to the Army

Named for the ancient Greek god of war, Ares delivers a step-change in the British Army's battlefield capability. Last week, the first six vehicles were delivered to the Household Cavalry Regiment at Bulford, Wiltshire.



Ares, and the other variants in the Ajax family of armoured vehicles, will replace the Army's Combat Vehicle Reconnaissance (Tracked) (CVR(T)) vehicles which have been the mainstay of armoured reconnaissance for almost fifty years.

CVR(T) has proved itself on the battlefield in the Falklands and the in the deserts of the Middle East, but now requires a replacement to maintain the Army's position as a top tier performer and to match the needs of the twenty-first century.

The Ajax family consists of Ares a troop-carrying reconnaissance vehicle, Ajax armed with a formidable 40mm cannon, support variants Apollo and Atlas, a command and control variant Athena, and an engineer variant – Argus.

Ares, part of the Ajax family of armoured vehicles, is being built by General Dynamics in Merthyr Tydfil, bringing hundreds of jobs and wider opportunities to Wales. The vehicles will give the Army's Armoured Infantry and Strike Brigades a critical advantage over any likely opponent, through a combination of the latest technology, exemplary levels of crew protection, and, of course, our world-class professional soldiers.

Colonel Justin Kingsford, the Ajax Programme Director said: 'This is an exciting moment for the Army. The delivery of ARES this week is an important step on our journey to give the Army an amazing state of the art, world beating Armoured Fighting Vehicle'

Describing the vehicle in greater depth, he went on to say:

'Ajax will allow us to manage battlespace information faster from a modern digitised platform, with increased lethality through the new 40mm cannon. Better mobility, alongside enhanced protection levels and increased reliability underline the transformational nature of the capability. A comprehensive simulated training suite supports this fleet and ensures we invest fully in our crews to get the very best of this capability.'

Modified Lynx IFV to be offered for US Army's OMFV competition

Raytheon and Rheinmetall are poised to modify their Lynx infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) and enter it as a candidate for the US Army's revamped M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle replacement effort.

The duo have kept their joint venture intact, Raytheon Rheinmetall Land Systems, and are in discussions with the service about the way ahead for the Optionally Manned Fighting Vehicle (OMFV) programme, representatives from both companies told Jane's during a 4 May interview.

"[Our proposal] is not going to be the Lynx in its current form, as everybody saw at [the Association of the US Army conference] two years ago," said Matthew Warnick, the American Rheinmetall Vehicles managing director.

Cv90120 is leuk voor erbij. Mortiercv90 zie ik heel veel in. Maar dat ding verslind munitie in een hoger tempo dan reguliere mortieren.

En dat adaptieve warmtesignatuur apparaat. Leuk voor spec ops.

US Army cancels current effort to replace Bradley vehicle

The U.S. Army is taking a step back on its effort to replace its Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicle after receiving only one bid in its competitive prototyping program, but this does not mean the end of the road for the future optionally manned fighting vehicle, service leaders told reporters Jan. 16 at the Pentagon.

Until now, the Army has been tight-lipped ever since it appeared the competitive effort was no longer competitive, as the service had received only one prototype submission.

"Today the U.S. Army will cancel the current solicitation for the Section 804 Middle Tier acquisition rapid prototyping phase of the [optionally manned fighting vehicle]. Based on feedback and proposals received from industry, we have determined it is necessary to revisit the requirements, acquisition strategy and schedule moving forward," said Bruce Jette, the Army's acquisition chief.

Bodemdruk doet er in dit geval niet toe. Beladen en bemand was het bergopwaarts en wat heuvels gewoon moeilijk. Maar niet te erg aangezien de oerlikon domineerde.

De IED's konden van dergelijke zware aard zijn dat ook een bodemplaat niet zou helpen. N.m.w werden wel stoelen en spall liner aangepast.
al met al hebben de ypers goed dienst gedaan daar.

Jazeker, die heb ik gezien, en de oerlikon deed het zeer goed, daarom vind ik de upgrade ook niet heel waardevol want qua vuurkracht is er geen vooruitgang, wellicht wel wat betere optiek en VLS en munitiesoorten.
Maar de mobiliteit was niet zo prima, heuvelop was het in bepaalde gevallen duwen en trekken, maar het was ook niet nodig om veel harder te moeten kunnen rijden. Het was dus een concessie met prima risico afweging.

Ter vergelijking: de hoge mobiliteit eisen stelden dat de Hagglund CV-90's en (geannuleerd)  SEP  pantserrups hun levensduur begonnen met minimaal een 25 pk / ton verhouding.  Zweden ging in 2010 op zoek naar een nieuw 8x8 pantserwiel en kwam op de volgende waarden:  Boxer: 21,8 pk/ton;  VBCI: 21,5 pk/ton; 
Finse AMV: 20,1 pk/ton;  Piranha IV: 21,8;  Piranha V: 19,3 pk/ton.  Terwijl de Piranha IIISE slechts op 15, 0 - 16,7 pk/ton uitkwam, wat hun DMO in-adequaat vond.
Men eiste dat de CV-90, net als de eerste M113 varianten een initiële bodem druk rond de 0,5 kg/cm2 zou bedragen.  De 22 tons voorserie had dan ook een bodemdruk van 0,5034 kg/cm2 en de 23,3 ton zware eerste productie Strf9040 versie woog 0,5331 kg/cm2.
Het ruim 4 ton zware ERA pakket vormde een extra belasting voor de gehele aandrijflijn.  De gewichtstoename maakte ook het aanbrengen van extra schokbrekers noodzakelijk.   De Amerikanen kregen in Vietnam te maken met een zeer grote landmijnen dreiging.  Voorzagen hun M113's en Sheridan lichte tanks dus toen met een 1" / 25,4 mm dikke pantserstalen bodemplaat.  Bij de Sheridan's liep deze bodemplaat door, tot en met het onderste deel van de front bepantsering.
Maar werden onze YPR's tijdens Uruzgan ook voorzien van een extra bodem pantser plaat ?   Ook enkele YPR's kregen daar een 'tulp' (vormig gat) in de romp bodem.
In Vietnam was er al kritiek te horen over het feit dat de M113 en Sheridan hull van aluminium waren.  In ieder geval van 1 Uruzgan-ganger heb ik vernomen, dat ook daar die aluminium romp geen succes was in verband met de impact van explosies.

In Australia heeft men de M113's van een nieuwe en sterkere MTU diesel + versnellingsbak voorzien en de romp verlengd.  Met dit voertuig kan men bijvoorbeeld in tropen, zelfs tijdens het  moesson regen seizoen (bijna) overal komen.   Dus een terreinvaardigheid die superieur is aan pantserwielen.   Nog steeds een redelijk voertuig in laag-intensieve conflicten, waar je aan een .50 een adequate boord bewapening hebt.  Voor de rest van de conflicten: hoofdzakelijk CV-90 rups, met 8x8 pantserwiel Boxer in de ondersteuning

Misschien is/was de M113 geen top voertuig maar in grote aantallen is het wel een voertuig nut heeft.

Voordeel is dat dat het ook een relatief simpel voertuig om te bouwen is waardoor het in grote aantallen beschikbaar komt. Met de moderne middelen en systemen kan het misschien iets zijn in geval van grootschalig conflict.

Het zou wel een relatief goedkope UGV kunnen zijn. Veel ruimte voor uithoudingsvermogen en munitie.

Dat klopt, maar het is 2020 en als we het over een modernisatie programma hebben van een IFGV dat weer relevant moet worden is dit geen gouden ei, niet bepaald. Overduidelijk een zaak van roeien met de riemen de we*ze hebben.
