How the Ukraine Counteroffensive Can Still Succeed

The situation in Ukraine still favors Kyiv despite the limited progress made in the counteroffensive so far. Ukrainian forces attempted a limited mechanized penetration of prepared Russian defenses in the south in early to mid-June, but failed to break through the Russian lines. They then switched to slower and more careful operations while disrupting Russian rear areas with long-range precision strikes. Ukraine began the next, reportedly main, phase of its counteroffensive on July 26 with a determined drive to penetrate Russian lines in western Zaporizhia Oblast. It's far too soon to evaluate the outcome of that effort, which is underway as of the time of this writing, but it is vital to manage expectations. Ukrainian forces are fighting now to break through the first line of long-prepared Russian defenses. Several lines lie behind it, stretching for many miles. Ukrainian progress will very likely alternate periods of notable tactical advances with periods, possibly long periods, of pause and some setbacks. Much as we might hope that the road to the Sea of Azov will simply open for Ukrainian forces the odds are high that fighting will remain hard, casualties high, and frustration will be a constant companion. All of which is normal in war.

F-16 questions remain as Ukrainian pilots set to start training this month

The US is still waiting for European officials to submit a final plan for training Ukrainian pilots on F-16 fighter jets, which the US will have to authorize before the program can actually begin, officials familiar with the matter told CNN.

The training is supposed to start this month, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European officials have said publicly. But two months after President Joe Biden announced US support for training Ukrainian pilots on F-16s, there remain a number of critical details to work out.

The US still needs to approve the transfer of F-16-specific equipment and materials, including flight simulators and training manuals. But officials told CNN that the Biden administration has not yet received a final training plan from the Europeans, meaning there is nothing for the US to sign off on yet.

It is also still unclear which countries will commit F-16s to the training program – and to Ukraine itself once the program is finished. Transferring the planes to Ukraine will require separate US approval.

US defense officials told CNN that the US is still deciding whether to send American pilots to help train the Ukrainians, but that no decisions will be made until a final training plan is authorized.

A spokesperson for Denmark's Ministry of Defense would not comment directly on whether the country had submitted a formal plan to the US for approval. But the spokesperson provided a one-page training concept to CNN that said the course will aim to train pilots and ground crew over a span of six months, taking place at a number of locations including Skrydstrup Fighter Base in Denmark.

The training concept also said the coalition had agreed to support the training with "language experts, pilots, ground crew, instructors, aircraft or funding as appropriate. Ukraine is expected to provide qualified personnel able to pass necessary language, health, and security tests."

A spokesperson for the Dutch Ministry of Defense said they had no updates. Dutch Defense Minister Kajsa Ollongren told CNN last month that the training was set to begin in Denmark in August, and then be continued "in a sustainable way" at a training hub in Romania. The training program will be for Ukraine and "also for other countries who are transitioning to the fourth generation fighter jets," she said.

A faster training timeline
The training program is being supported by a coalition of 11 NATO countries and requires official US approval because the F-16 is an American technology.

The course itself is expected to be conducted in Denmark and Romania, with help from the Netherlands, Belgium, Canada, Luxembourg, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Sweden and the UK, officials have said. But the details, including the dates, locations, and length of the syllabus "are still being worked out," National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby said during a briefing last week.

Ukrainians have been pleading with Western allies to supply them with F-16 jets to be able to fend off Russian attack aircraft and better protect their skies

Ukrainians have come to the US for military training in the past, specifically on Patriot air defense systems at Fort Sill in Oklahoma. But US officials have emphasized that all the training on F-16s will take place in Europe.

Even so, the final syllabus for the course will probably be similar to one created by the US Air Force earlier this year, officials said. The Air Force devised a hypothetical training plan after observing the skills of two Ukrainian pilots flying F-16 simulators at Morris Air National Guard Base in Tucson, Arizona.

An internal Air Force memo detailing the assessment, first obtained by Yahoo and verified to CNN by an Air Force official, said the Ukrainians' skillset suggested that training could be completed in four to five months.

The timeline is faster than the standard F-16 training program for US Air Force pilots, but it strips out missions and tasks unnecessary for Ukrainian pilots facing off against the Russian military, doing away with things like air-to-air refueling and instrument landing procedures.

The number of Ukrainian pilots set to be trained is also still being determined, but the Air Force memo recommended a pool of 10-12 participants. That is in line with the number of pilots US defense officials believe Ukraine will be able to realistically sacrifice for a months-long training course in Europe as the war rages on.

The Ukrainians will also have to clear another key hurdle before they can train on the F-16s: English-language proficiency. The Air Force memo described the pilots' English-language aptitude as a "concern" and said "additional language training will be required for the majority of the initial cadre" of pilots. The UK has offered to provide that instruction as part of the course, officials said, and the US is considering providing English teachers to the program as well.

'The US will not be the holdup'
Ukraine has been pleading for the advanced western jets for more than a year, arguing that they will provide the military with additional air defense and offensive capabilities.

Though F-16s began flying at about the same time as the Mig-29s and Su-27s in Ukraine's Air Force, the American fighter has been continuously upgraded with more advanced digital electronics and avionics, making it a more capable multi-role aircraft than Kyiv's Soviet-era fighter fleet.

The fourth-generation F-16 can perform air-to-air missions, defending Ukraine's airspace against Russian aircraft, and air-to-ground missions, attacking Russian forces on the battlefield. The F-16 has also been exported to many countries around the world, including in Europe, providing Ukraine with a potential supply of weaponry and spare parts once they acquire the jet.

US officials have emphasized that they won't be an impediment to the F1-6 training, and National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told CNN last month that the US will provide the necessary support for the program "as soon as the Europeans are prepared."

"The president has given a green light, and we will allow, permit, support, facilitate, and, in fact, provide the necessary tools for Ukrainians to begin being trained on F-16s as soon as the Europeans are prepared," he said. "The United States will not be the holdup in ensuring that this F-16 training can get under way."

The target of this aggressive operation was two vessels from the Russian Black Sea Fleet's Project 22160 patrol ships Sergey Kotov and Vasily Bykov.

The strike involved three naval drones from the Ukrainian army, known as the Magura V5 USV, targeting the aforementioned vessels. Unsubstantiated rumors have begun to circulate suggesting that one of the attacked ships might be a container vessel carrying arms from Syria.

Following the attack, Russian sailors have reportedly requested evacuation, indicating that the patrol ships might have sustained significant damage. Reports suggest that there have been five injuries and one casualty, although no official confirmation has been given on these figures, nor on the status of the ships.

The Magura V5 USV utilized in this operation is primarily a surveillance and reconnaissance unit with additional capabilities such as mine warfare. This autonomous unmanned vehicle minimizes personnel risk and reduces operational costs.

The Magura V5's specifications include a length of 5500 mm, a width of 1500 mm, and a height of 500 mm above the waterline. Despite its compact size, the V5 can reach speeds of up to 22 knots cruising and 42 knots maximum, with a range of 450 nautical miles.

Moreover, the V5 has a load capacity of 320 kg, allowing for various payloads. Connectivity options for the unit include a mesh radio with an air-based repeater or satellite communications (SatCom), ensuring reliable communication during operations.

About the Project 22160 patrol ships

Designed for long-range operations, the Project 22160 ships can operate effectively in various maritime zones, including economic exclusive zones, ensuring the security of national territorial waters. Their primary functions include patrolling, search and rescue operations, anti-piracy and anti-smuggling missions, as well as environmental monitoring.

Physically, these ships feature a displacement of 1,300 tons, length of 94 meters, width of 14 meters, and a draft of 3.4 meters. The propulsion system consists of two cruising diesel engines, providing a combined power output of 34,000 horsepower.

Project 22160 patrol ships can achieve a cruising speed of 30 knots and have an operational range of 6,000 miles at 16 knots. They can operate autonomously for 60 days and accommodate a crew of up to 80 personnel.

even een kleine update over de stand van zaken bij Robotyne

Frontline report: Ukraine successfully implemented a tactic that helped penetrate Russian defense by 5 km in Robotyne in the south

Ukraine, using a well-considered tactic, penetrated Russian occupiers by 5 km and developed a significant bridgehead between Robotyne and Verbove, Zaporizhzhia Oblast.

Ukraine advanced 5 km between Robotyne and Verbove, Zaporizhzhia Oblast

Day 523. 31 July 2023

More information became available about the Ukrainian strike on the Chonhar bridge, on 29 July, which connects Crimea to the Kherson Oblast.

Russian sources circulated footage of the intact Chonhar bridge to back up the claims of the Russian Ministry of Defense that all missiles were shot down.

Unfortunately for Russians, today Planet Labs released satellite footage that clearly shows that Ukrainians successfully destroyed a section of the railroad bridge.

Screenshot from the video
It turned out that the circulated footage showed the intact section of the bridge, while the huge hole was located right to the left.

Even though the Russian military and media tried to restrict access to the area, today, someone finally took a picture of one of the holes in the bridge. The collapsed section hasn't still been shown, which indicates that Russians likely tried to show the section with the smallest damage to minimize the backlash.

As mentioned last time, such developments undermine Russian logistics significantly.

It is true that Russians can supply the Zaporizhzhia Group from the east. However, Russian forces simply cannot rely solely on this supply line.

Screenshot from the video
Firstly, most ammunition depots and warehouses with equipment are within HIMARS range, and after Ukrainian got Strom Shadow missiles, even Mariupol and Berdiansk became unsafe.

Secondly, given the risk of strikes, the supply leverage is extreme, as Russians need to travel half a thousand km to supply the Kherson Group.

Screenshot from the video
That is why, thirdly, over the last eight months, Russians have moved all of their warehouses, ammunition depots, and reparation centers to Crimea, assuming that this is a safe haven.

And that is why by destroying Russian bases and logistics in Crimes, Ukrainians are creating substantial problems for the Russian Zaporizhzhia Group.

In fact, over the last week, Ukrainians exploited Russian problems with logistics and penetrated Russian defense by 5 km in the area of Robotyne in the southern frontline.

Screenshot from the video
At first, Ukrainians started attacking Russian positions in the tree lines west of the settlement, and Russian analysts concluded that the main goal of Ukrainians was to split Russian forces into two groups and enter Robotyne itself.

However, it turned out that Ukrainians were just improving their tactical position, and the main attack happened east of Robotyne. Ukrainians chose to advance in the lowlands.

There are three reasons for the choice of this attack vector. First, Russian forces expected Ukrainians to continue moving along the ridge, which is why this direction was heavily reinforced.

Secondly, Russian forces did not fortify this area as much, so their defense here was quite weak.

And thirdly, Ukrainians could assume a very convenient position in the forest that would allow hiding troops and equipment right in front of Robotyne and also control the eastern side of Robotyne from the part of the forest that is located on the hill.

Screenshot from the video
In order to make this work, Ukrainians once again played along with the Russian expectations and launched a series of assaults from the north and west, but only with the aim of fixing Russian forces.

Once they successfully drew the attention away from the main direction, they penetrated Russian defenses from the east. Due to the rigidity of the Russian army, Ukrainians successfully used this tactic multiple times.

Russians released geolocated footage, confirming that Ukrainians established control over the Russian trenches east of Robotyne.

Next, Ukrainian forces started attacking Robotyne from the east while simultaneously getting deeper, and widening the bridgehead. Geolocated footage confirmed that Ukrainians gained a lot of ground in front of Verbove as well.

Screenshot from the video
The footage shows how Ukrainians were already testing the Russian anti-tank ditch by sending an empty armored fighting vehicle into it. The driver was seen jumping out of it in advance.

The latest updates suggest that Ukrainians are already operating in the vicinity of Novoprokopivka. In total, Ukrainians managed to advance by 5 km in all directions and develop a significant bridgehead between Robotyne and Verbove.

For now, the intensity of clashes has temporarily decreased due to the rain. However, if Ukrainians make one more such push and enter Novoprokopivka and Verbove, Russian flanks will collapse.
