Singapore Discloses Further Details of Invincible-Class Submarines

Singapore's Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) has disclosed further details of its new Type 218SG air-independent propulsion (AIP)-equipped submarines, which have been customised specifically for operations in shallow and congested waters.

The details were revealed in conjunction with the launch ceremony of the first-of-class, which will be known as RSS Invincible once commissioned, on 18 February. Invincible is one of four Type 218SG boats acquired under two separate contracts signed between ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) and the Singapore government in 2013 and 2017.

According to information released by MINDEF, the vessel will have maximum speeds in excess of 15 kt when submerged and 10 kt when dived. The submarine will also displace 2,200 tonnes when submerged and 2,000 tonnes when surfaced. Each boat is armed with eight tubes.

Although not disclosed, these tubes will likely deploy 533 mm torpedoes and other munitions via water-ram discharge devices such as those found on the German Navy's Type 212A boats, which have been used as a reference for the Type 218SGs.

The vessel will also be able to stay submerged about 50% longer than the Archer (Västergötland) and Challenger (Sjöormen) classes of boat that it will eventually replace, and can "carry a wider range of mission payloads", said MINDEF.

Given that the Archer and Challenger classes have submerged endurances of between 14 and 21 days respectively, this puts the Independence class's endurance at about 28-42 days without snorkelling.

In addition, the submarines will be equipped with sense-making and "accelerated decision-making support systems", which include data analytics and decision support engines that have been developed in-country by Singapore's Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA).

Singapore Navy's First Invincible-Class Submarine Launched

Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen officiated at the launch ceremony of the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN)'s first Invincible-class submarine, Invincible, at the thyssenkrupp Marine Systems Shipyard in Kiel, Germany, on 18 Feb 2019. The submarine was launched by Mrs Ng, wife of Dr Ng. Chief of German Navy Vice-Admiral Andreas Krause, Republic of Singapore Navy's Chief of Navy Rear-Admiral Lew Chuen Hong and senior defence officials from both countries attended the launch ceremony.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Ng highlighted that, "The RSN plays a key role in keeping [the] Sea Lines of Communications (SLOCs) open, not only for Singapore, but indeed, for the world. And the maritime environment around Singapore also faces security challenges... In this context, the acquisition of the new Type 218SG submarines is timely." He added that that the new submarines were designed based on experience and expertise garnered through more than two decades of operating submarines, and the launch of the Invincible marked a significant milestone in the RSN's submarine capability.

Invincible is the first of four customised submarines designed for operations in Singapore's shallow and busy tropical waters. Custom-built to Singapore's needs, the new submarines will possess longer endurance and higher payloads. Following the launch, Invincible will undergo a series of sea trials before delivery to Singapore in 2021. The remaining three submarines are under construction. Dr Ng also announced the names of the remaining three submarines – Impeccable, Illustrious, and Inimitable.

The launch of Invincible is testament to the warm and growing defence ties between Singapore and Germany. Bilateral defence relations have strengthened with the signing of the enhanced Defence Cooperation Agreement (eDCA) in 2018. The eDCA paves the way forward for cooperation in areas of mutual interest, such as in submarine training, defence technology and cyber defence. Both countries also cooperate and interact widely through high-level visits and dialogues, military exchanges, cross-attendance of professional courses and technology collaboration.

Dr Ng was in Germany to attend the Munich Security Conference from 15 to 17 Feb 2019, where he spoke at the conference and had bilateral meetings with his foreign counterparts.

US Navy looks to bring back Harpoons

Although decommissioned for more than a decade, the US Navy is looking to bring back its remaining Harpoon anti-ship missiles to serve as gap bridges until the arrival of Maritime Strike Tomahawk missile capabilities.

The philosophy was outlined by RADM Daryl Caudle, commander of submarine forces, US Pacific Fleet ...

Fleet of new submarines armed with $6bn worth of weapons

The Defence Department is poised to spend up to $6 billion arming Australia's new fleet of submarines with an arsenal of next-generation weapons likely to include underwater drones and anti-aircraft missiles. Defence confirmed it had allocated between $5bn and $6bn on weapons for the 12 new subs, due to come into service in the 2030s.

The $5bn-$6bn price tag comes on top of the $50bn cost of the submarines and will cover arming the subs over the course of their operational life, which is expected to extend well into the century. Defence has said it would build a new submarine every two years, meaning the last new sub will enter service in the 2050s. With each sub having an operational lifespan of about 30 years, the navy is likely to be operating them well into the 2080s. The Defence Department confirmed to a Senate estimates hearing that the money would fund "the full scope of weapons and deployable systems'' for the subs. "This includes torpedoes and missiles, as well as emerging systems and technologies," it said.

Australian Strategic Policy Institute senior analyst Marcus Hellyer said emerging technologies made it very difficult to say what the final price for the subs would be. Mr Hellyer said weapons on the new subs could include unmanned submersibles, anti-aircraft missiles and "smart'' mines. "The really interesting growth area is autonomous underwater vehicles,'' he said.

"That's certainly something that will increasingly shape undersea warfare.
"I'd be very surprised if Defence wasn't looking at acquiring underwater vessels that can be deployed from a submarine.''

Mr Hellyer said future subs would deploy relatively cheap, disposable drones as a network of sensors to detect enemy vessels. He said as the technology developed, the subs would act as motherships deploying cheaper, unmanned submersibles that would perform surveillance roles, a mode of warfare called "human-machine teaming''. Modern submarines also had the ability to shoot down sub-hunting helicopters using vertical missile tubes, a capability the navy was likely to be exploring. French company Naval Group will build a version of its nuclear-powered Shortfin Barracuda class submarine. The Australian variant will be conventionally powered.

Zowel NLD als het Australische programma zijn erg interessant voor Canada. Denk dat ze nog tien jaar wachten, en dan eens rond gaan kijken naar hoe&wat, doen ze dan ook weer tien jaar over natuurlijk.

Canadian Navy Decides to Start Upgrades to Extend Life of Aging Submarine Fleet    (..  :hrmph:  laat Canada maar eens praten met NL over vervanging van hun onderzeeboten ! )

Her Majesty's Canadian Ship (HMCS) Victoria is the lead ship of Canada's four-boat submarine squadron, whose service life will now be extended to keep them in service well into the 2030s

The Department of National Defence is pushing ahead with plans to extend the lives of Canada's submarine fleet, with the head of the navy hoping some work will start in the coming months.

The movement comes as countries around the world have stepped up investments in their submarine and anti-submarine fleets to protect their waters — and operate in waters not under their control.

Canada's four Victoria-class submarines have a troubled history since they were bought second-hand from Britain in 1998, with successive governments investing hundreds of millions of dollars in constant repairs and upgrades.

But in an interview with The Canadian Press, Royal Canadian Navy commander Vice-Admiral Ron Lloyd said the diesel-powered submarines — HMCS Chicoutimi, Victoria, Corner Brook and Windsor — have finally turned a corner.

Lloyd specifically pointed to HMCS Chicoutimi's having recently spent 197 days in the Pacific and Asia even as HMCS Windsor was patrolling the Mediterranean with NATO as proof the submarines are living up to their potential.

"The fact we had two boats concurrently deployed, if that doesn't speak to the success of the program, I don't know what does," said Lloyd, who will retire from the military later this year after three years as navy commander.

The clock has been ticking on the four vessels: without upgrades, the first of the submarines will reach the end of its life in 2022, according to documents obtained through access to information, while the last will retire in 2027.
