Damaged HMS Daring returns to Portsmouth

Inquiry underway to investigate cause of accident

THE damage caused to one of the navy's top warships after a crash with a tug boat was clear to see as she returned to Portsmouth.
HMS Daring returned to Portsmouth Naval Base on Thursday afternoon after a prang in Southampton Water left her with a 30ft long dent to her starboard side.

The damage – clearly visible from the Round Tower in Old Portsmouth – was being assessed by BAE Systems workers at the base.

They will report back to the Royal Navy on how long Daring will be out of action and how much the repairs will cost.

A BAE source told The News it shouldn't take them long to get the warship back in service.

Investigations have been launched by the MoD, Royal Navy and Maritime and Coastguard Agency after the destroyer collided with civilian tug boat Svitzer Sussex on its way into Marchwood on Tuesday at 5.50pm.

The tug boat was assisting in a routine berthing operation when it collided with HMS Daring, the MoD confirmed.

It is thought the civilian ship suffered a machinery breakdown and was unable to avoid crashing into Daring's starboard side.

The accident happened just five weeks after the Royal Navy announced Daring – the first of the new Type 45 class of air defence destroyer – had officially began operational service.

Daring arrived back in to Portsmouth Harbour at 1pm on Thursday.

People went to the Round Tower in Old Portsmouth to see the extent of the damage suffered by the ship.

A woman, who wished to remain anonymous because her son serves in Daring, said: 'The damage is much more than I expected. It's such a shame that it happened. They were off to America soon, so its spoilt their plans a little bit.'

Her husband added: 'It's scraped across four or five plates of the ship which isn't good.'

Ship spotter James Morgan, 31, of Crofton Road, Milton, said: 'It's quite a bit of damage – far more than I was expecting actually.'

The navy said results of its investigation won't be known for several days.

An inquiry is under way after the Royal Navy ship HMS Daring, said to be the most advanced warship in the world, was damaged in a collision.

The Portsmouth-based destroyer was being towed into Marchwood, on Southampton Water, when it collided with a tug on Tuesday evening.

An assessment of the ship, which was only commissioned into the Navy last year, is taking place.

The vessel was only declared ready for action earlier this month.

Since arriving at its home base last year, the ship has had months of intensive sea trials.
