Het eerste nieuwe fregat uit de PPA klasse van de Italiaanse marine, het schip (F599) krijgt de naam ''Paolo Thaon di Revel'' een admiraal uit de Italiaans-Turkse oorlog (1911-1912) en 1e wereldoorlog. Als alles volgens planning verloopt word het fregat op 15 Juni te water gelaten.

Greece Sends LOI To France For Belharra Frigates, Looking For Financing

A Letter of Intent (LOI) was reportedly sent yesterday by the Greek defense procurement agency to the French government, in connection with the procurement of two Belharra frigates from Naval Group for the Hellenic Navy.

This information was first published by Greek defense magazine Doureios Ippos (the Trojan Horse).

Contacted by Naval News, a Naval Group spokesperson declined to comment on the information.

It has been a known fact since about 2008, that the Hellenic Navy is looking to procure new surface combatant, primarily for Anti Air Warfare (AAW) missions.

Greece has been facing head winds with this plan ever since, due to the financial constraints. While France was hopping Greece could use some of the European bond money for the financing of the frigates, this is no longer possible according to Naval News' sources in Greece: This money is set to be used to pay back IMF loans in advance (allowing the Hellenic government to save on interest rate).

In order to find a solution to this deadlock , according to Doureios, France asked the Greek government for a kind of "proof in writing" that there is truly an interest to procure Belharra frigates. Hence the LOI from the procurement agency. This LOI will now serve as a firm interest for the French side to look for financing from financial institutions for the procurement of the two frigates.

Slowly coming out of the economic crisis, Greek government's defence procurement is more than ever tied to the need for investments, to rejuvenate the industrial capabilities and create new jobs. At the same time the country is in a volatile region and the new era in Greek – US relations comes to address the political, security and economic aspects of that situation. The recent acquisitions of Neorion Shipyards and Elefsis Shipyards by Onex Corporation, is a clear sign of the relations between the two countries. At the same time Hellenic Shipyards (Skaramangas) are still under restructuring. In this environment Naval Group or any other competitor would have to present a proposal that would potentially provide technology transfer and the opportunity to create jobs locally, backed with political support and a solid financial plan. A difficult task indeed.

According to Naval Group, Belharra is the answer from to navies looking for a compact frigate to perform a large range of missions, stand-alone or within a task force, for high sea duration missions or for shallow water operation in congested and contested operational environment. This new frigate features high level capabilities in anti-air, anti-surface, anti-submarine, and asymmetric warfare domains as well as the access to deep strike capability.

In April 2017, the French Defence Ministry awarded a contract to Naval Group for the construction of five Belharra frigates for the French Navy. Known as FDI (for Defense and Intervention Frigate) the first of class surface combatant is to be delivered in 2023 while first steel cutting will take place at the end of the year at Naval Group's shipyard in Lorient.

HSL, TAIS to jointly build five Indian Navy fleet support ships

India's state-owned Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) is poised to sign a deal with TAIS, a consortium of five Turkish shipyards, to jointly design and build five 45,000-tonne fleet support ships for the Indian Navy (IN) for an estimated total of INR160 billion (USD2.31 billion).

HSL chairman Rear Admiral L V Sarat Babu (retd) told The Hindu newspaper in late May that his company had concluded negotiations with TAIS on 28 May to design and construct the fleet support ships. He said HSL is expected to sign the collaboration contract for the ships by late June.

Babu said that steel cutting for the ships, all of which would be built at HSL's yard in Visakhapatnam, would begin by the end of 2020, with the first platform expected to be delivered to the IN by 2024.

U.S. Indo-Pacific Command Tests Quickstrike-ER Naval Mine from B-52 Bomber

"This aerial maritime mine is compatible, interoperable, and can be employed by virtually any JDAM enabled aircraft, including foreign partners," said Ka'iliwai. "These capabilities will serve as a significant deterrent in peacetime and an effective operational and strategic tool in wartime."

A B-52 bomber from the 49th Test Squadron out of Barksdale, La. carried out the exercise and released four inert QS64-ER 2000lb mine shapes on a remote shallow water location of the PMRF.

Dit onderwerp krijgt momenteel alle aandacht bij Damen en aangezien er voor het zomer reces geen noemenswaardig nieuws valt te verwachten op het vWalrus- en vMFF dossier richt men nu alle ballen op damage control en reputatie.

Ik weet niet wat de oorzaak van de vertraging is, wel begrijp ik dat men in de afrondingsfase zit m.b.t. het CSS. M.b.t. vMFF: geen beweging.

Ik vind het allemaal maar raar en naar. Het lijkt er een beetje op dat een stel moraal ridders in Den Haag de eigen industrie graag om zeep helpt. Ik zou zeggen kiel CSS maar ook kiel van 4 nieuwe M vervangers van het Omega ontwerp ASAP leggen. En dan heb ik het over 4 voor de KM. Dit heeft verdorie lang genoeg geduurd. Ongeloofelijk we hebben straks de oudste gevechtsvloot van EU😣

En daarbij dat een en ander aangepast moest worden, maar niet specifiek wat en hoe en waarom.
