Lieutenant Colonel Karlheinz Boehnke, Multi-Role Armoured Vehicle (MRAV) Boxer representative in the German Army Concept and Capabilities Development Centre, presented a Boxer jamming variant and an update on other planned versions on the second day of SAE Media Group's Future Armoured Vehicles Survivability (FAVS) 2023 conference held in London from 13 to 15 November.

The Boxer Knifefish jamming variant would exist in two versions – ultra-high frequency (UHF)/very high frequency (VHF) and high frequency (HF). The systems requirement document and proposed solution are planned for November, to be followed by a draft development proposal in March 2024, and parliamentary approval a month later. Lt Col Boehnke expected at least one Boxer jamming prototype to be delivered by 2028.

He said Germany and the Netherlands would form a medium brigade, with Germany providing Boxer heavy weapon carriers (HWCs) and armoured infantry fighting vehicles (AIFVs) to that formation, in addition to two German brigades and the Franco-German Brigade.

Lt Col Boehnke also expected plans for a Boxer recovery vehicle launched in 2022 to be approved by the end of 2024. Flensburger Fahrzeugbau Gesellschaft (FFG) has been working on its proposed Boxer repair and recovery vehicle (RRV) variant, which was first presented in 2019.

Another planned Boxer variant Lt Col Boehnke presented was a mine clearing version, with the systems requirement document and proposed solution planned for November. Regarding the Boxer bridge laying variant, proposals for which have been presented by Krauss Maffei-Wegmann and Rheinmetall, Lt Col Boehnke expected a functional requirements document in January 2024. He raised the possibility of the bridge layer being based on a wheeled vehicle other than Boxer.

Bundeswehr medium brigades take shape



Lieutenant Colonel Karlheinz Boehnke, Multi-Role Armoured Vehicle (MRAV) Boxer representative in the German Army Concept and Capabilities Development Centre, gave an update on the Bundeswehr's plans to form medium brigades on the second day of SAE Media Group's Future Armoured Vehicles Survivability (FAVS) 2023 conference held in London from 13 to 15 November.

He said the Bundeswehr would have four medium brigades, including the Franco-German Brigade and one formed with the Netherlands. The German formations will be the 21st and 41st medium brigades and along with the Franco-German Brigade will be formed by five heavy weapon carrier (HWC) and two armoured infantry fighting vehicle (AIFV) battalions, with support units including headquarters and services companies, signals companies, artillery battalions, engineer battalions, and combat service support battalions. In addition, the two German medium brigades will each have a reconnaissance company.

The brigades will be at 72-hour readiness and be equipped with Boxer AIFVs, HWCs, and Remote Controlled Howitzer (RCH) 155s, in addition to a next-generation armoured transport vehicle, possibly the 6×6 Common Armoured Vehicle System (CAVS), according to Lt Col Boehnke.

Die mogelijkheden zijn er natuurlijk wel, het simpelste voorbeeld is de EOS R400. Hoewel dit geen koepel is maar een remote weapon station is het wel de simpelste oplossing met een 30 x 113 mm (apache) kanon + 2 ATGM's. Dit hebben we ook gezien op de Boxer bij schiet proeven maar ook op de Vector.

Elbit Systems Debuts Crossbow Next Generation Turreted Mortar System at DSEI LONDON  2023.

The automatic mortar system was developed by Elbit Systems' Land under an Israel Defense Force contract and is MIL-STD-810G compliant.

The Crossbow system has a capability of shooting the first round in less than 30 seconds, has a maximum rate of ten rounds per minute with a sustained rate of fire of six rounds per minute, with a short sensor-to-shooter circle. It can fire a variety of munitions including the Iron Sting guided mortar munition providing effective range of up to 10 kilometers. No indexing loading is required for the Crossbow turret and it has the capability of 360 degree infinite pivot.

Designed for UT-120m turrets, it can be integrated onto 6X6, 8X8 wheeled platforms and tracked vehicles as well as stationary platforms. This makes Crossbow fully compatible with existing NATO ammunition requirements. The Crossbow is fitted with a computerized fire control system, a land navigation system and can be operated in a GPS denied environment.

British Army BOXER displayed at ARMY EXPO 2023

A UK specification BOXER 8×8 Mechanised Infantry Vehicle was also on display, albeit inside a marquee with 'dramatic' lighting and assorted clutter preventing full walk-round photos being taken. However as this was our first opportunity to see a British Army version (at previous military expos it has usually been a Dutch or German spec vehicle or a pre-production prototype on show) I endeavoured to get the best shots possible. I was also given the opportunity to photograph the interior, under supervision and from one angle only, and offered the chance to go inside, but on security grounds full internal photography was understandably not possible. This is the Specialist Carrier variant, configured as a REME fitters' vehicle with demountable stowage racks and seating for three personnel in addition to the crew.
