Sea Lion passes milestones on road to deliveries to German Navy

The Sea Lion variant of the NHIndustries NH90 helicopter has passed two important milestones towards first delivery to the German Navy at the end of 2019, Airbus announced on 21 November.

Seen on its maiden flight in December 2016, the Sea Lion is being procured by the German Navy as a replacement for its ageing Sea King helicopter. Deliveries are to run from 2019 to 2022. (Airbus)

The German Navy version of the NH90 NATO Frigate Helicopter (NFH) recently completed its service qualification trials, as well as the first electrical power-on of the first production-standard aircraft.

As noted by Airbus, with all ground and flight tests for the qualification of the Sea Lion having been concluded in early November, the formal closure of the qualification phase is expected in the first quarter of 2019. This will be followed by the military type certification by the German authorities in the second quarter of 2019 ahead of delivery to the navy in the fourth quarter of the year. The qualification aircraft, the second Sea Lion prototype, is now entering the lay-up phase for upgrading the helicopter to serial configuration and preparing it for delivery to the Bundeswehr, Airbus said.

Separately, on 24 October the first production-standard Sea Lion helicopter successfully completed the first power-on of all electrical systems in the final assembly line at Airbus Helicopters' production facility in Donauwörth, southern Germany.

Launched at the ILA Airshow in Berlin in May 2014, the Sea Lion is largely similar in scope to the baseline NFH-variant helicopter but features some German-specific equipment such as radios and other communications systems. The Sea Lions are intended to provide continued anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface vessel warfare (ASuW), maritime surveillance, search and rescue (SAR), vertical replenishment, and transport capabilities for the German Navy's F124 Sachsen-class frigates, the planned F125 Baden-Württemberg-class frigates, and the Berlin-class (Type 702) combat support vessels.

India fast-tracks purchase of MH-60R helicopters

India's Ministry of Defence (MoD) has issued a letter of request (LOR) to the US government on 15 November regarding the intended purchase of 24 Sikorsky MH-60R Seahawk multirole naval helicopters for the Indian Navy (IN).

IN officials told Jane's that the long-delayed request to acquire the platforms for an estimated INR135 billion (USD1.88 billion) – under the US Foreign Military Sales programme – is likely to be signed within a year.

The IN anticipates the delivery of the MH-60Rs, which are intended to replace the service's fleet of Sea King Mk 42B/C and Ka-28 helicopters, to begin around 2020 and be completed 48 months later.

PHL's First Anti-Submarine Warfare Helicopter Conducts Test Flight



According to information received by MaxDefense Philippines, the Philippine Navy's first of two ordered AW159 "Wildcat" anti-submarine warfare (ASW) helicopters conducted its first test flight on November at AgustaWestland's facility in Yeovil, UK.

MaxDefense said it received information that the first AgustaWestland AW159 Wildcat naval helicopter bound for the Philippine Navy conducted it's first test flight last 01 November 2018 at AgustaWestland's facility in Yeovil, UK.

It added that the ASW helicopter is "wearing the UK military aircraft registration number ZZ549."

The contract for the two ASW helicopters was signed March 2016 under Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Modernization Program First Horizon. The contract is worth PHP5.4 billion and includes munition, mission essential equipment, and integrated logistic support.

Delivery is expected in March 2019.

Misschien word het tijd om een topic te openen betreffende "nut of noodzaak dedicated CAS toestellen"?

Voor grondeenheden is de grootste pré van een CAS toestel juist het gebrek aan capabilities. 5th gen platformen met AESA radars zijn wellicht geschikt voor CAS maar waarschijnlijk slechts zeer bepert beschikbaar. Te druk met OCA, DCA, AI, SEAD enz.

WO 3 komt er. Is het niet deze eeuw dan de volgende. Het is maar net de vraag hoelang we kunnen pappen en nathouden en hoeveel relativerend vermogen er bij diplomaten aanwezig zal zijn bij oplopende spanningen.

Wees daar niet zo zeker van... Zo zie ik het in de Zuid Chinese zee nog een keer grondig misgaan, iets wat maar zo kan ontaarden in onbeheersbaar conflict. Daarnaast, onderschat de groeiende spanning in de Noordpool regio niet.

Omdat A-10's uit de lucht geschoten worden, allemaal indien WO3.

Die WO3 gaat er toch niet meer komen zolang jij nog leeft Huzaar. Ik denk dat we te maken
zullen krijgen met veel van dat soort oorlogen in Mali, Syrie, Irak en Somalie , Afghanistan allemaal tegenstanders
met bijna geen AA behalve wat vanaf de schouder afgevuurde IGLA's en dan zijn die A-10's veel handiger en goedkoper
dan die dure F-35's.

Als we het Syrische regeringsleger gaan aanvallen ......? ja dan pas als hun S-300's zijn uitgeschakeld dan is er genoeg
ruimte voor een A-10...maar goed daar heb je dan weer die F-35 voor aangeschaft.

Maar in 90% van de conflicten hebben wij meer aan een A-10 !!!!!!!!!!
