US Navy ditches futuristic railgun, eyes hypersonic missiles

The U.S. Navy has pulled the plug, for now, on a futuristic weapon that fires projectiles at up to seven times the speed of sound using electricity.

The Navy spent more than a decade developing the electromagnetic railgun and once considered putting them on the new, stealthy Zumwalt-class destroyers built at Maine's Bath Iron Works.

But the Defense Department is turning its attention to hypersonic missiles to keep up with China and Russia, and the Navy cut funding for railgun research from its latest budget proposal.

"The railgun is, for the moment, dead," said Matthew Caris, a defense analyst at consultancy Avascent Group.

The removal of funding suggests the Navy saw both challenges in implementing the technology as well as shortcomings in the projectiles' range compared to hypersonic missiles, he said.

The Navy's decision to pause research at year's end frees up resources for hypersonic missiles, directed-energy systems (like lasers) and electronic warfare systems, said Lt. Courtney Callaghan, a Navy spokesperson. Information gleaned during testing will be retained in the event the Office of Naval Research wants to pick up where it left off in the future, she added.

Italian Navy aircraft carrier to get first F-35B 'within a few days'

The Italian Navy aircraft carrier Cavour will receive its first F-35B this month after the vessel started certification work in the U.S. earlier this year to host the aircraft.

The fighter jet is undergoing final checks at the Cameri air base in Italy, home to the country's F-35 final assembly and checkout facility, which is due to turn out 90 F-35s for Italy, including 30 F-35Bs.

"The test flights have been completed, so within a few days [the aircraft] will be available for the Navy to collect and it will [be] delivered directly to the Cavour," said Rear Adm. Dino Torresi, the head of the Navy's air operations.

The Navy previously took delivery of two other F-35Bs, which were sent to the U.S. to join a training program for pilots and technical personnel. The new delivery makes it three out of a final order of 15 aircraft for the Navy. The "B" variant can land vertically and take off on short runways.

Meanwhile, the Cavour undertook certification work in the U.S. this year including sea trials with American jets.

Babcock reveals export opportunities for Type 31 frigate
The British shipbuilder leading the construction of the new Type 31 frigate for the Royal Navy says it is already pursuing five live campaigns to secure exports for the general-purpose warship.

Best interessant dat Polen in dat lijstje opduikt:
"Greece, Indonesia and Poland are currently the front-runners among the five live campaigns being chased by the British, David Lockwood, Babcock International's chief executive, told the parliamentary Defence Committee on June 29."

"A little over a week ago, Babcock announced it had signed a tripartite memorandum of implementation with the Ukrainian and British governments to revitalize the eastern European nation's Navy and shipbuilding industry. The need for a new frigate was among the requirements mentioned by Babcock as being part of discussions, although the Type 31 was not specifically mentioned."

RoKN commissions second and final Dokdo-class amphibious assault ship

28 JUNE 2021

by Gabriel Dominguez & Matteo Scarano & Dae Young Kim

The Republic of Korea Navy (RoKN) has commissioned its second and final Dokdo-class landing platform helicopter (LPH) amphibious assault ship.

The RoKN commissioned Marado , its second Dokdo-class LPH, in a ceremony held on 28 June at the Jinhae Naval Base in South Gyeongsang Province. (RoKN)

Named RoKS Marado (with pennant number 6112), the 14,500-tonne vessel entered service in a ceremony held on 28 June at the Jinhae Naval Base, its future homeport in South Gyeongsang Province.

South Korean shipbuilder Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction (HHIC) began work on the 199.4 m-long, 31 m-wide LPH in 2016 at its facilities in Busan after being awarded a contract in December 2014. The ship was launched in May 2018 and began sea trials a year later.

The RoKN said in a statement that Marado , which will have a crew of 330, has a top speed of 23 kt, a standard range of 10,000 n miles at 18 kt, and a hull draught of 6.6 m. The flight deck is marked with five numbered landing spots on the port side, with two more spots behind the island unit.

Compared with first-of-class Dokdo , which entered service in July 2007, Marado features an improved design, which is the result of experiences made by the service while operating Dokdo.

For instance, Marado , which will operate UH-60P and MUH-1 Marineon helicopters, features a reinforced flight deck to enable joint RoKN operations with US Marine Corps MV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft, among other things. It is also expected to embark an indigenous attack helicopter for the RoK Marine Corps, development of which is expected to be completed by 2031.
