Germany seeks CH-53 replacement, as retirement brought forward
Gareth Jennings, Donauworth - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly | 01 December 2015
The German Air Force (GAF) has begun the process of selecting a new medium/heavy-lift helicopter as it looks to phase its ageing VFW-Sikorsky CH-53G/GS/GA Stallions out of service earlier than originally planned.
Speaking at the site of Airbus Helicopters' Donauworth facility on 30 November, Wolfgang Schoder, CEO of Airbus Helicopters Germany and Head of Light and Governmental Programs, said that the German military is in the very early stages of a replacement process for the 1970s-legacy CH-53, but that he expects the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to issue a solicitation next year for a new platform to enter service in the early 2020s.
"We see no investment in further upgrades [to the CH-53]. It is [Airbus Helicopters'] responsibility to keep it flying through to about 2020, but we are close to the customer and we hear about specifications for a replacement," Schoder said, adding, "We are in constructive discussions with the German MoD [Ministry of Defence] as to our role in such a [replacement] programme."
Airbus Helicopters is currently in the process of putting the last four of 40 CH-53G/GS platforms through the CH-53GA modernisation effort (the remaining 26 CH-53G/GS helicopters in the GAF fleet will remain at that standard for a total fleet of 66 CH-53G/GS/GS platforms).
The CH-53GA is an enhanced variant of the CH-53G/GS, with improvements made primarily to the avionics, communications, and electronic warfare systems, and the integration of a forward looking infrared (FLIR) sensor turret. An internal fuel tank has also been fitted, extending the helicopter's range to 1,200 km, and the airframe has been refurbished.
With the upgrade, it was expected that the CH-53GA-variant would remain operational with the GAF through to at least 2030 and possibly beyond. However, with the upgrade programme set to conclude in 2016 the GAF has now decided to replace the fleet with a new type entirely from 2020 to 2025.

Germany seeks CH-53 replacement, as retirement brought forward

Low-rate production is planned to proceed from 2015 to 2017. The CH-53K is planned to achieve initial operating capability (IOC) in 2019, with full-rate production commencing sometime between then and 2022. The USMC is planning for eight active CH-53K squadrons, one training squadron, and one reserve squadronhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sikorsky_CH-53K_King_Stallion

De V-22 is out of the question.
Germany is moving ahead with an acquisition programme to replace its air force's Sikorsky CH-53 heavy-lift helicopters, with the choice narrowed to two types.
One key driver for Berlin's effort under the fledgling heavy transport helicopter project is the need to purchase a rotorcraft already in production, rather than launching a clean-sheet development programme.
Maj Thomas Knäpper, Luftwaffe capability manager in charge of the programme, says only two heavy-lift helicopters effectively meet that requirement: the Boeing CH-47F Chinook and Sikorsky's CH-53K King Stallion – being developed for the US Marine Corps.
"We want to buy a product already on the market. You could assume that Bell Boeing would come back with the [V-22] Osprey, but it is not as big," he says.
Germany aims to take delivery of its first new helicopter in 2022, which means contract signature needs to take place in around 2018, says Knäpper. The service has defined its technical requirements for the programme, which should lead to the issue of a request for proposals in about 12 months' time, he said, speaking on the sidelines of the IQPC International Military Helicopter conference in London on 19 January.
No figures for the number of rotorcraft to be bought are available, but it is thought Berlin will look to match its current fleet of elderly CH-53G/GA/GS models. Flightglobal's Fleets Analyzer database records a combined 81 of the type as being in current active service.
As the helicopter will be used to support special forces operations and combat search and rescue tasks, an aerial refuelling capability is required, he says. However, Germany presently has no tankers suitable for the role. Although it is a customer of the Airbus Defence & Space A400M, the tactical airlifter is unable to perform in-flight refuelling of rotorcraft.
But Knäpper believes Airbus will have to overcome the issues with its flagship turboprop. "We insist on it [in-flight refuelling], so they will have to deal with the problem over the next seven years," he says. If Airbus cannot provide the required performance level on the A400M, Berlin may instead have to rely on tankers from allies such as France or the USA.
"But if we integrate the equipment in the helicopters from the beginning, it makes it cheaper than doing it later," he adds.
German industrial involvement in the rotorcraft programme is unlikely to extend to the establishment of a local production line for whichever type is selected. Although the predecessor of Airbus Helicopters assembled the current CH-53s in Germany, its participation is likely to be restricted to maintenance and support activities.
"The number of helicopters [to be acquired] will be too low, so it will not be efficient to build a new assembly line in Germany," says Knäpper.

Lockheed upbeat on possible foreign helicopter sales
Lockheed Martin Corp executives on Tuesday said they were optimistic about foreign sales prospects for CH-53K heavy lift helicopters and H-60 Black Hawk helicopters built by its new Sikorsky unit.
Such orders would help offset a slump in commercial helicopter orders triggered by the downturn in oil prices that has slowed demand from the oil and gas sector, Lockheed Chief Financial Officer Bruce Tanner told Reuters at the company's annual media day.
In Germany, Sikorsky's CH-53K helicopter is competing with Boeing Co's CH-47 Chinook helicopter for 60 potential orders, with Germany expected to issue a formal request for proposals in the next three to six months.
Sam Mehta, who heads Sikorsky's defense business, told Reuters that winning the German order would help lower the cost of the 200 CH-53K helicopters Sikorsky is due to build for the U.S. Marine Corps, and could help stimulate more foreign orders.
Mehta said Sikorsky could eventually see dozens of potential CH-53K orders from countries like Japan and Israel that operate current, aging models of the CH-53 helicopter.
He said Germany would need to pick a winner by the end of the year to ensure it could start using the helicopters as planned in 2018 or 2019, but the European immigration crisis had created budget pressures that could curtail military funding.
To facilitate any deal and ensure the participation of German industry, Sikorsky was exploring possible partnerships with several German aerospace firms, including potentially rival helicopter maker Airbus Helicopters, Mehta said.
Sikorsky has worked closely with the Airbus Group unit for a decade, providing logistic support for the UH-72 Lakota helicopter that Airbus builds for the U.S. Army, he said, when asked if Sikorsky could team up with a rival company.
Mehta said Sikorsky was standing by to work with the new Polish government if it decided to cancel a $3 billion order for Airbus helicopters placed by the previous government. He said Sikorsky had pre-built Black Hawk helicopters on hand if needed.
Earlier this year, a Polish deputy defense minister said the deal with Airbus was likely to be scrapped. Members of the new government have said they would rather see the deal awarded to a company that builds the helicopters locally.
Both Sikorsky and AgustaWestland, a unit of Italy's Finmecccanica SpA, have facilities in Poland. Airbus would source work on its helicopters in Poland, but the aircraft would mostly be built in France.

Last advanced Stallions up for delivery in Germany
Fifteen more years of useful service. In 2010, that was the goal of an Airbus Helicopters modification program for German Air Force CH-53G Stallion heavy transport helicopters. Over the past years, these green giants have been getting modernized cockpits, new avionic and warfare suites and countless other upgrades.
The end is near for the modification program, delivering fourty modernized helicopters to the German Air Force. They are known as CH-53GA, signifying 'Germany Advanced'. As it should.
In the Airbus Helicopters Military Support Center (MSC) in Donauwörth, Germany, well over a dozen Sikorsky CH-53s receive attention. Among them are the last of fourty of these airborne workhorses to be upgraded to CH-53GA. When done, the upgrade shows itself by no uncertain means in the cockpit, where avionics and communications systems almost identical to those used in the NH90 and Tiger attack helicopter, present themselves to awaiting pilots. All is contained in a completely new glass cockpit.
Miles away
With five multi-function displays, the new cockpit is miles away from the analogue workplace it used to be. "We're taking out all the old mechanical instruments and we put in multifunctional displays that provide the crew with enormous flexibility and increased efficiency", says Michael Hoofdmann, head of programs at the MSC.
A huge upgrade is the newly designed four-axis autopilot with auto-hover automatic flight control system that is similar to the NH90's auto pilot. An electronic warfare system for threat recognition and electronic self-protection protects crews in hostile environments. A forward looking infrared (FLIR) sensor turret is also part of the update.
Four decades
The first modernized Stallion was handed back to the German Air Force in 2012, close to four decades after the first of 110 helicopters were introduced in German service. Externally, the CH-53GA lacks the big fuel tanks that identified the past CH-53GS update, a program that mainly served to add personnel recovery and extraction capabilities. An internal fuel tank has been installed in the latest variant instead.
Fleet
The current German fleet consist of forty CH-53GA and 26 remaining CH-53GS helicopters, adding up to 66 in total. To examine the remaining service life, one CH-53G has been completely dismantled and inspected for signs of fatigue at Donauwörth. The fleet saw extensive use over the last decades, deploying to Afghanistan and Kosovo. In the same timeframe, all remaining helicopters were transferred from the Germany Army to the German Air Force. The NH90 took the CH-53's place in the Army.
Twilight
Updated or not, truth is the Stallion is in the twilight of its career. Berlin is looking at its options, being either the CH-47F Chinook or... the CH-53K. The 'Kilo' is the latest incarnation of the Stallion, seeing its first flight just last year. There is no road map yet for a purchase, but it seems likely the Germans will decide on a new heavy transport helicopter in the next two or three years. Deliveries are still at least six years away.
Until then, the CH-53GA is the tool of the trade when it comes to heavy helicopter transport in Germany. "They are now state of the art again", concludes Michael Hoofdmann. "No more upgrades needed for these helicopters."

Germany seeks pricing for 41 CH-53K King Stallions
By James Drew, Washington DC | 17 May 2016
The US government is preparing a response to Germany's letter of request for pricing and availability of 41 heavy-lift Sikorsky CH-53K King Stallion helicopters to begin replacing the 80 G-models the country currently operates.
Berlin is considering both the CH-53K and the Boeing CH-47 Chinook to meet its heavy vertical lift requirement, and the US Marine Corps is keen to take advantage of the better pricing that could be achieved by adding a sizable King Stallion order at the front-end of the production ramp.
The new model, which first flew in October, has twice the max gross take-off weight of the legacy CH-53G operated by the Luftwaffe at 40t (88,000lb) with external loads compared to 19t (42,000lb).
US Naval Air Systems Command's H-53 programme manager (PMA-261) Col Henry Vanderborght said at the Navy League Sea-Air-Space conference in Washington DC that adding foreign military customers achieves better production pricing, improve interoperability between allies and lower shared upgrade and sustainment costs.
"The Marines are buying 200 aircraft. Add another roughly 50 aircraft; that's 25% more and tremendous savings for the US government in terms of production costs," says Vanderborght on 16 May. "Beyond production, think about sustainment. Any new software upgrade, any new capability we need: if a foreign partner wants that too, we could share the development costs."
Vanderborght and Sikorsky CH-53K chief Mike Torok believe that Germany is the nearest term opportunity to add an international customer, and the next would be Israel, which operates 23 CH-53s.
The CH-53 users group includes the US Marine Corps, Germany, Israel and Japan, and those operators meet twice yearly to discuss sustainment, support and upgrades. Those nations are kept well informed about the CH-53K's progress.
Torok says Germany has not settled on an official programme timeline yet. In January, Flightglobal reported that Germany ideally wants to sign a deal in 2018 for initial deliveries beginning in 2022. Sikorsky says discussions have ranged from "40 to 60 or so" aircraft and a request for proposals is expected next year.
"We knew all along once we started flying and making this pivot to production that the interest would start peaking and we've gotten some requests from some other countries who are not traditionally CH-53 drives," he says. "The stuff everyone wants to carry is getting heavier, so the basic aircraft have just run out of capability, especially in very hot conditions where you have limitations."

Boeing is upbeat about the Chinook's prospects in Germany, but as the CH-53K programme gathers momentum in anticipation of initial operational capability with four combat-ready aircraft in 2019, the competition is expected to be heated.
Vanderborght says the CH-53K is not a one-for-one replacement because of its outsized lifting capacity, and fewer aircraft means less overall force structure and personnel. Torok says Lockheed Martin-owned Sikorsky expects to build anywhere up to 300 aircraft and is preparing to add Germany at the front end, if needed.
NAVAIR recently put Sikorsky on contract for long-lead parts for the first two aircraft of Lot 1, and is working toward a Milestone C decision that will enable low-rate production to start in 2017.
Two aircraft are already flying, five are in testing, and another eight are at various stages of assembly. Sikorsky completed an internal production readiness review in March, ahead of a formal government review planned for later this year.
All 200 USMC aircraft are expected to be in place by 2029 to achieve full operational capability, with production ramping up to 24 CH-53Ks per year in beginning in 2025.

ILA 2016: Boeing and Sikorsky in Berlin showdown for German CH-53 replacement
Boeing and Sikorsky are going head-to-head at 2016's ILA Airshow in Berlin in a bid to secure a German armed forces (Bundeswehr) requirement to replace its ageing VFW-Sikorsky CH-53G/GS/GA Stallion heavy-lift helicopters.
Both companies are promoting their respective platforms at the event taking place at the Berlin ExpoCenter Airport from 1 to 4 June, following the news first reported by IHS Jane's in December 2015 that the Bundeswehr is to select either the CH-47F Chinook or CH-53K King Stallion as its future replacement.
The German Air Force currently fields 66 CH-53G/GS/GS platforms, the first of which entered service during the 1970s. With Airbus Helicopters tasked with maintaining these aircraft through to 2020, the Bundeswehr is looking for a modern replacement to begin entering service in about the same time frame.
Speaking at the site of Airbus Helicopters' Donauworth facility in late November 2015, the CEO of Airbus Helicopters Germany and Head of Light and Governmental Programs, Wolfgang Schoder, said that the German Ministry of Defence is looking at only the Chinook or King Stallion as these were the only viable 'off-the-shelf' solutions available to fulfil the requirement. This statement was confirmed in January 2016 by a senior Bundeswehr at the IQPC International Military Helicopter conference in London.
A replacement decision is due later in 2016, with a contract to be signed in 2018 and deliveries from 2022.

ILA 2016: Airbus Helicopters discussing CH-53-replacement role for Germany

Airbus Helicopters is talking to both Boeing and Sikorsky about possible future workshare in the Schweren Transporthubschrauber (STH) replacement programme for the German Air Force's ageing CH-53G heavy-lift platforms, the company's CEO said at the ILA Airshow in Berlin.
Guillaume Faury told reporters on 1 June that representatives from Airbus Helicopters have been in discussions with both US companies with a view to future involvement in either a Boeing CH-47F Chinook or Sikorsky CH-53K King Stallion buy by the Bundeswehr.
"We are still waiting on the specifications from the German government, and then we will see [what workshare options might be available to us]. We will have [further] deep discussions with both companies, and then we will partner with one," he said.
Airbus Helicopters is currently responsible for supporting the air force's fleet of 66 VFW-Sikorsky CH-53G/GS/GA Stallions at its site in Donauworth, southern Germany, and is contracted to continue doing so through to 2020.
Faury was keen to state that he has no view on whether the Bundeswehr should opt for either the Chinook or the King Stallion. Wolfgang Schoder, CEO of Airbus Helicopters Germany added to Faury's comments, noting that whatever new platform the Bundeswehr opted to go with, a smooth transition would be especially important.
A formal request for proposals (RfP) for an expected 40 to 60 helicopters is expected to be issued in 2017. The selected platform should then enter Bundeswehr service in about 2022.
Both Boeing and Sikorsky used the occasion of ILA to promote their respective platforms, and to provide some more detail on their likely offerings to the German government once the requirements are known.
Boeing's director of vertical-lift programmes in Germany, Michael Hostetter, said that his company would likely be pitching the CH-47F Extended Range (ER) helicopter. This 'fat tank' version of the Chinook is already in service with Canada (CH-147F), the United Kingdom (HC6), and the United States Special Operations Command (MH-60G), with 80 having been delivered from the Philadelphia production plant to date.

ILA 2016: Sikorsky builds up heavy lift offering
With a request for proposal (RFP) for Germany's Heavy Transport (STH) helicopter programme expected in 2017, Sikorsky is ramping up its efforts to win the programme with its offer of the CH-53K.

Boeing targets October test for improved Chinook rotorblades
Boeing is targeting an October test of new CH-47F Chinook rotorblades to increase its maximum take-off weight by 907kg (2,000lb), despite the upgrade not yet being fully funded by the US Department of Defense.
A US Army-owned Chinook is at the manufacturer's Mesa, Arizona facility where it is undergoing modifications ahead of tests of the honeycomb composite rotorblades, which form part of the service's Block II upgrade plan.
Full evaluations will begin in October, following preliminary trials the previous month. Once fielded, the upgrade will increase the heavy-lift helicopter's useful load to 13,600kg, up from 12,700kg at present.
Although the enhancements are yet to be approved by the US Department of Defense, there is an acknowledgment that "we need to work through Block II to keep the aircraft viable", says Mark Ballew, director of attack helicopter sales at Boeing. A milestone B decision on the upgrade package is expected in the first half of fiscal year 2017.
Boeing is pursuing a Chinook sale to Germany as a replacement for the Luftwaffe's fleet of Sikorsky CH-53Gs. It may offer Berlin the extended-range model – currently performing "remarkably well" with the Royal Canadian Air Force – which has twice the fuel capacity of baseline F-model.
The airframer considers the Chinook to be the "sweet spot" for Germany in terms of lift capabilities, says Ballew.
Modifications, such as those to the rotorblades, along with performance increases, are part of Boeing's plans to provide "more value for less" to customers, by offering clear upgrade paths for its helicopter programmes.
Although declining global defence budgets are putting pressure on sales, Boeing is confident it can increase its market share. And while some orders have been slowed, it has yet to see any cancellations.

"German Air Force likely flies Chinooks in 2020"
The German Air Force will be operating the Boeing "CH-47GE" Chinook from 2020 and onward, as a replacement of its current Sikorsky CH-53G heavy-lift helicopter. Although no official plans have been announced yet, it is a likely scenario looking at the options the military decision makers in Berlin will have to weigh.
While Sikorsky/Lockheed Martin are currently putting the new CH-53K King Stallion through its testing face, the chances of this newer 33 ton rotary wing winning the replacement order for Germany's current G-versions are getting slimmer. Berlin might very well go for the "CH-47GE" (German Edition) of the Boeing Chinook for three very good reasons.
With NATO allies
First, with 40 to 50 million a piece, the most modern Chinook will costs about half of the CH-53K, which has a base price tag of 93 million. Second Boeing is working hard to increase both lift and range of its CH-47 model. Third the interoperability with important NATO allies will improve big time, making even joint maintenance and further cost reduction possible. For example, the US Army's 12th Combat Aviation Brigade in Germany flies the Chinook, as well as the Royal Netherlands Air Force's support to 1 German Dutch Army Corps of 30,000 troops.
The new Chinook
Boeing plans to start testing its newest rotor blade later this year in Mesa, Arizona. Equipped with new honeycomb rotor blades, more powerful engines and other smart solutions like a new digital advanced flight-control system Boeing hopes to increase the maximum take-off weight of its most current CH-47F so the useful load will be almost 30,000 lb (13,600 kilograms). That's 8,000 lb (3,600 kg) more than the projected Block 2 upgrade for the US Army. It puts the new Chinook on the map as air lifter for almost all smaller German Army equipment, all the way up to the Mowag Eagle IV and V wheeled vehicles of which the Bundeswehr has orderd 670.
Royal Canadian Air Force Extended Range
As for distance, the Royal Canadian Air Force already has good experiences with Extend Range fuel tanks on its 15 CH-147F Chinooks flying with 450 Tactical Helicopter Squadron out of Petawawa, Ontario. The choppers are able to operate on distances up to 595 nautical miles (1,100 km) from home before refueling is needed. The CH-53K can fly up to 460 nautical miles (852 km) without reserves, but the Sikorsky's combat range is 90 nautical miles (almost 170 km) less than that of the base-model CH-47F.
Current CH-53GA
Whatever the outcome of the debate to replace the current heavy-lift chopper of the German Armed Forces, the Boeing "CH-47GE" currently has the best cards on the table. Until the new rotary wing will arrive, the Luftwaffe will soldier on with its 40 recently modernized CH-53GA and its remaining 26 CH-53s of the older G/GS standard making up a fleet of 66 impressive machines.

Bell eyes German heavylift requirement for V-22
(https://www.flightglobal.com/assets/getasset.aspx?itemid=65727)
Bell Helicopter is touting its co-developed V-22 tiltrotor for the German air force's heavylift rotorcraft requirement, despite the programme having largely focused on only two other options to date.
While a request for proposals from Berlin is still pending, it has been widely considered that the two main contenders for the Sikorsky CH-53G replacement need are the new CH-53K and the Boeing CH-47F Chinook.
However, Richard Harris, vice-president of international military sales for Bell, told FlightGlobal at the Royal International Air Tattoo that the company is considering offering the V-22 for the requirement, and believes it has key attributes that would appeal to Germany.
One example would be the V-22 Aerial Refuelling System (VARS) that is currently under development, which Harris says could lend itself to the air force's requirements.
While the Osprey does not have the same lift capacity as the CH-53K or Chinook, a mixed fleet of V-22s and one of these options could be considered, Harris suggests.
"We think it is [suitable]," Harris says, adding that even if the request for proposals did not exactly match the V-22's characteristics, Bell Boeing "would still respond to it".
Harris says the UK Royal Navy also remains interested in the type, and that this could increase when the service introduces its Queen Elizabeth-class carriers.
"I think that is going to generate a requirement," he says. "Unfortunately the SDSR [Strategic Defence and Security Review] did not describe a particular requirement...[but] we're trying to keep the Royal Navy informed."
The US Navy's purchase of the type to carry out the carrier on-board delivery role will help keep the production line going, Harris says, and a similar role could be provided for the RN.
The UK is acquiring the Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, and the V-22 has proven its ability to carry the type's Pratt & Whitney F135 powerplant, would could also appeal to the RN.
The Airbus Defence & Space A400M that the Royal Air Force operates has had problems finding a way to refuel rotorcraft, so Harris also thinks that the V-22 with the VARS capabilty could fill this gap.
"We have had the conversation with the RN," he adds.
There is also traction elsewhere in Europe for the tiltrotor, both at the individual nation and NATO levels.
Countries are eyeing the Osprey for special operations, naval resupply and maritime mission support roles, but Harris acknowledges that there is a change of mindset needed to introduce the type.
"The problem we have with the V-22 is that it brings a mission that has been done by something else for some time," he says.
Pooling the capability could be an option – just as some European nations have done with the Boeing C-17 transport – and Harris envisages five nations collectively doing this.
"A pooled training and sustainment operation would reduce the cost," he adds. This is just at a discussion level, Harris notes, "but I know it's supported at NATO HQ".

DONAUWÖRTH, Germany --- Airbus Helicopters has received an order from the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) to retrofit 26 CH-53 heavy transport helicopters.
This contract will cover obsolescence management for components that are no longer available on the market and will begin by replacing them with up-to-date parts.
This retrofit will guarantee the helicopters' operation until at least 2030. The process will start in 2017 and should be completed by 2022. Work will be carried out in Donauworth at Airbus Helicopters' Military Support Center Germany.
"This order enables both the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) and also our Donauwörth plant to plan ahead with certainty," said Wolfgang Schoder, CEO of Airbus Helicopters Deutschland. "Airbus Helicopters has been the German specialist for maintaining, repairing and modernising heavy transport helicopters for decades. We have the necessary infrastructure, highly trained professionals and can guarantee supply for all Bundeswehr models."

Luftwaffe chief expresses preference for Chinook over King Stallion
Sebastian Schulte, Berlin - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
12 May 2017
The German Air Force (Luftwaffe) would prefer the Boeing CH-47F Extended Range (ER) Chinook to fulfil its Schweren Transporthubschrauber (STH) requirement over the Sikorsky's CH-53K King Stallion, the service's chief disclosed on 11 May.
Speaking at European Air Chiefs Conference (EURAC) in Germany, Lieutenant General Karl Müllner said that he preferred the Chinook over the King Stallion as a future replacement platform for the Luftwaffe's current VFW-Fokker/Sikorsky CH-53G/GS/GA Stallion helicopters.
"The question is, do we want an existing and proven helicopter available quickly or a more modern, but not as of yet fully established helicopter [that will be] perhaps delayed?

Airbus Seeks Stake in Future German Heavy Helicopter Program
Airbus On Back Foot Over Helicopter Deal for German Military
Airbus has urged the German government to ensure domestic firms get a big share of a near €4 billion (Dh16.65bn) contract earmarked for the country's next generation of heavy-lift military helicopters.
German defence officials have said they want a low-risk heavy-lift helicopter that already exists, which means the likely supplier will be one of the two biggest US weapons makers - Lockheed Martin or Boeing.
Airbus officials say they do not have a helicopter large enough for Germany's probable military's needs, but want to take a close look at the requirements when they are released by the defence ministry, a move that could occur next year.
Europe's biggest aerospace company and seven German firms including engine maker MTU Aero Engines said on Wednesday they had teamed up to push for a management and maintenance role in the project.
"This is about the future of the German helicopter industry," said Wolfgang Schoder, the chief executive of Airbus Helicopters Deutschland.
The defence ministry has proposed spending €3.84bn for the project through to 2029, although the programme must still be approved by parliament.
The German firms want the ministry to split the procurement of the helicopters from the work of certifying, managing and maintaining the new aircraft that will go on for decades.
This programme is "too big for Germany industry not to be involved", Airbus' Stefan Woelfle told military officials and industry executives.

German Aerospace Companies Visit Sikorsky's West Palm Beach Facility
Sikorsky hosted leading German aerospace companies with engineering, manufacturing and maintenance, repair, overhaul expertise attended the two-day event to discuss the new Marine CH-53K King Stallion helicopter and the German Air Force "Schwerer Transporthubschrauber" (STH) Program. The event took place at Sikorsky's West Palm Beach, Florida facility.
"It is Sikorsky's intent to be heavily involved as the original equipment manufacturer, but to have German suppliers accomplish the majority of the work when it comes to platform sustainment," said Nathalie Previte, vice president of Sikorsky's strategy and business development. "We have several suppliers with whom we are finalizing exclusive relationships and who will form the foundation for the Sikorsky STH team in Germany."
The participants were briefed on the CH-53K aircraft, the program and met the Sikorsky leadership team. The agenda included a program overview, an update on the STH program, the industrialization opportunities on the CH-53K and a tour of the factory and the helicopter.
The CH-53K King Stallion advances Sikorsky's 50 years of manufacturing and operational success with its CH-53A, CH-53D/G, and CH-53E predecessors. Built to thrive on the modern battlefield, including shipboard operations, the CH-53K aircraft is designed to be intelligent, reliable, low maintenance and survivable in the most austere and remote forward operating bases.
With the legacy fleet of the CH-53G we have a long lasting strong relationship with the Bundeswehr, which we plan to strengthen with the CH-53K. The CH-53K will enable the German Armed Forces to conduct real heavy lift operations. Intelligent, reliable, low maintenance and survivable, the CH-53K is the future of German Heavy Lift.

Germany's heavy-lift helo project relatively unaffected by country's political problems
Lockheed Martin does not expect the current difficulties in forming a new German government to have too much of an effect on its efforts to sell its CH-53K King Stallion heavy-lift helicopter into the country.
Speaking to Jane's in late November ahead of the Berlin Security Conference (BSC), Frank Crisafulli, business development lead for heavy-lift helicopters at Sikorsky said that, while there is some current 'churn' within the German political establishment which might cause some short-term slippage, its effect on the Luftwaffe's Schweren Transporthubschrauber (STH) requirement should not be too great.
"There has been a bit of a delay, but we understand that [the next stage] has now gone all the way through the approval channels up to the point of sign-off. There has been some change and churn in the government, which may play in to [the delays] a little bit," Crisafulli said.
Crisafulli said that for the STH requirement that will see Lockheed Martin go up against Boeing and its CH-47F Chinook, the company is now waiting on the German government to hold an industry day to be followed by a request for proposals (RFP). After these steps, a declaration from the German government as to its preferred solution is expected to be made.
The Luftwaffe is looking to procure up to 41 new heavy-lift helicopters to replace its ageing VFW-Sikorsky CH-53G-series platforms, with deliveries slated to begin in 2022.
As part of its preparatory work, the company recently visited the Luftwaffe's two main CH-53 operating bases at Laupheim and Holzdorf to look at what infrastructure might be required and to answer questions from the service.

Germany officially starts process to buy new heavy-lift helicopters
The top ranking officer of the German Armed Forces, Gen. Volker Wieker, has kick started the process to buy a new heavy-lift helicopter for the country, Reuters report.
As per Reuters report, a request for information will be issued in the second half of 2018 for 45 to 60 new helicopters. The winner will be selected in mid-2020 and delivery will start in 2023.

Gebruik is toch veelal boven land.
Rheinmetall and Sikorsky Sign A Strategic Teaming Agreement to Offer CH-53K for Germany's New Heavy Lift Helicopter Competition
Rheinmetall and Sikorsky signed a strategic teaming agreement for competing in the German Air Force "Schwerer Transporthubschrauber" (STH) Program.
Rheinmetall brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the Sikorsky STH team. With Sikorsky's breadth and depth of heavy lift experience and Rheinmetall's leadership as the lead teammate for STH sustainment, the German Air Force will experience the high levels of aircraft availability and reliability that Sikorsky customers have come to expect.
"With Rheinmetall as the strategic partner for Sikorsky, we are convinced that together we provide the best possible state-of-the-art aircraft for the German Air Force as successor for the legacy CH-53G fleet," said Armin Papperger Rheinmetall CEO. "Furthermore, we stand strongly together in offering a cost-effective, reliable solution oriented to the needs of today's operations, and able to evolve with the Armed Forces as its needs change over time."
"Sikorsky has a 45-year history supporting the German Armed Forces fleet of CH-53G aircraft, and we are humbled by the opportunity to continue to serve the German Armed Forces for another 45 years with Sikorsky's CH-53K," said Dan Schultz, president of Sikorsky. "As a former CH-53 pilot, I can attest that this aircraft is truly the most capable heavy lift helicopter we have ever built. Sikorsky's CH-53K, combined with Rheinmetall as our key German partner, is a winning solution for STH."
Sikorsky and Rheinmetall will look to introduce more German teammates in the weeks to come. The team will leverage and build upon the deep knowledge and expertise of the German defense industry.
The CH-53K King Stallion advances Sikorsky's 50 years of manufacturing and operational success of its CH-53A, CH-53D/G, and CH-53E. Built to thrive on the 21st-century battlefield, including shipboard operations, the CH-53K aircraft is an all-new aircraft, using modern intelligent design. The rugged CH-53K is designed to ensure reliability, low maintenance, high availability and enhanced survivability in the most austere and remote forward operating bases.
The U.S. Marine Corps will field the CH-53K as a fully-operational aircraft in 2019. By the time Germany receives its first aircraft, the CH-53K will have been in service with the U.S. Marine Corps for five years. The CH-53K provides the German Armed Forces with a proven heavy lift helicopter that can be entered into service seamlessly without need for upgrades for the next several decades.
The CH-53K helicopter is the best choice for completing missions like humanitarian aid, troop transport, casualty evacuation, support of special operations forces, and combat search and rescue. No matter the mission, the aircraft provides the highest degree of safety for its crew and occupants in all conditions.
With the legacy fleet of the CH-53G, Sikorsky has a long lasting strong relationship with the Bundeswehr, which Sikorsky looks forward to strengthening with the CH-53K. The CH-53K will enable the German Armed Forces to conduct real heavy lift operations. Intelligent, reliable, low maintenance and survivable, the CH-53K is the future of German Heavy Lift.

ILA 2018: Luftwaffe set for imminent release of heavy-lift helo RFP
The Schwere Transporthubschrauber (STH) replacement programme for the Luftwaffe's ageing VFW-Sikorsky CH-53G-series helicopters is soon to enter into its realisation phase, with the request for proposals (RFP) set to be issued in May.
Boeing and Lockheed Martin are competing the requirement with their CH-47F Chinook and CH-53K King Stallion platforms respectively. The Luftwaffe is looking for between 40 and 60 new helicopters to enter service from 2023 to coincide with the planned out-of-service date of 2025 for the nearly 70 CH-53GA/GS/GE platforms.
Speaking ahead of the ILA Berlin Airshow running from 25 to 29 April, Colonel Bernhard Martin of the Luftwaffe's Plans and Policy Office spelled out some of the history of the STH requirement, the goals the Luftwaffe has for the requirement, and the current state of proceedings.
"With the CH-53 in use today a number of capability shortfalls have been identified and it is expected to be removed from service in 2025," Col Martin said. "The end of industrial support in combination with other technical issues is resulting already in substantial shortfalls in our flying hours [from the required 9,000 hours per year to just 6,000 hours]. Also, the German Air Force has agreed within the NATO Defence Planning Process [NDPP] to support CSAR [combat search and rescue] and SOF [special operations forces] missions. These requirements cannot be accomplished with the CH-53 without substantial limitations."
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) Planning Office and the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment and Information technology are the two relevant offices for German military procurement processes and decisions, as well as in-service support. Decisions are usually taken for a timeline of about 15 years, comparing actual and future capability requirements. When the services and the procurement managers identify a potential future capability gap, the procurement process is initiated.

Boeing unveils team for German Chinook bid
Boeing has partnered with 10 aerospace suppliers that have operations in Germany to support its bid to supply CH-47 Chinooks for the nation's heavy-lift helicopter competition.
In addition to several German equipment and training specialist suppliers, the group includes CAE, Diehl Defence, Honeywell, Liebherr, Rockwell Collins and Rolls-Royce.
Boeing says it reached agreements with the partners to provide "local long-term support and training" services, including maintenance, air crew and technical training, research and development efforts, and "supply chain enhancements".
The initial group represent the "first of many partners" for the programme and "additional German companies will be joining Boeing's industrial plan for collaboration on communication and mission systems integration", the US airframer says.
Speaking at the ILA air show in Berlin on 25 April, Boeing's director for vertical lift programmes in Germany, Michael Hostetter, ruled out a German Chinook production line because that would be incompatible with the country's "very clear" requirement to have a "low-risk, off-the-shelf" solution.
He says the tandem-rotor helicopter would provide a "proven and reliable" and "extremely affordable" platform for the Bundeswehr.
Boeing's offer will either be based on the standard CH-47F model or extended-range MH-47G version; both variants can be fitted with in-flight refuelling systems – a key requirement for Germany, says Hostetter.
However, he declines to elaborate on any potential further configurations, as Berlin has not yet released a final request for proposals. That is expected by year-end, or in early 2019.
Hostetter says Boeing will be able to deliver aircraft from its Philadelphia production line with a lead time of 36-40 months.
Boeing adds that if Germany were to select the Chinook, the aircraft would provide the country with "interoperability that other helicopters cannot" as several regional neighbours – the Netherlands, Greece, Italy, Spain, Turkey and the UK – operate the type.
Sikorsky's CH-53K is the other contender for the heavy-lift helicopter contract.

Timeline for German heavy-lift helo unaffected by budget 'drama'
https://www.janes.com/article/84848/timeline-for-german-heavy-lift-helo-unaffected-by-budget-drama
Germany opens heavy transport helicopter competition
The German military has officially begun its search for a heavy transport helicopter to replace 80 CH-53G models by 2025, when they will start leaving service.
On Feb. 28, the German Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Use of the Federal Armed Forces (BAAINBw) published a tender notice for the Schwere Transporthubschrauber (STH) — heavy-lift helicopter — program.
The rotorcraft should be capable of transporting personnel and equipment and have a maximum take-off weight greater than 20 tons. Thus far, only the Sikorsky CH-53K King Stallion and Boeing CH-47F Chinook have shown they meet the requirements, German officials said.
Bids for the nearly $6.4 billion program are due by May 27. The Luftwaffe — the German Air Force — is to field 44 to 60 STHs between 2023 and 2031 after a final contract award in 2021. Included in the contract value are some maintenance, repair, and overhaul, as well as the training of pilots and technicians.
Like the CH-53Gs now in service, the STHs will be assigned to Luftwaffe 64 (HSG 64) Helicopter Squadron at the Holzdorf and Laupheim air bases.
While Sikorsky has an incumbent edge in the competition, the U.S. Defense Department Director of Test and Evaluation's annual report last month said that the CH-53K had "multiple design deficiencies" found during post-delivery testing — shortfalls that are likely to delay operational testing and entry to service with the Marine Corps until at least 2021.
A planned initial operational capability (IOC) declaration in December 2019 "will be delayed" and the CH-53K program office is "working a major schedule revision" to address a list of structural problems found during system development and demonstration, according to the DOT&E report.
"The Program Office is requesting additional funding to complete sufficient developmental testing to enter [initial operational testing and evaluation] with a [key performance parameter] compliant system," the report said. "Technical problems have extended [System Development and Demonstration] well beyond original projections."
IOT&E is now projected to start in early 2021 so "multiple design deficiencies discovered during early testing" can be corrected, according to the report. The deficiencies include airspeed indication anomalies, low reliability of the main rotor gearbox, hot gas impingement on aircraft structures, tail boom and tail rotor structural problems, overheating of main rotor dampers, fuel system anomalies, high temperatures in the number-two engine bay and hot gas ingestion by the number-two engine, which could reduce available power.
Once it enters service, the King Stallion will be the largest single-rotor helicopter in the U.S. military inventory. It will be able to carry 27,000 pounds of cargo compared to the 9,000 pounds a CH-53E can carry, effectively tripling the Marine Corps' ship-to-shore lift capacity.

German Military Helicopters Get 'Mandatory' Funding In Budget Plan
BERLIN --- A German military helicopter tender likely to be fought out between U.S. arms makers Lockheed Martin and Boeing will get "mandatory" funding of 1.61 billion euros ($1.8 billion) under German budget plans, a government document shows.
Some lawmakers and industry officials had worried that the long-awaited tender could be postponed because Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen secured only half the 4 billion euro increase in military spending she had sought for 2020.
However, the document, which is due to be approved by Chancellor Angela Merkel's cabinet this week, singled out the heavy-lift helicopter as the only major arms program on a list of "mandatory elements" of a new four-year budget plan.
The helicopter program is expected to cost Germany around 4 billion euros ($4.54 billion) in the longer term, a rich prize for the winning bidder.
Germany's defense ministry has previously said it expects to choose either of two U.S. helicopter models, the twin-rotor CH-47 Chinook helicopter built by Boeing, or the new CH-53K King Stallion built by Lockheed's Sikorsky helicopter unit.

Heavy Transport Helicopter for Long-Haul Operations: CH-53K Masters the Art of Inflight Refuelling with KC-130J
The CH-53K King Stallion heavy transport helicopter has successfully completed several inflight refuelling tests with a KC-130J Super Hercules tanker of the U.S. Marine Corps.
Lasting several hours, the test flight took place at the beginning of April off the east coast of the United States. Newly developed, the latest member of the Sikorsky family of CH-53 transport helicopters has thus passed another major milestone. Inflight refuelling has also been defined as an essential capability for the Bundeswehr's new heavy transport helicopter, or STH.
In response to the current Bundeswehr request for tenders, Lockheed Martin subsidiary Sikorsky and Rheinmetall have joined forces to offer Germany the top-performing CH-53 K, the most advanced, most intelligent helicopter on the market today.
In particular, the CH-53K's advanced fly-by-wire flight control significantly reduces the strain on the crew during inflight refuelling operations. This was confirmed during the recently conducted flight tests. The ability to refuel in mid-air is a requirement for covering long distances without having to make intermediate stops, and substantially expands the CH-53K's operational flexibility. It means that it can be redeployed to distant areas of operation, for instance, and remain aloft for extended periods. The helicopter can carry more personnel and materiel for longer distances and under more challenging operational conditions than any other aircraft of its kind.
Besides the same tanker aircraft, in future the Bundeswehr inventory will include the C-130J transport plane made by Lockheed Martin. The cargo hold of the C-130J is designed to use the 463L-standard air cargo pallets, which the CH-53K can also transport. Using the same pallets in the fixed wing aircraft and transport helicopter offers immense advantages when it comes to loading and unloading materiel.
This interoperability reinforces in a fundamental way military cooperation between France and Germany: at Évreux in Normandy, the two nations are currently creating a joint fleet of C-130J/KC-130J aircraft. The use of standardized air freight pallets also enables interoperability with other transport planes in Europe such as the A400M, a decisive advantage during joint operations.
In the meantime, full-scale production of the CH-53K has begun at the Sikorsky plant in Connecticut, as planned. In all, 31 aircraft are currently at different stages of completion. The first USMC CH-53K squadron is expected to be operational by 2023/24.
In Germany the CH-53K is now in the running for the Bundeswehr's "Schwerer Transporthubschrauber STH" procurement project; the decision as to which heavy transport helicopter to buy is expected to come at the beginning of 2021.
The first aircraft could – as required – be delivered starting in 2024, thus enabling a seamless transition from the current CH-53G fleet, coupled with training of personnel and putting the necessary logistics in place necessary for operating in Germany. By this time, the CH-53 helicopters supplied to the USMC will already be fully operational, and Marine flight crews and maintenance technicians will be able to draw on their experience to assist in initial training of Bundeswehr personnel.
The transition from the CH-53G now in service with the Bundeswehr to the new STH fleet of heavy transport helicopters is to be complete by 2032.

Duitsland staakt aanbesteding luchtmachthelikopter

Competing teams continue to pursue German CH-53 replacement after tender cancellation
06 OCTOBER 2020
by Nicholas Fiorenza
The two teams competing for the Luftwaffe's future Schwerer Transporthubschrauber (Heavy Transport Helicopter, STH) requirement still plan to offer their helicopters after the Bundeswehr cancelled the tender. The German Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced in a press release on 29 September that the tender was cancelled because it "would be unlikely to be realised within the allocated budget while meeting all requirements".
The Bundestag, the German parliament, committed EUR5.6 billion (USD6.6 billion) to the STH programme in November 2018, but Janes understands that the two competing proposals – the Boeing H-47 and Sikorsky CH-53K – would have cost about EUR10 billion. Neither company officially confirmed this to Janes, with Rheinmetall, which is the chief partner in the Sikorsky team offering the CH-53K, on 2 October citing public procurement law and Boeing saying on 1 October that it "cannot comment on live commercial matters and ongoing negotiations with the BAAINBw [Bundesamt für Ausrüstung, Informationstechnik und Nutzung der Bundeswehr, Germany's Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support]".
In its press release, the German MoD said the STH requirement would be re-examined but that a contract would not be ready in 2021, although the aim is still to replace the CH-53G, the service life of which ends in 2030, "in a timely manner". The ministry added, "the STH project is of very high priority for the Bundeswehr, as air transport is of paramount importance for the mobility and responsiveness of the armed forces, as well as for humanitarian and support services. The project will therefore be continued with changed specifications".
Noting this, Boeing stated in an email to Janes

Boeing, Lockheed Martin respond to cancelled German heavy-lift helo tender
14 JANUARY 2021
by Gareth Jennings
The two bidders for Germany's heavy-lift helicopter requirement have responded to the country's decision to cancel the Schwerer Transporthubschrauber (STH) tender without warning in late 2020.
Both Boeing and Lockheed Martin told Janes on 13 January that they remain ready to support the Luftwaffe's continued requirement to replace its 70 VFW-Sikorsky CH-53G-series Stallions with between 40 to 60 H-47 Chinook or CH-53K King Stallion helicopters respectively, although the latter added that it is seeking a review from the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology, and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) into the reasons behind the cancellation.
"After careful evaluation, [Lockheed Martin subsidiary] Sikorsky has decided to move forward with a request for review from the BAAINBw on its decision to cancel the STH programme," Lockheed Martin told Janes . "We believe we have a compelling case in this regard. We are confident that we offer the most valuable and capable solution to meet the needs of the German armed forces while providing robust opportunities for German industry. We remain committed to supporting the German armed forces with its transition from the legacy Sikorsky CH-53G helicopter fleet and look forward to continuing dialogue with the German government regarding the CH-53K helicopter as its next heavy-lift solution."
For its part, Boeing told Janes

Germany seeks new STH bids from Boeing, Lockheed Martin
27 JANUARY 2021
by Gareth Jennings
Germany has resurrected its cancelled heavy lift helicopter programme, with both competitors invited to submit new bids to the Ministry of Defence (MoD).
Lockheed Martin's Rheinmetall partner disclosed on 27 January that the Schwere Transporthubschrauber (STH) cancelled in late 2020 has been relaunched, with Boeing and Lockheed Martin asked to submit new bids based on baseline versions of the H-47 Chinook and CH-53K King Stallion.
"Having cancelled the so-called STH tender last year, the German Ministry of Defence is currently soliciting bids for the former competitors from the US government in a so-called Foreign Military Sales (FMS) process. Such a programme typically provides for the purchase of the basic version of an aircraft," Rheinmetall said in a statement announcing an expansion of the CH-53K industrial team in Germany.
Under the STH programme, the Luftwaffe seeks to replace its 70 VFW-Sikorsky CH-53G-series Stallions with between 40 to 60 Chinook or King Stallion helicopters respectively. With the tender having been launched in 2018, the MoD unexpectedly announced a cancellation in September 2020, citing budgetary concerns with the planned multi-million Euro procurement. Specifically, it said that the project would be unlikely to be realised within the allocated budget while meeting all of the Luftwaffe's requirements. At that time the MoD said, "The aim remains to replace the previous model CH-53G in a timely manner. The project will therefore [continue] with changed specifications."
Though the STH requirements have never been publicly disclosed, Janes

Botched military helo tender shall remain kaput, German court rules
Germany – Germany's go-to court for federal procurement disputes has ruled that the German ministry of defense cannot be forced to resume a tender for the acquisition of heavy transport helicopters that officials suddenly nixed last fall over cost worries.
The decision by a court of the Federal Cartel Office follows Lockheed Martin-Sikorsky's protest against the cancellation. Executives had said the legal pressure was meant to test the waters in an unusual federal procurement situation involving billions of dollars.
Lockheed Martin and Boeing were the only bidders in an effort to replace Germany's CH-53G helicopters when the government here walked away from the procurement process, offering the CH-53K King Stallion and the CH-47 Chinook, respectively.
While court upheld the government's decision to abandon the tender, its March 5 ruling still found the move to be unlawful, according to a statement published Tuesday on the Federal Cartel Office website. That's because the defense ministry failed to properly document its argument that the cost of the two offers was unacceptably high, the statement read.

Sikorsky appeal puts German heavy-lift competition in limbo
Germany's heavy-lift helicopter plans have taken another unexpected twist, with future developments hinging on a decision from the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court.
An appeal by Sikorsky to have the German heavy-lift helicopter competition reinstated in its original guise means that alternative plans drawn up by the German MoD are on hold for at least three months and could potentially be scrapped altogether.

Boeing and Airbus Helicopters sign strategic H-47 Chinook partnership to support German Army STH requirements
Boeing and Airbus Helicopters on March 25 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to partner on the H-47 Chinook in support of Germany's Schwerer Transporthubschrauber (STH) heavy-lift helicopter requirements.
"We are pleased that Airbus Helicopters has joined our team of strategic partners on the H-47 Chinook program for Germany, and together we will provide the strongest offering to the Bundeswehr," said Mark Cherry, Boeing vice president and general manager, Vertical Lift programs. "The Chinook has been the preferred heavy-lift helicopter in Europe for decades and a cornerstone for a multitude of NATO operations. It is the only heavy-lift helicopter capable of providing Germany immediate interoperability with allied nations and is significantly more powerful, versatile and agile than any other aircraft in its class."
The new partnership between Boeing and Airbus aims at bolstering German defense readiness while supporting German industry and economic growth. The partnership will draw on the strengths and combined expertise of the world's leading aerospace companies to deliver advanced capability, readiness and innovative solutions as part of the German Chinook industry offering.
"Building on decades of experience as a partner of the Bundeswehr, Airbus Helicopters is excited to join Boeing's Chinook Germany industry team and to partner with Boeing on delivering maximum operational availability to the Bundeswehr," said Wolfgang Schoder, general manager of Airbus Helicopters in Germany. "The H-47 Chinook is a proven, mature program in service with many of our allies, and is the optimum solution for Germany with an excellent price-performance ratio."
The partnership agreement builds on the existing Chinook partnership team consisting of AERO-Bildung GmbH, CAE GmbH, ESG Elektroniksystem- und Logistik-GmbH, Lufthansa Technik AG, Honeywell Aerospace and Rolls-Royce Deutschland Ltd. & Co. KG.Boeing is committed to working with the German industry on aircraft sustainment, including post-delivery modifications and installations, aircraft maintenance, supply chain services, training and logistical support, as well as the potential for sub-systems Maintenance Repair and Overhaul work.
"The partnership with Airbus Helicopters reaffirms our commitment to strengthen cooperation with German industry," said Dr. Michael Haidinger, president, of Boeing Germany. "With our Chinook offering and together with our German industry partners, we will create more than 500 highly skilled jobs in-country, all in direct support of the Bundeswehr's heavy-lift mission requirements."
As chosen by eight NATO nations – Netherlands, Italy, Greece, Spain, Turkey, United Kingdom, Canada and the United States of America – the Chinook has proven its unique capabilities and mission readiness in multiple theatres and has delivered on many other mission requirements, including air-to-air refueling, medevac, troop transport, search and rescue and humanitarian and disaster relief, and special operations. Chinook air-to-air refueling operations have spanned the globe and the number of tanker hookups, behind a variety of tanker aircraft, is estimated to be in the tens of thousands.

Germany dismisses Chinook report but plans heavy-lift helicopter decision soon

The German MoD has stated that it will publicly announce which aircraft it intends on buying in its long-running Schwerer Transporthubschrauber (STH) heavy-lift helicopter programme in the 'coming weeks'.
This is despite a recent report from the newspaper Bild am Sonntag, citing government sources, that a fleet of 60 Boeing CH-47 Chinooks will be purchased.

The German government announced today that it has chosen the Boeing CH-47F Chinook as its future heavy lift helicopter.
The Chinook beat out Lockheed Martin Sikorsky's CH-53K heavy lift helicopter for the contract award. Boeing will deliver 60 helicopters under the deal, according to Reuters. The Germany parliament still has to approve to deal.
"Boeing is honored the German government has selected the CH-47F Chinook for its STH heavy-lift helicopter requirements," Boeing said in a statement. "With the Chinook, Germany will operate the most affordable, proven and NATO interoperable heavy-lift helicopter. We look forward to working with the U.S. and German governments to finalize this sale under the Foreign Military Sales process."
The German Ministry of Defense canceled the heavy-lift competition in 2020 after Lockheed and Boeing's proposals were too expensive, according to Defense News. The government later rebooted the competition.
Germany is aiming to replace its aging fleet of Sikorsky CH-53Gs through the new helicopter program, known as Schwerer Transporthubschrauber in Germany.
"With this model we are strengthening our ability to cooperate in Europe. It's modern, proven & already being used by NATO partners," the defense ministry tweeted.
In March, Boeing announced a partnership with German aerospace giant Airbus to compete in the Chinook contest. Other companies partnered with Boeing for the competition are AERO-Bildung GmbH, CAE Elektronik GmbH, ESG Elektroniksystem- und Logistik-GmbH, Lufthansa Technik, Honeywell Aerospace and Rolls-Royce Deutschland.
The Chinook is flown by is flown by 19 countries across the world, including eight NATO countries.
"With Chinook's unique capabilities, air to air refueling, and special note of interoperability with other NATO customers, I think that is the logical choice for Germany as they move forward with their heavy lift aircraft modernization program," Heather McBryan, Boeing's director of business development for H-47 and future vertical lift programs at Boeing, told reporters at a conference in April.
A statement from a Lockheed Martin spokesperson said the company was "disappointed" in the German Ministry of Defense decisions and said the company is "awaiting a debrief from the German MoD on its decision."
"We remain confident the Sikorsky CH-53K King Stallion is the safest, most modern, capable, and reliable heavy-lift helicopter available today," the spokesperson said. "The CH-53K can provide significantly more advanced operational capabilities, aerial refueling, extended range for humanitarian missions, and unmatched heavy lift capabilities with far fewer aircraft, logistical support, maintenance, training and operating cost than any heavy lift aircraft flying today."

Boeing pushing to get German Chinooks under contract
Boeing is pressing to get under contract the CH-47F Chinooks that Germany recently selected for its Schwerer Transporthubschrauber (STH) requirement, programme officials said on 22 June.
Speaking at the ILA Berlin Air Show, Michael Hostetter, vice-president, Boeing Defense, Space & Security, Germany, said that following the 1 June selection decision by the German Bundeswehr, he was "very much looking forward" to getting these helicopters under contract.
"This has been a long process, and a very challenging process," Hostetter said of the selection process to date, noting that if a contract were to be delivered in the first quarter of 2023 as expected, deliveries to the German customer could commence as soon as the first quarter of 2026 (although the timeline itself would be defined in the contract).
Boeing was selected to deliver 60 Block 2 CH-47F Chinooks to replace the Luftwaffe's 70 VFW-Sikorsky CH-53G-series Stallion helicopters, beating off competition from Lockheed Martin and its CH-53K King Stallion. The Foreign Military Sales (FMS) deal is valued at EUR5.1 billion (USD5.4 billion).

Germany will be the second Block 2 customer after the UK, which has ordered 14 H-47 (Extended Range) model Chinooks. They are widely expected to be configured like MH-47Gs flown by U.S. Special Forces.
Boeing is remanufacturing small numbers of Block 1 CH-47Fs to the Block 2 standard for the U.S. Army. Company officials suggest the UK and German orders could form part of a Lot 3 production batch.

US army standard te gebruiken?

8x AW-169M (SOF configuratie) = 6 operators x 8 = 48 man
4x CH-47F SOF = 24 operators x 4 = 96 man

Germany will receive the complete CH-47F fleet over the next eight years
Germany is set to receive its complete CH-47F fleet within the next eight years. The German Ministry of Defense announced the acquisition of the CH-47F Chinook for 5.2 billion euros on June 1, 2022. These heavy-lift helicopters are intended to replace the aging fleet of CH-53G helicopters, which are nearing 50 years of service. The German Air Force expects to receive its first Boeing CH-47F Block II helicopter in 2027, with all 60 aircraft to be delivered by 2032.
The helicopters, purchased for 7 billion euros, will replace the CH-53s that have been in service for nearly half a century and are set to retire in 2030. These acquisitions are part of a special 100 billion euro defense fund established after the onset of the war in Ukraine to overhaul the country's defense equipment, including F-35 aircraft and Arrow missile defense systems.
The CH-47Fs will be based at air bases in Manching, Laupheim, and Altenstadt in the south of the country, as well as Schönewalde, which will serve as the main base with three squadrons, and Celle. Laupheim, which will house 12 aircraft, and Schönewalde will feature training facilities and undergo significant modifications to accommodate the helicopters and capabilities, with 500 million euros invested in the latter.
The first two helicopters will remain in the US for certification and validation, and the third aircraft will be the first to arrive in Germany, between September and November 2027. FMS support will accompany the aircraft until the end of 2030, after which full manufacturer maintenance will take over.
The aircraft will be equipped with a specific suite of equipment, including the Common Infrared Countermeasure (CIRCM) system, infrared suppression, rotor brake, rescue winch, ice detector, ballistic protection, aero-medical equipment, and Link 16 communication equipment.
At the Defence iQ's International Military Helicopter conference on February 28, Colonel Christian Guntsch, advisor to the air chief for CH-47F at the German Air Force Headquarters, emphasized that specifically German equipment would include communications for civil operations, medical evacuation, and Link 16 communications.
Given the wide array of Chinook operators, particularly NATO operators, there are opportunities for cooperation in operations, training, and also for spare parts and maintenance.
The CH-47F Chinook, a highly advanced model of the CH-47 series, first entered production in the early 2000s with its initial entry into service in 2007. Developed by Boeing for the United States Army and other defense forces worldwide, it is a twin-engine, tandem-rotor heavy-lift helicopter. Designed for troop movement, artillery placement, and battlefield resupply, the CH-47F features significant upgrades over its predecessors, including an advanced cockpit management system, improved avionics, and an enhanced airframe for greater survivability. It boasts a top speed of 175 mph (282 km/h) and a maximum lift capacity of more than 21,000 pounds (9,525 kg), making it one of the most capable heavy-lift helicopters in operation today.

Army CH-47's.

RNLAF helps Luftwaffe prepare Chinook capability
The Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) is helping the Luftwaffe prepare for its upcoming Chinook heavy-lift helicopter capability, dispatching one of its own helicopters to the type's future operating station in mid-April.
The Bundeswehr said on 18 April that an RNLAF CH-47F Block 1 Chinook landed for the first time at Holzdorf Air Base (also known as Schönewalde), south of Berlin, to help the Luftwaffe prepare for the arrival of the first of its CH-47F Block II Chinook Standard Range (SR) air-to-air refuelling (AAR)-capable heavy-lift helicopters from 2027 to 2032.
"With the future stationing of the CH-47, Holzdorf Air Base will become a hub for helicopter transport. The [Luftwaffe] is gaining initial experience with the Chinook transport helicopter with its Dutch allies – in flight operations, refuelling, and training," the Bundeswehr said.
Holzdorf Air Base is currently the main operating base for the Luftwaffe's fleet of 70 VFW-Sikorsky CH-53G-series Stallion helicopters that are to be replaced by 60 Chinooks under the Schwerer Transporthubschrauber (STH) requirement.

Uitbreiding infrastructuur is gestart
