Best prima.

NATO to replace its E-3A by new E-7 AWACS surveillance aircraft

According to Reuters, quoting the General Manager of the North Atlantic Treaty Ogranization (NATO) agency that manages the Airborne Warning & Control Systems (AWACS) fleet Michael Gschossmann, reported that the alliance might switch from the ageing E-3A surveillance aircraft fleet to the E-7 AWACS aircraft.

Michael Gschossmann told Reuters NATO could follow the lead of member states Britain and Turkey in purchasing the E-7, a newer radar plane also built by Boeing. Those aircraft, he said, were large enough to add potential new capabilities, such as operating drones for expanded surveillance, in coming years.

The E-7 is based on a Boeing 737-700, with the addition of an advanced Multi-Role Electronically Scanned Array (MESA) radar, and 10 state-of-the-art mission crew consoles which can track airborne and maritime targets simultaneously.

It is a highly advanced aircraft, providing an airborne early warning and control platform that can gather information from a wide variety of sources, analyse it, and distribute it to other assets.

"Why don't we bet on the proven technology that we already have in the E-7 and provide NATO with a certain number of those aircraft? That would give us a basic capability that could be expanded in the future," Michael Gschossmann said.

UAE takes delivery of first Saab GlobalEye

By Craig Hoyle | 29 April 2020

The United Arab Emirates' first of potentially five GlobalEye swing-role surveillance aircraft has touched down in Abu Dhabi following a delivery flight from Linkoping, Sweden.

Arriving on 29 April, the aircraft was the second of three GlobalEyes prepared for the UAE, and first flown as SE-RMZ in January 2019. This asset had been used primarily for system-level testing, including of its data links, and command and control trials in support of the development activity.

Acceptance testing will now be conducted by UAE air force personnel, with this process supported by Saab's in-country team. It has already delivered training for the customer's pilots and ground-system operators.

A schedule for subsequent deliveries has not been disclosed, but Saab chief executive Micael Johansson notes that the company has a "rather tight schedule".

Once operational, GlobalEye will provide the UAE with the capability to simultaneously perform surveillance of airborne, land and maritime threats. Its sensor suite includes Saab Erieye ER airborne early warning and Leonardo Seaspray 7500E maritime search radars.

Saab launched the Bombardier Global 6000 long-range business jet-based GlobalEye with a two-aircraft order at the Dubai air show in November 2015. The UAE subsequently signed for a third unit, before Saab last November announced that it was in negotiations to deliver a further two.

Johansson says discussions are continuing with the UAE over the follow-on deal, which the company has previously valued at around $1 billion.

"We are still in negotiations, according to the plan," he says, adding: "I look forward to concluding that [process] as quickly as possible."

While Bombardier has progressed production to the Global 6500 airframe, Johansson says Saab has options to acquire two more green examples in the 6000 configuration to meet UAE requirements.

Johansson says Saab is confident of securing further orders for GlobalEye, with Finland, South Korea and Sweden viewed as potential future users. He describes adapting the system for Bombardier's Global 6500 as "not a major effort", but rather "an incremental work package".

Saab to provide more Erieye AEW&C aircraft

Saab announced on 18 May that it has received an order from an unnamed customer for its Saab 2000 Erieye AEW&C solution, under a SEK1.55 billion ($158.37 million) contract.

An undisclosed number of aircraft will be delivered between 2020 and 2023.

Saab will carry out the work in Sweden at sites in Arboga, Gothenburg, Järfälla, Linköping and Luleå.

The AEW&C system comprises the Saab 2000 aircraft equipped with the Swedish company's Erieye airborne radar and a range of other sensors.

According to Shephard Defence Insight, launch customer Pakistan took delivery of four aircraft between 2009 and 2010. Three of these were damaged in a 2012 terrorist attack, including one which was written off. The two remaining aircraft were repaired locally and returned to service.

Pakistan ordered three more Saab 2000 Erieyes in 2017 for $152 million. The final aircraft in this order was delivered to the Pakistan Air Force in April 2019.

In 2014, Saudi Arabia took delivery of two Saab 2000 Erieyes modified from secondhand Swedish transport aircraft.

Boeing Names STS Aviation Services in Birmingham as Key Wedgetail Supplier

LONDON,  May 20, 2020 -

Boeing [NYSE: BA] has selected STS Aviation Services and its Birmingham site for the conversion work on the United Kingdom's fleet of five Wedgetail Airborne Early Warning (AEW) Mk1 aircraft.

The conversion work – turning commercial 737 Next Generation airliners into a modern airborne battle management fleet – will create more than 100 highly skilled jobs: 90 with STS Aviation Services and 30 more with Boeing. The Birmingham-based employees will join the 50 Boeing employees already working on the Wedgetail programme throughout the UK, including at Bristol, Yeovil and RAF Waddington. The new work will be done at the hangar formerly operated by Monarch Aircraft Engineering at Birmingham Airport.

The Royal Air Force (RAF) announced in March 2019 a contract for five Wedgetail aircraft, guaranteeing the UK the world's most effective AEW&C aircraft at a fixed price. The Wedgetail's advanced radar and 10 state-of-the-art mission crew consoles can track airborne and maritime targets simultaneously, allowing crews to direct offensive and defensive forces while maintaining continuous surveillance of an operational area.

The Wedgetail is a proven aircraft that is currently in service around the world, including by Royal Australian Air Force, which used the aircraft on operations in the battle against Daesh in Iraq and Syria. It has been continuously improved since its inception, and it is the most capable aircraft of its type.

"We are thrilled to be partnering with STS Aviation Services in Birmingham on the Wedgetail," said Anna Keeling, managing director of Boeing Defence UK. "Wedgetail will provide the UK with the most advanced and reliable aircraft of its type in the world at a fixed price, and this work will provide good jobs for the many skilled aerospace engineers and mechanics in and around Birmingham."

Boeing and STS Aviation Services, which also operates a facility in Newquay in Cornwall, have already started recruiting in key areas for the new work in Birmingham.

"Being awarded this contract is not only great news for STS Aviation Services and Boeing, it's also great news for the Birmingham region, and a much-needed jolt for UK aviation," said Mick Adams, senior vice president and CEO of STS Aviation Services. "We have a long and favourable history working with Boeing, and we're excited that this work will be completed at our new state-of-the-art aircraft maintenance facility in Birmingham."

The first two US-based aircraft have been stripped to their frames and will arrive in the UK later this year. The first Wedgetail will be delivered to the RAF in 2023 and will based at RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire. STS Aviation Services joins other UK suppliers on the programme: Leonardo, which will deliver an integrated Defensive Aids System from its operation in Luton, and a project management and design team from Ridge, which is working with Boeing to design the facility that will house the Wedgetail fleet.

The work was previously announced for Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group. Marshall remains a valued supplier to Boeing and the two companies will continue their partnership on other programmes like the P-8.

Boeing's command-and-control aircraft expertise began in 1977, when it first modified a 707 aircraft for the United States. With the Wedgetail, the RAF will join an AEW&C fleet of 14 aircraft in operation around the world with the Republic of Korea Air Force, Royal Australian Air Force and Turkish Air Force.

Boeing Chooses Leonardo to Provide Wedgetail Protection System Designed and Built in the UK

LONDON,  May 20, 2020 -

Boeing [NYSE: BA] has selected Leonardo to deliver an integrated Defensive Aids System (DAS) for the United Kingdom's new fleet of five Wedgetail Airborne Early Warning (AEW) MK1 aircraft.

"This contract award is another milestone toward the UK receiving the world's most advanced command-and-control aircraft," said Anna Keeling, managing director of Boeing Defence UK. "We're pleased to be working with Leonardo to add this key component of the aircraft from right here in the UK."

Fully designed, developed and manufactured in the UK, the system will provide protection for the Wedgetail, which the Ministry of Defence (MOD) chose in March 2019, guaranteeing the UK the world's most effective AEW&C aircraft at a fixed price. The Wedgetail's advanced systems can detect emissions from airborne, maritime and ground targets, allowing crews to direct offensive and defensive forces while maintaining continuous surveillance of an operational area.

"This selection reinforces Leonardo's position as the UK's defence electronics champion and builds on our great partnership with Boeing to equip the Army's new AH-64E Apache helicopters with a UK sovereign DAS" said Alastair Morrison, Deputy Managing Director UK, Leonardo. "We're very proud that Wedgetail will join Typhoon, Shadow and the UK's helicopter fleet in being equipped with protective electronics from Leonardo."

Leonardo will deliver the system from its site in Luton, using its Modular Advanced Platform Protection System (MAPPS) architecture as the basis, with the MAPPS Controller at the heart. This is the latest iteration of Leonardo's Electronic Warfare Suite Controller (EWSC). The Royal Australian Air Force uses EWSC on its Wedgetail fleet.

As part of the selection, Thales UK, under a subcontract from Leonardo, will provide its Elix-IR Threat Warning System from its facility in Reading, and Vicon XF intelligent Countermeasures Dispensing System from its facilities at Bury St. Edmunds and Glasgow.

South Korea approves plans to acquire more AEW&C and SIGINT platforms

26 JUNE 2020 00:00 GMT+0

by Dae Young Kim

As part of efforts to enhance South Korea's intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance (ISTAR) capabilities the country's Defense Project Promotion Committee approved on 26 June plans to acquire an undisclosed number of additional airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft and signals intelligence (SIGINT) platforms.

In a statement issued that same day, the country's Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) said that the Republic of Korea Air Force (RoKAF) is aiming to acquire foreign-made AEW&C aircraft by 2027 under a project budgeted at KRW1.59 trillion (USD1.32 billion) that is set to start next year.

Although, not mentioned in the DAPA statement, it is believed that the service is seeking to acquire two more Boeing E-737 AEW&C platforms to add to the four it has fielded since 2011/2012 under its Peace Eye programme.

DAPA said the planned procurement is meant to "minimise potential surveillance gaps amid growing security threats by neighbouring countries", particularly as foreign military aircraft continue to enter South Korea's Air Defence Identification Zone without notice.

As for the additional SIGINT aircraft, the agency said KRW870 billion have been earmarked for the procurement project, which is set to begin next year and be completed by 2026. No details were provided about the model or number of platforms set to be acquired but the move will be part of the RoKAF's Paekdu (also known as Baekdu) programme.

The RoKAF already operates six SIGINT platforms acquired under the programme: two modified Falcon 2000S jets and four Hawker 800 Peace Krypton aircraft.

Details emerge on Australian Wedgetail replacement

15 JULY 2020

by Charles Forrester

The Australian Department of Defence (DoD) has confirmed some of the broad outlines of the replacement of the Royal Australian Air Force's (RAAF's) Boeing E-7A Wedgetail airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft.

A DoD spokesperson told Janes that the Wedgetail Replacement project, designated AIR7002 Phase 1, will commence in 2029. At that point the programme "is designed to begin scoping and risk reduction studies, informing potential platform replacement and technology options for the E-7A [Wedgetail]. The replacement of the [E-7A] Wedgetail fleet will begin in the second half of the 2030s."

The DoD is currently progressing a capability upgrade for its existing fleet of E-7A Wedgetail aircraft under the AUD2.3–3.5 billion (USD1.6–2.4 billion) project AIR5077 Phase 6 for approval by the government. According to the spokesperson, once the government approves AIR5077 Phase 6 work can begin to define AIR7002 Phase 1 capability life-cycle milestones such as initial operating capability and full operating capability. Following the completion of the AIR5077 Phase 6, which is anticipated for 2028, details for the E-7A project are expected to be released to the defence industry.

The result of these scoping studies in the future will help to understand the extent of the Australian Defence Force's airborne command-and-control (C2) requirements, which will help "to determine the best way to deliver these effects," in addition to the number of aircraft. The 2020 Force Structure Plan also recognised the need for an increase in the RAAF's AEW&C fleet from the current six aircraft.

Hun AEW&C capaciteit is redelijk jong.

Saab prepares GlobalEye bid for South Korea

05 AUGUST 2020

by Jon Grevatt

Saab has reaffirmed its intention to offer its GlobalEye platform for South Korea's recently announced programme to acquire additional airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft for the Republic of Korea Air Force (RoKAF).

Saab told Janes that it expects the procurement to feature an initial two aircraft acquired through either an open tender or a direct acquisition. South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) is expected to confirm the procurement method later this year.

A Saab spokesperson said that the company's offer will also include "both technology and collaboration projects" that match South Korea's future aerospace requirements and involve "multiple stakeholders from the military, government, industry, and other partners".

While detail on these projects will be expanded as the programme enters future phases, the spokesperson said Saab has already developed "clear principles and ideas for collaboration" as well as highlighted its own capabilities to local stakeholders, and "gathered information on Korean industry".

The spokesperson said, "Korea is a country with a highly skilled and developed industry opening several interesting areas for co-operation which we hope to explore further in the coming stages of the programme."

Although not confirmed by the company, this is likely to draw on Saab's existing industry ties in the country, which include strong links with LIG Nex1, one of South Korea's leading military electronics and missile manufacturers.

Saab and LIG Nex1 have previously collaborated on supplying the Swedish group's Arthur Weapon Locating System to the Republic of Korea Armed Forces and on developing radar technologies.

Hawkeye to get HUD

16 SEPTEMBER 2020

by Gareth Jennings

The Northrop Grumman E-2 Hawkeye airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft is to be equipped with a head-up display (HUD) for the first time in its near-60-year service life.

The carrier-borne AEW&C platform, which is currently the only US Navy (USN) aircraft not to be fitted with a HUD, will undergo the upgrade via the service's Hawkeye Cockpit Technical Refresh (HECTR) programme.

"For decades, we have improved the weapon system of the [E-2D] Advanced Hawkeye, but the cockpit has remained largely unchanged [from the earlier E-2C variant]," Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) said. "HECTR solves some of our obsolescence issues and brings new navigation and communication capability. With the aerial refuelling-capable variant of the E-2D as our new baseline, HECTR makes it safer for our crews who must land on the aircraft carrier after many hours of being on station. HECTR is an essential upgrade that brings the E-2D Hawkeye Cockpit into the 21st Century."

Announced on 14 September, the USD34 million requirements phase for the engineering, manufacturing, and development (EMD) part of the HECTR upgrade contract was awarded to Northrop Grumman on 3 August.

"The HECTR is a critical redesign of hardware and software components of the current E-2D Integration Navigation, Controls, and Displays System (INCDS) as well as an integration of the cockpit solution into the weapon system. HECTR will use an E-2D Mission Computer Alternative, currently under development at PMA-209 [Air Combat Electronics Program Office], as part of its design. The cockpit redesign will allow the platform to achieve Communication Navigation Surveillance/Air Traffic Management Required Navigation Performance Area Navigation capability," NAVAIR said.

UK begins Wedgetail conversions

04 NOVEMBER 2020

by Gareth Jennings

Work has begun in the UK to convert five Boeing 737 airliners into E-7 Wedgetail airborne early warning Mk 1 (AEW1) platforms for the Royal Air Force (RAF).

Boeing UK announced on 2 November that the first fuselage sections for the first two aircraft to be modified had been delivered to STS Aviation Services in Birmingham.

"Section 46 is the part of the fuselage where the aircraft's [Northrop Grumman] multirole electronically scanned array (MESA) radar will be installed," Boeing UK said, adding that the first Section 46 will begin preparation for inclusion into a 737 Next Generation [NG] airliner later this month.

"The arrival of the first fuselage sections at STS Aviation in Birmingham is a significant milestone for the E-7 Wedgetail Programme, and an exciting opportunity for the UK as we begin the modification of these aircraft into a world-class airborne command and control capability," Air Commodore Richard Barrow, Ministry of Defence (MoD) Senior Responsible Owner for the E-7 Wedgetail Programme was quoted as saying.

As noted by Boeing UK, parts and tooling will continue to arrive weekly to the Birmingham hangar in preparation for work on the first two aircraft in January 2021. "Staffing is ramping up, with 60 hired by STS Aviation already and more than half of the Boeing staff are on site now. The programme also successfully completed two critical reviews with the MoD last week," the company said.

RAF surveillance fleet to be based in Moray

18 Dec 2020

RAF Lossiemouth will be the new home of the UK's fleet of Wedgetail AEW Mk1 surveillance aircraft, bolstering Scotland's key role in UK and NATO defence and security, Defence Minister Baroness Goldie announced today.

Delivering a step change in capability from the current E-3D Sentry, the Wedgetail is capable of simultaneously tracking multiple airborne and maritime targets, using the information it gathers to improve situational awareness and direct assets such as fighter jets and warships. The Wedgetail has previously been used by the Royal Australian Air Force on operations against Daesh in Iraq and Syria.

The Wedgetail will be co-located with the new Poseidon fleet, with the first four submarine-hunting aircraft already providing essential operational support in the area.

Operating both fleets of Boeing 737 type aircraft from the same location will further harness RAF Lossiemouth's strategic location and take advantage of the new £100m state-of-the-art facility and the recent £75m runway upgrade. The decision is also expected to support hundreds of jobs and provide a boost to the local economy.

"Scotland's proximity to the waters and skies of the North Atlantic is of crucial importance to the UK's and NATO's security – this is why important military bases such as HMNB Clyde and RAF Lossiemouth are located here.

Defence's latest decision to base the E-7 Wedgetail at RAF Lossiemouth demonstrates our commitment to investing in Scotland, and will complement and expand upon the success of Typhoon fast jet and submarine hunting Poseidon operations."

Minister of State for Defence, Baroness Goldie

The arrival of the Wedgetail in 2023 will also mark a return to RAF Lossiemouth for 8 Squadron, after an absence of 30 years.

RAF Lossiemouth is already home to half of the UK's operational Typhoon fast jet fleet, which conduct Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) to protect the UK's airspace, and complete NATO air policing duties on behalf of our allies.

"The UK Government has invested £470m in RAF Lossiemouth over the past two years, including a new £100-million strategic facility for the UK's new fleet of nine submarine-hunting Poseidon P-8A maritime patrol aircraft, built by Elgin-based Robertson. Indeed this firm is also building the new shipbuilding hall for the Type 31 Frigate programme at Rosyth in Fife demonstrating just one of the many ways that UK Defence benefits Scottish business."

"The arrival of the Wedgetail capability in Scotland will provide clear additional security and economic benefits to Scotland."

Scottish Secretary Alister Jack

The Poseidon programme brought £470m UK Government investment in the coastal RAF base, creating and sustaining jobs and boosting the local economy. It is anticipated that basing the Wedgetail fleet will bring further investment and civilian and military jobs to Moray.

UAE orders additional GlobalEye AEW&C aircraft

04 JANUARY 2021

by Gareth Jennings

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has signed for two more Saab GlobalEye airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft, bringing the Gulf state's total order to five.

The Swedish manufacturer announced on 4 January that it had received a follow-on contract valued at USD1.018 billion, running from 2020 (the order was placed on 31 December 2020) to 2025. This award adds to the original Swing Role Surveillance System contract for three of the Bombardier Global 6000 business jet-based aircraft signed in 2015.

News of the follow-on order came three months after Saab delivered to the UAE Air Force and Defence (AF&D) the second of the initial three platforms in late September 2020, with the first having been handed over in late April 2020. The third and final contracted aircraft is due to arrive in the UAE before the end of 2021.

As previously described to Janes , the GlobalEye platform is built around the Saab Erieye Extended Range (ER) S-band (2–4 GHz) radar that is housed in the same external dorsal 'plank' as the company's original Erieye system. Equipped with gallium nitride (GaN) and other technologies, the Erieye ER is an active electronically scanned array (AESA) system that doubles the radar's power efficiency compared with previous Erieye iterations. It has a range in excess of 650 km that, as with all AESA radars, can be dramatically extended by focusing the radar's energy in a particular direction. Saab has said the Erieye ER is resistant to jamming and features all-weather functionality in all domains (air, sea, and land surveillance), as well as an "extremely high" tracking update rate against targets of interest.

NAVAL AIR SYSTEMS COMMAND, PATUXENT RIVER, Md. -- France became the second international customer of the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye (AHE), Dec. 2, with a signed Letter of Offer and Acceptance to procure three E-2D aircraft from the U.S. Navy, for a maximum value of $2 billion.

"The E-2/C-2 program office is looking forward to continuing a longstanding partnership with France and beginning a new chapter with the E-2D," said Capt. Pete Arrobio, program manager of the E-2/C-2 Airborne Command & Control Systems Program Office (PMA-231). "This procurement will increase interoperability among the U.S. Fleet and international partners."

The three E-2Ds are scheduled to be delivered by 2028 and will replace the three existing E-2C Hawkeyes of the French Navy, Marine Nationale.

The E-2D AHE, produced by Northrop Grumman, represents a two-generation leap in technology compared to its predecessor, the E-2C Hawkeye. The aircraft features a state-of-the-art radar and upgraded aircraft systems that improve supportability and increase readiness. The centerpiece of the E-2D AHE is the APY-9 radar system, designed specifically to provide enhanced surveillance detection and tracking capability against advanced threat aircraft and cruise missile systems in the overland, littoral, and open ocean environments. With the addition of aerial refueling capabilities, the E-2D remains the most advanced command and control platform in the world.

The French Navy becomes the second international customer of the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye. The Japan Air Self Defense Force has purchased 13 E-2D aircraft to date.

PMA-231 is responsible for providing the E-2C Hawkeye, E-2D Advanced Hawkeye, and the C-2A Greyhound fleet with acquisition strategy, logistics and sustainment solutions.

Sweden commits to future GlobalEye buy

16 FEBRUARY 2021

by Gareth Jennings

Sweden will procure the Saab GlobalEye airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) platform to replace its ageing Saab 340 Erieyes, the country's defence minister disclosed on 16 February.

For the first time, Sweden has committed itself to a future procurement of the Saab GlobalEye AEW&C platform. (Saab)

Speaking during a Saab media briefing on Finland's HX fighter replacement programme, Peter Hultqvist, committed the Swedish Air Force (SwAF) to the GlobalEye for the first time, while noting opportunities for Finland should the Finnish Air Force (FinAF) select the platform alongside the Gripen E.

"There has been no formal Swedish decision on GlobalEye procurement, but that should be taken as our intent," Hultqvist said. "GlobalEye is a very interesting alternative, and a Swedish product. In a formal way, we are not there yet."

The minister's comments came some four weeks after he laid out his government's defence plans as part of a wider increase in national defence spending by more than 40% between 2021–25. In January, Hultqvist highlighted SwAF plans to replace its two Saab 340 Erieye platforms that have been in service since 2004. At that time, no details for a possible replacement were disclosed, though it was considered highly likely that it would be based on the GlobalEye that features the latest Erieye Extended Range radar technology.

NAVY'S NEW 'EYES IN THE SKY' ENTER SERVICE READY FOR CARRIER MISSION

24 March 2021

The first of the Royal Navy's new 'eyes in the sky' has entered service – getting ready to protect the nation's flagship.

The first Merlin 'Crowsnest' helicopter – which scours the heavens with its radar looking for potential foes – will now begin operational training, ahead of the maiden deployment of HMS Queen Elizabeth this spring.

The distinctive-looking helicopter – a large radar dome or 'bag' sticks out from the fuselage, earning the aircraft the affectionate nickname of 'baggers' – will provide airborne surveillance and the control of other aircraft (known as ASaC) in the carrier's strike group.

The new generation of 'baggers' pick up the mantle of the Navy's veteran Sea Kings of 849 Naval Air Squadron (now retired) – and like their predecessors will be based at Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose, which also provides anti-submarine Merlin aircraft to protect the Fleet.

Training by aircrews to use the new system, which allows crews to conduct air and missile defence as well as strike command and control, has been underway since the autumn.

Captain Stuart Finn, the Commanding Officer of RNAS Culdrose said: "The delivery of this first aircraft at Culdrose represents an enormous amount of hard work, dedication and passion across the defence and industry enterprise. It marks a significant moment for the Royal Navy as we become a carrier task group navy capable of deploying around the world as a sovereign group or with our allies.

"It is especially poignant that these aircraft are based here at Culdrose, the home of 'the eyes of the fleet', and we are proud of our association with airborne surveillance and control and before that, airborne early warning.

"These aircraft will work side by side with the rest of the Merlin Mk2 force to provide a world-class line of defence for our global navy, adding above water expertise to our already renowned submarine hunting skills."

The Merlins have been kitted out with new mission systems and radars from Thales Group by aerospace company Leonardo in Yeovil, overseen by Lockheed Martin.

Each helicopter has a crew of three: two observers (mission and tactical specialists) and one pilot. High above the fleet with their sophisticated sensors, they enable the carrier strike group commander to see, understand and react well beyond the horizon for any air or surface threats. They can also act as a control centre for strike operations between the carrier and the ship's F-35 Lightning jets.

Commodore Steve Moorhouse, Commander UK Carrier Strike Group, who will direct HMS Queen Elizabeth's first deployment with the help of his staff, said the new Merlins were the final pieces in the group's large, complex jigsaw.

"It's hugely encouraging to see the progress of the Crowsnest trials. Already one the most advanced submarine hunters, the Merlin Crowsnest will offer long-range intelligence and surveillance against surface and airborne threats, and the ability to command and control strike missions," he said.

"Coupled with the Wildcat attack helicopter, the UK Carrier Strike Group will soon operate one of the most capable and versatile helicopter air groups."

Commander Ian Varley, the Commanding Officer of 820 Naval Air Squadron, which is dedicated to protecting the carriers, their escorts and support ships, said his air and ground crew had been working tirelessly to prepare for the carrier mission; almost his entire squadron will be deploying with HMS Queen Elizabeth.

"The addition of the ASaC helicopters alongside our anti-submarine aircraft is a huge boost in our capabilities," he added.

"I know the men and women on the squadron are looking forward to working alongside the rest of the fleet to continue the Royal Navy's long tradition of air power at and from the sea."

HMS Queen Elizabeth is due to deploy to the Mediterranean, Indian Ocean and into the Indo-Pacific region in an operational deployment with the UK's allies and partners.

KAI to support Boeing in upgrading RoKAF's E-737 AEW&C aircraft

02 AUGUST 2021

by Alessandra Giovanzanti

Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) signed a KRW18 billion (USD15.6 million) contract with Boeing on 28 July to support the US company in upgrading the Republic of Korea Air Force's (RoKAF's) four Boeing E-737 airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft with new mission systems.

The contract, which was announced by KAI on 30 July, formalises the company's participation in the RoKAF's 'E-737 AEW&C Performance Improvement Project', which is led by Boeing and includes upgrades to both the identification friend-or-foe (IFF) and Link 16 tactical datalink systems on the aircraft.

KAI announced on 30 July that it had secured a KRW18 billion contract to support Boeing in upgrading the RoKAF's four E-737 AEW&C aircraft. (KAI)

Through this initial contract KAI is expected to win future orders for this project and participate in activities such as aircraft modification, function check, and flight test support, according to a 30 July report by South Korea's Yonhap News Agency.

KAI pointed out that its partnership with Boeing builds upon the experience matured during the 'Peace Eye' acquisition programme in 2006 when KAI oversaw the assembly and installation of the Northrop Grumman multifunction electronic phased-array (MESA) radar and electronic equipment onto the E-737s ahead of final handover of the aircraft to the RoKAF.

Since 2011–12, the RoKAF has fielded four E-737s under its 'Peace Eye' programme.

As reported by Janes , the E-737 performance improvement project was approved on 29 October 2020 by South Korea's Defense Project Promotion Committee. At the time, the country's Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) said that KRW490 billion had been earmarked for the project, which is set to be completed by June 2025.

The project is mainly aimed at enhancing interoperability during combined operations between South Korean and US forces.

Chile buys three Boeing E-3D Sentry aircraft from UK

19 JANUARY 2022

by Santiago Rivas

The Chilean Air Force (FACh) has purchased three Boeing E-3D Sentry airborne early warning Mk 1 (AEW1) aircraft from the UK Royal Air Force (RAF) for an undisclosed amount, FACh sources told Janes .

The aircraft, one of which will be used for spare parts, will replace the FACh's single Boeing 707-385C that was modified in Israel for AEW missions, called IAI Phalcon in Israel and Cóndor in Chile.

The RAF retired the last of its E-3D in 2021, when the FACh started negotiations to buy three. A source told Janes that crews and technicians were sent to the UK in late 2021 to inspect the aircraft and create training courses on their operation. The E-3Ds could fly to Chile this year, the source added.

The 707 Cóndor is near the end of its operational life. Built in 1965 it served as Boeing's demonstrator and testbed before being sold in 1969 to LAN Chile airline and then to the FACh in 1990.

The E-3Ds selected by the FACh are registered ZH 101 (c/n 24109/993), ZH 103 (c/n 24111/1004), and ZH 106 (c/n 24114/1011), the source told Janes .

Saab GlobalEye could be jointly operated by Scandinavian countries

Saab has revealed ongoing discussion in expanding collaboration among Scandinavian nations, highlighting the aspiration for Sweden, Finland and Denmark to share common GlobalEye AEW&C platforms.

Finland, Sweden and Denmark have been engaging in discussions with Saab to potentially jointly operate the company's GlobalEye Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft, a Saab official told Shephard at the Dubai Airshow 2023.

Sweden has ordered two GlobalEyes under a US$710 million deal. Deliveries have been slated for 2027 and the contract included a potential extension for two more aircraft.

'It comes down to the Swedish Defence Force to make that choice [about the extension], but we are having discussions with the neighbouring countries in Scandinavian – Finland and Denmark –, to see whether scaling up from two or more aircraft in the region could be part of the equation in the region,' said Tomas Lundin, head of marketing and sales of AEW&C business at Saab.

When asked whether the countries involved could jointly use the same platforms, Lundin commented 'Why not? That's a good idea'. He emphasised, however, that the collaboration between the Scandinavian neighbours was only 'aspirational' at this point.

Although Scandinavian countries have been known for their close collaboration on dispersed air operations conducted with fighter jets, the concept of multiple nations owning a shared defence platform does not seem to have a clear precedent.

Lundin could not confirm when a decision could be expected regarding the potential collaboration, but he said Saab believed GlobalEye would 'be an important asset' for countries in the region and 'they are showing a great deal of interest in the capability'.

E-7A Wedgetails gaan E-3A Sentries vervangen

Saab signs GlobalEye AEW&C aircraft support contract with UAE

Saab and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ministry of Defence have signed a contract and Saab has received an order regarding in-service support for the GlobalEye Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) solution. The order value is approximately USD 190 million with a three-year contract period that runs until 2026. The contract includes maintenance and logistics support, as well as training services.

"This agreement solidifies Saab's role in ensuring that GlobalEye remains mission-ready. We look forward to further strengthening our partnership with the UAE Air Force and Air Defence and providing long-term local support," says Carl-Johan Bergholm, head of Saab's business area Surveillance.

On January 4, 2024, Saab announced it had received a follow-on contract with the UAE regarding the sale of two GlobalEyes, whose order value is USD 1.018 billion and the contract period is 2020-2025. The original contract with the United Arab Emirates for GlobalEye was signed in 2015. This contract was an amendment to that signed in 2015.

GlobalEye is an advanced multi-domain AEW&C solution that provides simultaneous air, maritime and ground surveillance. It combines sophisticated radar technology with the ultra-long-range Global 6000 aircraft from Bombardier. By providing real-time information to units in air forces, armies and navies, GlobalEye enables enhanced situational awareness of the surrounding areas and early detection of threats.
