KMW, Nexter and Rheinmetall get the go-ahead for initial MGCS architecture study

20 May 2020

Standing for Main Ground Combat System, MGCS is a joint Franco-German defence project. The programme, to be implemented under German political leadership, is tasked with developing a main combat system to succeed the Bundeswehr's Leopard 2 and the French Army's Leclerc starting in 2035.

Making the start of the MGCS procurement programme Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW), Nexter Systems and Rheinmetall AG established an ARGE in December 2019. Now, the partners and the German Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw), acting in the name of Germany and France, have signed a contract for the "System Architecture Definition Study - Part 1" (SADS Part 1). This contract sounds the industrial starting gun for a MGCS Demonstration Phase.

At the Franco-German Ministerial Council meeting in Toulouse on 16 October 2019, the defence ministers of both nations, Florence Parly and Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, emphasized their commitment to developing the MGCS.

The ARGE is a German acronym standing for Arbeitsgemeinschaft, or "working group". Under German law, the ARGE serves as the contractual partner of the procurement authority (BAAINBw) during the first phase of the programme. Officials of the three companies represent the ARGE vis-à-vis third parties.

The aim of the study is to harmonize the final MGCS concepts of the previous phase, to analyse further details, and to propose a common multi-platform architecture. The three contractual partners will assess various aspects of different concepts: technical feasibility in the projected timeframe allotted for the programme; ability to fulfil the operational needs of both armies; efficiency and compatibility with national "systems of systems" (SCORPION for France and Digitization of Land-Based Operations (D-LBO) for Germany). Workshares in the SADS Part 1 are to be distributed equally between France and Germany on a fifty-fifty basis. The first phase of architecture work is expected to last 18 months.

Germany and France sign MGCS framework agreement

German defence minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer and her French counterpart, Florence Parly, have signed a framework agreement on the Franco-German Main Ground Combat System (MGCS), Germany's Federal Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced on its website on 28 April, describing this as "an important signal for European defence co-operation". The system will replace German Leopard 2 and French Leclerc main battle tanks (MBTs) starting in the mid-2030s.

The ministry said that the framework agreement established the MGCS project organisation and management structure. The objective is for both countries to benefit equally from their co-operation, and therefore they will each provide 50% funding.

MGCS – Studien für die Nachfolge der derzeitigen Kampfpanzergeneration

Deze concept art van Nexter is wel belachelijk slecht, het lijkt wel een kleuter tekening van een tank.

Rheinmetall advances Next Generation 130 mm tank gun

Rheinmetall Weapons and Ammunition "has completed developmental efforts" of an initial new Next Generation (NG) 130 mm smooth bore tank gun, but some further design changes are expected, company officials told Jane's.

The first NG 130 mm smooth bore gun, unveiled at Eurosatory 2016 in Paris, is regarded as a technical demonstrator (TD) and Rheinmetall said it plans to offer this as the potential armament for the US Army Next Generation Combat Vehicle (NGCV).

A Rheinmetall representative, who requested anonymity, said the weapon is an L51 cannon and uses new high-strength steel, is chrome plated with a vertical sliding breech mechanism, electrical firing mechanism, and an increased chamber volume so more propellant can be used to enable higher muzzle velocities and therefore greater armour penetration characteristics. It is fitted with a thermal sleeve and muzzle reference system, according to the representative.

Rheinmetall said the 6.63 m barrel weighs 3,000 kg, including the recoil system, but without the mounting components. The company representative confirmed that, by November 2019, about 80 rounds had been fired at its proving ground.

The representative said the chamber of the first NG 130 mm has a volume of 15 litres and a design pressure of 880 MPa, but added that "due to the experiences and knowledge gained in the live firing trials, this data will be modified in the next stage of development." One NG 130 mm gun has been built by Rheinmetall using internal research and development funding, and a second weapon is now being built that will incorporate a number of modifications.

The first 130 mm round developed by Rheinmetall is an armour-piercing fin-stabilised discarding sabot - tracer (APFSDS-T) with a semi-combustible cartridge case, new high-energy propellant that is insensitive munition (IM) compliant, and a new advanced long rod tungsten penetrator for greater penetration characteristics.

Can Russia defeat NATO with Soviet era armour?

Samuel Cranny-Evans, Editor, Jane's Armoured Fighting Vehicles provides exclusive analysis of Russia's ambitious modernisation of its armed forces, and NATO's response to re arm and return its attention to the potential for a conventional conflict on a scale thought improbable, since the end of the Cold War.

'attack on trade roots'  :) sounds funny but might be true.

Ze zijn wel aardig met eigen concepten bezig daar.

Had overduidelijk routes moeten zijn.

Ziet er naar uit dat Rheinmetall niet gaat wachten op de Frans-Duitse combinatie met concepten maken.
