DEFEA 2023: Israeli Elbit Systems PULS rocket & missile launcher attracts European armed forces

At the DEFEA 2023 defense exhibition in Athens, Greece, Israeli company Elbit Systems showcased the PULS, a new generation multi-caliber rocket and missile launcher system. Recently, the armed forces of Denmark and the Netherlands have opted for this cutting-edge technology.

On March 2, 2023, the Danish government announced the acquisition of two batteries of PULS artillery rocket launcher systems from Elbit Systems, including a package of rockets and missiles. On April 3, 2023, the Dutch Ministry of Defense followed suit, announcing the purchase of an undisclosed number of PULS MLRSs (Multiple Launch Rocket Systems).

The adoption of the Israeli-made PULS by these two NATO members indicates a potential shift in the standard for rocket launcher systems, potentially outperforming American counterparts like HIMARS and M270 MLRS.

Elbit Systems' Land rocket artillery solutions are tailored to modern artillery requirements and battlefield scenarios, offering a cost-effective solution for the precise firing of advanced rockets. Their autonomous advanced firing systems streamline mission management and ensure consistent and efficient fire support in all weather conditions. The flexible platforms are also compatible with local or third-party products and C4I systems.

The PULS autonomous artillery rocket system delivers a comprehensive and cost-effective solution for the precise firing of various advanced rocket types, boasting optimal responsiveness. Unlike traditional artillery, the PULS system can fire different ammunition types to various ranges from the same position, reaching distances of up to 300km.

The multi-purpose launcher has two PODS, each designed for a specific rocket type: the Accular 122mm (18 rockets) with a range of up to 35km, the Accular 160mm (10 rockets) with a range of up to 40km, the EXTR (4 rockets) with a range of up to 150km, and the Predator Hawk (2 rockets) with a range of up to 300km. PULS is capable of accurately and effectively neutralizing targets at all ranges, providing maximum responsiveness and firing flexibility without requiring special modifications.

A typical firing mission with PULS can be executed in under a minute. The system is fully adaptable to existing platforms, significantly reducing maintenance and training costs associated with introducing new vehicle platforms. The launcher was specifically designed to bridge the gaps between all artillery components: means of fire, sensors, and C4I.

BAE Systems successfully tests guided projectile

In partnership with the U.S. Army, BAE Systems successfully fired a Sub-Caliber Artillery Long-Range Projectile with Enhanced Lethality, our concept for the U.S. Army?s XM1155 sub-caliber program, from a 155 mm XM907E2 58 caliber cannon and impacted a fixed target beyond ranges previously demonstrated by other precision guided projectiles fired from the same type of cannon.

The test at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, used a U.S. Army-designed sabot package and confirmed the projectile?s compatibility with the 155 mm Extended Range Cannon Artillery (ERCA) Howitzer Test Bed and propelling charges.

?This successful test confirms our Sub-Caliber Artillery Long-Range Projectile with Enhanced Lethality can defeat long-range targets and advance to follow-on testing out to double the range of existing guided projectile and with sensors to find fixed and moving targets of interest,? said Brent Butcher, vice president and general manager of Weapon Systems at BAE Systems. ?We are confident that the projectile is on track to provide the Army the best munitions solution for cannon artillery with a leap ahead capability that will bring a highly lethal, maneuverable projectile to soldiers on the battlefield.?

Our concept for the U.S. Army?s XM1155-SC program is an advanced, cannon-launched projectile under development for the defeat of fixed and moving targets in contested environments at more than double the range of existing cannon launched precision guided munitions (PGM). The latest PGM in the Hypervelocity Projectile family of munitions, our concept was developed to penetrate and destroy adversary defenses through increased range, advanced guidance, lethality, and survivability. The projectile addresses the Army?s modernization goals for a long-range precision fires munitions solution.

For the past several years, BAE Systems has invested in the innovation, development and testing of advanced long-range precision fires solutions and has completed more than 100 PGM tests. In early 2022, the predecessor to our XM1155-SC concept, BAE Systems? Extended Range Hypervelocity Projectile (HVP-ER) successfully destroyed a target at a range of more than 110 kilometers.

BAE Systems is currently under contract with the U.S. Army to develop and test the projectile as part of the Army?s XM1155 Extended Range Artillery Projectile program.

https://esut.de/2023/03/meldungen/41081/nur-zehn-panzerhaubitzen-2000-werden-nachbeschafft/

US Army selects Lockheed Martin Northrop Grumman and Raytheon to develop LRMF Long Range Maneuverable Fires Missile

The U.S. Army?s Aviation and Missile Center has selected Lockheed Martin to develop an advanced propulsion Long Range Maneuverable Fires (LRMF) missile. The missile can be fired from existing Army launchers to defeat distant threats at ranges that significantly exceed those of the PrSM baseline.

?Lockheed Martin is partnering with the U.S. Army to give soldiers a decisive edge on the battlefield by extending their reach,? said Steven Botwinik, vice president of Advanced Programs Execution and Transition at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control. ?With half a century of expertise integrating advanced propulsion systems and supporting the Army?s precision fires ecosystem, we are ready to develop a solution that significantly extends PrSM?s range.?

Phase 1 focuses on design and risk-reduction activities, with optional follow-on phases leading to flight test demonstration. Following flight tests, LRMF will transition to the U.S. Army?s Strategic and Operational Rockets and Missiles (STORM) project office to inform the design of an extended-range Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) Increment (Inc.) 4.

To reach a significantly extended range with launcher volume constraints, Lockheed Martin?s solution will employ unique design elements and key technologies to address size and endurance challenges.

Let us remind that the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) is a surface-to-surface missile currently under development by the United States Army. It is intended to replace the aging Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) and provide the Army with a longer-range and more precise missile capability.

Technical data and specifications of the PrSM missile

* Range: over 499 km (310 miles)
* Warhead: The missile is designed to carry a variety of warheads, including a high-explosive, fragmentation, and thermobaric warhead.
* Guidance system: The missile uses an inertial navigation system with GPS and an anti-jamming capability to guide it to the target. It can also receive in-flight updates from a ground station.
* Speed: The missile can travel at speeds up to Mach 5 (around 6,174 km/h or 3,836 mph).
* Dimensions: The missile is about 4.2 meters (14 feet) long and has a diameter of 61 cm (24 inches).
* Weight: The missile weighs around 1,200 kg (2,600 lbs).
* Propulsion: The missile uses a solid rocket motor for propulsion.

Raytheon Technologies and Northrop Grumman team down-selected for US Army?s Next-generation Precision Strike Missile

The U.S. Army selected Raytheon Technologies to advance its design for the Long Range Maneuverable Fires program, intended to become Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) Increment 4. Working collaboratively with Northrop Grumman, the team will mature its innovative design, featuring advanced propulsion technology as a key enabler for extending range, as well as enhancements for survivability and lethality.

During this phase of the program, Raytheon and Northrop Grumman will partner to co-design, build and test the propulsion subsystem for DeepStrike-ER, an advanced missile solution that will demonstrate the capability to achieve the Army?s desired range and effectiveness against next-generation threats.

?Our experience in developing the most sophisticated missile technologies in the world uniquely positions Raytheon to partner with the Army to address this high-priority modernization program,? said Tom Laliberty, president of land warfare & air defense, Raytheon. ?This legacy, coupled with our creative partnerships to bring together proven technologies, enables us to deliver a superior solution that meets or exceeds the requirements for the critical long-range precision fires mission.?

?Northrop Grumman?s ongoing investment in new propulsion technologies and infrastructure support the growing need for efficient and effective missile systems,? said Jim Kalberer, vice president of missile products at Northrop Grumman. ?Our mission-tailored solution will include advanced propulsion technology and key components designed to increase capacity within the launch system and achieve optimal range extension.?

Developed in collaboration with the Australian Defence Forces, this next-generation weapon is the U.S. Army?s future long-range precision strike missile, offering improved capabilities over the Army Tactical Missile System to engage a variety of threats with unparalleled range and accuracy. The missile, which is being procured and developed in four increments addressing specific operational requirements, is designed for integration into currently fielded Army platforms.
