GA-ASI tests Sonobuoy Dispensing System fitted to MQ-9B SeaGuardian

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc (GA-ASI), in co-operation with US Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR), has conducted a series of tests with its Sonobuoy Dispensing System (SDS) using the MQ-9B SeaGuardian unmanned aircraft vehicle (UAV), GA-ASI announced on 20 March 2024.

The tests, conducted on 27 February 2024 on the US Navy's W-291 test range in southern California, involved a GA-ASI SeaGuardian configured with the SDS pod and a SeaVue multi-role radar from Raytheon. The SeaGuardian was flown under a NAVAIR interim flight clearance.

During the tests the SDS pod dropped eight AN/SSQ-53 and two AN/SSQ-62 sonobuoys. Upon dispensing, the sonobuoys were successfully monitored by the SeaGuardian's onboard Sonobuoy Monitoring and Control System (SMCS).

"This was a very successful demonstration of our SDS capability," GA-ASI President David R Alexander was quoted as saying in a company press release. "The demonstration helped us prove out the SDS, which is an important component for our anti-submarine warfare capability."

The SDS pod is fitted with an advanced pneumatic ejection system developed, designed, and manufactured by AEREA in Italy. AEREA also supplies the internal structure assembly.

The MQ-9B SeaGuardian is a medium-altitude, long-endurance UAV. Its multi-domain capabilities allow it to flex from mission to mission. SeaGuardian has been used by the US military in several recent demonstrations, including the 'Northern Edge', 'Integrated Battle Problem' and 'Group Sail' exercises.

The MQ-9B is currently also being operated by the Japan Coast Guard and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.

Italy Sets Out Future MPA Capability Requirements And Timeframes

Italy is seeking a new, more capable maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) to deliver anti-submarine warfare (ASW) output to counter an increasing submarine threat in the Mediterranean Sea. The aim is to acquire this capability by the end of the decade.

Italy's maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) surveillance capability is currently provided by the Leonardo P-72A (pictured). However, particularly to add a long-range, wide-area anti-submarine warfare capability, Italy is looking to procure a new MPA.

Italy's MPA capability is generated jointly by the Italian Air Force (ITAF) and Italian Navy (ITN). Discussing how to meet Italy's future maritime surveillance and engagement capability requirements with a long-range multi-mission MPA, Brigadier General Francesco Agresti – an ITAF officer posted to the ITN's Office of the Marine Aviation Inspector (ISPAVIAMAR) – told SAE Media Group's Maritime Reconnaissance and Surveillance Technology conference in London in late January that a long-range, wide-area ASW capability is something "we urgently need to retrieve".

Italy's current multi-mission MPA – the Leonardo P-72A – does not carry an ASW capability, instead focusing broadly on maritime surveillance. Entering service in 2016 and 2017, four P-72As were purchased to provide a ten-year interim capability to bridge the gap from Italy's P1150 Dassault-Breguet Atlantic aircraft to a future MPA.

"We are pretty satisfied with P-72A. Indeed, we are trying to get out of it the maximum operational profit," said Brig Gen Agresti. However, he explained, the deteriorating Euro-Atlantic security situation means some aspects of the capability gap can no longer be endured.

Citaat"We are looking forward to acquiring a more capable platform. We think that – besides intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance – ASW capability is really necessary."
Brigadier General Francesco Agresti

Brig Gen Agresti underscored the need to close the gap quickly, stating that Italy is aiming to acquire a new MPA by 2029. He added that the procurement process is progressing.

While Italy has been working through the future MPA capability requirements process, including finding the right balance between ITAF and ITN needs, what has become time-urgent is the need to re-establish an MPA-based ASW capability to provide coverage across the Mediterranean, Brig Gen Agresti explained.

"We are witnessing a growing interest from several non-NATO Mediterranean countries, but also growing appetites from other world powers like Russia and sometimes China that are sending clear signs of their ambitions to strengthen their presence," said Brig Gen Agresti. "We are witnessing in recent decades a meaningful proliferation of non-NATO submarines."

"The ASW threat has been recognised as one of the main NATO shortfalls," he continued, adding that the ASW shortfall is acute in the Mediterranean.

Brig Gen Agresti noted that the Mediterranean Sea's blue-water and littoral regions remain areas of global political significance, with the region's key choke points, sea lines of communication, at-sea natural resources, and critical undersea infrastructure nodes – not to mention the prevailing instability on the Mediterranean's eastern and southern flanks – underscoring this significance.

"A distinguishing trait of the Mediterranean is also that it is a confined maritime environment ... therefore likely to be congested and, in case of crisis, contested and constrained," Brig Gen Agresti continued.

Thus, a long-range, multi-mission MPA able to generate enduring, wide-area surveillance and situational awareness will be critical to building a common, recognised maritime operating picture. "In such a complex geostrategic framework, a good awareness of maritime activity is surely a vital precondition for the protection of both national and international interests," said Brig Gen Agresti.

Future MPA requirements
As regards Future MPA requirements, Italy has noted developments across NATO that have focused on building collaborative programmes and on delivering more capable MPAs.

Brig Gen Agresti spelled out Italy's ASW, and broader maritime surveillance, capability requirements for its future MPA. These include: ASW and anti-surface warfare (ASuW), encompassing advanced engagement capabilities; multispectral intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance; robust and secure long-range communications, enhanced with 'net-capable' connectivity; high survivability in non-permissive environments, including capability to counter contemporary electronic and kinetic threats; high operational reach, including through speed, range, payload, endurance, and time on station; day/night and all-weather capabilities; and deployability with minimal logistics support.

Various MPAs are available on the market. In his presentation, Brig Gen Agresti listed three that he said are currently more likely to be considered. In alphabetical order, these are: Boeing's P-8A Poseidon; the Kawasaki P-1; and Leonardo's C27J ASW.

Indian Navy, Coast Guard To Get 15 Maritime Patrol Aircraft Based On Airbus C-295

India's Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) approved multiple acquisition proposals of the Indian Navy and Coast Guard, including new MPAs, sonars, torpedoes and support packages for MH-60R

Model render of C-295 based MRMR.

The Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard (ICG) have been granted Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) to purchase 15 maritime patrol aircraft for about $3.5 billion. The Navy will purchase nine Medium Range Maritime Reconnaissance (MRMR) aircraft while the ICG will purchase six Multi-Mission Maritime Aircraft (MMMA). These aircraft will be based on the Airbus C-295 transport, 56 of which had been earlier ordered by the Air Force. 40 of the 56 aircraft are to be made in India by Tata Advanced Systems. The bulk of the 15 MPAs will also be made in India, once the order is placed.

The Navy's MRMR aircraft will be used for maritime surveillance, anti-submarine warfare, maritime domain awareness, ELINT, COMINT and special operations, among others. The ICG MMMA will perform maritime surveillance and interdiction, pollution surveillance and search and rescue missions. Both MRMR and MMMA will feature multiple mission systems developed by DRDO, including an AESA maritime patrol radar, IFF system, EO/IR system, pollution surveillance suite, datalinks and armament.

Scaled model of ICG MMMA by DRDO at Aero India 2023

The MRMR will have an endurance of about 4.5 hours at ranges of 400 nm and can operate at an altitude of 30,000 feet. These aircraft will enable the Navy to complement the long legged P-8I MPA fleet as well as the short range Do-228 aircraft. Given the high indigenous content and cost effectiveness of the MRMR as well as proposed acquisition of 15 SeaGuardian MALE UAVs and other uncrewed assets, it remains to be seen if Boeing's efforts to market six additional P-8I MPAs for about $2.5 billion bears fruit.

The DAC has also granted AoN for procurement of Active Towed Array Sonars having capabilities to operate at low frequencies and various depths for long range detection of submarines. Multiple frontline Indian warships such as the Kamorta class ASW corvettes are expected to be equipped with these sonars, which will fill a critical capability gap. Vessels under construction such as the 16 Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC) also require such sonars.

AoN for procurement of Heavyweight Torpedoes for enhancing the offensive capabilities of Kalvari class submarines was also granted. Six of these Scorpene submarines have been built with the Navy expected to order three more submarines, which will be made by Mazagon Docks. A total of 48 torpedoes will be procured through a global tender and will partially fulfil the Navy's net requirement until DRDO's Electrical Heavyweight Torpedo completes trials.

A Navy proposal for support packages for MH-60 Romeo helicopters under Foreign Military Sale route with the US Government has also been approved. India had placed an order for 24 MH-60Rs in February 2020 for an estimated cost of $2.6 billion. The ICG will procure Software Defined Radios which will help establish high-speed communication with secure networking capability between the ICG and the Indian Navy units.

These proposals were among multiple deals worth over $10 billion that were approved by the DAC on February 16 for the Navy, ICG, Air Force and Army.

https://defence-network.com/wechsel-von-der-p-3c-orion-zur-p-8a-poseidon/

Duitsland was blind.

Spain orders 16 Airbus C295 in Maritime Patrol and Surveillance configurations

The Spanish Ministry of Defence has ordered 16 Airbus C295 aircraft in Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) configuration and Maritime Surveillance Aircraft (MSA) configuration. The contract amounts to €1.695 billion.

These new aircraft will enable the Spanish Air and Space Force and the Spanish Navy to strengthen the national anti-submarine warfare capability as well as increase and enhance its surveillance, reconnaissance and search & rescue units.

"The aircraft will be fully designed and manufactured in Spain, fostering the national industrial defence footprint and sovereignty" said Mike Schoellhorn, CEO of Airbus Defence and Space. "In particular, the Maritime Patrol version is the most complex C295 mission configuration to date. A major development project that will bring together the latest technologies to provide an operational advantage to our customer."

The contract also includes training systems (Full Flight Simulator and Mission System Simulator) and an initial logistics support package.

The C295 MPA will conduct the missions performed by the P-3 Orion fleet, which were retired at the end of 2022. It will be equipped to carry out anti-submarine, anti-surface warfare and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions. Likewise, it will be able to carry armaments such as torpedoes and other types of weapon systems.

The MPA configuration will be highly connected and will be able to operate in a collaborative mode with other platforms in different domains. The aircraft can become a flying command-and-control centre, providing the Spanish Armed Forces with the versatility to carry out a wide range of missions.

The C295 MSA is the natural replacement for the CN-235 VIGMA aircraft fleet, which have been in service with the Spanish Air and Space Force since 2008. It will be primarily equipped for maritime and overland operations such as anti-smuggling, anti-illegal immigration and anti-drug trafficking operations, as well as national and international search-and-rescue missions.

There will be a high degree of synergy between both configurations. The Spanish Air and Space Force also operates a fleet of 13 Airbus C295 in transport configuration.

The aircraft will be assembled at Airbus' military facilities in Seville.
