Inauguration of Griffon armored vehicles assembly plant in Belgium

On April 23, 2024, Belgium inaugurated a Griffon armored vehicles assembly plant, marking a significant step in the partnership between Belgium and France in the SCORPION/CaMo program. Established in 2018, this partnership aims to enhance the motorized capacity of the Belgian army by acquiring 382 of these modern armored vehicles.

On the industrial front, KNDS France selected the MOL Group to assemble the Griffons ordered by Belgium, a decision made in April 2022. This collaboration led to the inauguration of a new assembly plant in Staden, Belgium, on April 23.

The 382 Griffons will be delivered to the Belgian army between 2025 and 2031, with turrets developed by FN Herstal. Luxembourg also plans to join this Franco-Belgian cooperation, with discussions underway for the creation of a medium combat reconnaissance battalion.

On Friday, April 26, 2024, French Minister of the Armed Forces, Sébastien Lecornu, signed an agreement with his German counterpart, Boris Pistorius, on the first phase of the future Main Ground Combat System (MGCS) tank. In front of the cameras, they initiated a memorandum of understanding setting in stone the 50-50 division of work between manufacturers in the two countries

The discussions held in Paris have culminated in the signing of an agreement for the initial phase, known as "1A", of the MGCS (Main Ground Combat System) program, symbolizing the political commitment of both nations to progress together. The MGCS program aims to replace current main battle tanks such as the French Leclerc and the German Leopard 2 with a system that incorporates advanced and innovative technologies. This new ground combat system, which will include features like networked operations management and unmanned, automated capabilities, is designed to excel in high-intensity combat scenarios through its technological innovations.

The memorandum of understanding signed in Paris specifies that France and Germany will each contribute 50% of the costs of the cooperation, reflecting a balanced partnership and ensuring a fair distribution of industrial labor between the two countries. In a structure similar to the FCAS (Future Combat Air System) air program, France will take a leading role in FCAS, while Germany will lead the development of MGCS.

The partnership, which began with formal discussions in 2012 and was officially sealed in 2017, represents a significant step in consolidating European defense efforts. It leverages the strengths of multiple stakeholders, including KNDS, a joint venture between Germany's Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and France's Nexter Systems. This collaboration aims not only to enhance military capabilities but also to foster integration within the broader European defense industry.

The MGCS is poised to redefine future armored warfare through the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced connectivity technologies. Under the direction of Martial, the capability architect from the French Directorate General of Armaments (DGA), the MGCS uses AI to enhance intelligence gathering, planning, command, and fire coordination. This AI integration ensures rapid decision-making at various command levels while maintaining human oversight at the core of its operations. The system's advanced connectivity enables real-time sharing of tactical information through an integrated combat cloud, ensuring seamless coordination among different vehicle modules. This supports semi-automatic actions that enhance operational effectiveness against adversaries.
According to Delphine, who is responsible for the development of future land combat systems at the DGA, the MGCS evolves from the collaborative, information-driven approach of the Scorpion system and is designed to adapt to modern threats such as drones, autonomous weapons, and cyberattacks.

In terms of armament, the MGCS will be able to strike targets up to 8,000 meters away, significantly extending the range compared to the current Leclerc tank. Its modules enhance assault capabilities by acting in concert to amplify offensive strength and complexity, thereby posing multiple challenges and surprises for the enemy. The system also benefits from enhanced observation capabilities up to 10,000 meters, improving target detection and anticipation.

The design of the MGCS includes a comprehensive protection suite with active camouflage, reinforced armor, countermeasures, and neutralization capabilities to defend against both aerial and ground threats. The strategic distribution of armament across various platforms reduces mass while increasing mobility and protection for the crew.

These technological advances play a crucial role in Project Titan, which will succeed the Scorpion initiative starting in 2040. Project Titan aims to revolutionize the decisive capabilities of the army by pushing the limits of collaborative air-land combat, incorporating joint and allied operational levels.

A project company will be established to oversee the development of MGCS, involving companies such as KNDS Deutschland, KNDS France, Rheinmetall Landsysteme, and Thales SIX. This company will jointly lead the Franco-German efforts and manage the four main components of the system: the cannon platform, missile platform, combat support platform, and operational system.

The program is divided into eight pillars, ranging from chassis development with automated navigation to drone defense, including the creation of a simulation environment and the setup of an advanced communication and command system. Each pillar will be led by either France, Germany, or jointly, depending on their specific areas of expertise.

Pillar 1 - MGCS platform with chassis and automated navigation under German leadership.

Pillar 2 - Cannons, turrets, and ammunition under Franco-German leadership. Initially, various national cannon systems will be developed, and one system will be selected after comparative testing.

Pillar 3 - Secondary armament such as guided missiles under French command.

Pillar 4 - Communication, command, and engagement system as the "digital nervous system" under Franco-German leadership.

Pillar 5 - Simulation environment under Franco-German leadership.

Pillar 6 - Sensor systems under French leadership.

Pillar 7 - Drone defense and protection under German leadership.

Pillar 8 - Support, logistics, and infrastructure under Franco-German leadership.


Before the final contract signing scheduled for next year, the project must still receive approval from the budget committee of the German Bundestag. Although lengthy and complex, this process has already benefited from several months of successful negotiations, strengthening the trust and cooperation between the two countries.

Following the agreement signing, ministers Pistorius and Lecornu expressed their gratitude towards the teams involved for their hard work, highlighting the importance of this Franco-German cooperation not only for the defense of both nations but also for the future of European security.

Zowel USMC (F-35B en F-35C) als USAF (F-35A) zijn vanwege de Pacific gericht op het kunnen opereren vanaf wegen en landingstrips. Personeel moet nu meer kunnen uitvoeren dan alleen de eigen taak.

Tot nu toe is in het openbaar niet bekend of Nederland deze technieken/handelingen ook gaat toepassen. Wellicht dat naar de Finse aanpak zal worden gekeken wanneer het nodig is. Finland is net als Zweden bekend met operaties vanaf wegen en met kleine teams aan personeel. Dat wat zij nu met de F/A-18C/D doen, gaan zij ook met de F-35A doen.

The US Air Force recently conducted a training exercise focused on Independent Pilot Off-Station Procedures (IPOP) for the F-35 Lightning II aircraft. Held at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada, on Apr. 1st, the exercise aimed to equip F-35 pilots with the skills necessary to operate in austere environments with limited support personnel.

Pilots from the 422nd and 59th Test and Evaluation Squadrons (TES) participated in the IPOP training. The exercise curriculum included practicing basic maintenance procedures, such as post-flight inspections, and refueling techniques. By mastering these skills, F-35 pilots can potentially extend the operational range of their aircraft and improve mission flexibility, particularly when deployed to locations with limited ground crew support.

The captions accompanying photos released by the U.S. Air Force emphasize that IPOP training prioritizes safety and efficient resource utilization. The exercises provide a controlled environment for pilots to develop basic maintenance skills while ensuring the safe operation of the F-35.

By equipping pilots with the ability to operate independently and manage basic maintenance tasks, the U.S. Air Force is preparing the F-35A to operate in environments without the phyiscal presence of the maintenance personnel.

US Army to shift aviation force structure back to tailored brigades

 The U.S. Army's aviation force structure will move away from modular Combat Aviation Brigade designs needed during heel-to-toe rotations in Iraq and Afghanistan and return to a model that tailors those units for specific divisions, according to the service's branch chief.

"Today we have modular CABs, so every CAB looks the same on paper," Maj. Gen. Mac McCurry, the Army's Aviation Center of Excellence commander, told reporters April 24 during the Army Aviation Association of America's annual summit in Denver. During heel-to-rotations "it was imperative that we'd be able to replace a [heavy] capability with a light capability and those changes to modular CABs happened in the early 2000s," he said.

The Army is returning to what it did prior to years of operations in the Middle East and will design division-based formations that do not look the same.

For example, McCurry said, "a light infantry division is more reliant on mobility than a heavy division is from the air, those soldiers have to move, rapidly reposition. We're putting more [UH-60] Black Hawk [utility helicopters] into the light divisions and taking some of those Black Hawks out of the heavy divisions and heavy divisions remain focused on lethality."

For the 101st Airborne Division, the Army is building an extra battalion of 32 CH-47F Chinook cargo helicopters to enable air assault. "That helps with the mobility and the ability to do air assault in that division," he said.

The Army decided as part of a recent rebalancing of aviation capability announced earlier this year that it would buy Boeing-made CH-47F Block II helicopters that it was not previously planning to buy for the active component. Utwill also complete its 12th CAB based in Europe, and has been operating as a partial CAB, he said.

"By moving the aircraft around and slightly adjusting the design, we're able to build out that 12th CAB in Europe," McCurry said.

The force structure changes do "a couple of things for us," he added. "As we looked at our gaps years ago, we said, 'Hey, we need more reconnaissance and security capacity and we've got to be able to air assault, in one period of darkness, a brigade,' and so that's where these focuses are."

According to a controlled but unclassified document obtained by Defense News that lays out the force structure change recommendationsm based off of a recent total analysis assessment, the Army is planning eight heavy CABS and four light brigades.

The units dedicated to heavy and theater enabling capability will be the 1st Cavalry Division, the 1st Infantry Division, 2ID, 3ID, 4ID, 16th Combat Aviation Brigade and 12 CAB, according to the document.

The three light CABs will be recapitalized under the 10th Mountain CAB, the 25th Infantry Division CAB, the 82nd Airborne Division and the air assault CAB will be with the 101st Airborne, the document notes.

Conversions are planned to begin this year and won't fully complete until the fall of 2029, the document notes.

The aviation changes are just a part of a wider push to change the Army's overall structure. Army leaders announced the overhaul earlier this year and said the changes would focus on what the service needs as it transitions from counterinsurgency missions to large-scale combat operations against technologically advanced adversaries.

Voorheen werden laserwapens vanwege hun energieverbruik vooral geschikt geacht voor de marine. De eerste Duitse demonstrator voor laserwapensystemen werd geïnstalleerd op het fregat Sachsen. Maar een Duits-Nederlands R&T-project onderzoekt momenteel een op Boxer gebaseerde laserwapenmissiemodule. De eerste technologiedemonstrator zal naar verwachting in het najaar worden gepresenteerd.

Het grote voordeel van laserwapens is dat ze geen munitie nodig hebben, alleen energie. Enerzijds maakt dit ze interessant voor de maritieme sector, waar opslagruimte schaarser is dan elektriciteit. Aan de andere kant zijn ze ook geschikt voor de bestrijding van kleine drones omdat de kosten per opname laag zijn. Ook de luchtmacht denkt al na over laserwapens voor haar gevechtsvliegtuigen.

Het grote nadeel van laserwapens is hun energieverbruik. Een paar jaar geleden probeerde DARPA een voertuiggebaseerd laserwapen uit, waarbij het voertuig vervolgens een aanhanger met een batterij moest vervoeren.

Maar al in het najaar van 2019 bundelden Nederland en Duitsland hun krachten om hun respectievelijke industriële capaciteiten te gebruiken om deze problemen op te lossen en een operationele Boxer met een laserwapenmodule te creëren. De gestelde termijn was vijf jaar. Het is nu tijd voor de presentatie van het resultaat.

Gemeenschappelijk laserwapen voor de Boxers
Duitsland brengt zijn expertise op het gebied van laserwapens naar Jupiter. Ten slotte hebben MBDA Duitsland en Rheinmetall in samenwerking al een laserwapen in de aanbieding dat met succes is getest en getest op het fregat Sachsen.

De energieopslag en koeling van het wapensysteem, beide lastige tot kritische factoren bij laserwapens, komen uit de Nederlandse industrie. Dit wordt toevertrouwd aan het bedrijf DEMCON.

De specifieke eis van beide landen was dat de gezamenlijk ontwikkelde oplossing op of in een Boxer moest passen, aangezien deze 8×8 wielvoertuigen vanwege hun capaciteiten en modulariteit de basis moesten vormen van de krachten op het gebied van wielmobiliteit van beide landen. In Duitsland als ruggengraat van de tussenliggende krachten.

Het doel was niet alleen om een ��laser te ontwikkelen die geschikt is voor wapens, maar ook om deze – inclusief de energievoorziening en het koelsysteem – te integreren in een bestaand voertuig. Bovendien is de laser nog steeds hoogtechnologische techniek, waarvoor bijvoorbeeld andere kabels, andere verbindingselementen etc. nodig zijn. De samenwerking door de jaren heen moest dienovereenkomstig nauw zijn.

Betrouwbare en effectieve laserwapens
Bedrijven moesten opereren op de rand van wat mogelijk en verstandig was. Voor de bestrijding van drones zou een bijzonder krachtige laser het beste zijn, omdat dit de snelste en dus meest betrouwbare manier is om vijandelijke systemen uit de lucht te halen. Maar de krachtigste laser vergt ook de meeste energie en de meeste koeling, en dat vergt ook ruimte. Er moest dus niet alleen rekening worden gehouden met de beschikbare ruimte, maar ook met de waarschijnlijke operationele scenario's, waarbij vooral de Nederlandse krijgsmacht zeer nauw samenwerkte met de bedrijven.

Hierdoor heeft de landlaser iets minder vermogen dan de Duitse zeelaser. De nu gebruikte 10kW laser gaf de beste verhouding tussen effect en verbruik.

MBDA Duitsland is verantwoordelijk voor de fijne tracking en de verlichtingslaser. Wanneer het wapen wordt gebruikt, wordt het doel vervolgens belicht met deze lichtlaser, waardoor het juiste punt kan worden bepaald voor het daaropvolgende gevecht. Pas wanneer dit richtpunt "zit" en de bijbehorende feedback aan het systeem wordt gegeven, wordt de hoogenergetische laser ingeschakeld en houdt het fijne volgsysteem precies dit gespecificeerde punt vast.

Jupiter testen
Eind dit jaar zal er een voltooide demonstrator beschikbaar zijn waarmee de twee landen tests kunnen uitvoeren. Op basis van deze testresultaten zou er vervolgens een serievoertuig kunnen worden gemaakt als ten minste één van de twee landen de Jupiter contracteert, de naam van het R&T-programma.

The cancellation of the U.S. Army's Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft (FARA) and Sikorsky's loss on the Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft (FLRAA) does not spell the end of its coaxial, X-2 technology, as the company is continuing to pitch it for international customers.

The dual rotor design was the key feature for the company's Raider X and SB-1 Defiant proposals, and Sikorsky President Paul Lemmo says there is still international interest in it.

Sikorsky will soon submit a proposal for NATO's Next Generation Rotorcraft (NRGC)  program based on the X-2 technology, Lemmo told reporters April 25 on the sidelines of the Army Aviation Association of America summit here. Sikorsky's parent Lockheed Martin already has a contract to study open architecture plans for NATO.

The NRGC program, started in 2020, is a multinational project led by France, Germany, Greece, Italy and the UK to field a new fleet of medium multirole helicopters. In February, the organization called on industry to develop concepts for the program with the goal of fielding by 2040. A request for proposals calls for a common airframe for land-based and naval operations, with a minimum cruise speed of 180 kt. (207.1 mph) or more and a maximum takeoff weight of between 10-17 metric tons.

Lemmo says Sikorsky is also in discussions with Italy for a contract for the second phase of a study for a future, high-speed helicopter requirement.

Beyond NATO and Italy, Lemmo says there are other countries that are involved in early discussions. Meanwhile, the company will continue flying its S-97 Raider for engineering tests and demonstrations.

Sikorsky prepares X2 offer for NATO's next generation rotorcraft competition

The manufacturer is shifting attention to alliance requirements in the aftermath of the US Army cancelling its next-generation Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft (FARA) effort.

Sikorsky is readying a bid for NATO's Next Generation Rotorcraft Capability (NGRC) program based on its X2 coaxial compound, high-speed helicopter design, a third chance for the tech to take a major helo competition.

"We're also about to submit a proposal for the NATO NGRC. They have a study contract now for aircraft concepts," Sikorsky President Paul Lemmo told reporters at the Army Aviation Association of America conference in Colorado. "We are going to submit one [a proposal] based on X2."

The decision comes just a month after the manufacturer told Breaking Defense that it wanted to assess a "final set of requirements" relating to NGRC, before formally pitching the X2-based offer.

Ja, België wil ze pas ontvangen als ze ook naar behoren werken.

Alle F-35 gebruikers gaan naar TR-3 en daarmee naar Block 4. Of dat nu af fabriek is of door middel van een ombouw ter plaatse. Er zijn maar een tweetal/drietal landen die te oude F-35A's en F-35B's hebben voor TR-3. Die blijven Block 3F.
