Swedish army orders more Grkpbv 90 armored mortar carriers from Hägglund Bofors

The Swedish Armed Forces Materiel Administration has placed an order at Hägglund Bofors Utveckling for twenty additional Granatkastaranscarband 90 (Grkpbv 90) armored mobile mortars. The order value is approximately SEK 500 million and delivery to the Armed Forces is planned for 2023 to 2025.

FMV recently delivered 40 grenade launcher (or mortar) armored vehicles 90 (Grkpbv 90). They are based on a chassis of the CV 90 (Combat Vehicle 90) with a newly developed turret fitted with a grenade launcher function. FMV is now ordering another twenty vehicles and integrating the army's new command support system, LSS Mark, into these and into the 40 already delivered vehicles. Deliveries are planned for the period 2023 to 2025.

By the end of 2016, the Swedish Defence Material Administration (FMV) had signed an agreement with HB Development (HB Utveckling AB, the joint venture between BAE Systems Bofors AB and BAE Systems Hägglunds AB) for the production and delivery of 40 120mm mortar carriers Grkpbv 90 to the Swedish army.

The first 4 vehicles were to be used for training, method tests and validation. The first regular vehicles were delivered in August 2019, and the other ones in 2020.

The Granatkastarpansarbandvagn 90 (Grkpbv90) is a grenade launcher carrier expected to act as an artillery system based on the Combat Vehicle 90 (CV90), a family of tracked combat vehicles. These vehicles are equiped with their own navigation system, the POS2.

Grkpbv90 enables fast grouping, shooting and regrouping. The crew can operate under the constant protection of the hull, without needing to reload the mortars from outside. The new contract will provide the Armed Forces with more indirect firepower and support for the mechanized battalions.

The additional Grkpbv 90s are part of a larger modernization program of the Swedish Combat Vehicle 90 fleet that will both extend the life of the vehicles, add new capabilities and introduce the army's new command support system.

Grkpbv90 has a crew of 4: driver, vehicle commander (who is also the shooter), and 2 loaders.

Israel reveals its new laser and GPS guided mortar ammunition Iron Sting

According to information released by the Israeli Ministry of Defense on March 14, 2021, the Directorate of Defense Research and Development (R&D) from the Israeli Ministry of Defense, the IDF's (Israeli Defense Forces) Ground Forces and Elbit Systems reveal the new laser and GPS guided mortar ammunition named "Iron Sting".

The new Iron Sting laser and GPS guided mortar ammunition was launched from the Cardom mortar system mounted on M113 tracked APC Armored Personnel Carrier. vehicle

The new 120 mm guided mortar ammunition has recently undergone final trials in a testing site in southern Israel. The completion of testing enables the start of serial production ahead of the system's supply to the IDF (Israel Defense Forces).

The series of tests was carried out using two networked Cardom mortar systems that were developed by Elbit Systems: a "Cardom" system, mounted on an M113 APC and a "Cardom spear" system, mounted on a Hummer 4X4 SUV. The Iron Sting is designed to engage targets precisely, in both open terrains and urban environments, while reducing the possibility of collateral damage and preventing injury to non-combatants. Its operational use will revolutionize ground warfare and equip battalions with organic, accurate and effective firepower.

The CARDOM is an autonomous, computerized 120 mm recoiling mortar system suitable for a variety of tracked and wheeled armored carriers. The CARDOM provides accurate, effective and immediate fire support for rapid deployment units and Special Forces, as well as for infantry and artillery units.

After ten years of research and development, the Israeli army will be equipped with advanced capabilities made for the modern battlefield. This laser and GPS- guided mortar ammunition provides troops with a precise firing capability that has only been implemented in missiles and air ammunition thus far. This is a very complex program and a groundbreaking system on the international level.

The introduction of this laser and GPS-guided ammunition transforms the mortar system from statistical firepower into a precision fire system, thus delivering a significant change in fire capabilities at the tactical level.

The technology made available to the IDF by Israeli industries changes the battlefield and provides our forces with more accurate and effective means. The integration of "Iron Sting" in the IDF, corresponds to the vision presented in the military's "Tnufa" multi-year plan. It also fulfills the IDF's needs, adapting combat capabilities to contend with enemies hidden within civilian, urban environments, while meeting the legal and moral standards set by the State of Israel, said the Israeli Minister of Defense Benny Gantz.

Patria Nemo mobile mortar now able to fire on the move

Patria has finalized the qualification of the fire-on-the-move capability on land-based systems in both direct and indirect fire missions. This new outstanding feature of the Patri Nemo allows troops to be in constant movement during the fire mission and therefore it does not form a clear target for the counter-battery fire.

With the fire-on-the-move capability locating a target, aiming and opening the fire is remarkably faster and more efficient without stops in the fire mission. So, Patria Nemo is a real game changer on the battlefield.

As a turreted, light-weight and remote-controlled 120 mm mortar system with a high level of mobility, protection and accuracy, Patria Nemo is capable of both direct and indirect fire. One of the features that makes Patria Nemo mortar system particularly advanced is its fire-on-the-move capability. "Patria has originally developed the fire-on-the-move capability for Patria Nemo Navy version several years ago, but due to tightened customer expectations and the prospects of the battlefield, the development was taken a step further", explains Kari Reunamäki, Vice President of the weapon systems business line.

Patria Nemo mortar system, weighing 1,900 kg, has a full 360º traverse and weapon elevation from -3 up to 85 degrees. Depending on the platform, vehicle equipped with Patria Nemo can stow 50-60 rounds of 120 mm ammunition. Patria Nemo enables the full potential of modern mortar systems with its usability on land and at sea, operation on the move, and high level of protection and firepower.

U.S. Army to demonstrate the capabilities of Patria Nemo 120 mm mortar system through Foreign Comparative Testing

Patria has entered into an agreement with the U.S. Army to conduct a turreted mortar feasibility study in the form of Foreign Comparative Testing (FCT). The testing complements ongoing cooperation between Patria and the U.S. Army on a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) announced in May.

The study consists of several tests and demonstrations in the U.S. and Finland. Through these events Patria and the Army are testing Patria Nemo 120 mm turreted mortar system performance with U.S. ammunition and against U.S. requirements.

This agreement is a continuation of the U.S. Army's effort to provide Armored and Stryker Brigade Combat Teams with rapid, precise indirect and direct fire capability where the operating crew is well protected, and their physical burden is significantly reduced. In 2018 and 2020 the Army published market surveys to identify capable sources to develop and produce the 120 mm Modular Turreted Mortar System (MTMS). Patria answered the market surveys based on Patria Nemo mortar system.

Patria Nemo is the world's foremost turreted mortar system. It is a remote-controlled 120 mm mortar system capable of both direct and indirect fire missions – including on the move. Nemo can execute multiple rounds simultaneous impact (MRSI) fire missions with up to 6 rounds hitting the target at the same time. In addition to being highly protected, Patria Nemo is light, compact and easily installed on light, tracked chassis, wheeled armored vehicles or navy vessels.

"The purpose of FCT programs is to find, assess, and field world-class products with a high technology readiness level in order to satisfy defense requirements more quickly and economically. We are convinced that these study and test efforts we conduct together with the U.S. Army demonstrate Patria Nemo's unique capabilities compared to any other mortar system. Nemo as a mature fielded product - coupled with our clear growth potential vision - provide a future-proof and low-risk solution to existing and new customers. And for the U.S. Armed Forces our cooperation with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace exemplify that we are committed to provide a system that is manufactured in the U.S.," says Jussi Järvinen, President of Patria's Land Business Unit.

US Army to Evaluate Patria Nemo 120mm Mortar System     ( misschien ook wel iets voor de USMC )

Patria and the U.S. Army Entered into Agreement for a Feasibility Study of Patria Nemo 120 Mm Mortar System

Finland's Patria and the US Army have agreed to assess the capabilities of the Patria Nemo mortar system, seen here mounted on an AMV 8x8 infantry combat vehicle, and its compatibility with U.S. Army equipment.

U.S. Army's Combat Capabilities Development Command Armaments Center and Patria have signed a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) to determine feasibility of incorporating a turreted, breech-loaded 120 mm mortar weapon system in U.S. mortar carriers.

The scope of the agreement is to assess the capabilities of Patria Nemo mortar system, its compatibility with U.S. mortar carrier weapon platforms and fire control systems as well as to evaluate the use of current U.S. 120 mm mortar ammunition in a breech-loaded mortar, such as Patria Nemo.

This agreement is continuation of U.S. Army's effort to provide Armored and Stryker Brigade Combat Teams with rapid, precise indirect and direct fire capability where the operating crew is well protected, and their physical burden is significantly reduced. In late 2018 the Army published a market survey to identify capable sources to develop and produce the 120 mm Mortar Future Indirect Fire Turret (FIFT). Patria answered the market survey based on Patria Nemo mortar system.

Patria Nemo is a turreted, remote-controlled 120 mm mortar system with both direct and indirect fire capability and can execute up to 6 grenade multiple rounds simultaneous impact fire missions. In addition to being highly protected, Patria Nemo is light, compact and easily installable on light, tracked chassis, wheeled armored vehicles or navy vessels.

"The agreement between the U.S Army and Patria exemplifies the capability leap that modern turreted mortar systems can introduce to armed forces and illustrates Patria's leading role in this technology area. It is also logical continuation to the cooperation between Patria and the U.S. Government that began with Patria Nemo sales to a third country through a Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program", says Jussi Järvinen, President of Patria's Land Business Unit.

Patria demos Nemo 120 mm mortar in United States

Finland's Patria said its120 mm Nemo (New Mortar) turret, integrated onto its Armoured Modular Vehicle (AMV) 8×8, has conducted a firepower demonstration in the United States.

These trials were done at Yuma Proving Ground, Arizona, and Fort Benning, Georgia, and included indirect and direct target engagements as well as Multiple Round Simultaneous Impact (MRSI) fire missions, Kari Reunamäki, Patria's senior vice-president for Weapon Systems Land, told Jane's . The latest demonstration was at Fort Benning in September.

Patria said the 120 mm Nemo turret weighs 1.9 tonnes. For trials, the AMV carried 60×120 mm mortar bombs supplied by Belgium's Mecar (now France's Nexter Munitions).

Nemo's main role is indirect fire support, but it can also do direct fire missions against bunkers and other battlefield targets. It is also capable of coming into action within 30 seconds and can come out of action immediately.

In 2018 the US Army began a market survey "to identify capable sources to develop and produce the 120mm Mortar Future Indirect Fire Turret (FIFT)", according the service's official notice.

Switzerland ready to buy Cobra 120 mm mortar systems

Following extensive trials, the Swiss Army is expected to place a contract for a new 120 mm self-propelled (SP) mortar system in the next 6-12 months, according to Captain Lars Kristian Lehman of the Swiss Armed Forces.

Capt Lehman revealed the forthcoming contract in March at the Omega Conferences & Events' Mortar Systems Conference in Bristol, UK. A contract signing has been expected since the Swiss Army first began firing trials with the system in May 2016.

When fielded, the 120 mm SP mortar system will fill a gap in the army's indirect firepower capability, between its 81 mm mortar systems and its 155 mm/47-calibre upgraded M109L47 series self-propelled artillery systems.

The Swiss Army plans to order 32 RUAG Defence 120 mm Cobra turntable-mounted smoothbore mortar systems that are to be mounted in the rear of new General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS)-MOWAG 8×8 Piranha 3+ armoured vehicle (Piranha 4 in Swiss service).

RUAG Defence is to supply the 120 mm mortar systems to GDELS-MOWAG, who will integrate them into the newbuild Piranha 4 8×8s that have a slightly raised roofline to the rear to accommodate the mortar. That work will be undertaken at the main GDELS-MOWAG facility at Kreuzlingen, Switzerland, where the Piranha family of vehicles is manufactured.

The system is to have a crew of four (driver, commander, and two ammunition loaders), a maximum gross vehicle weight of up to 30 tonnes, and a maximum road speed of 90 km/h.

Standard equipment will consist of a remote weapon station armed with a .50 M2 HB machine gun and banks of electrically operated smoke grenade launchers.

In addition to the Cobra systems, the Swiss Army also plans to buy 16 Piranha II 8×8 armoured personnel carriers that will be rerolled into the command post role, 12 armoured ammunition resupply vehicles, and 36 flat rack ammunition containers.
