Finland, Sweden interested in NEMO Container

Finland's Patria has provided Jane's with an update on the NEMO Container 120 mm mortar system, following on from extensive testing in the Baltic Sea last year.

According to Kari Reunamäki, Patria's vice-president for Weapon Systems, the design of the system is now locked down following on from at-sea, on-the-move firing testing.

Previous firing tests had involved firing from a static position, as well as from a truck, and on-the-move from a truck. While the system is entirely modular – based on a standard 20 ft long International Standards Organisation (ISO) shipping container and can be mounted on many truck systems, the truck-mounted tests involved a Finnish Sisu truck.

Test firings for Patria Nemo Navy Container conducted successfully

The latest member of Patria's Game Changers of the Battlefield – Patria Nemo Container has undergone vigorous test firings of its 120mm mortar in demanding sea conditions on board Fast Supply Vessel in Sweden. Together with the successful land tests earlier on Sisu E13TP 8x8 off-road truck, these naval tests verified that Patria Nemo Container truly opens a whole new market segment for Patria's turreted mortar systems.

The tests mainly concentrated on the functionality of the Patria Nemo Container in sea conditions with various firing modes, including firing on the move. Another important aspect was testing of the interface of the Patria Nemo Container and the vessel in general in harsh sea conditions and, especially while performing fire missions.

Patria Nemo Container together with the Fast Supply Vessel was performing as expected and the ground-breaking concept of the 20 ft sea container with 120 mm turreted mortar system was proving its ingenuity also as a naval weapon system. It was able to operate as a mobile firing unit, both with direct and indirect fire, thus being ideal for supporting the battle of the coastal jaeger troops / coastal rangers / marines etc. More importantly, Nemo Container proved that it is as mobile and agile as its "brothers" directly integrated onto land (Patria Nemo) or naval platforms (Patria Nemo Navy).

Patria Nemo Container was functioning perfectly on board – this time on the Swedish Fast Supply Vessel. Rapid response, accuracy, shoot & scoot, firepower, protection, mobility - all the characteristics of Patria's Game Changers of the Battlefield were proven.

RUAG launches COBRA mortar systems

RUAG Defence launched its latest COBRA 120mm mortar system at IDEX 2015, the company announced on 16 March.

COBRA is a modular system that can be configured to suit individual requirements. It comes with a pre-equipped semi-automatic loader system that can function under diverse extreme weather conditions, in day and night.

The mortar system also features fully electronic drives for improved shoot-and-scoot capabilities, and an effective range of 9km. It has been designed to be integrated into any lightweight tracked or wheeled vehicle platform.

The COBRA mortar system features RUAG's ballistic computing, giving it automatic gun laying and multi-round single impact capabilities. It can fire any standard 120mm ammunition, including the latest-generation smart ammunition. It comes with a training solutions and logistic services suite.

Patria Nemo Container includes all the equipment required by a mortar unit in a single package. The Nemo Container is delivered with everything that a mortar unit needs: protection for the crew, the weapon and ammunition. The container has its own power unit and air conditioning. In addition to an access hatch, the container has an escape hatch.

The customer can select NBC (Nuclear, Biological and Chemical) filtration systems, as well as the desired ballistic protection, made either of steel plates or ceramic armour. High-durability steel plating 8 to 10mm thick adds around three tons to the weight of the container. The container has space for one hundred mortar bombs. It has a crew of three: two loaders and a gunner, who also acts as the commander of the unit. The key benefit of the Patria Nemo Container is its easy mobility, which is unique to mortar systems of this caliber.

The container can be easily moved into a firing position on a high-speed boat, a ship or on a truck; the container can also fire from any of these carriers and naturally also from the ground. For example, the container's versatile mobility enables coastal jaeger platoons to relocate this independent firing unit during a mission. This is also an excellent solution for protecting military bases. The container can also be purchased as a separate unit without the weapon system, in which case the customer can make cost-effective use of its existing Nemo equipment.

Patria Nemo Container, showcased for the first time at the IDEX 2017, has completed successfully its first test firings both on truck platform as well as a stand-alone on land.
